Daily Beast: Donald Trump’s Ex-Wife Said He “Violently Assaulted” Her

Whoa
Politics • Views: 81,182

Hold on to your hats, or whatever’s on top of your head, because tonight the Daily Beast published a possibly serious blow to Donald Trump’s political aspirations. It seems The Donald’s ex-wife once accused him of raping her.

Yep, really.

Not only does the current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination have a history of controversial remarks about sexual assault, but as it turns out, his ex-wife Ivana Trump once used “rape” to describe an incident between them in 1989. She later said she felt “violated” by the experience.

Michael Cohen, special counsel at The Trump Organization, defended his boss, saying, “You’re talking about the front-runner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as private individual who never raped anybody. And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse.”

Ivana Trump’s assertion of “rape” came in a deposition—part of the early ’90s divorce case between the Trumps, and revealed in the 1993 book, Lost Tycoon, The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump.

The book, by former Texas Monthly and Newsweek reporter Harry Hurt III, described a harrowing scene. After a painful scalp reduction surgery to remove a bald spot, Donald Trump confronted his then-wife, who had previously used the same plastic surgeon.

“Your fucking doctor has ruined me!” Trump cried.

What followed was a “violent assault,” according to Lost Tycoon. Donald held back Ivana’s arms and began to pull out fistfuls of hair from her own scalp, as if to mirror the pain he felt from his own operation. He tore off her clothes and unzipped his own pants.

When contacted by the Daily Beast, Trump’s lawyer launched into a rant you won’t believe:

“I will make sure that you and I meet one day while we’re in the courthouse. And I will take you for every penny you still don’t have. And I will come after your Daily Beast and everybody else that you possibly know,” Cohen said. “So I’m warning you, tread very fucking lightly, because what I’m going to do to you is going to be fucking disgusting. You understand me?”

“You write a story that has Mr. Trump’s name in it, with the word rape, and I’m going to mess your life up… for as long as you’re on this frickin’ planet… you’re going to have judgements against you, so much money, you’ll never know how to get out from underneath it,” he added.

Trump’s lawyer is amazingly wrong about marital rape, by the way.

This is the guy who’s currently the Republican front-runner for the 2016 presidential election, folks.

I posted this downstairs; I wouldn’t say I believe Ivana outright. However, the accusations are serious enough to merit investigation and reporting. The lawyer’s remarks are just icing on this particular cake of fail. Apparently Trump hires lackeys that reflect his own personality.

Trump’s personal life is a mess. He’s anything but the family values candidate that conservatives can get behind (not like the others or the talk radio nutters are in much better shape).

Whether this event actually occurred deserves an investigation and charges. If true.

I don’t know what to believe about it - except that all those involved should be interviewed and investigated.

But since we’re talking about family values, I’m seeing lots of tweets this evening about how fetal body parts are baby parts and how can you differentiate between those and something else - basically pushing a baby back to a zygote or clump of cells.

I have to admit, some of those arguments sound persuasive.

Right up until the point where you realize that the right wing cares more about the unborn fetus than it does the mother - OR - the baby once it is born. After birth, the baby (and the mother) are left to their own devices. The right wing wouldn’t care if that baby lacks health care (via insurance) or that the mom can’t get enough food for both, etc. The right wing is intent upon destroying the safety net that is supposed to help women get their babies to grow up to be productive members of society - undermining all their talk about being pro-life.

Because life doesn’t start and end at the womb.

Reading through stuff, I think I prefer the British Comics Line of Doctor Who.

The American one gets a little too dude-bro-ey.

They nerf Clara into being a bit of a damsel in distress, and follow the American rules in regards to romance, namely there should be none at all. It is still good though. But the British one is better.

Hell, maybe do one for this site.

And what is utterly bizarre, is that they must not pay attention to the show. She was essentially the Doctor in one episode. Missy says this:

The control freak and the man who can never be controlled. You’d go to hell if she asked, and she would. The phones ringing Doctor, don’t you hear that? Now that’s the sound of your chain being yanked. Heel Doctor!

