Mark Levin Dismisses Pay-to-Play Charge

Senate Conservatives Fund spends hundreds of thousands of dollars buying Levin’s book
Media • Views: 28,369

Conservative talk-radio host Mark Levin is defending himself against charges that he engaged in a quid-pro-quo transaction with the Senate Conservatives Fund, promoting the right-wing group after it spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on his book.

Since Sept. 10, SCF has spent $427,000 on copies of Levin’s “Liberty and Tyranny,” according to Federal Election Committee filings. Those books were given to donors who provided $25 or more to the group.

In that time, Levin has frequently promoted the SCF on his show and on his Facebook page. “Senate Conservatives Fund is dedicated to electing true conservatives to the Senate!” Levin wrote in one post. Levin did not disclose the SCF’s purchases to his listeners.

On Thursday, in response to a POLITICO report noting the SCF’s purchases, National Republican Senatorial Committee Communications Director Brad Dayspring cast suspicion on the relationship between Levin and the SCF. Establishment leaders have frequently criticized the pro-tea party group of targeting Senate Republicans.

“Fishy: Senate Conservatives Fund spent hundreds of thousands of donor dollars to make Mark Levin’s book a bestseller,” Dayspring wrote on Twitter.

This whiny, bitch-ass never, ever spoke of “soft tyranny” when Bush was starting an unnecessary war in Iraq, or expanding the role of the federal government when it came to domestic spying either. Just another hack afflicted with the worst case of Obama Derangement Syndrome among all the conservative commentariat. A total bore.

It has been clear that large buys by PACs and organizations like Newsmax are responsible for putting wingnut books on the best seller list for long time now. The most egregious example is probably SarahPAC making $64,000 in bulk purchases of Palin’s own book three years ago.

A bit off (this) topic…but within the evening theme to a degree.

A spot of XTC music…Let’s all whistle along to Generals and Majors

Youtube Video

Lyrics (not quite as sung)

Generals and Majors ah ah
they’re never too far
from battlefields so glorious
out in a world of their own
They’ll never come down
till once again victorious

Generals and Majors always
seem so unhappy ‘less they got a war

Generals and Majors ah ah
like never before are tired of being actionless.

Calling
Generals and Majors everywhere
Calling
your World War III is drawing near

Generals and Majors ah ah
They’re never too far
away from men who made the grade
out in a world of their own
They’ll never come down
until the battle’s lost or made

Generals and Majors ah ah
like never before, are tired of being in the shade.

From Left to Right they are an acrylic plastic, Maple and Pao Ferra (aka Bolivian Rosewood). Wood ones get 24 thin layers of thin super-glue, wet sanded through a 12000 mesh grit, then buffed out and waxed. Was going to do a red acrylic one with chrome too, but I got a bit impatient while I was turning it and cracked it. No biggie.

But we have some real dark nighttime videos that once we get them to the lab to study are sure to be proof.

Levin’s show is painful to listen to. While the content is the usual dreck, it is the delivery, that makes me instantly change the station. His show is basically: mutter along in a low deranged voice, then start screaming in a high pitched nasally whine that sounds like it has some helium attached.

Who wants to hear nonstop anger and screaming? Well, I guess his audience of poorly educated, angry white male christians do, but not me, his show is cartoons for maroons.

I just read through that cryptome Glenn Greenwald e-mail Q&A pdf. One interesting thing is he actually puts some general floor numbers to the scale of the Snowden stolen document trove. He’s usually extremely cagey about putting a concrete number out — I’d guess to protect Snowden from (richly deserved) accusations of unvetted, Manning-like, bulk document leaking.

Greenwald:

Contrary to the false claim repeatedly made, I am not the only person with the documents. From the very beginning, Laura Poitras has had her own separate full set - and still does - that she’s been working with from the start. Even though people weirdly like to pretend that she doesn’t exist in order to falsely claim that I have “exclusive control” over the documents, she’s an actual adult human being who exercises her own independent (and quite willful) autonomy and judgment over what documents will be reported and how. Even if I for some dark and secret reason wanted to hold back documents, I don’t have the power to do so, since Laura has and always has had her own full set with which she’s been working and reporting for many months.

But beyond Laura, there are multiple organizations with tens of thousands of Snowden documents - tens of thousands! That includes the New York Times, the Guardian, ProPublica, and Bart Gellman/The Washington Post. Do these conspiracy theorists believe that Pierre is somehow going to control all of them, too, and prevent them from publishing documents? Are they all also “holding back” documents for nefarious ends?

