From Revolutionary Road: [Link: shooresh1917.blogspot.com...] Pt 1
9 reasons why the 'presidential election' in Iran is a sham!
1. A government from the Middle Ages which still executes individuals for 'enmity against god' or 'morality crimes', 'acts incompatible with chastity', stones people to death for having sex and has executed over 100,000 people in two decades cannot at the same time profess 'democracy in Iran is transparent and for everyone, compared with Western democracy that has overt and covert limitations,' This has been said by Khamenei, whose title is the Supreme Spiritual Leader no less!
2. Any political party opposed to the government is banned and their members either killed, in exile or clandestinely active with great risk to themselves. Article 26 of the constitution states: 'The formation of parties, societies, political or professional associations …is permitted provided they do not violate the principles of independence, freedom, national unity, the criteria of Islam, or the basis of the Islamic republic.' This goes to show how superficial labels of reformist, moderate, conservative and so on are in Iranian politics. All those running support and will maintain repression and theocracy.
3. In Iran, there is no freedom of association and organisation that is necessary for a fair election. Article 27 of the constitution states that 'public gatherings and marches may be freely held, provided … that they are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam.' This is pretty difficult when you consider the anti-Islamic backlash and strong anti-government sentiments amongst the majority of people.
4. In Iran, there is no freedom of the press and expression. Article 24 of the constitution clearly stipulates: 'publications and the press have freedom of expression except when it is detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam or the rights of the public.' The regime keeps closing down press affiliated with itself so you can imagine what it does to independent and free-thinking press and expression.
5. A lot has been said about the fact that only a few of the many candidates were approved to run in today's presidential election by the Guardian Council whose members are directly or indirectly selected by Khamenei. This doesn't mean that many of those disqualified are any better. Some of them are stalwarts of the government.

Revolutionary Road. Pt 2 And Obama thinks he can sweet-talk these guys. What a moron.
6. The list of those who was selected, though, reads like a most wanted list! All are former or present government officials responsible for and linked to serious human rights violations during their various governmental positions. Here's a short bio of them:
* Mehdi Karroubi, Member of the State Expediency Council, former Majlis Speaker from 1989 to 1992 and 2000 to 2004. Secretary General and founding member of Militant Clerics Society one of the most reactionary organisations in Iran. He also headed the Imam Khomeini Relief Committee and the Martyrs Foundation, two state institutions which control much of the country's assets.
* Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He has been a top commander of the notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps in particular responsible for murder of thousands of opponents during the dark days of mass killings in the early 80s. A recently revealed document has shown his involvement in planning an attempt on the life of author Salman Rushdie. He is a member of the central council of the Society of the Devotees of the Islamic Revolution.
* Mohsen Rezai, Secretary of State Expediency Council; one of the founders and former Commander of Iran's notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps from 1981 to 1997. He is personally responsible for murdering many socialist and opponents of the Islamic Republic. He is wanted by Interpol for planning and undertaking acts of terrorism abroad.
* Hossein Mousavi, has been prime minister and head of government for several years. He organised and carried out massacres and suppression of protests of the population in the 80s, in which hundreds of thousands were arrested and thousands executed. In his time in office a row of inhumane and barbaric laws against women, the opposition and critics of the regime were introduced and used.
7. Some say that if all those who want are allowed to run, this could be considered a real election. It can't - because only those 'distinguished men possessing trustworthiness and piety; and a convinced belief in the fundamental principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the official religion of the country' can be elected according to Article 115 of the Islamic Republic of Iran's constitution. This effectively excludes the vast majority of the population.
8. Of course that means women are automatically and categorically excluded from running in the election. Again, Article 20 of the constitution states: '…both men and women, equally enjoy the protection of the law and enjoy all human, political, economic, social, and cultural rights' but only in conformity with Islamic criteria.' But again, if women were allowed to run, they would only implement the same misogyny inherent in the system.
9. The person who will be 'elected' today will have to swear that he 'will guard the official religion of the country, the order of the Islamic Republic and the Constitution of the country' and dedicate himself to the 'the honour of the country, the propagation of religion and morality.' The person selected in this farce is going to uphold the very barbarity that the people in Iran are gearing to overthrow.

