Active Shooter Reported at Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood Office, Right Wing Twitter Applauds

US News • Views: 83,326

The Denver Post reports that a police officer has been injured in an active shooter situation at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs.

At least one police officer has been injured in an ongoing active shooter situation at a Colorado Springs branch of Planned Parenthood Friday afternoon.

Lt. Catherine Buckley, a Colorado Springs police spokeswoman, said she was still trying to confirm other details in the fluid situation.

“We still have a gunman that is out there,” she said.

The city’s fire department tweeted about the situation about 11:45 a.m. The branch is located at 3480 Centennial Blvd., just east of the Garden of the Gods.

“The area is NOT secure,” police said in a tweet.

We don’t know much yet, but of course after all the crazed incitement against Planned Parenthood recently it’s likely this is a terrorist attack. Right wingers on Twitter are already condoning it, which isn’t surprising.

Freepers are figuring it’s either a false flag incident, or doesn’t matter because of all the babbies killed by PP.

Suspect in #PlannedParenthood shooting is a white male in his 40’s.

So it was the cops that were targeted and not PP. The lib media will ignore that little detail though.

Also theorizing it’s a robbery gone bad. Apparently there is a bank down the street. Why someone would run over to PP and start shooting escapes me.

Let me try again in this new thread:

I wonder how the wingnuts would react if (God forbid) it was a Muslim was shooting up the Planned Parenthood clinic. Cheer or boo? The cognitive dissonance would probably fry (what’s left of) their brains.

Never mind the women there for birth control, well care visits and other health needs. Sometimes, if you mention it to the doctor or staff while you’re there, they’ll take a look at your kids or at that earache that’s bugging you and give you a prescription for antibiotics.

This is only going to escalate. These assholes have been allowed to do this shit for decades now, and our elected officials have enabled them by passing laws as well as jut plain grandstanding for points. All these assholes have blood on their hands. All. Of. Them.

Left-Media shortcuts: Active shooter near Planned Parenthood = Christian terrorists. Killer yells “Allah u Akbar!” = workplace violence.

Kind of sick of that dumb-assed meme, current since the Ft. Hood shootings. An employee shot at work is listed as a victim of workplace violence in Dept of Labor statistics. Always has been, because THAT’S THE CATEGORY. Any PP employee hurt today will be recorded that way.

We don’t have to call for pp clinics to be armed. Virtually all of them have armed security already, especially in fundy-infested areas like the Springs. That’s probably how the cops were shot: They were posted there and the kook caught them by surprise and targeted them first.

Apart from the fact that decoding the minds of these people is ultimately futile, since they occupy a mental space where logic itself is tortured into Escherian forms, what is the real animus against PP?

Aren’t all the women who get abortions just unfuckable glasses-wearing atheist liburls anyway? Doesn’t abortion mean LESS LIBURL BEBBIES?

Doesn’t it mean LESS POORS? And LESS BROWNS?

Freepers are confused. News reports talked about shooter “near” PP and they convinced themselves it was unrelated and just the liberal media trying to drag PP into it. Now they’re reporting events in PP. Cognitive dissonance ensues.

The right isn’t pro life. It’s pro birth. They couldn’t care what happens the moment the fetus is born. They don’t care what happens as the infant grows up. They don’t care what happens with the toddler’s education or health.

And they certainly don’t care what happens past that.

This all rings loud every time they spout off in glee with the shootings, terrorism, and attacks against PP and the staff/doctors who work there.

These people simply don’t care about human life. They want the fetus to be born alive. What happens thereafter? They don’t care.

It’s sick, and it’s only getting worse with the exhortations by right wing politicians who feed this with their own extreme statements.

As an old lefty radio host used to say, “they love the fetus, hate the child”. If they gave a damn, not one kid would be languishing in the foster care system. Not one school would be underfunded. re: #161 Great White Snark

I’m discussing this online with friends. The average PP, because of incidents like this, tends to be a very tight, very secure operation. Usually you have to be buzzed in. If the guy was just interested in taking people out, he would go to the King Sooper’s 3/10th of a mile south of the PP and mow ‘em down. Also, if you look at the location (3480 Centennial Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO), you’ll see the PP is a standalone building behind a two-story medical office building.

