The part of me that is glad to see a racist and misogynist get his comeuppance, is tempered by the part of me that realizes this jackass will still make millions of dollars a year from the team.

2 b.d.  Apr 29, 2014 11:13:57am

Me: Hey boss. I would like an indefinite suspension, with pay, from my $50 million dollar a year job so I can f*ck around a bit.

Boss: I’m afraid I’m going to have to fine you $5 million, I hope you’ve learned a valuable lesson.

3 Minor_L  Apr 29, 2014 11:14:08am

Well, obviously Silver and the NBA are the real racists here.

4 freetoken  Apr 29, 2014 11:14:13am

Copying myself from downstairs:

Carmax says it is ending LA Clippers sponsorship

Sterling is now bad for NBA business.

Previously, Sterling was good for NBA business.

I find it hard to believe that NBA owners don’t know each other well enough to get a good idea of what goes on in each team’s owner’s doings.

5 Charles Johnson  Apr 29, 2014 11:14:22am

$5 million is chump change to Donald Sterling.

Someone on Twitter said that it was comparable to a $102 fine on someone who makes the median income, which is a little under $40K/year.

10 Testy Toad T  Apr 29, 2014 11:15:06am

He’s been well-known to anyone paying attention as a disgusting racist dirtbag for many, many years. It’s pathetic that the NBA was able to turn a blind eye to this until Twitter exploded, but justice delayed is something something better late than never, I guess.

11 Amory Blaine  Apr 29, 2014 11:16:03am

I think some time and money spent on education would be prudent but meh. The NBA can throw a big party with the money.

Yep, and what’s worrisome is that they waited this long to act - which tells me it was about seeing effects on the NBA bottom line and not principle.

So how exactly is an owner “suspended”? He can’t go to the games?

14 Charles Johnson  Apr 29, 2014 11:16:39am

As far as I can tell, “suspending” an owner is basically a meaningless gesture. His income from the team remains unchanged.

Exactly, they waited to see if the outrage from fans and players would have fallout financially. Now that sponsors are pulling out, the NBA has to take action, if only to stem the bleeding.

20 goddamnedfrank  Apr 29, 2014 11:18:36am

So that’s like what, 1% or so of the team’s assessed value? And what exactly does it mean to be a suspended as an owner if he still technically owns the team? It’s not like he’s going to games anymore anyway.

re: #9 Minor_L

Someone on Twitter said that it was comparable to a $102 fine on someone who makes the median income, which is a little under $40K/year.

Except the average person actually feels that $102 dollar fine, it has an impact on their budget that has to be offset elsewhere. This guy with his enormous accumulated wealth can pay $5 million without it impacting his lifestyle at all.

As far as I can tell, “suspending” an owner is basically a meaningless gesture. His income from the team remains unchanged.

As I understand it, he can’t attend games and cannot contact anyone working for the team.

What exactly that would mean long-term is not clear to me (ultimately, he must still be able to fire the operations staff, right?), but he’s not getting any non-financial use out of the team. Whether that matters to him much isn’t clear to me. Presumably that disgusting old husk enjoys basketball, and that’s being taken from him.

I suspect the NBA found that they had no real avenue within their bylaws to punish him with anything other than suspension and fines.

But hey, people think they’re doing something about it now.

And really, free speech! These were just his private views, after all. There’s no reason this should impact the team, and people absolutely should still continue to spend their money on things that will benefit him directly, because I’m sure there’s a racist working as a janitor or something. Instead we’re just seeing Twitter mob rule and it’s sad to see the NBA bowing to the pressure of political correctness, although I can totally understand why they do so because they’re in the business to make money, not stand up for free speech.

The biggest breaking news that Silver revealed is that Sterling will not be attending playoff games in the interim.

9:08: p.m.: Silver says due process has to play out, and that he’s not yet ready to discuss sanctions for Donald Sterling. But he said they will move fast and Sterling has agreed not to attend the Clippers playoff game on Sunday.

For what little comfort there is, it’s a strike to his ego.

Digressing, what he did was wrong but NOT ILLEGAL. (Gah, I hate saying those words.) It is not illegal to be a racist. It is sometimes not illegal to make derogatory remarks based on race.

It’s illegal to make decisions that impact other’s lives (employment, places to live, provision of medical services, etc) based on race. As far as we know, however, that’s not in play here.

His racist behavior is in conflict with stated ideals, intents, and regulations of the NBA. And for that he can be punished in accordance with those same regulations. Thus the $2.5 million fine, thus the banning, which are the maximum allowed.

But let’s also keep in mind that owning a team isn’t really about the money. Yes, it makes money, but that’s not the big deal. The big deal is the ego: “I own a professional sports team.” It’s a bonfire of the vanities situation, and that will hurt him.

Not as much as most of us believe it should, but more than some are giving credence.