Chris Tolkien just published his fathers version of The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun. Basis for lots of what was in the Hobbit and so forth. Also basis for what was in Wagner's ring cycle. Old Norse legend New Lay of the Voslungs and New Lay of Gudrun. At the time his father was a professor of old English there was no professor of Old Norse. He sort of filled in. For people who want to read something interesting, read a translation of the Heliand. It an effort by a monk in the 8th century to turn the Gospels into something that the local Germans could relate to. Its Jesus and his thanes. No sheep herders, they were the people minding the horses, etc.

Vaknin is the source book on the topic. OOP and costs $50, but it really gives perspective. Barry Boy is a poster child for NPD. His upbringing is classic. His current behavior is classic. If he starts to get his NSS withdrawn, he may do something destructive to get the spotlight back on him. A total failure would be a catastrophe in his life and he might psychologically self destruct. The folks with NPD that are in business and have their narcissism tied up in the business blow up big time when the business goes bankrupt. I really, genuinely fear for my country if he goes over the edge.

Unless I am missing something, how can you make this diagnoses from observation only? Granted, you can look at him and say his displays NPD traits, but without sitting down with him, in a psychoanalytical setting, going through generally accepted techniques to diagnoses NPD, I don't see how you can claim a that his is clinically suffering from NPD.

re: #107 Iron Fist
You can block, and sometimes you have to. You have to protect the insides of your arms and, more importantly, your femoral arteries as well as the trunk of your body. You have to block carefully, but you need to get control of the weapon as quickly as you can. It never hurts to break things (fingers, arms, clavical) or knee them in the nuts, but never, despite what you've seen Chuck Norris do, kick at a knife. All they have to do is slip the blow and hamstring you. Then you are meat.
I never want to die by knife wounds. Just shoot me..
My first 2 years in college I took Aikido cause coach said we needed stretching exercise. I loved it.. I did get a brown belt...
We always learned at first blow..Step back quickly....The attacker just missed and is inn a venerable stance...

Heh. I did Aikido for a couple of years. Despite it not being a terribly powerful (in an aggresive/combat sense) martial art, it was probably one of the most valuable things I studied. The first principle of 'avoid danger' was very, very valuable.

A student friend of mine came back after the weekend at his home town where apparently some kooks wanted to mess him up with a knife. He grabbed the knife by the blade, I saw the ghastly wound, and with one movement broke the knife yielding arm of the attacker.

Oh, I do believe he is quite serious when it comes to his dislike at being taxed, and so on, but on many social topics (especially when he is talking to the SoCons) it has been my impression is that what he has been doing is playing a character on radio.
Perhaps he has understood the same commercial opportunities that Pat Boone must have discovered - that there is indeed an audience out there for Teh Crazy?

I was listening today for the first time in a long time. He was discussing the possibility of an effort to repeal the 22nd amendment. The only thing I heard that some people might consider offensive was when he speculated that some of the Obamessiah's most fervent followers, particularly minorities, might become so invested in his leadership that they would feel any other president would be illegitimate. I seriously doubt even Obama supporters are that crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an effort to repeal the 22nd amendment starting somewhere around January 2013.

Opinion polls are what you want them to be. I heard a luncheon talk given by NRA leader (who was one hell of a good debater) Harlan Carter and when asked about 'polling' he said (paraphrase here) 'The results can be whatever you want them to be ... if your paying for it. It is simply a matter of asking a sequence of well phrased questions that will get you the response you wish.'
So with 60 Dhimmis in the Senate and a TOTUS who "Won" and a press corps that grovels at his feet, I'm just wondering how bad things are going to get before 'We the People' get it? AND ...
Now that the Dhimmis are TOTALLY in charge when will the 'It's all Bush's fault' excuses cease and desist?