I would find it highly coincidental that a motivated shooter would “accidentally” end up in a PP, not with a big office building next door and a supermarket just across a field.

Mixed. For example the link at the Gazette said at but headline near. If it started elsewhere and rolled into PP that would likely be coincidence not abortion terror. Good practices for coping with an
active shooter situation

• Be aware of your environment and any
possible dangers
• Take note of the two nearest exits in any
facility you visit
• If you are in an office, stay there and
secure the door
• If you are in a hallway, get into a room
and secure the door
• As a last resort, attempt to take the active
shooter down. When the shooter is at
close range and you cannot flee, your
chance of survival is much greater if you
try to incapacitate him/her.

We had a training at work for an active shooter situation. We were told to do the following, in the order from preferred to not preferred:

1) Get out.
2) Shelter in place or get into a hiding place.
3) Confront the shooter.

It was emphasized over and over again that #1 was the preferred choice.

If there was an active shooter in my building, getting to the exit would mean getting out on the mezzanine. I’d go and hide in the server room behind the server rack.

No, they don’t.
Nor do they care.

In their minds, any woman who would visit a PP clinic is either there to abort her baby or is paying for services with money that will allow PP to continue aborting babies. After all, if they didn’t support aborting babies, they’d go to a “pro-life” clinic.

207
jaunte  Nov 27, 2015 • 2:35:02pm

Security concerns at the clinic were high enough that the clinic had a “security room” with a supply of bulletproof vests, but, according to an officer on the scanner, some of the vests are still in the room, and one may have been worn by the gunman.

Um, sorry that’s just not as common as one might think. Sure it’s out there loud given the internet and all. Just speaking from my own long experience in shooting and running ranges here in California.

Maybe not, but a guy who shows up at an active shooter scene armed to the teeth and asking to “help” has issues. Big ones. And the scary part is that it’s damned near impossible to tell the lunatics apart from the responsible people until they start shooting. Our gun laws are NOT working.

Pro-life clinics don’t provide medical care. They are fronts for adoption services, I.e. babies for profit.

It’s like I said earlier, most of these people have never once seen the inside of any clinic and they assume that it’s row upon row of beds with doctors doing round the clock abortions. Because they’ve been fed a diet of bullshit and fear based on some extremist’s fever dreams. They have no clue about basic human biology, I’m not sure some of them even get how babies are made and born. If they did, they wouldn’t have fallen for the whole “baby parts for sale, getchyer baby parts here!!!” line of bullshit. They don’t understand birth control or how it works, and they have no idea why there is a whole branch of medicine and science devoted to women’s reproductive health. All they understand is fucking. And they’re probably not that skilled in that department either.

You and I know that, but the wingnuts have got their politicians telling them that all these “clinics” can provide the very same care that PP can. Remember the “list” of “alternatives,” which included everything from “men’s health clinics” to podiatrists as “alternatives” to PP, thus explaining why we could defund it without leaving thousands/millions of women without access to pre-natal care?

Conservative Christians endorse terrorism.

The problem is they’ve been doing the same thing for decades, not just about abortion, but about race, gender, sexuality, gay rights, religion, you fucking name it, and the world at large just keeps shrugging it off. It’s never terrorism when the right people do it, and it’s always terrorism when the wrong people do pretty much anything.

A note to conservative media and presidential candidates:

What the fuck did you expect would happen when you run around spouting lies that you know to be lies? What did you expect would happen to the woman’s health clinic that you accused of chopping up babies and selling on the black market so they could buy luxury cars? What did you expect when your presidential candidates lie and say they saw video of “fully formed” fetuses with their “hearts beating” being chopped up and sold for profit even though YOU KNEW it wasn’t true. What did you expect to happen when you refused to acknowledge your lies were lies even when you were confronted with the facts?