How the American Comics get this into the normal tropes made it into normal American stuff, though she is able to talk her way out half of the time, and the Doctor refers to her as strong.

The fact that Trump’s lawyer’s go to defense was literally “You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law” is just astounding in how wrong it is in every conceivable analysis. That used to be my fondest hope, but I thought of a better one. Suppose the GOP nominates another “safe” candidate like ¡Heb! and lose. Trump doesn’t run 3rd party this time, but spends four years saying ever more and more deranged shit and the Teabagger rebellion (NOT CONSREVATIV ENUFF!!!) makes him the 2020 nominee….

She didn’t at the time. One of the things that people don’t understand about classified information is that individual pieces can be unclassified, but when they are put together, the group becomes classified. It’s the fact that they were being released under the FOIA that caused parts of them to need to be classified.

It was a weird thing in the Navy, when I was in the nuclear program. You could buy books on nuclear power that spelled out in detail exactly what was going on on the ship i was on, but I couldn’t actually talk about it.

OK, let’s have some fun. I’m going to post a story, and I ask folks hear to write accompanying lines that belong right under the headline:

Ted Nugent and Allen West visit scene of Lafayette shooting

Aging rocker and conservative activist Ted Nugent and former Florida Rep. and Lt. Col. Allen West visited the scene of a high-profile shooting in Lafayette on Saturday.

Before reporters and cameramen, the pair visited The Grand 16 theater to lay flowers at the scene where a gunman opened fire, killing two women and injuring nine others before taking his own life last week.

Nugent, who was in town for the Louisiana Outdoor Expo, said he was there just to show support for the victims.

“I think it’s inappropriate to even approach that subject (of guns),” he told reporters.. “I think it’s all about prayers for the victims and the families, showing support for the community. Instead of hardware, I think we should talk about heart-ware.”

My own accompanying line: Two nuts visit site of rotten nut’s rampage.

re: #73 The Vicious Babushka

I don’t like it, but yes, this issue won’t go away. And this is one point where the wingnut sharks justifiably see the blood.

I don’t know if Bill Clinton is a rapist, but he could be, and that’s bad. And no, dismissing Juanita Broaddrick’s testimony on some flimsy basis like “it’s all a political ploy” is hardly justice. Neither has she ever been discredited. At least five people confirmed that she told them about the alleged rape shortly after it allegedly occurred. This renders all the objections like “she later changed her testimony to say that nothing happened” mute (she credibly explained her reversal as not wanting further controversy “about the most horrific event of my life”; she knew that the political circus would ensue). Some of the details she gave (the hotel and the nursing conference) were confirmed, as well as the fact that Clinton could have been there (i.e. no apparent alibi that he was elsewhere, meaning her claim has at least a certain plausibility and is not immediately dismissible as a lie), and that’s pretty significant.

In the end it’s still he said/she said, and the case was too long ago to “adjudicate” it now, esp. without all the facts. But the shadow lingers.

This is all part of the baggage that Hillary is going to bring to the campaign…including Bill’s baggage, and the GOP is plans to go through all of it.

What else can they do? Explain why their nominee is the better candidate? Remind women, gays, minorities and employees what is in store for them under a GOP administration? Remind them what a great job the last GOP administration did for the economy and foreign policy?

Germany is wonderfully pleasant and balmy in April/May and again in Sep/Oct, July and August are either cool and showery or stiflingly hot and unpleasant.

I have little problem with the history: they have come to face their past and done a much better job of dealing with it and learning from it it than a number of other nations involved in WWII.

Some of it was being sold at a tent run by K&K Kollectibles…yeah, with a K. Klassy, right?

The GOP had all the money and all the motivation in the world to prove it.

Yes, but as we’ve seen rape cases can be almost impossible to prove, especially after the fact. Which is not to say Clinton did it, but rather to point out that all the money and motivation in the world might win an acquittal for rape, but they may not be enough to prove that a rape happened.

