Monday Afternoon Music: Michael Brecker Band, ‘Midnight Voyage’

Music • Views: 6,562

Here’s a sanity break while I finish writing code for a new embedded slideshow feature — Michael Brecker and a stellar band in 1997 at the “Live By The Sea” music festival in Tokyo, with Pat Metheny (guitar), Joey Calderazzo (keyboards), Jack DeJohnette (drums), and Dave Holland (bass). The tune is “Midnight Voyage” from the album Tales from the Hudson. (Note that there are two videos in the playlist, and the volume level is a bit on the low side.)

Dems are getting smart: Patriot Majority PAC Going After Tea Party Candidates

Patriot Majority PAC, a group created last year by Democratic Party strategist Craig Varoga, has a new mission -- make sure the U.S. House and Senate stay Tea Party free.
....
Varoga's PAC hopes to combat the influence of the Tea Party by targeting 12 to 15 races involving candidates from the conservative movement and launching an independent counter-attack of television, radio and online ads, according to Cillizza.

As the electoral battles go forward, Varoga also hopes to establish Patriot Majority PAC as an archive of negative information on the Tea Party movement. In a tweet on Monday, the PAC asked "Citizens Across US to Help Monitor Violence."

Politicians associated with the Tea Parties are going to have a tough time if the Dems play this right.

You are welcome to them. However, I suspect is that the ulterior motive of this group is to make sure everyone who isn't on the Dem reservation is "associated" with the Tea Partiers.

Bad news, Wingnuts; It's more good news....
U.S. stocks, commodities up on view of sustained growth

U.S. stocks and commodities climbed Monday after the government reported another monthly rise in consumer spending, supplying additional evidence of a sustained economic recovery.

"The bull market is transitioning from a liquidity-driven, asset repricing advance toward one driven by earnings gains and corporate stock purchases," said Carmine Grigoli, chief investment strategist at Mizuho Securities USA Inc.

I got fed up at the Home Depot the other day when after trying to convince the self-service register that the seed packets I purchsed really were dropped into the bag TWELVE STINKING TIMES it declined my card because it couldn't read the strip correctly. After waiting several minutes for the checkout monitor to come help me she took my card and held it in her hand with another customers card while she assisted them with their purchase. I finally asked for my card back and handed her the three bags full of merchandise saying "thanks but I think I'll go accross the street to Lowes and get this stuff over there".

Yeah- self checkout is a tool of the evil one.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Insults and threats followed 15-year-old Phoebe Prince almost from her first day at South Hadley High School, targeting the Irish immigrant in the halls, library and in vicious cell phone text messages.

Phoebe, ostracized for having a brief relationship with a popular boy, reached her breaking point and hanged herself after one particularly hellish day in January — a day that, according to officials, included being hounded with slurs and pelted with a beverage container as she walked home from school.

Now, nine teenagers face charges in what a prosecutor called "unrelenting" bullying, including two teen boys charged with statutory rape and a clique of girls charged with stalking, criminal harassment and violating Phoebe's civil rights.

re: #74 RogueOne

Remember the teenage girl who was bullied so badly she killed herself in MA a couple months ago? They charged 9 teens today:

That poor girl.

I have a friend who was bullied everyday in highschool by a clique of girls (name calling, pushing into lockers, crap written on bathroom walls, ect.) and it has taken her years to get over it.
She's 40 now.

(her family was pretty dysfunctional so she just took it and NO ONE at the school ever noticed anything.)

I on the other hand had a pretty great family, but let a small clique of girls in 5 and 6th grade torment me, never complained until one of the Nuns finally took matters into her own hands and got it all to stop.
I have no idea what she did.
We moved after that and I never saw the girls again but I still remember their names.

I can't imagine how much more horrible bulling is now with cell phones and Youtube.

Basic self defense is simple. Keep your head on straight, learn to take a hit, and how to disengage. 99% of the time, your best defense is going to be getting the hell out of dodge as fast as you can. Shelling out big bucks for some "exotic" training is just a waste.

I don't know... I like to play Tai-chi and it has served me well but if things get real there is nothing like a blunt instrument.

It's a heartbreaking story. I have to ask, though, would this be going to court if she hadn't killed herself? Civil Rights violations from 16 year olds? I had my share of being bullied as a kid, and I feel for the victims, but is this how we're supposed to go about this.

I'm not passing judgment either, just trying to sort it all out in my head.

I'm not sure how I feel about it either. I looked for more info but that story seemed to be the best write up. I don't know that I have enough info to decide if arresting them was appropriate or not.

Odd that the Moscow subway double suicide bombing hasn't made it into a thread topic.

Individuals cannot do much in the way of self defense when the threat is explosions. Collective self defense can take on several forms:

(1) rope-a-dope: take your hits. Maybe they cannot do enough damage to matter. Harden targets so as to limit the damage sustained when they do strike. This is cheapest and if the attacks do not rise beyond some threshold, least trouble all around. But there are limits.

(2) Cloak and dagger. Penetrate their networks, capture and interrogate some members. Cloak and dagger work must thread between the rocks of too nice and too nasty. Nice, and you achieve nothing. Nasty, and you make too many enemies and you get nowhere with your human intelligence efforts.

(3) War. Break up the society or the organization from which the attacks are coming. Fight nicely, but answer nukes with nukes if your conventional forces cannot prevail without. This is very expensive, and the moral lines you must cross on this path are far thicker and graver than any version of (2). Break glass in case of need, but you'll have red all over your hands and it won't be dye. Also, you must break the glass with your bare hands and you'll get cut.

Woot! Bondage club under RNC expenses. NRO has the excuse scoop:

‘Bondage’ Cash Was for Young Donor After-Party [Daniel Foster]

From the Orange County, California, conservative blog Red County:

According to sources who were in attendance that night, the "official" part of the evening started with 50+ person dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel, then carried on throughout the evening, eventually ending up at Voyeur. While RNC employees, who were in town to recruit members to its "RNC Young Eagles" program, did participate throughout the entire evening and did find their way to the bondage-themed club, Michael Steele himself was "not in attendance" for any portion of the evening. Brown, by the way, is reportedly a "Young Eagle" himself, a fundraising sub-group of the RNC which targets larger donors based on age group.

So I'm looking at this page over at NRO and what do I see? A banner ad for the 2010 NRO Portugal and Spain Riverboat Cruise II noting special guest, former director of the Christian Coalition, Ralph Reed!

Picked up the scoop at HuffPo.

I see we go a kookspiracy theory linked up as a spinoff link.

Representative Michael Burgess (R-Texas) told CNSNews.com that if the mandate in the health care law requiring individuals to purchase health insurance or be penalized is upheld by the courts, the federal government could mandate anything, such as requiring all Americans to purchase a General Motors car.

As reported by CNS News which is a little better than World Nut Daily.

Yeah, and the government is going to mandate a GPS in every car to tell you what to drive.