You’ll notice that people who cook up conspiracy theories about “holding back documents” always falsely pretend that I’m the only one with the documents because acknowledging the truth - that Laura has her own full set and that multiple media outlets around the world each have tens of thousands of different documents - by itself proves how deranged those theories are.

Finally, there are journalists beyond all of those people with whom we’ve worked who have had unrestricted access for long periods of time to the full archive of Snowden documents, including Ryan Gallagher. Have we somehow also manipulated all of them into joining our plot to hold back newsworthy documents and then lie about what’s in the archive?

It’s useful to know that ProPublica and the NYT have “tens of thousands of Snowden documents,” as we can then plug that ballpark figure into this older Greenwald statement:

buzzfeed.com

Only Laura and I have access to the full set of documents which Snowden provided to journalists.

As the Guardian reported, the New York Times and ProPublica have only the portion of the archive relating to GCHQ. That is a small subset of the documents.

[The Washington Post’s] Bart Gellman also has only a small subset of the documents, though the number is substantial and relate to NSA.

So the GCHQ files, a “small subset” of the overall document set, comes in at 10’s of thousands of documents.

This lines up nicely with what’s been previously reported about the stolen British files:

bbc.co.uk

Today we have learnt a little more about the electronic files seized from David Miranda - but a lot more about why the UK authorities are so concerned about it.

There are 58,000 documents, many marked “Secret” and “Top Secret”.

independent.co.uk

Information about the project was contained in 50,000 GCHQ documents that Mr Snowden downloaded during 2012. Many of them came from an internal Wikipedia-style information site called GC-Wiki. Unlike the public Wikipedia, GCHQ’s wiki was generally classified Top Secret or above.

West Virginia chemical spill another black eye for ‘clean coal’

If you didn’t know what Crude MCHM was on Thursday, given the nine-county water crisis unfolding in West Virginia you probably know by now that it’s short for 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, a foaming agent that is used to clean coal. The industrial chemical has many other uses, but given its use by the coal industry now is a good time to ask what exactly is meant by “clean coal.”

And note he makes no effort to break down that 92 million Americans, as if the idea that they’ve all given up looking is because they’re fat and happy on unemployment checks, and not because millions are too old to start at the bottom rung of the ladder again, or can’t get their application looked at because they’ve been out of work over 6 months, or because the kind of job they worked for years/decades no longer exists.

I really wish the man and other wingnuts of the same mindset would just say aloud that they think the way to handle millions of unemployed Americans is to starve them into accepting the same slave wages paid to people in China and India.

I don’t know if you - or many people who don’t follow such matters - noticed, but lately, Louis Farrakhan has been quite chummy with Scientology over the last few years.

splcenter.org

Certainly an example of “odd bedfellows” in my book. The article from the SPLC cites an article from ‘The Final Call’ (the NOI’s newspaper) of May 31 2011. There is an article from the Feb. 28 2013 edition of ‘TFC’ - which I’m not going to link to, but you can find it on the web - headlined “Nation of Islam Auditors graduation held for third Saviours’ Day in a row” which pretty clearly illustrates the link between the NOI and the COS.

The NOI and the COS are the last two groups I ever imagined working together.

LOLOL.

Farrakhan has made it quite explicit; he refers to L. Ron Hubbard as “Brother L. Ron Hubbard”. No joke.

I suppose there is some peculiar logic to it; both the NOI and COS are syncretic new religious movements, and to an extent, both could be ostensibly classified under the rubric of “UFO Religions”.

EDIT: I won’t post it here, but if you go to YouTube and type “Farrakhan sells out to David Miscavige” into the searchbar, you’ll find a nine-minute video of Farrakhan praising Hubbard and Scientology.

Black rhino hunting permit auctioned for $350,000

The rationale:

“Ben Carter, executive director of the Safari Club, has defended the auction. He said all money raised will go toward protecting the species. He also said the rhino that the winner will be allowed to hunt is old, male and nonbreeding — and that the animal was likely to be targeted for removal anyway because it was becoming aggressive and threatening other wildlife.”

Hunting clubs don’t “protect” species, they kill them for sport.

Sheesh! I will let them hunt all the feral hogs they want for, say, $3500 each. Just one percent of the cost, the mighty Nimrods don’t have to travel so far to get them in their sights, and the wily beast is a good deal more sporting a challenge than the decrepit old rhino who would be the only legal target for this hunt. Also you can eat it if you are so inclined, while rhino is said to make poor fare unless you’re a hyena.

I had a unique experience with a couple of fellows from the NOI back in the late 1980s up near Portland, OR. I was waiting for a bus, and there were two well-dressed gents, and I instantly recognized the NOI lapel pins they were wearing, so I struck up a conversation with them. They were quite affable, and it ended with them giving me a ticket to an upcoming NOI event in Portland.

