Full Details of the Iran Nuclear Deal

Iran agrees to neutralize its full stockpile of 20% enriched uranium
World • Views: 26,945

Here’s the detailed synopsis released by the White House of the 6-month deal reached with Iran yesterday.

This actually looks like a pretty good deal to me. Two major points in its favor: Iran commits to halting all uranium enrichment above 5%, and even better, commits to neutralizing their entire stockpile of highly enriched 20% uranium before the end of the first 6-month period. At the very least, this will seriously slow Iran’s progress toward nuclear weapons.

Inspections are greatly strengthened as well, so the international community will be able to get much more information about the current state of Iran’s nuclear programs.

While I have no illusions about Iran’s trustworthiness, even a first step toward peacefully mitigating the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran is better than an unbroken march to war.

It’s a sensible agreement.

Even reaction in Iran seems to be positive.

If we get to dilute the 20% stuff that’d be actual real progress.

It’d be kind of funny if Iran announced next week they’d bought a nuke from Pakistan, which is why they were cool with this treaty.

Reaction from a person that knows things, as opposed to the usual trolls (lookin’ at you Schumer):

For example:

The deal includes unprecedented transparency measures. Notably, the deal provides the IAEA with daily access to Iran’s enrichment facilities at Natanz and Fordow and access to centrifuge assembly facilities and centrifuge component and storage facilities. To reiterate, this is unprecedented.

They’d need much more than one weapon to be a credible threat, especially against Israel’s who-knows-how-many nukes. Using one weapon would be an invitation to have their entire country reduced to radioactive glass.

If they actually get rid of all their 20% uranium, this will be a huge step forward. I look forward to it being proven they have done so.

Yep. There’s the people who believe that the Iranian leadership are sincerely fatalistic, suicidal zealots who will use that nuke against Israel even if it means their own destruction, but they haven’t really shown any signs of actually being unconcerned with their own physical well-being. Iran does a ton of sneaky shit and supports terrorists and supports fighters in other conflicts, they don’t tend to do anything head-on or risk actual confrontation very much.

9 A Mom Anon  Sun, Nov 24, 2013 2:35:12pm

As with anything, any progress is better than zero. What Iran does from this point on no one can know for sure, but this has to be better than tension, threats and hatred being lobbed back and forth. I understand the doubts and naysaying, up to a point, but it’s a baby step forward and that’s better than war or taking steps backward.

My son has a friend from Tehran, a metal musician whose parents left Iran when he was about 10. He seems to be happy about the news, he’s told us before that the majority of people there are under 35 or so and would like to see a more secular and less combative and hard line religious leadership. He’d like to go home someday and be able to play his music without fear of being murdered or imprisoned for it. I hope his dream comes true someday. For now, he’s trying to become a US citizen, I hope he gets to do both.

10 Justanotherhuman  Sun, Nov 24, 2013 2:41:55pm

Rouhani is being the pragmatist in this deal, I think, if reaction in Iran is any indication.

In Iran, Mainly Praise for Nuclear Deal as a Good First Step

nytimes.com

“The agreement is a very big deal,” said Amir Mohebbian, a political analyst who has advised many of Iran’s leaders. But he worried that the Obama administration would run into trouble with Congress over the deal. “Our leader, Khamenei, supports this agreement, which means that there will be no issues from the Iranian side,” he said. “We hope the Americans will also be able to honor their promises.”

Let’s hope it doesn’t fall apart and is just the beginning of better times for not just the US, but Iran, also, for future agreements, and that others (such as Pakistan) will see the folly of following the hardliners.

Cooling things with Iran may have come just in time:

US, Japan war of words with China aflame over disputed islands

A simmering territorial and maritime dispute in Asia erupted at the weekend as Washington warned Beijing it would back Japan militarily in any confrontation arising from China’s latest unilateral assertion of its claims.

The Obama administration weighed in after China moved to in effect “rope off” the seas and skies around the disputed Japanese-administered Senkaku islands in the east China Sea.

