Circular Firing Squad: GOP the Day After Nikki Haley Attacks Trump

Set hair on fire. Run in circles. Scream. Repeat. Coherent planning? Not so much.
Wingnuts • Views: 63,083

While I was overjoyed to see Obama talk to America like we were actual thinking, feeling adults capable of perceiving and recognizing reality (as opposed to screaming, threatening, mocking, spewing hate - this is known as foreshadowing, BTW) …

… the really compelling thing that happened last night was the GOP response by Nikki Haley. She actually said something the GOP did was less-than-perfect and holy. That the party was appealing to the worst in people, and needed to cut it out. That “some people” were bringing out ugliness and making it seem like a winning strategy.

Lots of mouth. Small brain-case. What is this atavistic species?

Basically, she was the mouthpiece for the Establishment’s attempt to kill the Trump cancer before it metastasizes further. There appears to have been a recognition that the Trump phenomenon is serious and is not going away on its own; that the GOP is going to need to rouse itself from its continuous loop of “Fox and Friends” re-runs and fondling of Reagan paraphernalia, and actually come up with Something New.

The reaction? Mixed. Over at Red State, there’s a post entitled “I will phone bank for Hillary if Trump is nominated.” tl;dr version is that the author has a Seekrit Plan that if there is to be an apocalyptic reckoning, let the Democrats take the blame.

in a situation where two devils are my only option, where I’m certain the outcome of 4 years will be bad for the country, where I’m positive the party responsible for nominating them will be held accountable and suffer the wrath of voters for years to come… I choose to let the other party take the hit.

I will not participate in destroying my own party’s brand by helping to elect a dangerous and untrustworthy person to office and declaring him a representative of my ideological beliefs.

The commenters are basically all over the map, either rending their clothes and wondering when a savior will appear to save them from Trumpenstein, or shitting all over the other commenters because they don’t support a real He-Man like Trump who will exterminate the brown people ‘cause reasons.

Meanwhile, over at Ace of Spade, the reaction is shorter - Annoying, and Predictable: Establishment Puts Nikki Haley Up to Attack Trump Rather Than Obama. tl;dr is basically “Look what you made us do! We only love Trump because you’re not paying enough attention to meeeeeeeEEEE!”

If you delve into the comments, you will see it all summed up in: “The GOPe? Fuck ‘em.” along with “Trump is the president in waiting. the sooner everyone adjusts to that the better it will be, for them.” Along with a lot of racist, misogynistic masturbation about how they’re going to “Take Over!!1!eleventy” when Trump wins and then cleanse the country… (i.e. “Hey Hiawatha, maybe point your arrows toward the Democrats once in a while. Wait, is Haley a casino Indian or a Slurpee Indian?”

And, just in case you really want to wallow in the fetid stench of RWNJs having a full-on hategasm, over at Breitbart, there’s “Republican Party Uses State of the Union Response to Attrack Donald Trump.

Yep. Fully in the tank for The Donald. At least as long as he keeps slipping checks to them.

tl;dr version: “Don’t tell us not to scream and hate! Don’t lecture us on being destructive, right when we’re really getting warmed up in alienating everyone who isn’t a 83-year-old Imperial Grand Wizard!”

Viz: “…consistent with GOP leadership’s longstanding practice of demeaning its own voter base.”

From the comments:

“They asked Donald what he thought of that..CLASSIC Trump answer…Donald said she is verrry weak on illegals and that with all the money SHE has begged him for during her campaigns she should think twice before speaking out.

Then they asked Trump if he agreed that Haley was a “rising star in the GOP and a great VP pick”..Trump said since HE is the one leading in every poll so if she was hoping for a VP spot she was NOT off to a good start! LOL. Trump then said whoever he chooses for VP would be very strong on illegals just like him..and Haley isn’t. Nobody trumps TRUMP…woohoo. TRUMP/USA!!”

“Cuckservatives have proven ineffectual. We need hard Nationalists who put Americans and America first using conservative values without the globalism.”

“William F. Buckley was one of these people. He was a Closet Marxist-Trotskyite (Neocon) just like his good friend Irving Kristol. The persona of Buckley as Constitutional Conservative was a carefully crafted deception.”

“It’s simple. The GOPe thinks Trump will get rolled by Hillary, so they’re trying to distance themselves from him by pretending they’re the adults in the room and that Trump is a child. But what they’re doing is distancing themselves from the GOP base. They need to wake up. Bush isn’t going to get the nomination.”