Really wish whoever is outside doing construction in the next neighborhood would not use a machine that sounds like gunshots right now. haha really? I live near Keller, and I always pass through HEB on the way to work near downtown Dallas every morning. HEB sucks.

You know, I actually live in a really nice little apartment in a really nice little quiet complex. The only problem is, it’s minimum ten miles from anything worth doing, and that’s added to the typical 20 miles travel between excitement anyway. My patch of HEB is a quiet zone that somehow hasn’t been ruined by Steady Systematic Decline yet. I’m between the airport and Grapevine so the nearby presence of the wealthy keeps things stable for the time being.

I just wish my place was somewhere else, that’s all.

Terrorist attacks are still a very low risk if you look at the numbers:

The CDC says that some 80,000 deaths each year are attributable to excessive alcohol use. So you’re 4,706 times more likely to drink yourself to death than die from terrorism.

Wikipedia notes that there were 32,367 automobile accidents in 2011, which means that you are 1,904 times more likely to die from a car accident than from a terrorist attack.globalresearch.ca

Australia and Indonesia are in a tiff.

Tensions have once again flared between Indonesia and Australia over asylum seeker policy after a boat that was pushed back from Christmas Island by the Royal Australian Navy ran out of fuel off Indonesia.

On Thursday evening - just hours before a two-day summit on refugees began in Jakarta with 14 countries participating including Australia - the boat carrying 16 asylum seekers and an Indonesian captain washed up at a beach in West Kupang.
An Australian Navy vessel approaches a suspected refugee boat off the coast of Christmas Island last week.

The whereabouts of the boat had been a mystery after it was towed out to sea when it came within 200 metres of Christmas Island last Friday.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry on Friday reiterated its opposition to Australia’s boat push-back policy, which it says puts lives at risk and is not a sustainable solution.

It’s not about if you, or anything/anyone else is a person or not, its about if we have the right to “kill” other people by denying them use of our organs if they would die without them.

It does not matter if it is a world famous violinist or a developing child, no one has a right to someone else’s organs.

There are three possible situations:

1. A fetus is never a person. It becomes a person upon birth.

2. A fetus is a person sometime before birth.

3. A baby is not a person for some time after birth.

Position 1 is untenable (if we are talking about actual personhood, not legal simplifications, which change from law to law): there is nothing going on in the brain of the fetus that suddenly makes it into a person during birth.

Positions 2 and 3 are both logically tenable, though they have different practical consequences in certain cases (e.g. punishment for infanticide).

The way I see it is this: It’s the choice of the mother.

I can go through all sorts of rationalization - the fetus can survive outside the womb, mother’s life at stake, etc., but in the end, it’s her choice. The one thing that’s pretty obvious is that no woman who carries a fetus very long after finding out about a pregnancy is going to just willy-nilly choose to end the pregnancy sometime later.

Although the question of (secular) personhood does have moral and legal consequences, one can discuss it separably, without going into the pro-choice/anti-abortion debate. In fact, it has very little bearing on the debate, because the numbers of late-term abortions, when it becomes relevant, is minuscule.

re: #377 Nyet

There are three possible situations:

1. A fetus is never a person. It becomes a person upon birth.

2. A fetus is a person sometime before birth.

3. A baby is not a person for some time after birth.

Position 1 is untenable (if we are talking about actual personhood, not legal simplifications, which change from law to law): there is nothing going on in the brain of the fetus that suddenly makes it into a person during birth.

Positions 2 and 3 are both logically tenable, though they have different practical consequences in certain cases (e.g. punishment for infanticide).

One practical thing that may be noted in is that — semantic precision notwithstanding — 99% of the people in the U.S. at this time who use the term ‘personhood’ in connection to an embryo or fetus are willing to put the rights of the unborn ‘person’ over the health, sanity, preferences and life of the pregnant woman.

