Wednesday Night Jam: The 500th Tiny Desk Concert: The Arcs

It’s already been a hell of a week for intense news, so now it’s time for some great music as NPR’s Tiny Desk series celebrates their 500th concert by hosting The Arcs, featuring the awesome Mariachi Flor de Toloache.

January 25, 2016 by BOB BOILEN

Today, we celebrate the release of our 500th Tiny Desk concert. It’s amazing that something that started as a bit of a wisecrack has been so widely embraced by artists and fans. In 2008 at SXSW in Austin, NPR Music’s Stephen Thompson and I met up to see singer Laura Gibson. Laura was so quiet, and the crowd was so loud and rude — something about a March basketball game — that Stephen jokingly asked her to come play at my desk so we could hear her. My lightbulbs went off, and a month later, Laura came to D.C.; I was ready with a couple of cameras, a microphone, my desk and a chair.

In the years since, we’ve had the privilege of enjoying intimate moments with Adele, Tom Jones, T-Pain, The Tallest Man On Earth, Mavis Staples, Phoenix, Reggie Watts, Andrew W.K., Kacey Musgraves, John Legend, Ralph Stanley, Sylvan Esso, Lianne La Havas and 486 more. It’s a list that includes opera singers, Romanian brass bands, legendary bluegrass singers and pickers, a Colombian jazz harpist, a bagpiper, legends of country, jazz, rock, R&B… and, most importantly, artists unknown.

This Tiny Desk Concert with The Arcs is a perfect intersection of the known and the unknown. The band is headed by Dan Auerbach, whom we know from The Black Keys. It’s also fronted by Richard Swift, one of the best modern producers of intriguing pop music; he can be found on drums in The Arcs alongside a contemporary R&B drumming legend in Homer Steinweiss, known for his work in The Dap-Kings and with Amy Winehouse. It’s a bundle of talent that also includes the Mariachi band Flor de Toloache, which provides backing vocals and plays violin, trumpet and guitar. The songs from The Arcs’ album Yours, Dreamily provide a finely crafted blend of soul and pop, with enough playfulness to keep it fun, not perfect.

That’s the spirit of the Tiny Desk: It’s casual, with a mix of artistry and adventure that’s different from hearing a record or seeing a band on a big stage. It’s a tiny window that’s both intimate and a bit awkward — and always revealing and entertaining.

Yours, Dreamily, is available now.

What is Facebook but a never ending stream of comments?

There are corners of the internet that have done well by allowing comments - it’s all in how it is done.

Long long ago someone came up with the truism - Bad money drives out good.

That is a distillation of human nature.

So this came across my news feeds:

On the Viability of Conspiratorial Beliefs

Conspiratorial ideation is the tendency of individuals to believe that events and power relations are secretly manipulated by certain clandestine groups and organisations. Many of these ostensibly explanatory conjectures are non-falsifiable, lacking in evidence or demonstrably false, yet public acceptance remains high. Efforts to convince the general public of the validity of medical and scientific findings can be hampered by such narratives, which can create the impression of doubt or disagreement in areas where the science is well established. Conversely, historical examples of exposed conspiracies do exist and it may be difficult for people to differentiate between reasonable and dubious assertions. In this work, we establish a simple mathematical model for conspiracies involving multiple actors with time, which yields failure probability for any given conspiracy. Parameters for the model are estimated from literature examples of known scandals, and the factors influencing conspiracy success and failure are explored. The model is also used to estimate the likelihood of claims from some commonly-held conspiratorial beliefs; these are namely that the moon-landings were faked, climate-change is a hoax, vaccination is dangerous and that a cure for cancer is being suppressed by vested interests. Simulations of these claims predict that intrinsic failure would be imminent even with the most generous estimates for the secret-keeping ability of active participants—the results of this model suggest that large conspiracies (≥1000 agents) quickly become untenable and prone to failure. The theory presented here might be useful in counteracting the potentially deleterious consequences of bogus and anti-science narratives, and examining the hypothetical conditions under which sustainable conspiracy might be possible.

Here’s an anecdote about the reliability of witnesses. One of the things we do in CERT is work the Fourth of July celebration and fireworks in my home town. One of our responsibilities at the celebration is to help when children (or parents) go missing. A couple of years ago, we had a woman come to our tent to tell us she can’t find her daughter. We ask her what her daughter looks like and what she’s wearing, and the mom tells us she’s a seven year old wearing a one piece bathing suit with flowers.

