I’m looking for something constructive to do, so I decide to try and locate the hidden leak that is draining the spa.
I pull off the redwood skirting and the main pumps are dry, no leaks. Darn. Must be another pump somewhere. Naturally I can’t find the manual so I proceed around the tub removing the panels. Finally locate another pump on the far side of the tub from the main pump. Sure enough, it is gushing water, and when I pull the offending line I discover that a washer has gone due to age.
It is a special washer. Odd size, funny profile. I’m going to have to call the manufacturer tomorrow and order new washers.
Not a real problem, just another aggravation.

As a young poet, Cui Weiping was not much interested in politics. But she says she could never shake the image of her husband returning home on a June night 20 years ago, his pants mottled with the blood of people shot by the Chinese army. Now Cui is speaking out, trying to rescue the memory of the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy movement and its violent end from a powerful government heavily invested in suppressing their very mention.
With the approach Thursday of the 20th anniversary of “six-four,” Chinese shorthand for the June 4 crackdown date, this Beijing Film Academy professor feels a duty to remember.

I’m betting silicone.
It is surprising how simply this thing is made. It’s an old tub, so it is just a tub, a heater, a control panel, and a sealed box that, when grasped with a wet hand, will strongly encourage you to find another place to rest your hand.

I watched two episodes of that yesterday. It’s interesting but for some reason it’s almost like a game show with the competing truckers. re: #91 Gus 802
Yeah, I find “Ice Road Truckers” to be totally ineffective at creating any interest at all.
There are two main points that are supposed to make us care. The first is that it’s very, very, very cold out there. Staggeringly cold. But you can’t communicate that on TV. It’s not cold at all, here in my living room. Maybe they should ask all viewers to take a bath in icewater before they tune in, just so we have a better sense of what’s going on.
The other thing is that it’s possible that the ice could crack, and the truckers could fall through to their doom. The thing is, that doesn’t usually happen. So basically, what you have is some guys driving trucks back and forth, and they made a show about it.

Facebook reunites mother with long-lost son
Simon de Bruxelles
A woman whose three-year-old son was abducted and taken to live in Hungary has been reunited with him 27 years later after finding his name on Facebook.
Avril Grube last saw Gavin when his father took him on an outing to Blackpool Zoo. That was in 1982.
Instead of going to the zoo, however, Joseph Paros took the boy to Budapest in defiance of a court order.

Its frustrating. I write and draw and design and play and I never feel satisfied that Im getting to the core of the idea.
Ive been close a few times and felt so satisfied. So unburdened. Theres one guitar video where I got close. But sharing it might make me look at it more critically. So unlike other videos, I wont point a link to it.

re: #114 Last Mohican
That’s about the size of it. It’s OK and interesting to watch once in a blue moon but that’s about it. The Greatest Catch seems more interesting and it’s a far more dangerous profession.
You ever watch the PBS series “Carrier?” It’s on HULU — the whole 10 hours. Fascinating intimate view of like on the USS Nimitz.

Apropos of nothing, just snapped a cool picture of a rainbow arching right over the spire of the Old North Church in Boston, which I can see clearly out my bedroom window (it’s only a block or two away and is the spot from which Paul Revere saw the famous lanterns). It looks like the the rainbow is emanating from the very top like a beacon straight down.
And, of course, I realize I left my camera’s USB cable at my mother’s house the last time I went home so I can’t see how it turned out for at least a few weeks. ACK!

I am really just sick at this moment. Folks flying off the deep end cheering on a cold blooded killer on one hand, and then on the other hand folks all hot and bothered that their rights are being trampled on because the government wants correspondence in writing- and on the eve of the Tienanmen Square massacre. Makes me think they have no idea what rights violations really are.

Egypt man cuts off his [privates] for love, say police
May. 31, 2009 02:00 PM
Associated Press
CAIRO - A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own [male member] to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported Sunday.
After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, said a police official.
The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt’s poorest and most conservative areas that is also home to the famed ancient Egyptian ruins of Luxor.

In Haydn commemorative year it’s - mostly Mozart
May. 31, 2009 02:03 PM
Associated Press
VIENNA - Mostly Mozart. Hardly Haydn.
Joseph Haydn died 200 years ago Sunday, and Austria has been officially marking the occasion with hundreds of concerts, exhibitions and other events dedicated to the music and memory of one of the country’s greatest sons.
There is no doubt that Haydn was a giant. The “Father of the Symphony” was also key in developing genres such as the string quartet, the sonata and the concerto. His oratorios are the gold standard. And he was unusually prolific, leaving behind more than 100 major works and hundreds of shorter pieces.
But Haydn has it hard in a country that also gave birth to Amadeus.

Mail deliveries halted when street is made one-way
May. 29, 2009 03:37 PM
Associated Press
YORK, Maine - Residents of Ocean Avenue Extension in York who were upset at the town’s decision to make their street one-way now have a new cause for complaint: the post office’s refusal to deliver their mail.
York Village Postmaster William Monagle says the traffic change would require the driver to make a left-hand turn, and the Postal Service has a policy of not creating new left-hand turns on its routes.
Monagle told the Portsmouth Herald that the policy is “purely a safety move.”

Very interesting piece on a mass murderer that is never mentioned as such:
Rachel Carson, environmentalism’s answer to Pol Pot
She was responsible to have banned DDT.
Yesterday would have been her 102nd birthday and I’m sorry I missed it, but my sharp-eyed fellow-traveller David Hinz at The Minority Report celebrated with a lively dance on the old fraud’s grave. He doesn’t mince his words: Rachel Carson - poster girl of the international eco movement - was a “mass murderer” to rival Stalin and Pol Pot.
Was she really responsible for the deaths of as many as 50 million people? That’s just an estimate. …… In 2006, the WHO tacitly acknowledged its mistake by partially rescinding the ban. “We must take a position based on the science and the data. One of the best tools we have against malaria is indoor residual spraying. Of the dozen or so insecticides WHO has approved as safe for house spraying, the most effective is DDT,” said Arata Kochi of WHO.
Do the utterly misleading “extreme scenarios” posited by Rachel Carson remind you of anyone? Prince Charles, maybe? Al Gore? Dr James Hansen? No surprise if they do. Carson’s bestselling brand of junk science and misanthropic, anti-capitalist doom-mongering has provided the model for the international green movement ever since.

Heh, I still have some old “Ortho” insecticide in my garage, and clearly on the label it says “CONTAINS DDT!”. I keep it as a memento, and to show it to my liberal friends so they shriek in horror.
The “war on DDT” certainly had some collateral damage……in the tens of millions - the dirty little secret of the “environmental movement” and a perfect example of the law of unintended consequences.