203
Nyet  Jul 28, 2015 • 4:26:50am

re: #202 Dark_Falcon

Indeed, disproving such accusations is often more easy than proving them. To disprove something (or at least to discredit it - there’s a difference) - as long as the accusation is detailed enough - you simply have to show that the verifiable details are not true.

E.g. Broaddrick claimed that it happened during a nursing conference at the Camelot hotel (though she didn’t remember the exact date).

So NBC went and checked - there was indeed such a conference at exactly this hotel and exactly at the time when Clinton was nearby and had time off schedule. That’s a pretty remarkable coincidence.

Now, had NBC established that Clinton was elsewhere at that time (which would be pretty probable on the false claim hypothesis - he could have been anywhere at the time), poof - accusation disproved.

On the other hand, while NBC’s finds support Broaddrick’s claim, they cannot prove it, because even assuming she did sleep with Clinton, we still wouldn’t know what happened between them - only they two would know that.

So that’s always a problem.

Fiat Chrysler to buy back 300,000 Ram trucks due to front end problems.

The trucks, which are the company’s top-selling vehicle, have defective steering parts that can cause drivers to lose control, and some previous repairs have been unsuccessful. So to get them off the roads, Fiat Chrysler agreed to the buyback, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Owners also have the option of getting them repaired, the agency said in documents released Sunday.

Also, Jeep didn’t learn from the Pinto

Also, owners of more than a million older Jeeps with vulnerable rear-mounted gas tanks will be able to trade in their vehicles for more than market value or be paid to get them repaired, the agency said in a statement. The Jeeps’ fuel tanks are behind the rear axle and have little to shield them in a rear crash.

It is a good start.

Heh, new rules at PZ’s place:

Blog is a lousy social medium; heck, social media are lousy social media. I think lately that I’ve been wrestling far too much with the problem of community on the web, and I have become disillusioned. That this particular community has been under siege by trolls and slimers and shit-stirrers hasn’t helped, either, or that there is far too much cliquishness of a painfully artificial sort.

I must also say that I find the wider community we tried to build at Freethoughtblogs is less a unified group than a disparate collection of loosely affiliated blogs that have found a convenient hosting service, which doesn’t help my mood much, either. We are all objects in space, drifting, occasionally bouncing off each other or tugging gently at each other’s masses. And that’s about it.

So I’m making changes. I’m not even going to try to foster this thing called ‘community’ any more — I will be a cold dark ember of a star, following my own whims, drifting alone, not trying to create a hospitable atmosphere. If you like what I write, read it; if you want to comment on it, write; but I won’t be providing any special places for social interaction. I’ll also be laying down some new commenting rules to break apart any cliques.

The monitor system is dissolved. Thank you for your assistance! Instead, there is a link on the sidebar where you can report any problems directly to me.

Otherwise, there aren’t going to be any major changes in what I do here. All I’m doing is making what has turned into an unrewarding chore go away.

You can argue about these changes below, but I’m afraid my mind is made up and I will not be reinstituting traditions that have become a source of constant trouble.

You mean beyond the reason all the other GOPers want it defunded and destroyed? To pander to the right wing extremists who don’t care that millions would lose access to affordable health care - increasing the costs to everyone else since ailments would have delayed diagnoses and for stuff like cancer, a cost effective mammogram would be replaced with a costly cancer treatment for those cancers missed.

Paul and the rest of the GOP are intent on destroying the health care system - as witnessed by their insistence on going after Obamacare and offering up no alternatives but vaporware and malware. They too have put Medicare and Medicaid in their sights, with no alternatives.

Same with SNAP and other safety net programs.

This isn’t compassionate conservativism. It’s destructive and corrosive for the sake of being destructive. It also goes against the core Constitutional obligation of Congress to provide for the general welfare. Seeking the eliminating health care to millions is a de facto violation.

For the religious right, this gives them an opportunity to rail about the evils of sexual liberation without having to talk about their own use of private sexual health care services. For libertarians, it’s an opportunity to claim that you are more deserving of contraception access than the poor, because you’re a Randian superhero and they are just shameful dependents who need to suffer for the lack of merit. Not with a group of like-minded true believers, your pastor’s constant preaching, the bible in your hand, that righteous feeling that makes you think you are godlike…and standing in front of bloody baby pictures and the LIFEBUS can you ever be wrong.