This is why your first filter and oil change is important on all your vehicles:

What you see is some of the metal bits from the manufacturing process, as well as metal shavings from normal wear and tear collecting on the magnetic ring.

This is my tractor’s hydraulic filter from its transmission and oil return (suction) line. This was done at its 100 hour service.

Good morning!

Wha’ happened?

Started with another medical emergency: My wife’s aunt, down in Arizona, got the flu and, after that’d chewed up her immune system, got valley fever. We went down to help out at her house (animals and suchlike) and while walking along the road we think I jumped to the verge to avoid a car and fell into a ditch and head my head. Or I might have actually been hit by a car or a thrown object. Anyway, however it happened, I got concussed, and since I’m an ex-boxer I’ve probably had a bunch of smaller concussions before. This one was a doozy.

re: #68 Uncle Obdicut

Are you suffering from one?

As a teen I was with a group of guys from our model rocket club and we were all planning on attending the National Championships at The Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. We were at this one kids house and he had some Rupp Torque Converter (shiftless) Mini Bikes. We hopped on them and went flying across this field behind his house.

I hit a little rut and the freakin’ handle bars were loose and they went straight down to the front tire launching me head first into the ground where the bike and I rolled and tumbled for some distance. Everyone laughed. I guess I did not. I have zero recall of the whole thing, I’m going on what everyone told me. I guess as they laughed they asked me how I was and I was talking some strange stuff. That’s when they realized I wasn’t right, called my parents and took me to the local hospital where we all met up with the family doctor who happened to be there. Sure thing concussed, big time.

I think it was when my father was pulling into our driveway is when I started to come around.

That was bad enough…but it wasn’t until years and years later as an auto racing fan that I learned the nasty truth about basal skull fracture and other fatal neck injuries when it really hit me I could well have broken my neck. It still all gives me big chills 40+ years later. There go I but for the grace of god…

Oh, and don’t ask me to learn to ride a motorcycle. Love them as machines…no nerve to ride one. Going across some grass at about 25-30 and rolling and tumbling will do that to you. Well, me anyway.

Wow. I hope like others are saying you got checked out. I remember having a gigantic headache of all headaches for a few hours after I got home from the hospital. They gave me some major painkillers that knocked me right out. That was all back in the early 70s and I don’t think they had the research on concussion/head injuries like they do now.

EDIT: Get thee to a clinic! Again…as an auto racing fan, I have fears about head injuries starting out mild and then getting worse. Ski accidents too. Too many bad things can happen…get thee to a clinic or emergency ward.

Yeah, I’m glad this is happening now and not previously. I’ve also been on painkillers (the non-blood-thinning kind) which really alter my mood and personality. It’s funny, like, I’ve been disliking the taste of coffee up until this morning, and while I was able to write coherent arguments and stuff about stuff, I would keep forgetting to call people and stuff.

Interesting article on Chris Chrisite. Looks like everyone that did not endorse him are looking back over the last few months to see if they too were screwed with by the Governor’s office. He sure has opened a can of worms. Now everyone is looking to see where those worms may have ended up.

N.J. mayors who did not endorse Chris Christie question whether they’ve also been targets

Just the first example in the article at NJ.com:

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said that after Hurricane Sandy, she applied to the state for a Hazard Mitigation Grant. In the spring, when Christie asked her to endorse him for re-election during a face-to-face meeting, Zimmer told the governor no.

“He was quite disappointed, but I wouldn’t say that he was angry,” she told WNYC.

When her request for grant funding came back, she said, Hoboken received $300,000 of the $100 million in grants requested — less than 1 percent.

“With 20/20 hindsight, in the context we’re in right now, we can always look back and say, ‘Okay, was it retribution?’” Zimmer told the station. “I think probably all mayors are reflecting right now and thinking about it, but I really hope that’s not the case.”

That’s really all it boils down to in the establishment’s eyes, that Christie is their guy in ‘16, their best chance at winning back the White House, and so they have to do whatever they can to keep him viable.

About ERNS Data

ERNS was last updated on RTK NET with a copy updated as of January 16, 2013, and includes incidents from 1982 through 2012.

The ERNS (Emergency Response Notification System) database is a database of incidents reported to the National Response Center. I intentionally mixed bleach and ammonia once because I was a big idiot and I wanted to clean the sink.

That reminds me of a time when I worked as the do-everything-boy at a local motel after school and during weekends and through one summer junior and senior year in high school.