So we go looking. After about fifteen minutes, the girl is found, wearing a black two piece bathing suit.

I don’t think it’s quite over yet.
Something is happening at the courthouse in Burns and there are some reporters at one of the checkpoints. Jason Patrick still hasn’t surrendered and there are still 3 or 4 people at the refuge.

My wife was flipping through the channels and we caught a little bit of a documentary from last year about the child refugees in Syria. The documentary maker was going through camps in Syria talking to the children, asking them about what was happening around them. The boy, around 10, they talk to uses Daesh. The reporter admonishes him for using it, but the boy uses it again.

Considering kids pick those things up from their parents, the word is being used in Syria.

And if not, after watching his videos, how can he just walk around with a gun? It seems to me rather obvious that he can be committed for psychiatric evaluation and probably be put as a ward of the state.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Ammon Bundy, through his attorney Wednesday, asked the remaining armed occupiers at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to stand down and go home.

Bundy, the leader of the occupiers, and seven others were arrested Tuesday night near Burns. One of the occupiers, LaVoy Finicum, was shot and killed during the confrontation with federal authorities.

Bundy and the others were taken to Portland and booked into the Multnomah County Jail and made their first appearance in federal court on felony charges.

“I’m asking the federal government to allow the people at the refuge to go home without being prosecuted,” Bundy said through his attorney Mike Arnold, who stood outside court to read Bundy’s statement. “To those remaining at the refuge, I love you. Let us take this fight from here. Please stand down. Please stand down. Go home and hug your families. This fight is ours for now in the courts. Please go home.”

Emphasis is mine. Yea, I don’t think the the Feds will just let people pack up and go home because you’d like that. I’ve been wrong before, but I’m pretty sure on this one.

Interesting—NAACP met with Snyder etc. yesterday, and their #1 priority for dealing with the Flint issue is repeal the emergency manager law. (Which, if you remember, the voters did by referendum, and then Snyder and his GOP henchmen reversed and put it back in practice and made it even worse, but making it so it could never come up for referendum again.)

Being Trump’s running mate might not be a bad career move if you think he can win. The reason being, even if he does win, I don’t think he’d make it through midterm elections before being impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate for trying to start a war (trade or otherwise) with Eurasia (and I don’t mean in the 1984 sense, I mean with a majority of countries that make up Europe and/or Asia).

The FBI needs to give them a way to walk out and save face. Maybe an appeal to think of their families and loved ones, and how this way they will get their day in court to let the people know their feelings.

I’d hate to see this end like the last scene in Devils Rejects. It’s pretty graphic, so I’m putting it in a spoiler.

People have a wide range of opinions about Lawrence O’Donnell, but he makes some great points. Tonight he suggested that Trump is trying to establish a precedent of avoiding debates because if he gets the nomination, he’ll never be able to go one on one and talk for 40+ minutes. If the comparison comes from Anne Frank’s stepsister, does it count as a Godwin?

Anne Frank’s stepsister compares Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler

(CNN)In an essay to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Anne Frank’s stepsister accused Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump of “acting like another Hitler.”

Eva Schloss, now 86, was a friend of Frank’s in Amsterdam after their families fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Her mother, Fritzi, would marry Otto Frank, Anne’s father, after World War II.

“If Donald Trump become(s) the next president of the U.S. it would be a complete disaster,” she told Newsweek on Wednesday. “I think he is acting like another Hitler by inciting racism.”

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Schloss survived Auschwitz while Frank and her mother died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and Anne Frank’s diary became a famous account of life as a Jewish family under Hitler’s Nazi Germany.

If he gets the nomination and then refuses to do the general election debates, he will lose. There’s just no way that it could be spun as a positive move and the media will crush him for it.

Also, because apparently some part of me hates the rest of me, I’ve just been looking at some general election polls. I have to wonder, when was the last time we had a general election where the nominees both had negative favorable/unfavorable ratings? Because the polls seem pretty consistent that Clinton and Trump are both sitting around 45/52 on favorable/unfavorable. That’s one more thing that makes me think/worry that this could be a low turnout election, in which all bets would be off regarding the outcome.

Where is Wencke?” It’s a powerful story of just about the worst waste of life in the entire war. Then earlier this evening I was reading a book about the Russian soldiers’ experiences. One officer was cited throughout the book as a veteran from the very beginning of the war. As the author recounts details of the Battle of Berlin she relates that Lt. Belov wouldn’t get to see his daughter born because he was killed at the Elbe river on May 5, 1945. (The war ended May 8)

I don’t know if this was posted earlier, but just when I thought I could loathe Ritzheimer and more than I already do, I find that he outdid himself.

