The Miami Herald has a story about the detainees at Gitmo, with the revelation that some of them hold degrees from American colleges.

”That’s the kind of ironic thing about it. They don’t mind criticizing us but they don’t mind coming here and getting educated,” said Army Lt. David Walters. …

At least one of the degree-holding prisoners is a Westerner, Walters said. He described one as ”a very educated Arab,” and said a man claiming he had a double major from a U.S. university was either Saudi or Afghan.

An officer who has spent time in the camp had earlier said that prisoners included U.S. university or college alumni and that one of the prisoners has identified himself as a ”Badger,” meaning a graduate of the University of Wisconsin.

It was not clear whether there are any American doctorate holders among the prisoners.

And by the way, if you hadn’t noticed yet, they want to kill.

Walters said the latest prisoner to menace U.S. troops arrived on [the Feb. 15 flight from Kandahar], and uttered the threat the evening of Feb. 15, during his processing to the camp.

At the processing, prisoners still getting their bearings from the 20-plus hour, 8,000-mile journey get showers and fresh clothes, are fingerprinted and photographed and receive a medical examination. They also can fill out a Red Cross card to notify their family that they are being held in Cuba.

”He said it was his goal and aim here to kill a U.S. service member or another detainee if possible. We were all briefed on it,” the lieutenant said.

Walters described the prisoner as in his late 20s or 30s and said he was not a native English speaker, but spoke perfect English.