One real hot August day I went to the lower rear ‘maids room’ where bedding, cleaning materials, washers, sinks, etc, were located. I opened the door and there was an acrid odor/gas cloud that immediately burned the eyes and gagged me. I yell for the hotel owner who was out in the parking lot doing some sweeping. He ran over and when he went into the room he found a maid on the floor passed out. She had taken and poured a bunch of industrial-grade ammonia into a 5 gal pail and hit it with real hot water. Boom…down she goes. Luckily she was okay. She had never worked with anything but household ammonia…and even that can be tricky in a hot and confined area.

Oh dear.

On August 1, 2007, Hahn was arrested in Clinton Township, Michigan for larceny, in relation to a matter involving several smoke detectors, allegedly removed from the halls of his apartment building. His intention was to obtain americium, a radioactive substance, from the detectors. In his mug shot, his face is covered with sores which investigators claim are possibly from exposure to radioactive materials.[7] During a Circuit Court hearing, Hahn pleaded guilty to attempted larceny of a building. The court’s online docket said prosecutors recommended that he be sentenced to time served and enter an inpatient treatment facility. Under terms of the plea, the original charge of larceny of a building would be dismissed at sentencing, scheduled for October 4.[8] He was sentenced to 90 days in jail for attempted larceny. Court records stated that his sentence would be delayed by six months while Hahn underwent medical treatment.[9]

Police: Pa. Man Stole Hand Sanitizer To Make Cocktails

Police have charged a man with stealing 12 bottles of hand sanitizer from a central Pennsylvania hospital, so he could mix it with orange juice and drink it for the alcohol it contained.
The Altoona Mirror reports 51-year-old Lee Ammerman has been mailed a summons requiring him to surrender Feb. 5 on charges of theft and receiving stolen property.
Police say an employee at UPMC Altoona hospital saw Ammerman steal a bottle of sanitizer by hiding it in an arm sling he was wearing in October.

Um, shit. Was wondering where you were.

Since valley fever is fungal, it’ll take awhile to clear her but there’s no reason not to be confident about a good prognosis. She’s been discharged and is at home so she won’t pick up resistant MRSA or anything.

My most recent boss/company owner I worked for has a son (45 or so yr old) who needed a hip replacement. These folks are rich as all get out so best doctors, best hospitals, the whole thing. He goes in for a replacement, a week later he is back in the hospital due to MRSA. 6 months or so of strong antibiotics and he’s got to go back in to get the replacement replaced because the original replacement may have been the cause of, or at least holding the MRSA. 1 year later he is back to walking, but now has to wear special shoes because he now has one leg a tad bit shorter than the other.

Big time. I am wearing a back brace and an ace bandage on ribs from going down a few days ago on ice during the big freeze. Hands on pockets of coat, one foot slips during step, try catch with other foot, it slips out from under too, down directly on my back, with hands still in coat pockets. Actually felt ok the next day until later in the evening. The last few days it has been terrible. Today it is not too bad. Prob a rib bruise or even a fracture (I have fractured ribs before). Dark, the cash wouldn’t be given to pharma companies, it’d be given to government labs and universities, which is where the research into novel antibiotics takes place. Pharma companies exploit the basic science discoveries, normally to fiddle around with existing antibiotics; there’s about a bazillion variations on penicillin, for example. Selman Waksman discovered more than twenty antibiotics and created systems for finding novel antibiotics—he was at Rutgers.

This, again, is the way it’s ‘supposed’ to work: government and non-profit universities fund the really hard stuff, the basic science which discovers the novel stuff, and then pharma companies, who don’t need funding because they exploit the findings of the public researchers, tinker with the discoveries to create more targeted antibiotics, play around with drug delivery mechanisms, etc.

However, since the GOP has been leading an anti-science charge for decades now, since the GOP even discounts the basic science of evolution which is at the heart of antibiotic research, and since the GOP is adamantly against increasing government spending, it is very unlikely that the US scientific community will get the funding it needs any time soon, and we’ll all suffer because of it.

Not enough + up-dings for that one. So here is acknowledgement for a few more!

I might add that incidentally this really hurts the pharma companies, too; as their older antibiotics cease working, they have to do more and more research to alter them to come up with something new— there has been almost no movement on this at all in decades because of the enormous cost. A truly novel antibiotic would be worth far more to the pharma companies than another variation on penicillin.

Government scientific research is one of the best investments a society can make, and it’s always sadly amusing to see the GOP attack science as hard and as often as they do. Science is economic power, it’s military power, it’s absolutely necessary for the continuation of capitalism, and the GOP takes every chance they can to attack it.

I have a technical question about the bolded part. Why do you use superglue and not some other kind of wood finish, like polyurethane or varnish? I haven’t worked with wood in ages, so this kind of finishing is new to me. Thanks!