“They did give up on that, the other Bush is now their new great brown skinned hope. You do know that Marco Rubio is really a bastard Bush, right? Story I heard Mamma Rubio was once a young maid at a Bush compound and one of them knocked her up.”

“Nikki Merkel Haley. And we see what the new Rapuegees in Germany do.”

“Buck mcdonald LiberatedCit • 9 hours ago
Isn’t Haley the history fighting and destroying fool ?
Stands for nothing
Just a place setting
Or place holder

Get out bitch”

Apologies for not putting the Breitbart comments behind a “Click to Reveal” button. They really are all the worst parts of an adolescent man-child’s brain, put on public display. Still, they are a growing force to be reckoned with in the GOP, and I think that it’s starting to sink in to the GOPe that they are not going to get these rabid dogs back on the leash anytime soon.

Oh, and: thanks for the Twitter promotion, Charles.

The GOP has become just what the GOP was pandering to. And to top it off, an “outsider” slips in and drives off with the pretty hate machine they spent so much time and money on. What’s the matter boys? Did your “Cowboy” show up in a business suit this time? Drive off with the ride? Out bad mouth you? The Cargo Cult is having a hard time of it. So many mouths to feed with no plans outside of “It’s all their fault.” I hope King Pimp fractures the GOP into the thousands of pieces it deserves. Maybe then they could get back to governing and serving this nation.

Speaking of continuous loops of Fox:

With Roger Ailes Absent, Fox News Is Drifting — There Isn’t Even a ‘Trump Strategy’

For the past two decades, Rupert Murdoch allowed Fox News chief Roger Ailes to occupy one of the most unique — and powerful — perches in American politics and media: running a right-wing political operation under the guise of a 24-hour news network. As long as the profits rolled in, Murdoch virtually never meddled in Ailes’s world — even when his own family protested. “He lets me run it, he doesn’t bother me much,” Ailes boasted of Murdoch as recently as April 2015. But that laissez-faire era seems to be over.

According to four high-placed Fox sources, Murdoch is upping his presence at Fox while Ailes has become less visible to anchors and producers, signaling a shift that marks a new chapter in the network’s history. […]

Murdoch has so far been a quiet observer, but his presence at the table is striking to Fox executives. Some interpret it as a sign that the 84-year-old, newly engaged Australian mogul is preparing for a future when the 75-year-old Ailes is no longer in the picture. It’s one of the most significant decisions Wall Street will be watching: Fox is valued at north of $15 billion and generates as much as 30 percent of Murdoch’s profits. […]

The succession question seems to be taking on new urgency after three sources say Ailes threatened to quit this summer when Murdoch elevated his sons, Lachlan and James, to take over the media empire. After their promotions were announced, Ailes put out his own statement on Fox Business that declared he would continue reporting directly to Rupert. Eventually, an uneasy accord was reached: Rupert gave Ailes a new contract, but Fox issued a follow-up press release clarifying that Ailes would report to Lachlan and James. […]

Meanwhile, Fox hosts and producers tell me Ailes has been a somewhat diminished force at the network. In 2014, he took an extended leave of absence after a health scare. He still has trouble walking and rarely ventures out of his executive suite. […]

Now more than ever Fox needs a firm hand on the wheel. In many ways, the channel faces the same rebellion from the grassroots that’s cleaving the GOP. “I can tell you, my base is fed up with Fox,” conservative commentator Michelle Malkin told me. Malkin, who quit Fox as a contributor, actually goes after Murdoch for supporting immigration reform in her new book Sold Out (she calls him a “treacherous bedfellow”).

[…]

Hate has been very profitable for Murdoch.

But the true believers are discovering, in their slow way, that Murdoch really only cares about money.

Ailes sounds like he is starting the end-of-life spiral (using a walker, becoming mentally detached.) No wonder the older but still more capable Murdoch is hands-on at Fox now.

The hate-right crowd, like Malkin, have no where else to go for the amount of coverage they get, but I bet they will become even more disenchanted with Fox. Ailes’ replacement will have to report to one of Murdoch’s sons and that means less ideology and more advertising revenues.

