I went to the new exhibition at the Asian Art museum yesterday. This is an ancient tomb beast (about 300 b.c.), thought to have the power to ward off evil.

Any time they can’t figure out what something was it must have been used ceremonially, or to keep the evil eye away, or something. I seem to recall ancient pieces with holes, carved from bone or wood that someone recently pointed out were more likely rope making tools than scepters used in religious rites.
