O hai honcos.
I've been feeling not myself all day today, not really in a lot of pain but just very blah.
I completely forgot I was supposed to bake challah today. No big deal, but it's something I usually do early in the afternoon. I just made the dough.
Have not decided on what to bake for Pie Day. I thought I might try Chess Pie.

I don't need anything else hanging from it in my way. It's bad enough that they give us stickers and little flap of cardboard that stick to our badges, and all sorts of promotional material to attached to ourselves. We've like walking billboards sometimes...
And try working, both hands and arms flying, in and out of the shopping cart, with an apron and cardboard crap getting in your way.
Anyway...

support for the health insurance reform bill continues to go up, according to the latest kaiser foundation poll. their measurement puts it at 50% approve to 35% oppose now overall. but then there are these disturbing findings:
On the other hand, large shares of seniors mistakenly believe the law includes provisions that cut some previously universal Medicare benefits and creates “death panels.” Half of seniors (50%) say the law will cut benefits that were previously provided to all people on Medicare, and more than a third (36%) incorrectly believe the law will “allow a government panel to make decisions about end-of-life care for people on Medicare.”
Despite the fact that Medicare’s actuaries predict the health reform law will extend the life of the Medicare Part A Trust Fund by 12 years (from 2017 to 2029), only 14 percent of seniors know this and nearly half (45%) of seniors think the health reform law will weaken the financial condition of the fund.

here in the bay area the opposition comes from people who are seriously disappointed that there was no "public option", so that all the money is funneled into private insurance companies
otherwise it is very popular, especially with all the health professionals in my family
For what it is worth, insurance companies are right at the top of my sh-t list. Not because they couldn't be what they should be, namely collective sharing of risk, but because they manipulate the system to narrow the territories to cherry picked profitability factors. Needless to say, our legislators work to allow them to maximize profit regardless of consumer benefit.
We do have a public option insurance that works pretty well. So well in fact that there is no for profit alternative. It is called Flood Insurance and I don't hear anyone raising Cain because of the unfairness of it.

i read that we are the only country in the world that allows health insurance companies to profit on basic - basic - health insurance. this was stated in this article: Five Myths About Health Care Around The World
list of myths:
1. It's all socialized medicine out there.
2. Overseas, care is rationed through limited choices or long lines.
3. Foreign health-care systems are inefficient, bloated bureaucracies.
4. Cost controls stifle innovation.
5. Health insurance has to be cruel.

Possibly. I think they are also highly motivated to make this work. This is a free market solution and if it fails the next option is single payer and the insurance companies go bust. no bating, no audience look around you... the only reason I haven't been dinged to pieces is that I am so spot on even the most partisan back off.
You're not spot on, You're a broken record.

And another point I would like to make is, if they repeal it, what solutions will there be for those with pre-existing conditions. I've heard little from the Republican what about what to do with those with Pre-Existing conditions like Diabetes, Autism, and others. If the republicans get rid of it, what safeguards will there be for those with Pre-Existing conditions?
surely, uninsured ill people will ultimately cost all of us more than if they are insured, not to mention the suffering of those involved

the alternative is to line up bipartisan support and everyone hit them at once...but of course Israel will have to do the dirty work alone, and take the hit for it...life is so unfair
israel will be blamed/credited for any attack, whether they do it or not. but israel is going to try to minimize damage to civilians (as it always does) by making it surgical and containing the fallout to the remote areas where thje reactors are located. they're not going to carpet bomb and allow radiation to spread across the whole country. they will use intel and be precise, possibly with the help of iranians and russians whom they have paid off. they're the only ones with the political balls to do this job.

say what you want about the Beach Boys...poor musicians, bots who's harmonies never changed, cannot perform live etc...
I saw them in the early 70s in Denver and they blew me away with their tight playing and superior stage presence...these cats were pretty damned good at their peak...check out the bass line here...and as always, rock on brothers and sisters

You have anything hard? Because nothing other than the Repubs trying to pass a resolution supporting such action has popped up here.

A PEC does not apply to everybody, with all insurance companies, necessarily.
For example:
If I am employed by a company, I usually have x number of days after my first date of employment to decide if I want the insurance, and if I decide I do, then I and my family members are fully covered, not necessarily from date of employment, but as soon as I've made the first full month's premium payment. No PEC is applied to any member of the family.
However, if I choose to avoid the group plan, but a year later decide that I want coverage for my family and me, then the PEC would be applied.
The reason this is this way is to avoid having people who just don't want to pay the insurance premium, who LATER get sick and decide they need the insurance, from picking it up and having full coverage for an illness that occurred during a period of time when they COULD have had coverage but weren't paying for it, like everyone else in the company is paying.
Very often, state Medicaid plans have temporary stop-gap catastrophic coverage for people who don't meet the usual income guidelines, but become catastrophically ill.
Now - the situation may be different for a person getting his own coverage because he doesn't have access to an employer group plan, but only, I believe, if the person had NO COVERAGE whatsoever from any insurance plan. If you move from one plan to another, I think the PEC does not apply in many cases.
Anyhow - I understand the need for people to have coverage when they're ill. Which is why you buy insurance before you need it.
The PEC stuff exists to keep people from buying insurance after they discover they're ill, using the insurance for coverage, and then dropping the insurance as soon as they don't need the coverage anymore. If everyone did that, the premiums would be astronomically high, they would have to be as much as the care itself was costing - otherwise, how can a company provide coverage, if what they are taking in in premiums is LESS than what they are paying out in claims? I'm not sure there would be any point to even having such a thing as "health insurance".

this is true enough, except that it turns out that in practice insurance companies usually lose money on the payment/claims equation, and mainly make their profits on investment
i'll look up the description of this for you, if you like...

re: #223 reine.de.tout
here is a description from the property and casualty insurance industry from wikipedia:
In the United States, the underwriting loss of property and casualty insurance companies was $142.3 billion in the five years ending 2003. But overall profit for the same period was $68.4 billion, as the result of float. Some insurance industry insiders, most notably Hank Greenberg, do not believe that it is forever possible to sustain a profit from float without an underwriting profit as well, but this opinion is not universally held.

well the ones you fear gaining control... are we not a democracy? should not the majority rule?
Sorry to be late on this. Got distracted by dinner.
I would just like to point out that real democracy is not winner take all, or rule all, like the beginners think.

Thanks for the info.
If lots of people only buy health insurance when they become ill, and they drop it when they no longer need it, where is the money for the "float"? I don't think it would be there.

too bad she won't stand her ground...there is little to be gained from retreating...if she's a Christian than nobody can change that via a bunch of fringe fervor
She's remaining Christian, just not within the Catholic Church. I just read her FB page.

Yep, she's just not down with calling herself a Christian anymore due to the organized hate groups
When her son came out as gay, she had a hard time reconciling that with her Catholicism. I think I read that her priest told her her son would not go to Hell if he was abstinent, something like that.
I'm sure she has realized she can love her son, love Jesus, and pursue Heaven at the same time.

At least that's my take on it. She also wrote that she quit being a Christian but is still a follower of Christ.

I read this and the couple of posts above and I thought "Anne Rice?".
Looking around I see I was right.
Does that mean she is going to start writing about gay vampires again?

I'm curious, are there many Christians on LGF? I notice a lot of the times Charles loves to run stories about Christian fundamentalists and their anti-gay/anti-abortion/anti any religion except Christianity activities but surely people such as those don't represent all Christians?

I can assure you that LGF has its share of intelligent, rational, and compassionate Christian lizards in its ranks.