SNIP

Fumio Kishida, foreign minister, warned that China’s action “could well lead to an unforeseen situation”. He called the development “very dangerous”. Hagel said that US forces in the Pacific theater, including those based in Japan and South Korea, would also ignore China’s strictures.

The Chinese government-run Xinhua news agency published map co-ordinates for what it called the “East China sea air defense identification zone” covering most of the sea and the skies over the islands. It said China’s armed forces would take “defensive emergency measures” against aircraft that failed to identify themselves properly or follow its radio instructions.

Xinhua claimed the “air zone could contribute to regional peace and security by curbing the increasing rampancy of Japan’s right-wing forces, as well as the continuous and dangerous provocations of Japanese politicians, which even Washington should be vigilant against”.

The deal takes Iran’s HEU stockpile of about 400 pounds, and dilutes it down to zero. That would assume that Iran’s being honest and open about the totality of the HEU stockpile.

HEU isn’t weapons grade - it’s something less than weapons grade (which is 90% enriched+). HEU is anything over 20%.

Opening up the enrichment facilities to inspection and diluting the HEU would be significant developments and shouldn’t be underestimated. Again, it’s whether this is truly the totality of that stockpile that determines whether we’ve got a good deal.

Another sign that critics are overstating/overblowing the consequences to Israel? The Israeli stock market rose to new records today on the news of the deal. If this was truly a bad deal for Israel, the markets would have dropped. This tends to undercut the GOP and Likud line that this is a bad deal for Israel. People putting their money where their mouths are. They’re betting this is a deal that works out.

Again, it bears repeating that this is a deal that works in phases. We’re going to see whether Iran lives up to its obligations over time. If it does, we’ll get another agreement done within the next few months. If not, we’ll see a different kind of deal and sanctions reinstituted.

It would be in Iran’s interest to see the deal through since the sanctions would be lifted, and Iran could continue LEU enrichment for civilian purposes with tight monitoring. It also suggests that sanctions worked to the goal of bringing the Iranian regime to the table to work out a deal.

Is this deal perfect? Nope, but no one side gets everything it wants. It’s a deal that works on the possible - not the perfect. It’s the critics who complain that it isn’t perfect, even though perfect is impossible.

re: #16 Stanley Sea

That infographic is pretty good. It’s based on an ISIS estimate that with the 400+ pounds of HEU, it would take a few months to enrich that amount to weapons grade.

Diluting the 400 pounds would extend the time to weaponization. That too goes to the interim nature of this deal while a longer term deal is sorted out.

Palin: Filibuster reform a conspiracy to stop talk of big government at Thanksgiving dinner

Fox News contributor Sarah Palin suggested on Sunday that Senate Democrats had reformed filibuster rules so that a only simply majority is needed for most presidential nominations as a conspiracy to stop people from talking about failed government during Thanksgiving dinner.

In an interview on Fox News, host Chris Wallace pointed out to Palin that President Barack Obama had faced more than twice the filibusters on presidential nominees than had President George W. Bush.

“Doesn’t any president — Republican or Democrat — have the right to be able to name his team unless a nominee is just wildly outside the mainstream?” Wallace asked.

Palin insisted that the president had a lot of “pals” who were “wildly outside the mainstream” and wanted to help him “usher in an agenda to transform America.”

The process remains the same; the difference is in time. The Iranians have gotten a handle on the difficult task of dialing in their centrifuges. Once that was done, it’s a function of time to get to LEU, HEU, and ultimately weapons grade.

70 RealityBasedSteve  Sun, Nov 24, 2013 5:18:56pm

This is very much a case of not getting everything that was wanted, but it seems to be a step forward in finding a solution. I don’t begin to claim that I understand all the technical details involved, I do know that the enrichment cycle is almost logarithmic, that it’s more work getting from 3.5 to 20 percent than from 20 percent to 90. If, in fact, we get that 200kg of enriched Uranium reduced down that will be a significant step.

I’m holding out hope, but am enough of a realist to know that this is just a beginning, not an end.