109 lawhawk  Apr 29, 2014 11:42:45am

As I surmised earlier, the NBA rules probably don’t let the league strip Sterling of ownership, but the lifetime ban is what they think could force him to sell.

It’s a similar, but not identical situation, as in MLB where they forced McCourt to sell the Dodgers, or for Schott to sell the Reds.

The fine is chump change for someone like Sterling. Even if the fine was $50 million (equal to the amount he bought the team for), it would be chump change. The team is likely to be valued at or near $1 billion (with a B). He’d make roughly $950 million on his investment before selling. ***

The punishment is that he’d never be part of the group of owners that runs the NBA - one of 30 team ownership groups. That’s select company, and that’s why some of these rich folks go into owning a team - because they can claim to be part of an elite club that few can ever do.

It’s a lifetime ban, with the intent to force a sale. No participation in any team activities. Barred from attending BoG meetings or league activities.

*** I’ve now seen different valuations for how much he paid for the team, and what the team might be worth. He appears to have paid $12.5 million, and the team is worth anywhere from $575 million to $1 billion.

I presume the BoG of the NBA have veto rights on who he sells the team to?

I also have expect legal action by Sterling. I guess it depends on how Al Davis-ish he is feeling.

That’s really not a cool idea, no matter how emotionally satisfying it would be.

I’m fine with consumers and companies using their ability to make decisions on where to spend their money in order to affect a change.

I’m not fine with using the political system to target one person.

The end result of him selling the Clippers is that he will no longer be able to say he’s a basketball team owner. Like kirkspencer said, it’s about ego. The money …eh, I’m not sure we could take away enough money for this guy to notice, really. But the loss of prestige? That’s where it’ll hurt.

To be clear, everything Sterling said it true. NBA attendance is down because the league has an image problem. The last thing he wanted was his side piece promoting the ghetto image that is hurting NBA ticket sales. (1) players are lazy tatted up thugs who flop all over the court and don’t play hard till the playoffs and (2) white yuppies don’t want to pay $400 to take their family to a game where they have to sit next to ghetto ass black and mexican trash, like it’s a Young Jeezy concert.

You hyper-PC white-guilt idiots can deny it all you want. Fact is if all black and mexicans boycotted the NBA attendance would immediately go *up*. Nobody wants to be surrounded by them, socialize with them and definitely not live near them.

I just re-read the article. I think Kareem was being more tongue-in-cheek about the mistress than TPM was giving him credit for.

I think his point was that it was kind of a sleazy trick, regardless of the racism angle. And I agree - after listening to it I felt like I needed a shower. And it may have been illegal.

But he certainly didn’t give Sterling a pass, and he was not trying to excuse Sterling with this point.

The comments in context only sounded worse, which is why even Hannity gave it up. And even if the initial comments were agreeable “in context,” the press conference and press interviews pretty much wiped away any deniability.

For the record, it will take the votes of 75% of NBA team owners to move forward with forcing Sterling to sell.

I don’t think Silver will have the slightest problem getting at least 3/4 on board No one wants to be seen as giving tacit approval to a racist. Cuban and the Knicks’ Jim Dolan are already on record saying they’ll vote to oust Sterling.

And as with everything else, this story comes with its own conspiracy theory. I belong to an NBA message board, and some are saying that this is all a setup to help Magic Johnson buy the team.

Magic Johnson denies he wants to buy Clippers

My, that was quick. Yahoo Sports reports that Magic’s group is still angling, as well as the erstwhile Mrs. Sterling (who I believe has a good chance to eventually acquire his stake)..

Despite his denial of ownership interest in the Clippers, Magic Johnson and potential investors spent part of Monday working to understand the avenues to which they could eventually make a deal to become Clippers owners, sources told Yahoo Sports. If the franchise becomes available, Johnson wants to be positioned to make a deal.

For now, Sterling’s estranged wife Shelly believes she can find a way to control the Clippers, but the NBA has no intentions of the team staying in the family’s hands. That’ll never be a compromise, because Silver and the owners understand the public tenor: The Sterling family must go.

Currently no one in the Sprint Cup Series.

I did work with one of NASCAR’s ‘development’ drivers though…Bill Lester. I think he had a few cup races but mostly he drove in the truck series and then in Daytona Prototypes which is also owned by NASCAR. Pretty decent driver. I think he is still wheeling in some GT class cars.

Of course, the current leader in the Formula 1 world driver championship is Lewis Hamilton, an English African American who also already won one drivers championship.

Interesting. I’d like to track down the source of the $5 million error, and the one that first said it was an “indefinite” suspension. If you watch Silver’s announcement, he clearly announces a lifetime suspension and $2.5 million.

As for the Nut News World piece, well, if you actually believe all those phony scandals, and the way they’re bouncing off his back, you do think he’s diabolical. Controls everything. Like the Jews!

The talk on ESPN is a lot closer to the truth today. Nobody liked him, and they decided to lower the boom.
