Sullivan on Breitbart

Blogosphere • Views: 22,172

Andrew Sullivan’s right on this one; Andrew Breitbart’s offer of $100,000 to anyone who’ll provide him with the contents of private email list Journolist, as I wrote yesterday, is ethically (and possibly legally) beyond the pale: Politics As Total War.

When Andrew Breitbart offers $100,000 for a private email list-serv archive, essentially all bets are off. Every blogger or writer who has ever offered an opinion is now on warning: your opponents will not just argue against you, they will do all they can to ransack your private life, cull your email in-tray, and use whatever material they have to unleash the moronic hounds of today’s right-wing base.

Yes, the Economist was right. This is not about transparency, or hypocrisy. It’s about power. And when you are Andrew Breitbart, power is all that matters. There is not a whit of thoughtfulness about this, not an iota of pretense that it might actually advance the conversation about how to deal with, say, a world still perilously close to a second Great Depression, a government that is bankrupt, two wars that have been or are being lost, an energy crisis that is also threatening our planet’s ecosystem, and a media increasingly incapable of holding the powerful accountable.

Read it all here.

Of course, if you agree with Andrew Sullivan, you can count on creepy bottom feeding hacks like Breitbart to write things like this:

Perhaps Sullivan and Charles Johnson should share a townhouse in the bizarro editorial no-man’s land that they both now inhabit.

Hurr hurr!

This is what the right now is: no solutions, just anger, paranoia, insecurity and partisan hatred.

Right on, Mr. Sullivan.

27 researchok  Wed, Jun 30, 2010 4:40:41pm

Breitbart is an ass.

He is deliberately conflating Sullivan’s bad acts with his own, implying a kind of equivalence.

Sullivan may be an ass (his treatment of Palin has been nothing short of shameful and despicable) but he only undermined himself. Breitbart is attempting to undermine private communications for no other reason than to threaten those he disagrees with.

Sullivan may at be be off the rails. Breitbart is a bully and no more. His actions call into question whatever minimum of journalistic credibility he had left.

He is using his bully pulpit in the same way Julius Striecher used Der Sturmer to threaten and intimidate opponents of the Reich and anyone or group he thought was a danger to his ideology.

His antithesis to CJ and LGF is also easily understood. CJ sees right through him- and sees him exactly for what he is- a moral fraud.

Let’s just say he isn’t as big as he wants everyone to believe.

Breitbart will hurt anyone in his way, like any bully. The right had better learn that soon. He is no friend to integrity.

Judge grants ex-Israeli spy US asylum

[Link: www.jpost.com…]

WASHINGTON – The son of a Hamas founder who spied for Israel will be granted asylum in the US, a judge in San Diego ruled Wednesday.

Mosab Yousef, 32, had been threatened with deportation for engaging in terrorist activities, as detailed in his recent autobiography, though it was done in the service of Israel during his nine years as an undercover agent.

Wednesday’s hearing lasted 15 minutes, with the judge ruling that Yousef can stay in the United States – where he has lived since 2007 – after he passes a routine background check.

US Department of Homeland Security attorney Kerri Calcador said she was dropping objections to asylum, with no further explanation given of the rationale behind the decision.

Already a fan of the players, for years. The LP is a recurring theme with the players I happen to really like. Not that most of them have one guitar. Most have entire collections, and each one has a unique tone or purpose with that particular player.

I covet their collections. I have no talent, intuition, or ability, personally. I can’t think of anyone less suited to learn guitar at my age. My brother says I’m padding my obituary.

Lizards..Today is a very very sad day for me…I told the morning shift this today.
My dear friend Joe was told he has Brain cancer and they found it too late..
He is 41 years old and will die within 3 months.. There is no hope..
First this morning was shock then anger and every emotion known to Man.
Joe isn’t just a good guy..He is that rare man that is nice, Sweet, smart and friendly..He always is without guile.. A very special person..And a very positive person. I am so lucky to have him as a friend..
Why do the best leave us?
I want you lizards to do me only one favor.. I have never put anyone I know on our prayer list on Sunday mornings…Not one person..I have never asked anything here.
I ask you pray for Joe this Sunday morning.. Not that he is healed..He is going to die… But for this..
The last 3 words George Washington said on his Deathbed was, ‘I die hard’
Pray that Joe doesn’t die hard and spends peaceful time with friends and Family.. He of all people should not suffer…
Thank you..

I think of the word ‘blitzkrieg’ as meaning a slash-and-burn warfare campaign, not so much as a complete comparison to the Third Reich. I don’t really think Biden was intending a Nazi comparison, when you read his whole rant in context:

“As things heat up, you can expect House Democrats will be hit with a GOP blitzkrieg of vicious Swift-Boat-style attack ads, Karl Rove-inspired knockout tactics, thinly veiled attempts at character assassination and tea party disruptions.”

Without getting into any of that, I still believe this kind of monetary offer for private emails is crossing a very dangerous line.

It’s intimidation, pure and simple. There are very real risks in having your real identity exposed. Those risks fall disprorotionately on those who aren’t privileged in society or are challenging the kind of privilege that Breitbart revels in, as his homophobic comment at you proves.

it is not the blitz thing that I take issue with, Lord knows both sides compare the other to Hitler & Nazis all the time. It is the claiming the moral high-ground “And while the GOP is mounting a blitzkrieg, Democrats are the allies.” that I take issue with… the issue is not the use of the word blitzkrieg it the comparison. IMHO

Good point. Recall the BusHitler, ‘concentration camps are coming tsunami’, ad nauseum..

re: #122 brookly red

LOL, what is the old saying?
if at 20 you are not a liberal you have no heart & if by 40 you are not a conservative you have no brain.

That quote, as used by conservatives, is nonsense.