Positions 2 and 3 are logically tenable, but the philosophical discussion is going to be emotionally charged, given the consequences.

Although the question of (secular) personhood does have moral and legal consequences, one can discuss it separably, without going into the pro-choice/anti-abortion debate. In fact, it has very little bearing on the debate, because the numbers of late-term abortiins, when it becomes relevant, is minuscule.

Except there’s not a whole lot of reason to discuss them otherwise. Say a mother miscarries right before our hypothetical date. Say another mother miscarries right after. Is the second mother required to have a proper funeral? If the first mother has one, is she being stupid? The concept is more about legal consequences than philosophical ones.

I don’t know if I agree with that. Birth is a transitional state for the fetus to a baby. The baby is caused to start breathing and typically starts crying. Don’t know if we should make that the ‘point’ where it becomes a person, but it’s a significant milestone.

But the reality is abortion at that late a stage happens so infrequently, and if so are usually caused by serious consequence, that it’s a somewhat specious argument.

Yes, I think you’re right about that. I know that PP was there for me for many years, providing health care and reproductive services to me when I didn’t have insurance. What relation does breathing and crying have to personhood? The human person is, first and foremost, its brain. Crying and breathing do not turn the baby brain into a person.

I’m not sure what frequency of late-term abortions has to do with alleged speciousness. The argument is valid or invalid regardless of statistics.

(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;
(B) appear to be intended—
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and

So are secular views

No comparison. Secular views 2 and 3 are based on observable facts about brain development. Science has shown that we are basically our brains. Hence the workable philosophical definition of a person has to be tied to neuroscience, one way or another.

Religious views are based on asserting the unobservable (“soul”) as factual.

as shown by the divergence in those secular views.

Except it’s a definitional, rather than a factual disagreement. The arbitrariness is in choosing which stage of brain development better corresponds to what we would describe as a person. The facts about the brain remain same for all sides.

It’s not “arbitrary” at all. At the end of an individual human life, there’s a very precise medical/legal criteria for when a “person” becomes “something that looks like a person but really isn’t.” That’s how we know when to unplug the machines, and when it’s okay to take the heart and transplant it into someone else.

So if personhood is all about the brain, then what happens in a case like this, where the child has manage to survive past his first year with basically only a brain stem—is he a person or not? Added emphasis is mine:

Doctors struggled to diagnose his condition. Finally, one year after he was born, neurologists at Boston Children’s Hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital, came up with a proper diagnosis: Microhydranencephaly

“Micro means small head, and hydran and cephaly, which we used for Jaxon, means that brain tissue is replaced with fluid,” said Dr. Heather Olson, a neurologist who evaluated Jaxon in August at Boston Children’s.

Olson explained that “most of his brain” never formed. He has a functioning brain stem which allows him to breathe on his own and his organs to function, but Olson said she doesn’t believe Jaxon will be able to talk or walk independently.

There is no prognosis. Doctors are surprised he has made it this far and any future development “depends on the medical complications,” Olson said.

Jaxon gets nutrition through a feeding tube. “Burping” him involves removing the excess fluid directly from his stomach. Even just bathing him requires both parents. […]

We are dealing with an objectively vague process - continuous development. With vague processes you can’t take a specific point and say “it was A before and B after”. Hence the notion of a time point at which a person appears doesn’t make sense, unless you’re using a weird def. of a person. Yet we can look from sufficiently big “distances” and see that A has, indeed, changed into B. Think “childhood” and “adulthood” - legal fictions aside, there is not a time quantum at which you suddenly become an adult. Just as well, when you have three grains of sand, it’s not a heap. But add grains one by one, and you will have a heap of sand. Yet there is not a single moment at which “many grains” turn into a “heap”.

Religious views are based on asserting the unobservable (“soul”) as factual.

Except it’s a definitional, rather than a factual disagreement. The arbitrariness is in choosing which stage of brain development better corresponds to what we would describe as a person. The facts about the brain remain same for all sides.

