Captain America #100, Big Premiere Issue

Lifestyle • Views: 11,839

Tonight’s photo from the Lizard Collection is a Marvel Silver Age classic: the first appearance of the revived Captain America in his own magazine, published in April 1968.

Captain America was originally conceived during World War II, as a sickly wimp who took an experimental drug and gained super powers. He had an indestructible shield that he could throw like a boomerang, given to him by FDR himself. Nazis messed with Captain America at their peril.

In the post-war 1950s Captain America’s popularity declined, so he went into suspended animation as all superheroes must. In 1964, he was revived by The Avengers, and became a very popular Marvel comic in an era of campus unrest; even with that flag costume, somehow the Cap stayed cool.

Oh.

Captain America was the alter ego of Steve Rogers, a sickly young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort. Captain America wears a costume that bears an American flag motif, and is armed with an indestructible shield that can be thrown as a weapon.

It's great to see comic books as books, not a "new" movie. Wait... Uh Oh

The Death of Captain America looks like it might be good.

Not that it's the first time a major character has been "killed for real!!!11" in the comic world'.

Iron Man is the one I likes. The others not so much. But I am biased, there are so many good new ideas getting no shot, they just green light the "known' stories. A shame.

This is a big book right now, with a Captain America movie recently cast. That copy looks stellar. The whites are prone to yellow, and those are WHITE. Send it to Sarasota.

Just watched "Bonneville"...It was a good movie!

I was always an X-Men fan but Captain America has always been "the" good guy. One of the few who transcended the limitations of the "Golden" age of comics.

Somewhat OT, anyone here read David Brin's "Thor Meets Captain America"?

I loved the Thor comics.

But, now, every time I think of Thor, I think of the joke where the woman says to him,

I am Captain America. But I like to let the FBI take care of those pesky domestic terrorists for me.

Michael Lackomar, a spokesman for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia, said one of his team leaders got a frantic phone call Saturday evening from members of Hutaree, a Christian militia group, who said their property in southwest Michigan was being raided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"They said they were under attack by the ATF and wanted a place to hide," Lackomar said. "My team leader said, 'no thanks.' "

Uh-oh...you mean there are some militias who aren't willing to go Waco with their comrades at arms? Things are going to be a bit uncomfortable at the next spaghetti feed.

No, but it does say something about the militia mentality. I think some are just hobbiests who want to be prepared if "Red Dawn" ever becomes a reality. Getting on the wrong side of the US Government kind of screws up that fantasy.

Since we're back on Michigan Militia talk, since I used to live there (Holland, the other side of the state), I have WOODTV channel 8 on my FB feed, and they had the story linked. The much more interesting reading though were the comments underneath. FB has already had to delete one comment. I'm sure they're keeping an eye out for others too. There are a lot of crazy people out there who are deeply conspiratorial. By the way, the guy who got deleted, I managed to go to his page before they completely got rid of his comment and guess which news outlet he just loves? You betcha, Fox News. Why am I so not surprised?

Plus they enjoy me little tales of the blogosphere, including extemporaneous ditties about Brookly Red the Apoplectic and Mandy the Horny Nun.

It's like the RoP. Even among hardcore Islamists very few of them are willing to strap on a bomb. It's that tiny minority that are willing to go that extra step that are a problem.
With the militias there's an extra problem beyond anything the RoP ever accomplished; support from a sizable portion of the American people. Militia mentality is being mainstreamed through the Tea Parties through the Paulians and Oathkeepers. These Tea Parties are endorsed by the Republican leadership. This is far beyond anything The RoP and CAIR ever got close to. It's a big deal.

No, not like the Crips. The Crips are a street gang. Such gangs want money and power and are generally confined to poor areas where most of their killing is against other gang members. Militias are composed of people whose primary motives are political. They are less concerned with money and concerned with shifting the direction of the entire country. Some of them are willing to use violence to do so.

Respectfully disagree. The Jihad enjoys backing from actual nation-states, and has for the past quarter-century at least. Saudi Arabia defused its domestic terrorism potential by exporting all those radical imams overseas. Witness the clashes in Nigeria, which are not age-old, but due to Wahabist subversion. Iran, well, we all know what Iran has gotten up to over the years. Remember Steve Emerson, whose documentary was featured on Frontline back in the 90s, recounting how radical Islam was poisoning America's mosques. And for which he had to live semi-underground for years afterward, for his own safety. And then there's the ambient, free-floating bloodlust that animates independent groups and "self-dispatched" jihadists.

Yes, the militias are a problem, and may yet cause actual trouble. But no way are they in the same league as The Jihad.

I'm not freaked out. But I do tend to worry about terrorists more than I worry about drug crime. Some of that, if I'm to be honest, is that terrorism seems more random whereas drug crimes occur mostly in places I do not go to people I do not know.

I have absolutely no reason to be queried by the FBI... if it was really them, then they can just show up at my house with some official ID or something like that or they can find some other way to prove they are who they say they are... but a blind phone call, no way, go to hell.

There are so many complications; soil, sun, location, weather, etc. It's pretty much incomprehensible. There's also the wine snob factor. Much of what is written about grape growing and wine making is steeped in 1,000's of years tradition and written by connoisseurs with refined palates. If I can manage to grow grapes and fashion them into a drinkable wine then I'll be more than happy. I buy shitty cheap wine now, If I can grow my own shitty cheap wine at least I'll be saving money.

Vines are a big commitment. You should at a minimum research what will prosper in your climate & soil conditions. You might be too "wet" during the grape maturation times, for example, for some kinds of grapes. You might also happen to have the "perfect, magic soil" for a grape that you hate to drink, and selling the fruit would make you money. LOTS of variables. Nothing KNOWN until the vines you plant, bear fruit. *Agriculture Lady rant now off*

Which reminds me of a cool story concerning my cousin in Ca. Many moons ago he was a Navy communications guy in Hawaii and got sent home for shore leave unexpectedly. While there his mom got a call and they told her it was the White House. At first she laughed and thought it was a prank from one of his friends. After being asked two more times for her son, the woman on the other side told my aunt in a more serious tone that it was in fact the WH and could they please speak with her son. She realized then that it might actually be the Wh. Gave the phone to my cousin, and shortly thereafter he worked as the Reagan WH head of electronic communications. I have a pic of him standing next to Reagan at an event with Michigan GOP rep. Guy Vander jagt. Very cool. In fact the only reason I have the pic is b/c my dad saw the pic in the local historical library and immediately recognized my cousin. The library had no idea who he was. Now they do.

re: #144 Floral Giraffe

I did a decent amount of research. Not many reds do well in my area. The best bet is the problematic Pinot Noir. There are issues with spraying fungicides in my garden since I also grow mushrooms. I'm starting out with a dozen vines and I'll expand depending on how well things go. I'm growing them on the fringes of my potager style vegetable garden and will probably plant them in the French style (close spacing and close the the ground) which supposedly helps them to ripen earlier. We have a short season here but it is hot and dry. I think I can figure it out.

I never heard that word before. Potager.

I suppose it is the hoity toity version of a raised bed. I built one 35 feet by 4 feet this January. Had a bitch of a time filling it since the truckload of dirt I got kept freezing on me.

However, I have to ask what mushrooms and what method?

I've tried a few logs for fun in the past, but collect a lot of Chanterelles (even found some black ones) every summer, Chicken of the Woods, Oyster and a few others. Funny thing is in north Georgia even the locals who know every plant and animal and are all part Cherokee, don't even know there are edible mushrooms outside of Wallmart. All the more for us.