So, don’t get caught with a bear chasing you in your new Ford F-150 truck! (Bryan Fischer must have a Chevy.)

If we go by whether a particular medical procedure is gross or not, then most medical procedures would be banned under the gross factor.

Proctology, Urology, Gynecology, Dermatology, Oncology. Plastic Surgery (all of it). You name the discipline, they’re dealing with procedures and/or tests that are gross - involving blood, tissue, or bone.

There’s no escaping it in the medical field.

That an abortion involves blood and tissue isn’t a disqualifier. That doctors can talk casually about it isn’t out of the ordinary either. Doctors in the ER or in any hospital deal with all manner of badness casually. Nurses and doctors have to deal with all manner of bodily fluids and procedures that can make many people weak in the knees.

This is yet another appeal to emotion - not logic or fact - in order to seek the outlaw of abortion and destroying health care access to millions of women.

re: #317 ObserverArt

The aluminum is just as strong as steel, which is why they’re using it - to reduce the weight.

I’ve also just seen an article that developers have come up with a new version of steel that uses nanoparticles to give it strength and lightness comparable to aluminum without the difficulties relating to forming aluminum. They could actually use the existing steel presses, rather than put in new presses specific to aluminum.

That’d be a game changer since carmakers would benefit from using existing equipment rather than investing in new gear.

My last non-contractor job in IT was with a Beverley hills cosmetic surgery practice. One of the requirements for continued employment was that I get masked, gowned, and then stand where they told me to in the operating theater so that I could witness a maxillofacial procedure. The doctors who ran the place wanted to be sure that none of the help would do something indecorous should they catch a glimpse of the process of making someone look good.

Side Note: Don’t ask. I signed an NDC that allows them to weld me inside a leaky oil drum and drop it five miles out to sea if I reveal anything I saw or heard while in their employ.

Here is Columbus Dispatch article on guy petting cougars at Columbus Zoo.

Dispatch - Man charged, accused of jumping cougar exhibit at Columbus Zoo

- - CUT- -

Joshua M. Newell, 35, was charged late this afternoon with criminal trespassing, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, by the Delaware County sheriff’s office.

Newell couldn’t be reached for comment.

It’s unclear when the video was taken, but Newell posted the video on YouTube on Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate whether Newell was alone when the video was taken.

In the video, Newell, while holding the camera, jumps a short wooden fence at the cougar exhibit and approaches a wire fence that separates him from the cougars. He pets two cougars through the fence, rubbing their ears and necks.

A release from the zoo said it’s fortunate that neither Newell nor the cougars was harmed.

- - CUT- -

In the comments this one stands out…

Throw the book at him for endangering those cats! Just wondering, if this fool human had gotten bit, would they euthanize the cougars to test them for rabies? That’s exactly what happened to our bears… Goodnight Bears
Baby and Buster are gone, but a bigger question remains: Do we care too much?

And the link is a sad story about Richmond VA having to put down two bears so they could be tested for rabies.

Here is part of that story…

But she apparently told a city health official a different story. She told the director of the Richmond City Department of Public Health on Feb. 23 that she “put herself and the boy over the first fence,” according to the city’s initial report on the incident. He reached his hand through the fence to pet the bear.

The bear bit the boy’s hand. The mother then told the health department director that the bear “realized he’d done something wrong and scampered away,” according to the initial report.

The mother took her son to Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was treated for a puncture wound and released. The necessary agencies were notified: the city’s Department of Public Health, the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and, finally, Maymont.

On Feb. 23, 14 people from all the above organizations discussed the matter and determined the only course of action was to test Maymont’s two black bears for rabies. The decision was hard, but “at the end, nobody said no,” says Maymont Executive Director Geoffrey Platt Jr.