Oh, I really like your work!

Reason for super glue is that you can do it in just a few minutes start to finish. It’s also super durable, most other products aren’t as tough. Took me a year to get my technique down, but it’s my favorite for thing like these. Bowls or larger items I still use traditional poly or something like danish oil.

I tried to get solar going at a fairly big place. Had to agree to leave company names and locations out of it, But I did Page the tale and back it up with an article from the LA Times that reflects my experience. Solar, enjoy the warmth and the power but be careful or you could get burned.

He “took responsibility” after months of shirking it while accusing the investigators of partisan politics, when one of his inner circle got caught red-handed, and spent the entire press conference they’re applauding foisting said responsibility on his staff and repeatedly reminding everyone who listened that he’s the real “victim” because his staff lied to him!

And of course he fired Kelly, he had no other choice politically. She went under the bus so fast, she never saw it coming.

Yeah, they provided graphs of the likely decline over time. Replacing panels would be a big part of long term costs. Presumably that tech will continue to advance. Solar is tabled for now, as conditions improve I’ll re propose it.

Next up- Might wind power be doable at that location? I’ll be able to report on that in a few months.

There’s just no comparison whatsoever between Benghazi or the IRS non-troversies and what has gone on in NJ. The White House DID NOT order the consulate to be attacked, but Christie’s Deputy Chief of Staff DID order lanes on the GWB to be closed for four straight days.

And there was no IRS “scandal,” much as the GOP keeps insisting there was, because the accusations of TP groups being specifically targeted turned out to be bunk served up by Issa by knowingly setting parameters of the IG’s investigation to reach the conclusion he wanted.

Uncle Obdi is right, everything is chemicals. I think the regs from Prop 65 here include all the metals save platinum and gold, which almost can not be forced into a hazardous form, short of making the worlds most expensive sword or knife.

Just pondering how California regulates (sometimes to ridiculous excess) and yet keeps us (mostly) off the hook for big industrial disasters. By excess I really will not ever be convinced the haz material signs in every paved parking lot is improving anyones safety one iota.

OTOH I am quite happy to deal with the more sensible statutes that regulate acid and metal fume waste at work. Once you build in good gear and good habits it’s not terribly costly.

West Virginia chemical spill another black eye for ‘clean coal’

This is a friend’s (PhD in environment science) comments re the WVA toxic spill:

[WVA sued the EPA & won in 2012 to remove regulations re toxic chemicals]

“The per gallon/pound fine you would get if you spilled/dumped the chemical would sink many companies…so when they spill thousands of gallons if crap they get a basic slap on the butt…it is funky math.”

“There is no such thing as clean energy. Windmills kill bats and birds - and have a development footprint as do solar panels. Nuclear has a smaller (in size) waste management footprint than coal…so long as you don’t look real hard for all those pesky radioactive isotopes that tend to just kind of wonder off all by themselves…the oil footprint needs to include all the grave sites of all the men and women who have died in wars defending the Middle East’s ability to sell the US oil…it is all relative risk….coal is nasty”

Candlestick makers of course. /

Greenwald’s once again letting everyone know he’s the arbiter of what’s good/evil, right and wrong.

Except he couldn’t be more hopelessly wrong here.

If you’re a person entrusted with your country’s defense, and you face an intractable enemy where their rhetoric includes throwing you into the sea at every opportunity (and launched wars to do same, including on the most sacred and important holiday in Judaism in the hopes of catching the Israeli government off guard), then yeah, you’re going to do some things that may be unsavory.

It’s not like Israel’s enemies followed laws of war (I must have missed Greenwald’s denunciations of suicide bombers, rocket wars, kidnappings, and other methods that target Israeli civilian areas). Ever.

Sharon’s involvement in Lebanon is well documented, and he was indirectly held responsible for the massacres there - by groups that weren’t Israelis (they were Phalangists). But he was responsible, and the Israelis pushed him out of military service and the limelight for more than a decade.

I never saw Palestinians push Arafat out of the way when he was instigating the Intifada. Or Haniyeh do likewise when Hamas was carrying out its terror campaigns. Nope. Not pushed out. Lauded by fellow Palestinians, or castigated that they weren’t doing enough damage to Israelis and running up the Israeli body count.

Reason for super glue is that you can do it in just a few minutes start to finish. It’s also super durable, most other products aren’t as tough. Took me a year to get my technique down, but it’s my favorite for thing like these. Bowls or larger items I still use traditional poly or something like danish oil.

RBS

Thanks! I’d never thought of using superglue as a finish before.