If that is what they want, then they are taking the proper legal path to accomplish it. I don't think it will work. They didn't even try it with Clinton, but by the end of the Clinton Administration most people were tired of them and wanted them to go away. If they were to do away with the 22nd Amendment, it doesn't mean that Obama would be elected to a third term. He hasn't even won a second term yet, and he seems to step on his dick somehow, someway every day or two. The lapdog media dont report on it very much, but people notice.
And after a year or two of the hyperinflation Obama's economic policy is going to bring, he may not get a second term. It is way to early to be thinking about such things. Except to note that there is some small faction of the Democratic Party that wants to go in that direction.

per wikipedia ( which I always take with a grain of salt )
In each of 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2009, Serrano introduced a joint resolution proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the 22nd Amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as president. Each resolution, with the exception of the current one, died without ever getting past the committee

I don't think it was sticking it to him. I was just questioning the rational for showing a one day drop of 80 points was from the failure of the stimulus program. Up 100, then down 80, does not indicate a thing. BTW, I expect a correction, it's been mostly up too long.

The whole right wing blogosphere should be going nuts over what the Leftist/Socialist Democrats are doing to this countries future. They're spending this country into oblivion!
The Left was NOT diplomatic and "nice" in their quest for power, and we see now what their power has wrought. Playing nice and fair is not going to get them out of power either. They're systematically destroying this country from within. Whatever it takes (short of physical violence) to get them out of power, I'm willing to entertain it. These people have to be stopped. Chalres, on the previous theead several people complained that their posts were getting cut off.
I would like to add my voice to the chorus -- my post (almost) got cut off too.
What caused it? I had a section of text "bolded" with a "[strong]" tag, and within that, a I had a further subsection text also "italicized" with an "[em]" tag. The text was cut off (in the Preview) at the closing of the "[/em]" tag.
Just FYI -- not sure what is causing this. But when i removed the opening and closing em tags, the problem went away.
My experience, exactly. The cutoff is usually after a tag, especially a link tag. But, fewer problems today than yesterday.

Serrano and Stabenow are the ones who put this crap forth,
Don't be too sure about Stabenow - her husband has some vested interests.
- Athans first found a role in "progressive" talk radio back in 2004 as CEO of Democracy Radio, which preceded Air America and whose programming (Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller) was ultimately absorbed by Jones Radio Networks (now part of Dial Global).
- In November 2005, we reported exclusively that Athans had received a cushy (if not downright fishy) deal to establish a "DC office" for Air America Radio, at an annual salary of $165,000 once he went full time in 2006. His job duties were fuzzy at best and any real results even harder to quantify. At the time, we wondered if he was hired simply to gain political access to Stabenow.

I'm going to disagree. The Left's vitriol helped the R's maintain power for six years 2000 - 2006, it's only when they started toning it down a bit that they started gaining traction - they ran middle right candidates in 06 who acted adult. Their over the top campaigns they lost (who was the guy who ran against Lieberman? The KOS candidate? )
Obama continued that theme in 2008. Most people vote for adults, not shit slingers. (I am of course excluding most of California from "most people" ... I'd say all of California, but it's where Charles and a few other Lizards live.)

re: #281 Thanos
I'm going to disagree. The Left's vitriol helped the R's maintain power for six years 2000 - 2006, it's only when they started toning it down a bit that they started gaining traction - they ran middle right candidates in 06 who acted adult. Their over the top campaigns they lost (who was the guy who ran against Lieberman? The KOS candidate? )
Obama continued that theme in 2008. Most people vote for adults, not shit slingers. (I am of course excluding most of California from "most people" ... I'd say all of California, but it's where Charles and a few other Lizards live.)
I live in CA also. I know what Leftist/Socialist policies can do to an economy first hand.
I'm not advocating 'over the top' rhetoric. But I'm don't want to see the neutered Democrat light approach either. I want to see Republicans who actually are CONSERVATIVE and are capable of espousing conservative positions. And the main cnservative positions they should be espousing are FISCAL CONSERVATIVE POSITIONS! That's where all the problems are....not in the social conservative realm. I could care less about so called 'social conservative' positions right now.
Fiscal policy is where the Left is most vulnerable...and THAT"S where they should be hit the hardest! And no more pussy footing around. Obama's fiscal policies are way too dangerous to be playing Mr. nice guy with. He and his fellow Democrats should be hit right between the eyes (metaphorically speaking) for what they've done to this economy....and hit HARD!

