Cain Blames Drop in Support on ‘Confusion’

Those brainwashed voters
Wingnuts • Views: 26,993

I have to agree with Herman Cain that one of the big reasons for his plummeting popularity is “confusion.”

Oh… wait. He meant other people’s confusion.

“Obviously false accusations and confusion about some of my positions has contributed to it,” Cain said on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked by host Candy Crowley about his campaign’s flagging poll numbers.

Cain said criticism over his position on abortion and foreign policy matters was fueled largely by comments that were taken out of context, leading to voter confusion.

“Some people are heavily influenced by perception more so than reality,” Cain said.

The big primary election news today is the endorsement of Gingrich by the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper.

Intrade has been crazy this week.

Romney drops below 60 percent for the first time in weeks.
Gingrich is over 20 percent!!!!
Huntman and Ron Paul are both at 6 percent.
Cain around 3, while hilarious old Perry cannot even reach 2 percent.

President as Piñata

Then again, Republicans face a similar enthusiasm gap with their likely nominee, Mitt Romney. (Republicans keep searching for any other candidate who they think would be electable, when they already have one: Jon Huntsman. They just don’t like him.)

Earlier this month, I asked Bill Clinton — who has a better intuitive feel for politics than anyone I know — about Obama’s chances for re-election. “I’ll be surprised if he’s not re-elected,” Clinton said, adding that Obama would do better when matched against a specific opponent like Romney.

Clinton said that Romney did “a very good job” as governor of Massachusetts and would be a credible general election candidate. But Clinton added that Romney or any Republican nominee would be hampered by “a political environment in the Republican primary that basically means you can’t be authentic unless you’ve got a single-digit I.Q.”

Strategy Page’s take on the NATO airstrike on Pakistani troops:

November 26, 2011: On the Afghan border, NATO aircraft and helicopter gunships attacked two Pakistani border posts, killing 28 Pakistani troops and border guards. Exactly what happened is still unclear, but the Pakistani military media machine promptly declared it to be a NATO attack on Pakistan. This forced the Pakistani government to close the two main supply routes carrying NATO supplies to Afghanistan and order the U.S. to leave a Pakistani air base. All this has happened before, and eventually the supply routes are reopened. That’s because moving NATO supplies is a big business in Pakistan, and much of that business is at risk. That is because of delays and thefts, which have caused most of that traffic to move to Central Asia. Eventually, nearly all the supplies will come in from the north. The more Pakistan messes with that traffic, the faster they will lose what trucking business they still have from NATO. Pakistan has ordered the U.S. out of those airbases in the past, but nothing ever happens. Nevertheless, the U.S. has been moving UAV operations to Afghanistan anyway. The Pakistanis cannot be trusted, especially along the border. Since the border guards and paramilitary police in the tribal territory are recruited from the tribes, the Taliban can also recruit, bribe or coerce these troops to fire on NATO and Afghan forces. Border patrol bases are often used for this, and NATO air strikes and artillery will be used to support the NATO and Afghan ground troops that are under attack. Since Pakistan officially denies that their paramilitary forces often work for the Taliban, they declare that the casualties from NATO forces defending themselves are “unprovoked attacks on Pakistan.” That fiction works for a while in the Pakistani media, but most Pakistanis know better.

re: #71 ProLifeLiberal

Yeah I did. Curious, but not surprising. They have to get things cheap, for redevelopment purposes, and India’s government has had an idiotic tendency recently to see Bangladesh as a threat.

I would much rather the US focus on getting better relations between Bangladesh and India, than India and Pakistan. It’s not like we haven’t tried everything to get Pakistan to become less aggressive.

Also, I wouldn’t mind some sort of deal with Bangladesh or arms, so they don’t have to buy from China. A deal for reduced cost.

For ships, we can that. For tanks, not so much. China has relatively cheap export models who cost we cannot match. There is also the matter of weight. The M1 is very heavy and many bridges in Bangladesh could not support it.

Bangladesh isn’t good tank country, and in 1971 Pakistan had only a single battalion’s worth of US-built M-24 Chafees in what was then East Pakistan. These fared poorly against the newer PT-76 amphibious light tanks India used. It was the PT-76’s only notable victory over US-built armor in Asia. PT-76s manned by North Vietnamese crews fought a number of engagements against US and South Vietnamese M-41 Walker Bulldog light tanks, and M48A3 Patton medium tanks in 1968-1972, all of which ended in the the PT-76 units being smashed. India had better trained crews than North Vietnam, and her tank units were better organized than the Soviet style organization the NVA used.