: : The quotation usually attributed to Churchill is, “If you’re not Liberal when you’re 25, you have no heart. If you’re not Conservative when you’re 35, you have no brain.” However, the attribution is false. There is no record of Churchill ever speaking these words, and it is highly unlikely that he would have because Churchill himself did precisely the opposite. He entered politics as a Conservative and was a Conservative at age 25. He switched to the Liberal Party at age 29 and was a Liberal at age 35. (He returned to the Conservatives at age 49.) Also, his beloved wife, Clementine, was a life-long Liberal, and Churchill would hardly have delivered such an indirect insult to her.

: : It should also be remembered that “Liberal” and “Conservative” are the proper names of British political parties and do not translate precisely to the left and right wings of the American political spectrum. That is too long a subject for this space, but it can fairly be said that Churchill’s political viewpoint and guiding principles did not change radically, despite his twice switching his allegiance. In Churchill’s own view, changes in the party, not in himself, compelled his party switches.

Thank you..
Hard to type through tears..Everything is blurred

Hoops, Prayers sent. I’ll be praying Sunday as well.

Breitbart is a punk and Sullivan still suffers from Bush and Palin Derangement Syndrome. I guess the inside baseball blogosphere stuff get those two going.
Meanwhile I know two friends that were laid off this week and I know the company I work for is struggling to survive in this economy.

I remember in 1983 all the big network news anchors came to my hometown, Johnstown, PA to interview people that were struggling in a town with the highest unemployment rate in the country. All of the news interviews were done to prove how “Reaganomics” wasn’t working. Why don’t I see Katie or Brian going around smalltown USA asking why “Obamanomics” has failed?

Most likely. But since I rarely vote Democrat, it hardly pertains in my case. Most of the time, its for the Water Reclamation District here in Cook County. I’ve actually met some of the people who’ve served on its board, and thus I will vote for a Dem carrying those people’s endorsement. For legislatures, I’ve never voted for a Democrat, ever. Apologies for the string of healthcare questions, but is it possible for a person to be on VA healthcare and Medicaid? I can’t find anything on this online.

I’m working this from my FIL’s experience. He is a recently-deceased retiree. The VA system is largely hospital-based, with some aspects of retirement care. Its major function right now, however is to care for the large numbers of severely wounded returning from SWA. They have obvious priority. The system has had a mixed reputation, but is said now to have become what it always should have been.
“Medicaid” is limited and targeted at the very low income part of the population, in contrast to “Medicare” which is related to Social Security, thus heavily age-related. I would hope military retirees would not be indigent enough to be Medicaid-eligible, but can’t say it wouldn’t happen.

BLAGOJEVICH: I’m willing to trade the thing I got tightly held, to her for something she doesn’t hold quite as tightly. How bad do you want what I have and can you get the other person who’s really got the, this, you know, who’s, who had that, to do it. If you’re her, you’re Valerie Jarrett, I could be a U.S. senator and a seat I, I can hold.

SCOFIELD: Yeah. (UI)probably forever, yeah.

BLAGOJEVICH: Huh? That guy’s holding it by himself and now I know he’s willing to give it to me if he gets somethin’ I have, I’m hold-, and I’m holding to some extent, right? If you’re her, what do you think?

SCOFIELD: It’s awfully hard. You want to figure out a way to get it done if you’re her.

BLAGOJEVICH: That’s what I’m thinkin’. Gotta think I can at least be ambassador to Macedonia now.

re: #125 Charles

Blitzkrieg isn’t “slash and burn” warfare though. It’s “lightning war,” rapid advances spearheaded by air power and mobile, mechanized artillery. When well-executed and with plenty of luck, it may actually result in less collateral damage and destruction than a “slash and burn” campaign, since it involves quickly seizing key cities, bridges, etc., surrounding and cutting off enemy forces, etc.

“Slash and burn” sounds more like Sherman’s March to the Sea. That wasn’t a rapid, “lightning” advance…it was a slow wave of destruction, designed to utterly demoralize the civilian population by demonstrating that their soldiers could no longer protect them.

Study links bee decline to cell phones

No, really this time.

A new study has suggested that cell phone radiation may be contributing to declines in bee populations in some areas of the world.

Bee populations dropped 17 percent in the UK last year, according to the British Bee Association, and nearly 30 percent in the United States says the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Parasitic mites called varroa, agricultural pesticides and the effects of climate change have all been implicated in what has been dubbed “colony collapse disorder” (CCD).

But researchers in India believe cell phones could also be to blame for some of the losses.

In a study at Panjab University in Chandigarh, northern India, researchers fitted cell phones to a hive and powered them up for two fifteen-minute periods each day. After three months, they found the bees stopped producing honey, egg production by the queen bee halved, and the size of the hive dramatically reduced.
It’s not just the honey that will be lost if populations plummet further.

Bees are estimated to pollinate 90 commercial crops worldwide. Their economic value in the UK is estimated to be $290 million per year and around $12 billion in the U.S.

Find another hospital, if possible. Or do what my sister did when my dad was sick. Blow up the administrator’s phone.

Apparently she has another surgery to go, and that’s scheduled for tomorrow. I’d rather the surgeries be done before we talk about transferring.

On another note… shouldn’t the hospital be calling me to tell me that she’s going into surgery? I mean, the billing department had no trouble finding my cell number.

That’s good news. May your mom’s health continue to improve and be able to go out of the hospital.

As I predicted. A lot of bloggers (Cal Thomas, Pam Geller, etc.) were getting a little hysterical saying he was going to be deported — which as you know comes with the usual baggage of indicting the current administration. They failed to note the fact that this hearing was also an amnesty hearing.

The administration wanted him to go away with DHS pushing for his removal. If not for the uproar he would have been sent packing.