In all candor, they have a belief system and they are following their beliefs. I do not ascribe to them any evil motives or any animus to the rank and file GOP. They are doing what they, as a party, see is a correct course. Now, if they are rewarding the members of their party and doing what it takes to make sure they stay in power--and control the purse-strings--for as long as possible, then they are following an age old political tradition. That might sound cynical, but it has been that way in any form of democratic Republic-- going back to Athens.
True, there are idiots that do not get "it" and want to stifle political debate. But they are the ones that miss the great paradox of this country. The greatest weakness perceived by foreigners is the huge amount of dissent and so much anti-adminstration rhetoric across the airwave--but freedom of speech and expression is our greatest strength.
BTW--the best holiday is coming up on Saturday. Let's do what John Adams predicted would happen and celebrate with the all the gusto we can muster!

It was vacation time for the medicos.
Seriously.
France has like 6-8 vacation. They shut the hospitals down to a minimum and every one goes on vacation.
The system was so overwhelmed it could cope.
France heat wave death toll set at 14,802
Health Minister Jean-Francois Mattei has ordered a separate special study this month to look into a possible link with vacation schedules after doctors strongly denied allegations their absence put the elderly in danger. The heat wave hit during the August vacation period, when doctors, hospital staff and many others take leave. The results of that study are expected in November.

Thomas Sowell explains the economics of health-care - and takes apart leftists' favorite non-sequiturs:
A cynic is said to be someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. If so, then it is political cynicism to point to other countries that spend less on medical care, including some countries where there is “universal health care” provided “free” by their governments.
Just as medical care, houses, and cars were all cheaper when they lacked things that they have today, so medical care in other countries is cheaper when it lacks many things that are more readily available in the United States.
There are more than four times as many Magnetic Resonance Imaging units (MRIs) per capita in the United States as in Britain or Canada, where there are government-run medical systems. There are more than twice as many CT scanners per capita in the United States as in Canada and more than four times as many per capita as in Britain.
Is it surprising that such things cost money?
The cost of developing a new pharmaceutical is now about a billion dollars. Neither political rhetoric nor government bureaucracies will make those costs go away.
We can, of course, refuse to pay these and other medical costs, just as we can refuse to buy air-conditioned homes with built-in microwave ovens. But that just means we pay attention only to prices and not to the value of what we get for those prices.

Yup I do remember. France was only the top of the body count of the elderly compared with other nations in Europe. That summer was quite extreme.
There is lots of old buildings in Europe which are not well insulated. Maybe that is the reason why there is so few A/C systems in place. It would be an 'incredible energy waste'. Just a thought.

Sorry did it, I even had a cooler with diet Dr Pepper to get be through the 12 hours of labor coaching. It was only two nurses and paper cups in the recovery room and I had permission to bring it in.
Made me curious to see if I was the only one, but there are more. Here's one I found with a quick goggle.

Of course. We are probably closer than far, but you said something about 'being nuts' and some ALL CAPSBOLD typing. You speak well. As serious as it is, let's keep the voices down and the steely glint in our eyes.
A steady and strong argument at modulated levels makes the occasional and opportune shout out or passionate response have more impact. However, if the shouting out or passionate responses are the norm, we lose the audience. It we turn into and echo chamber or 'Obama this, Obama that,' then we lose.

IIRC it was 15 thousand people who died. All because the French take the month of August off and no one bothered to check on the elderly during that time.
The French are weird about heat anyhow. Last summer in a train going across the hot interior of France my daughter and I asked if the windows could be opened a little because the AC wasn't working (shock!) and the conductor opened them. As soon as he was gone the French people got up and shut them. Didn't like the cooler air....

Do you remember several years ago, there was a heat wave in France and hundreds of elderly people died? Reading the coverage, I just came to the conclusion that the French didn't give a rat's ass about old people and were not interested in taking the effort or expense of saving them.

About 10-15 Thousand Elderly Died in FRANCE that summer. Amazingly, part of the reason was a worldwide A/C Shortage - mostly caused by Newly Liberated Iraq.
