Carried over from the previous thread:

re: #117 Cheechako

Now, let’s see. trump starts a trade war by adding a tariff to Canadian lumber being imported into the US. Of course this increases the cost for ALL lumber, from both Canada and the US.

So, now any lumber needed to build his wall is going to cost “somebody” a lot more $’s.
And the price of the wall goes even higher.

Boy, that trump president guy has a good head for business. He’s real good at increasing business costs so businesses can go bankrupt even faster.

My head is spinning.

He still doesn’t have a good head for the Constitution or governance. Tariffs are taxes, and thus must originate in the US House. The President can’t impose a unilateral tariff on anything.

I suspect there are exactly zero Republican representatives that want to cut their own political throats trying to explain that to their constituents.

On the other hand, such concerns might rattle the markets. Might be worthwhile to find out who makes money on such a tariff threat scaring the stock market.

The only way this would be remotely a concern is if Obama still has access to the TARDIS.

If she somehow wants to go into public office because she feels that’s where she can do the most good, and she convinces the voters of whatever that office is to vote for her - more power to her. Seriously. Because she has seen firsthand the toll it takes and she’s watched how the country treats its women politicians in particular.

If she’s strong enough to face that and wants to take it on, I have a shitton of respect for her for that. (Voting for her would still depend on her platform, whether I was a legal voter for that particular thing, etc., but I’m sure as hell not going to automatically rule her out because “Clinton” like so many people are already ready to do.)

It’s racism. Again. From the left. I am so sick of this, but one more time: When Obama, an intelligent and articulate moderate, was elected in 2008, far too many people of the left assumed that he was putting on the centrist shuck’n’jive in order to get elected but really he’d throw off that tie and reveal himself as a revolutionary. That was a racist assumption that none of them will ever cop to. Obama is a good guy, but he’s a capitalist — he fucking says so!

My hero wouldn’t take that $400,000 but that’s because my hero doesn’t exist.

BeachDem  Apr 25, 2017 • 6:48:31pm

And about all the “unintelligible” parts of the AP interview (it was ALL unintelligent, but I digress.)

Charles P. Pierce:

How can something said in this interview situation possibly be “unintelligible”? Did the president* mumble something into his shirt? Did he lapse into whispering? Did he start speaking in Aramaic or in tongues? Did he start singing obscure show tunes in an unknown Balkan dialect? What in the name of god is going on here?

There was the customary sprawling ravine between his applause lines on the stump and what he’s actually doing, delivered in what appears at first glance to be English but which, on further review, seems to be a dialect somewhere between Old English and Woody Woodpecker.

Chinese Workers at Factory for Ivanka Trump’s Clothing Maker Earn About $62 a Week: Report

Raisa Bruner
7:52 PM ET

A new report by a watchdog group found the Chinese knitting factory used by a company that makes clothing for Ivanka Trump’s brand has poor conditions and pay, with workers putting in up to 60 hours a week for wages of about $62 weekly.

The factory violated two dozen standards set by the U.N. International Labor Organization when it was inspected this fall by the Fair Labor Association, an industry watchdog, the Washington Post reports.

For at least two years I’ve had problems with my internet connection (through Cox.)

Across multiple versions of MacOS the same problem has manifested.

They assigned IP (gotten through the DHCP method) randomly reverts to one of the reserved local blocks (i.e. 192.soforth .)

I don’t know why. Cox claims it isn’t them. ( I still doubt that.) Nothing I do on my Mac seems to make this problem permanently go away.

It existed before I used any VPN software and it exists after I’ve experimented with some.

It existed over 3 versions of MacOS.

It’s maddening especially tonight, when it seems my IP address stays for only a minute or so before going belly up.

Okay, I have a deal to suggest - let people choose! They like choice, right? Health freedom and all that? You get to choose whether to pay premiums based on the original Obamacare’s “Community Rating”, or you can pay premiums based on individual rating, so if you’re young and have no preexisting conditions, your premiums are way lower!

Just one little catch - if you choose the latter, it only pays for doctor visits, preventive care, etc. No major medical. You get cancer? Well, pal, you should have thought of that before you chose the cheapo plan!

That is eerily similar to the ski resorts in Kazakhistan.

Dictatorship is so theatrical, so much about gestures and appearances: I mean, all politics is, but autocrats in particular have to stake everything on that sense of connection between charismatic figure and loyal mass. Not that they’re even trying for true loyalty, but just enough “gifts” and showy activities to make people feel connected, invested. Makes my head hurt.

That’s a lot like pre-ACA. People need to stop thinking of care as something you choose at Walgreens late at night when your significant other has a cold. The healthy pay in to help the sick so that when they’re no longer healthy, the younger healthy are paying into it.

But, but NRA headquarters is in DC! They would simply grab their muskets AR-15s and join other patriots to meet the invaders, much as the heroic militia did in 1814 at the Battle of Bladensburg. Militia performance there led a British officer to quip, “Rarely have men with arms in their hands made better use of their legs.”