Except “personhood” is a legal term here for one who enjoys the full protection of the law. Granting personhood status to a fetus necessitates denying personhood rights of the woman whose body is in use. That is what is at issue.

re: #475 Nyet

I may be dense, but I’m not understanding what is being argued here. Is a fetus human? At what point does a fetus become an independent person? Is abortion moral at a particular point? The whole conversation seems to be moving around.

Most of it is irrelevant since the question isn’t whether a fetus is a person, but whether a person can claim the right to use someone else’s body.

Yep, the real question is whether or not the law should limit a woman’s right to control her body.

I’m angry about the terrorist who attacked PP.

I’m horrified and distressed at the RWNJs who feel the attack was somehow justified.

I’m saddened by the senseless death and injury from this incident and the pain the families of the victims are feeling.

I’m frightened by the nutjobs who may feel empowered by this attack.

I’m not in the mood for an intellectual discussion about personhood at this time. Seriously, folks?

That is a separate issue.

So this is just a random philosophical discussion? OK

By the way, the separate issue has already been answered in the US, and that answer is no. The military cannot order a soldier to donate blood to save another. If I injure you and the only way to save your life is for me to give my blood to transfuse into you, I can’t be forced to do it. Giving blood is minor compared to serving as total life support for a fetus. I’ve given blood and I’ve had kids. There is no comparison when it comes to what it takes to do the two.

I don’t understand the question. A cat is a unique individual of an entirely different species. Wasn’t the discussion about brain development in humans? If so, what happens when a human is born with only a brain stem?

re: #466 sagehen

It’s not “arbitrary” at all.

The definitional aspect is, actually. There are people who choose not to define newborns as persons, thinking they do not satisfy the conditions of what makes a person as we normally think about them. Peter Singer cones to mind:

In Practical Ethics, Singer argues in favour of abortion on the grounds that fetuses are neither rational nor self-aware, and can therefore hold no preferences. As a result, he argues that the preference of a mother to have an abortion automatically takes precedence. In sum, Singer argues that a fetus lacks personhood.
Similar to his argument for abortion, Singer argues that newborns lack the essential characteristics of personhood—“rationality, autonomy, and self-consciousness”[20]—and therefore “killing a newborn baby is never equivalent to killing a person, that is, a being who wants to go on living.”[21]

This choice of a definition of a person is to a certain extent arbitrary.

No goalposts are being moved at all. Do women have the right to bodily autonomy? Like the same right enjoyed by corpses whose organs cannot be used without express permission? If the answer to that is yes then questions about the legal definition of personhood of a fetus is just so much mental masturbation. Personhood cannot be granted to both.

If a human is born without any capacity to be an actual person, why insist on calling it an actual person? Sure, parents will still love him/her, and for social reasons I think their legal personhood should not be questioned, but no, I would not call a human without a brain an actual person.

Well, um, if there’s a polite way of phrasing this…
You’re discussing how to define the beginning of an individual human life, which you see as an issue separate from the abortion debate.
It sounds like Allegro is addressing the practical, painful and personal implications of the legal definition of ‘personhood’, in the immediate context of the abortion debate.

It doesn’t seem quite cricket to say she’s moving goalposts when she has not moved from her original position, i.e. the real-world implications of the legal definition of ‘personhood’ in U.S. politics. Likewise, it would be fair to define your argument more clearly from the start, i.e. you’re discussing a scientific/philosophical idea separately from any consideration of abortion. That would help, when we’re in the middle of a thread about the horrific real-world consequences of abortion politics.

I know, that’s not as much fun. I assumed you were discussing the scientific question, but it grated in the very emotional context.

Humbly and inoffensively yours, CT

I reacted to a statement that was not defined in merely legal terms, hence in this context reframing it as a legalistic matter is moving the goalposts.

And I made clear what I’m talking about throughout the discussion. I’m not responsible for others not reading from the start, going off on tangents or assuming what has not been said.