I saw a few people (maybe DF and VB) contemplating the allegations that a 60yo woman shot and killed two teens attempting the knockout game. I’m going to call BS on that story.

So far, the most credible story is a debunking by none other than Epoch Times.

Reasons to consider this BS?
No time, date, location of the incident. If this was a real incident, we’d know all those details precisely because of media interest in the “knockout” game with alleged attacks across the country including in the NYC metro area. We know the “name” of the victim, Beulah Montgomery, but not those of the two people killed.

Someone killing in self defense would likewise garner attention, but instead, it’s a story floating around on the fringe kook corner of the universe.

I’ve got to disagree on that point. Lower than 90% and you wouldn’t have enough fissile material to cause a sustained chain reaction. You’d have a very nasty dirty bomb, but not one that has the kind of output we associate with a nuclear weapon.

nuclearterror.org
fas.org

Check this link - it says that 20% is at the low end of weapons-ready enriched uranium, but can still be used in a crude, inefficient bomb.

nuclearweaponarchive.org

110 Charles Johnson  Sun, Nov 24, 2013 6:45:29pm

The Little Boy weapon dropped on Hiroshima used 80% enriched uranium.

The amount of material needed with only 20% enrichment would make the bomb so heavy that I don’t know if there could be an effective delivery vehicle.

Yes, it would need a lot of uranium to reach critical mass. Definitely not the preferred way to build one of these hellish devices - I’m just saying it is theoretically possible to do it.

re: #31 makeitstop

Here’s another ‘news’ story along the lines of the ‘disemboweled child molester story…

60 Year Old Woman Shoots and Kills 2 Teens After Being Punched

No byline, no city, no full name of shooter or her alleged victims. A search for other sources for the story brings up reliable news orgs like ‘Before It’s News’ and - big surprise here - Stormfront.

This is revenge porn for people who are scared out of their minds by ‘the Knockout game.’

re: #32 FemNaziBitch

YEAH, I asked about that the other day and DF said it was dubious.

The tip-off was that while, some versions of the ‘story’ had a name the shooter, not one had a location (which any credible crime story will have). Also there was the fact that right-wing sites one would expect to jump on this kind of thing, such as The Blaze, haven’t run it. Even Glenn Beck’s people know this one stinks.

Should note the SNP in Scotland is getting pissy that Scotland might get kicked off the Pound should Scotland leave next year (which is looking doubtful.)

Currency union row would be ‘bonkers’, says Hosie

I should also note the polling shows independence being 9 points behind. At best for the independenters.

Actually, someone take a look at the questions here. Because, for some reason, while the other pollsters are 13-27% against it, while Panelbase has consistantly been around 7-9.

Is the wording really that different in the questions. Panelbase seems to be so far off from everything else that I think they are doing something wrong.

Since the Edinburgh Agreement, agencies have adopted the following preamble and question when polling for voting intention:

TNS BMRB asks: “There will be a referendum on Scottish independence in the autumn of 2014. If this referendum were to be held tomorrow, how would you vote in response to the question: Should Scotland be an independent country?” or “There will be a referendum on Scottish independence on the 18 September 2014. How do you intend to vote?”

Angus Reid asks: “As you may know, a referendum will take place in Scotland in the autumn of 2014. The referendum question proposed by the Scottish Government reads as follows: ‘Should Scotland be an independent country?’ If this referendum were held today, how would you vote?”

YouGov asks: “If there was a referendum tomorrow on Scotland leaving the United Kingdom and becoming an Independent Country and this was the question, how would you vote? ‘Should Scotland be an independent country?’” or “‘If there was a referendum tomorrow on Scotland’s future and this was the question, how would you vote? Should Scotland be an independent country?’”

Panelbase asks: “Should Scotland be an indepdent country?” or “There will be a referendum on an independent Scotland on the 18th of September 2014. How do you intend to vote in response to the question: Should Scotland be an independent country?”

Ipsos MORI asks: “Should Scotland be an independent country?” (after asking respondents how they would vote if the referendum was held today)

However, should Spain stop being tools about the Referendum, it looks like the State of Catalonia will become independent.