The bears were killed by injection and tested. They were not rabid. They were buried in a landfill but later retrieved, cremated and buried with ceremony.

There’s one more basic cause that I need not mention, and that is that in general, men don’t give a damn. (Applause) That’s true. The average man that might say, I’m against the abuse of women and girls quietly accepts the privileged position that we occupy, and this is very similar to what I knew when I was a child, when separate but equal had existed. Racial discrimination, legally, had existed for 100 years, from 1865 at the end of the War Between the States, the Civil War, all the way up to the 1960s, when Lyndon Johnson got the bills passed for equal rights. But during that time, there were many white people that didn’t think that racial discrimination was okay, but they stayed quiet, because they enjoyed the privileges of better jobs, unique access to jury duty, better schools, and everything else, and that’s the same thing that exists today, because the average man really doesn’t care. Even though they say, “I’m against discrimination against girls and women,” they enjoy a privileged position. And it’s very difficult to get the majority of men who control the university system, the majority of men that control the military system, the majority of men that control the governments of the world, and the majority of men that control the great religions.

In short, it doesn’t bode well when everyone has guns - it increases the chances of getting shot or killed - whether you’re a bystander or the potential victim.

And these are just basic scenarios like a carjacking, the second an armed robbery in a convenience store, and the third a case of suspected larceny. If they were to do a theater scenario, the odds are that the participants would do even worse - which means even more victims.

I always thought calling the fetus a baby was like counting chickens before they are hatched.

There are so many things that can happen in utero that will cause the fetus not to be viable. Because of medical science, they are fewer and fewer (at least for those in developed countries).

Survival of the Fittest rules. The body will not birth a baby that will not survive.

Our local PD runs a citizens academy program. Part of the course is a go through cops’ own state-of-the-art shooting simulator. I was the only civilian in the class to get through it without killing any bystanders. Afterward, our instructor told us jokingly that if we were the cops we’d put ourselves out of a job by depopulating the town.

Granted, abortion can be a part of a genocide, but only if it’s forced. So can be a forced sterilization. It doesn’t mean that when a person sterilizes themselves voluntarily, they partake in a genocide.

I read a couple of years ago that the appeal of coffee might not be caffeine, but rather the warm mug. Psychologically, the warmth comforts us; the caffeine emerges as an added bonus. When I read the study, I was drinking a cup of coffee, the fingers of my left hand wrapped around my ceramic mug as I read the article on my laptop. Scroll with the right hand. Clutch my coffee with my left hand. My need for the sensation of warmth is the reason I despise travel mugs. Their cool exterior tricks me into believing my drink is also cool. I burn my tongue. The travel mug deceives me while the ceramic mug holds truth.

Having seen the movie and then read the book, I agree. There’s greater depth to the book, of course, but it’s not like they made anything brand new up. They did make some bits more, shall we say, spectacular.

One thing I found unsettling about the book - apart from the whole ‘Scott and Lacy Peterson turned inside out’ aspect - was the resentments that build up in a marriage, though obviously in the story they were carried much, much farther than they ever are in most marriages.

It’s not only women as property. There’s also the women as conquest aspect, where if a woman has been saving herself, and you’re the guy who gets her in bed, you must be a Real Man!

Conversely, of course, if you’re a man who doesn’t have any notches on his bedpost, you weren’t able to convince any women to ‘give themselves’ to you, so you’re not a Real Man.

The same Henry Hyde whose name is associated with the Hyde Amendment barring the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion unless the pregnancy arises from incest, rape, or to save the life of the mother. It is used to prevent funding from going to Planned Parenthood for abortion services.

The amendment is periodically revised by the anti-choice movement to further restrict funding and availability of abortion services. In the process, they further diminish access to health care for women.

It’s federal law that abortion is legal, but we see that the GOP wants to make it illegal.

It’s federal law that Obamacare exists, but the GOP wants to repeal it and replace it with vaporware.

It’s federal law that people cannot be denied care, but that puts the burden on emergency rooms - costing them far more than if the same procedures were done in clinics or urgent care or private facilities. It also means longer waiting times and reduced care for others when procedures are done in the ER that would be better done elsewhere.