The battle was termed “the greatest disgrace ever dealt to American arms” and “the most humiliating episode in American history”. The American militia actually fled through the streets of Washington. President James Madison and most of the rest of the federal government had been present at the battle, and had nearly been captured. They too fled the capital, and scattered through Maryland and Virginia. That same night the British entered Washington unopposed and set fire to many of the government buildings in what became known as the Burning of Washington.

It’s intentionally like the pre-ACA. They Freedom Caucus hates Community Rating because, I suppose, it doesn’t punish people enough for getting sick. I could see them really liking my plan, because at least half their fun in wanting ‘freedom’ is sneering at people who then make poor choices.

Remember a year or so ago when they were telling young people they didn’t need health insurance? Well, of course they don’t! Nobody does, till they do! And if young people en masse had taken that advice and not gotten health insurance, the Freedom Caucus types would get to point at them and call them irresponsible for not having health insurance.

I try not to hate people. Really, really I do! But those fuckers make it SO DIFFICULT!!!

That’s basically what they’re trying to do at this point, get us back to the cheapo “bare bones” plans that they could sell to the unwashed masses. Convince them that for pennies a day, they were getting this “great” plan that would cover them in their time of need, only for them to wheel out the “You didn’t read the fine print” bit when it came time to actually make a claim for a major medical event. And they’re pushing an anti-choicer style play by allowing insurers to charge the sick more, which will act as a defacto return to the era of “pre-existing conditions.”

Poor little Jimmy, no one takes his videos at face value anymore…

“…Wisconsin’s Republican attorney general, Brad Schimel, said shortly after the videos were released that he was concerned they suggest election and voter fraud.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel obtained a Jan. 31 DOJ memo discussing the videos through an open records request. In the memo, Assistant Attorney General Roy Korte concludes the statements in the videos are vague and lack context. Supplemental videos the DOJ obtained are also vague and do nothing to clear up the ambiguous nature of the original recordings, Korte said.

“Based on all the available facts I do not believe there is any basis to conclude that the videos demonstrate or suggest violations of Wisconsin law,” Korte wrote….”

I’m ready for President Obama’s reëducation camps now: Apparently we need them.

Two federalized deputies working for Trey Gowdy were discovered tortured and killed recently while on their way to serve a search warrant on the Clinton Presidential library. The details of the crime are sketchy but one thing is certain: whoever pulled it off is a pro who left absolutely no evidence behind.

Mr. Gowdy, who has had little to nothing to say on the matter for security reasons, released a statement from his office where he is currently holed up under the protection of US Marshals:

Surely we could as the wealthiest nation in the history of the world afford healthcare for all (whether it is some form of “Medicare for all” or a better-funded and expanded Public Health Service).

There is no reason for people to go without decent healthcare in our country than unmitigated greed. My sister and her wife are getting crushed with my sister-in-law’s cancer treatments - she’s set up a GoFundMe account which has received a small sum. (No one should have to beg for healthcare either.)

In my sister’s case, the healthcare bills are destroying their ability to stay in Berkeley: They are planning to leave California because healthcare/cost of living do not match up. (They make many times more than my disability.)

Except that would actually require the 1% to pay their fair share of taxes. And we know that any Republican tax “reform” will reduce the “burden” on the “poor” rich and instead raise taxes on the unworthy poor. The main rationale for attacks on the ACA is to reduce taxes on the wealthy, who are now forced to pay additional taxes to support the program

Of course, if Trump serves a complete term, we may no longer be the wealthiest nation in the world and may actually no longer have the resources to provide such benefits.

The new Republican amendment, introduced Tuesday night, would allow states to waive out of Obamacare’s ban on pre-existing conditions. This means that insurers could once again, under certain circumstances, charge sick people higher premiums than healthy people.

Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) who authored this amendment confirmed this was the case: members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping this Obamacare regulations. Health law expert Tim Jost flagged me to this particular issue.

I was aware the article is a fake. I was just noting it appears to be popping up on wingnut feeds.

The Internet sure turned out to be a double sword. Information at the world’s fingertips, and the biggest propaganda tool ever devised.

Goodnight, Calochortus flower-person. I’m off to bed, too. I have a long drive to hopefully pick up Felix Strangelet Randomkitty in the morning.

WTF is wrong with their mouths? Do they not shut? It’s not like they’re smiling or anything.

Are you familiar with HP Lovecraft, the Innsmouth cultists?

That’s what’s wrong, it was non-fiction.

re: #158 Anymouse

How many “single unelected judges” do they think are appropriate? Ten? Fifty? None?

I am really tired of the fascism-love coming out of the Executive Branch and the GOP in the House and Senate, along with a large part of the press, treating this as if it is simply political games.

Actually Federal Judges are not “Unelected”. They are elected by a vote in the Senate.

Coddleswop

Not to be pedantic, but isn’t the word actually ‘codswallop?’