The Trump cyst isn’t going to boil over, I don’t think, but neither is it going to burn out. The die may simply be cast at this point. There are those Republican voters who are willing to look around and actually see what the world is, at least a little bit, and those who want to Make Whatever Great Again, regardless of its current level of greatness. We’ll find out which side is bigger over the coming months.

The GOP might be stuck dealing with the people who have checked out of reason and fact-based worldviews until they simply die out.

Speaking of those checking out:

Atheist’s invocation cut off when she reminds Tenn. city council they shouldn’t invoke God at meetings

Also:

Rationalists representative tells Council it shouldn’t invoke deities at meetings

On Monday, Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch cut off Ledendecker’s invocation after more than two minutes in order to begin the Pledge of Allegiance, and Baughn re-entered the room. The mayor said he doesn’t know who will give the invocation until the agenda is released, and he was cordial, courteous, and respectful to Ledendecker.

America is losing its God.

Very slowly, compared to how quickly Europe went post-Christian, but it is happening.

And this is causing lots of angst.

And that is why we saw the women in the many-colored robe at last night’s SOTU.

It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to use populist and racist propaganda to stir up support for your nationalist party as the Fox network has done. They then had a built-in audience of the military once Bush took office and every base broadcast their propaganda network.

I’ve heard liberals say they want to destroy conservatism too. But not on a platform like Limbfuck.

I think Obama is going to reveal a lot more of a ‘no more fucks to give’ attitude than any of us can imagine from now until he leaves office. The last part of his final SOTU, you could hear it in his voice. He’s eager to use the bully pulpit, he wants to get shit done before he leaves office.

I’m still hoping for an October surprise where Obama signs an executive order legalizing cannabis nationwide. Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

Best allies?

You mean like friendly fire incidents during the Gulf War? Or World War II? Or Vietnam? Or during the Iraq War or Afghan conflict?

Or maybe even the Israeli action against the USS Liberty? And those all involved actual allies.

Iran? Nominally non-belligerent is one way to consider it (considering that Iran doesn’t want a straight up war with the US knowing that the IRGC would be decimated and with it its regional reach or ability to stop Saudi Arabia).

I’m a control freak when it comes to HTML. I even created my own horizontal rules to use in regular comments where we can’t add styles (like borders, padding, etc.) Actually, I created four of them—two the width of blockquoted paragraph text (556 px) and two the width of regular paragraph text (620 px).

I made them that size so there won’t be a wrapping issue like when you float a smaller image left or right. Then, just for good measure I created two versions of each size—one with the horizontal rule in the center, and another with it on the left.1 If Charles changes the width of anything again I’m gonna be giving him the stink-eye.

1. See how pretty it looks? I even considered making versions in different colors, but I came to my senses before I did. Trying to make this wrap around to the next line… hmm, still a bit too much leading for my tastes, but I can live with it.

There are a lot of Americans who have no hope to live anywhere nearly as well as their parents did, because the work they qualify for was automated, or shifted to low-paying overseas jobs, and that creates a lot of frustration. Add all the insane right-wing propaganda that too many disaffected Americans marinate in, and acting out in comments sections is the least we can expect.

Ironically, these are the people who would benefit the most from shifting to a socialist system and a guaranteed basic income, but they’ve been brainwashed into hating their best hope.

We wouldn’t be up to our asses in wingnuts if they were able to live prosperous lives like many of their parents did. When people are afraid they often turn to hate.

There are that many. There are far more than you think.

But the real thing is that there are that many, because they are us. They’re our friends, relatives, neighbours, and ourselves. I think we forget this sometimes - they are humans just like us. It is part of the human condition to react and speak without thinking, to be vulnerable to fear and anger and hate and to respond emotively rather than reasonably.

This is why FOX is so successful. Susceptibility to cults and brainwashing is part of the human condition, and this exists to some degree in all of us. Similarly, thinking of those we don’t see and don’t agree with as something other than human is also something that comes all too easily to us as humans. It’s what the far right relies on, but it’s nothing new throughout history. We are humans, and this means we can think and say the most ridiculous, hateful, and benighted things while still being good to our families, reliable at our jobs, and integrating with society most of the time. People who are hateful and stupid all the time are rare, just as rare as those who are benevolent and wise all the time.

FOX and the far right media excel at bringing out the hateful and stupid in people. I try to recognise that it is a part of everyone, myself included, and that humans can be better than that if their better natures are encouraged, rather than their venal ones.