And even with the federal law about care, people are routinely turfed. And people are left with hefty bills for going to the ER.

You miss the point about committee hearings. They are about the committee members hearing themselves speak and pontificate - not to get answers from the person they’ve called before them. One of the many ironies of libertarianism is that they would, if they could, be the greatest moochers of all time. They want a free ride on everything that’s been paid for by generations of taxpayers.

all rightwingers are divinely appointed authorities on the proper responsibilities of society

if it weren’t for them, we’d have to rely on outmoded methods such as elections and consensus which, like democracy, always lead to chaos and mob rule

You can’t talk to a Libertarian about actual history because all they think about is that novel that changed their life. I’m not talking about Lord of the Rings.

Government is not some alien force visited on us from outside. It is formed by our common consent, and it is the conscious arm of society.

We as a society do not feel that the poor, when sick or injured, should be denied treatment, so we require hospitals to take at least some steps.

We as a society do not feel that the poor should have to live on the street and starve, so we provide some minimal funds, make it possible for them to buy food, provide some minimal shelter.

We have the authority to do this, because we created the government, and we continue to recreate every election. We are thus bound by the laws it passes on our behalf.

I have not seen the movie or read the book, but I do know the basic plot.

Why is the ending horrible in your opinion?

I like movies that don’t end in an “and everyone lived happily ever after” style. Why? Because that isn’t the way life is all the time. And, sometimes an untidy ending sticks with the reader/viewer longer because it keeps making them think.

Art isn’t always pretty, nor should it be.

SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Jul 28, 2015 • 11:17:36am

re: #592 ObserverArt

I’m hip to that, but the way this ends, there actually isn’t an end. It feels like they ended the movie in the middle of the story.

re: #581 The Vicious Babushka

The book has an unhappy ending, but one that I think is consistent with the rest of the story. Mrs. FBW was quite emphatically upset by the ending, but in retrospect, I think it’s of a piece with the rest of the story and the ‘happy ending’ would be the easy way out.

And note that as written, Nick has a certain ambivalence, which Go picks up on, about Amy. And as the book points out, hate is not the opposite of love.

I don’t care about happy endings, sometimes the villain has to get away with the crime. I just feel like the movie ends before the story ends. That’s what I object to.

There are a number of interviews with the author where she discusses this, and the idea that the story doesn’t end when we stop being privy to it. She says she doesn’t see them living happily ever after, but feels that’s another story.

I guess, in the end, it’s supposed to leave you feeling somewhat anxious and unsatisfied. It does that. The movie in particular leaves you saying, “WHAT? She gets away with it?” Reminds me of The Princess Bride, when the Grandfather reveals that Westly doesn’t kill Humperdinck, that Humperdinck lives - “Jesus, Grandpa! Why did you read me this thing?!?”

We as a society do not feel that the poor should have to live on the street and starve, so we provide some minimal funds, make it possible for them to buy food, provide some minimal shelter.

For anyone who understands math, we don’t even do these things out of generosity, or concern for the poor and sick and injured. We do these things because sick people left to wander may be contagious with something we’re going to catch. Or they’ll die and decompose and that’ll get into the water supply. Food stamps and public housing are cheaper than the amount of bodyguards and cops and judges and prisons we’d need to deal with hordes of starving desperate homeless.

The fact that we can walk the streets mostly in safety, let our kids ride their bikes, buy something from a food cart that will be pleasant to eat while we walk, that we don’t have to live behind 12-foot walls topped with razor wire — those are just a nice bonus.

When you are dying and go to the emergency room, no they can’t. If you want to see a doctor to keep up with your overall well being and probably keep you out of the emergency room, forget it. The hospital will just have to recoup the money from patients with insurance, so the insurance will raise their rates to cover you (and the added expense for the patients that can’t pay). So they are still going to pay more, just not in taxes, and the person that needed the emergency care because their ailment had gone undetected too far dies. Hmmm, something wrong with that picture.