What a classic POS bully who’s really the worst sort of craven coward at heart. When they’re with a group of like-minded thugs they act all cocky & tough and walk around trying to intimidate people. The minute they’re faced with a group bigger, tougher & better armed than them, they turn into blubbering pantywaists. *spit, spit, SPIT…*

Gah! I’ve had enough of these cretins for one day.

G’nite, lizards.

I’m assuming that the shirt she was wearing was a Bureau of Land Management shirt and not a Black Lives Matter one - and there is also the question of whether Ritzheimer is intelligent enough to tell the difference.

Many many years ago, some folks in my unit and I were TDY’d without orders to the US Marshall service in Idaho, long before it became a headline story. The whole idea of constantly communicating with their “supporters” on open channels, providing details of their motivations and plans, defies all logic. It would be like the enemy in a war using plain text messages to communicate with their forces, with no intention of deceiving the listeners.

Vainglory. Used to be the eighth deadly sin.

They’re amping themselves up by performing their beliefs for an audience, and by running lines for one another.

Ideological belief isn’t as solid and fixed as we like, particularly when you edge up against a decision that means likely death. In the face of a collapsing episteme, you can either psych yourself up and re-commit, or you can concede you don’t “feel” you convictions. Basically, they’ve built themselves an identity they like—even if it’s all mythos and incompetence—and don’t want to give it up. All options that include living include failing their sense of identity…so dying seems like a way out.

It’s an example of the absurd at play…it would be sad, but the for other boil of self-identity, meaning, absurdity at play: that killing “the other” would make them feel greater fixity in their personas.

It’s the gap between banality of evil and evil-evil: egoist evil, to coin a term.

It’s Arabic, I’m pretty sure, but I am not sure what it says. It could be a number.

I just found out. It is a symbol that Daesh paints on houses of suspected Christians, so some people have started using it here as self identification.

Anybody still up who has a great meatball recipe?

Gordon Ramsey’s are the best. So delicious and easy. Skip the broth (but it’s completely delish, I’ve made it numerous times) if you want. The meatballs go with anything; Italian sauces, what have you.

Hands down best recipe I’ve ever used.

BTW, “seasoning” is just salt and pepper. He never says that, though. Must be British.

If you removed the chili flakes, that would be my mother’s recipe. It works great with anything!

Henry Ford was an interesting choice. I can think of someone else who claimed Ford as an inspiration but it’s not shocking considering the crowd that Trump is actively recruiting.

So the hardcore Ya’ll Qaeda remnants are getting drunk and stoned? And there’s no longer anyone around to make them a sammich?

I’m wondering if the FBI has been reading LGF?

Thanks! I will definitely try that tomorrow. I experimented today to see if I could make my spaghetti sauce in a crock pot, just cuz. It came out wonderfully. A friend is coming over tomorrow evening so I figured spaghetti and meatballs would be good but I’ve never actually made a great meatball. (Though my sauce freakin’ rocks - used to make it in 8 qt batches to freeze in qt jars.)

Wait, meatballs have recipes? I always just rifle through the kitchen and throw whatever looks good into a mixing bowl…

re: #125 Decatur Deb

Around 1955 there was a b&w TV show where people like Dorothy Killgalen had to act out charades. One of them was:
“I drew my trusty Bowie knife and cut my way through a wall of human flesh, dragging my canoe behind me”.

TV was weird. So is my memory.

‘So what happened to the goat?’

“It was very good with mustard.”

W. C. Fields

re: #325 BeenHereAwhile

I put the entire phrase into Google for a memory check. It’s slightly different, but the writers copped it from W.C. (Strangely, I’d almost insist they changed it, towards the remembered wording. Have a strong memory of a very tall male guest acting it out.)

(IIRC)
In the W. C. Fields original script, he had a goat under the other arm. not holding the Bowie knife.

Thus after regaling the crowd about carving his way thru a wall of human flesh, he’s asked:

Say, what happened to the goat?

“It was very good with mustard.”

(Not trying to be pedantic, just appreciating reference to classic W. C. Fields)

The TV charade challenge definitely stopped short of the goat. At first I thought your movie dialogue was an odd selection for charades (too well-known), but now see that it was already about 20 years old then.
