We’ve put a shitpot of money into developing “clean coal” technology. It can be done, but it’s extraordinarily expensive, and requires the capture and repurposing of the generated CO2.

It’s not economically feasible, given the price of natural gas. Coal is just a filthy fuel, full stop. We should be pushing coal fired plants to retool for natural gas generation. We’d meet the CPP goals in 10 years, easy.

Instead of pouring money into the fever dream of “clean coal”, we should be pouring money into getting natural gas replaced with thorium cycle nuclear generation. Plentiful, no glow in the dark rod waste, no fissionable or fusible waste products, no meltdowns, &c.
