Saturday Jam: Son Lux: NPR Tiny Desk Concert

With members of the US Marine Band

The video’s description tells the story behind this highly unusual Tiny Desk concert:

August 21, 2015 by ROBIN HILTON

Most of the bands that play the Tiny Desk strip down their sound to accommodate the limited space and unconventional acoustics of an office. But Son Lux chose to do the exact opposite. Normally a trio of guitar, drums and keys based out of New York, the band blew up its sound for this performance, adding off-duty, civilian horn players from the United States Marine Band.

In spite of the more elaborate production — and extra decibels — Son Lux still made the performance intimate, in part by peeling back the otherwise-complex layers of each song and drawing out the most essential elements, particularly frontman Ryan Lott’s voice. Known in part for his fragile falsetto, Lott belts out the vocals here like he’s delivering power ballads.

At the Tiny Desk, the group focused entirely on Son Lux’s latest album, Bones, opening with “You Don’t Know Me” and following with “Now I Want.” It closed with the gorgeous and moving “Your Day Will Come.” Throughout the performance, Lott intermittently conducts the group as it dissects simple four-four time signatures into ever smaller slices, intentionally landing on the off beats. It’s one of Son Lux’s trademark devices for live sets, and it helps keep the audience from getting too comfortable.

Bones was released earlier this summer on Glassnote. It’s Son Lux’s fourth full-length album. The band is currently on a European tour through the fall.

Charles, I wanted to tell you thanks for sharing the gem that is Live from Daryl’s House. I had never heard of it before you put up some video from it quite awhile ago. It’s one of the coolest music shows on TV.

It got me to watching it all the time now. Add then on Thursdays, Live with Jools Holland is on right after it and it is 2 hours of must see music teevee. And if you miss it, they are both repeated later.

It loaded here. The site has been having issues today. Timeouts with some MD…something error, but I haven’t got the message again to report it. Mostly it just takes ~30-90 seconds to load a page. Sometimes.

The internet seems to be mostly okay now — good thing, since I spent much of the day getting lost in London. Thank heavens for mapping apps.

I’m too tired to post much except: where our subways have “Exit” signs, the signs in the London Underground say “Way Out.”

That is all.

Mind the gap!

Indeed. You often need to step up or down (up to about eight inches, and whether up or down varies from station to station). Escalators run faster than the ones I’m used to, as well.

We had some problems connecting to the database server earlier, but it looks like it’s all ironed out now.

Another hot day but not as bad as yesterday. The humidity has gone down a bit and that helps.

Still, this is the time of year when we bake here in San Diego. Hopefully there will be no fires.

A quiet day outside, and on the news wires, relative to some days.

I sense that Trump is about to burn out. Not that he will disappear, just that he’s peaked. There is the “debate” in a couple of weeks and I expect him to still lead then and afterwards, if he doesn’t mess up. But I think he’s hit his ceiling. If that is true I wonder if he’ll turn up the rhetoric even more?

Sure, great idea. Let’s just abolish the entire NSA and study the Fourth Amendment instead. What could possibly go wrong?

Sooner or later somebody is going to notice that while he’s cornered the 27% of the 27%, that doesn’t convert into winning numbers in the General. (Don’t depend on the MSM for that, obviously).

At some point, the GOP apparat is going to do their best to take him down. Whether they’ll succeed or not remains to be seen, as is whether I want them to succeed or not.

After the contest deadline, our Rand Paul committee will meet to judge the top 10 bumper sticker designs. From these 10 designs we will turn the vote over to the public to choose which design is best. From this public vote, the top two designs will be featured designs in the official campaign store. The designers from the top 2 bumper stickers will both receive 6 free bumper stickers showcasing their design. The overall winner will also receive a bumper sticker with their winning design signed by Rand Paul himself!

Read this shit….the CHIEF said she ain’t playing no games. Yes SHE. Then one of the women cut his ass…

“We have decided that your word is worth nothing. The conversation is over. We, the Mebengôre Kayapó people have decided that we do not want a single penny of your dirty money. We do not accept Belo Monte or any other dam on the Xingu. Our river does not have a price, our fish that we eat does not have a price, and the happiness of our grandchildren does not have a price. We will never stop fighting: In Altamira, in Brasilia, or in the Supreme Court. The Xingu is our home and you are not welcome here.”