When he said in the last debate,

Another problem — Mitt is not Romney’s first name. It is his middle name. His real first name is Willard

I don’t see where I stated that. If you listen to the clip, he makes a claim about Joseph Smith. Since the same claim by the same logic can be made about Jesus, Mohammed and all other religion founders (unless we claim they’re crazy), why would it be fair to single Smith out as a way to assess Romney’s fitness for office?

His use of footage of Obama wasn’t quite as bad as what Grayson did, but it was very bad in my eyes. It’ll prevent me from voting for Romney in the primary, since I don’t support that sort of dishonesty. Mitt seems to have his eyes too closely focused on the prize, to the exclusion of principles and honesty.

If rank dishonest is a deal breaker then who exactly does that leave you with on the Republican side?

114 FemNaziBitch  Sun, Nov 27, 2011 1:43:02pm

I keep getting de Tocqueville references in my head:

But, despite maintaining with Aristotle, Montesquieu, and others that the balance of property determined the balance of power, Tocqueville argued that, as America showed, equitable property holdings did not ensure the rule of the best men. In fact, it did quite the opposite. The widespread, relatively equitable property ownership which distinguished America and determined its mores and values also explained why< the American masses held elites in such contempt.

I’m going to have to review Democracy in America.

Mormons are fine. Their church, like many churches, has a history replete with examples of bigoted exploitation and craven political opportunism.

Irrelevent.

Mormons and Mormonism are being attacked because they are a minority group, and that’s it.

The Southern Baptist Convention was largely founded over the support of slavery. That was a long time ago? That was the year after Joseph Smith died, and yet, people feel comfortable talking about Smith’s veracity and moral standing to attack Mormon candidates, while being a pious Baptist is an asset politically, and any general criticism of Baptists would be reviled, as it should be.

Just to make sure I understood you correctly: So one would have to essentially assume an atheist position when discussing any religion’s founding if one wanted to avoid being a bigot?

Well, once again you didn’t.

In both comments you use over-broad terms - “all criticism of religion”, “discussing any religion’s founding”. We’re not talking about any and all discussion of religions’ foundings, do we?

We’re talking about a specific secular political context - i.e. is the character of the religion’s founder (particularly the one, who died long ago and whose religion heavily evolved since then) directly relevant to the character of a presidential candidate.

If a preacher wants to preach about falseness of all religions but his, that’s hypocritical (AFAIC) but unavoidable - after all, he does still belong to this religion because he thinks it’s true, so others are false (well, as a rule).

If it is made as a secular argument, I don’t see how it is not as bigoted as bringing up Mohammed’s alleged character when discussing a potential Muslim candidate.

You’re from Boston, so you just want to ensure they lose today. Which is OK, since I don’t like the Eagles either. Sadly, the Bears are behind Oakland right now, but only 6-0. And its still the first half. The defense has to keep it close so the offense can try a comeback after halftime.

The team is good, but the loss of Cutler hurts. They should still be able to win against Oakland, but ‘be able to’ doesn’t mean ‘actually will win’. Like I said, if they win it’ll have to come in the second half.

I think I already explained it in a lot of comments. It (the comment about the religions’ foundations) pertains to some circumstances (e.g. secular political debates) but not to others. It’s not there to achieve anything. It’s the most natural way to say it. Should I have excluded any religions? On what basis?

The big primary election news today is the endorsement of Gingrich by the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper.

Intrade has been crazy this week.

Romney drops below 60 percent for the first time in weeks.
Gingrich is over 20 percent!!!
Huntman and Ron Paul are both at 6 percent.
Cain around 3, while hilarious old Perry cannot even reach 2 percent.

Hey, it’s gonna be Huntsman.

Gingrich can’t win because he’s, well, Gingrich. The nutcase field is losing ground because of confusion. Their own, but whatever.
Romney can’t win because he can’t get traction or break out.

By Sherlock Holmes’ process of elimination, however improbably it may seem, Huntsman must be the nominee.

No, criticism of religion is a very broad issue, some parts of it are fully available to the religious. As I said, he was correct on racism being a part of the LDS *doctrine* until 1978. Not every religion has racism as a recent doctrine.

The issue of the founder’s character? That’s where hypocrisy starts.

Well, maintaining a discreet silence about things you’d better be silent about or else, is discretion.
