tr*mp continues to be the very worst specimen of humanity. I honestly think tr*mp is a more vile person than Hitler was, and that the only things stopping tr*mp from exceeding Hitler’s crimes is lack of comparable opportunities for hate mongering and laziness/incompetence.

A Hurricane news dump.

In actual fact this doesn’t bother me much.

First, he guilty. He has to admit as much. As nice as 6 months inside would have been, it would have still allowed him to plead a mythical witch hunt. I’ll take the admission anyday.

Secondly it ties into the Trump is a racist narrative. While his knuckle dragging base will applaud this, most won’t.

Thirdly, and probably the most esoteric is an indication that something is coming. Trump has spent the day rallying the mono brow christo-fascists, especially with the Transgender shite today. If we’ve learnt anything he is always at his worst just before fan meets shit.

Could be linked to Manafort’s PR companies supoenas today. Does he know something?

Thought exercise: I came up with the following after about maybe 3-4 minutes’ thought, and composition: (it take about 30-35 seconds to recite):

Thank you ladies and gentlemen. The First Family and I will be going off to Camp David for the weekend, but the people should rest assured that I will be carefully monitoring the situation regarding the terrible storm in Texas, and that we(I) will be in constant contact with the responsible local, state, and federal agencies to ensure that everything that can be done to aid the victims of this disaster will be done to the best extent of the government’s resources. Thank you very much/

So how hard could it be? Some Random Guy On The Internet (me) comes up with a coherent (and decent) statement for the POTUS on Hurricane Harvey.
And what do we get from the actual “President”?
A wave, and “good luck”…..

Arpaio is a loyal friend now, because he’s been in prison and hasn’t been able to do anything. Now that he’s been pardoned and turned loose, though, the Trump bus will inevitably run over him, as well. Has a presidential pardon ever been rescinded?

He’s never seen a day of prison. This is a birther thank you.

I think Bill has a point, Trump is going to use his pardon power to get his co-conspirators off the hook. They’ll immediately clam up as Mueller will lose his leverage over them, and we end up with a Iran-Contra rerun where all the crooks walk and the head honcho claims to have been so scatter-brained that there’s no way he could have broken the law.

“Michael Steele was bemoaning that the other night on a couch-journalism show.”

Michael Steele can “bemoan” as much GOP BS as much as he wants, but he helped to build this by always popping up on TV in the past to defend everything the Right did, and I mean everything. He also never missed an opportunity to criticize PBO harshly for everything he did. He didn’t remember he was black until RNC members began talking about getting rid of his behind. It was only then that he started talking about how much harder he had to work as RNC Chairman because he was black. In my case, his new found realization that he was black when the RNC moved to replace his butt did nothing for me. I didn’t have any sympathy for him then, and I have none for him now. Dude’s just as fake as Trump when it comes to the GOP. He’ll whine about how the GOP is headed in the wrong direction, but when the rubber meets the road, he’s still onboard the GOP Train.

I finished rereading “What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848”, and this section in the conclusion about the Seneca Falls Convention was poignant to me:

“The signers [of the resolution, which included a demand for women’s suffrage,] included a nineteen-year-old farmer’s daughter named Charlotte Woodward, who had driven the family wagon forty miles to come; she sewed gloves in a factory but hoped to become a typesetter in a printshop (then a male preserve) because she loved books. During the nationwide uproar that followed, when newspapers all over the country reported the women’s rights convention and many of them deplored and mocked it, some of the signers came back to scratch out their names. Charlotte Woodward let hers stand. In 1920, at the first presidential election following ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment that guaranteed the right to vote regardless of sex, she alone of all the signers remained alive to cast her ballot.”

He did it as a “FU” to the judicial branch by preemptively overturning a conviction. It’s been shown time and again that Trump believes himself (and those close to him) as being above the law and this is his waving it in every one of their faces.

I’m racking my brain to think of another instance where a President basically went the route of judicial nullification - Outside of Nixon and other high-level federal officeholders who were kicked out of their positions (whose removal was sufficient punishment) I can’t think of anyone who got a full pardon before sentencing.

This is why pardons can be rejected while commutations can’t. Accepting a pardon is an explicit admission of guilt.

So I look at it like the panels in the tweet FDD posted in #200 - an expression of what we’re fighting to preserve here and now even when all seems as lost.

I thought by accepting a pardon they would lose their 5th amendment rights?

He’s damn sure never heard of the OAS, the right wing French army gang that carried out 50 terror bombings a day in the spring of 1962. Most of these were in Algeria but many were in Metropolitan France and some as far afield as Tokyo, Brazil, and Martinique. OAS gunmen once massacred 57 Algerian cleaning ladies as they lined up to be paid.

That list barely even scratches the surface on Arpaio. It doesn’t include his ties with white supremacists - two famous examples being Russell Pearce (kicked out of AZ Senate after discovery of Neo-Nazi ties - he was Arpaio’s chief deputy before this), and J.T.Ready, now-dead Neo-Nazi who went on a murder-suicide rampage.

And of course there’s this, when Arpaio spoke at a white nationalist rally a few years back (note where the image is from):

Hurricane themed poem for this evening:

GATHERING STORM

The waves are thrashing against the old shore,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

The gusts are ripping the land to its core,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

A storm surge of almost twenty five feet,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

There’s calamity and emptiness out in the streets,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

The trees are falling from the force of the wind,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

The eye’s coming soon now, the countdown begins,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

For those who left home, we hope they’ll be safe,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

For those left behind, we hope it’s not too late,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

Fury and lightning strike out through the dark,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

Such fury on display, so raw and so stark,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

We’ll watch with concern and hope for the best,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

It’ll never be the same out there in the west,
It’s a hell of a night in Texas.

Very heavy rain starting now, thunderstorms. My area is under a tornado warning. Lost power twice, waiting for it to go out completely.

My thoughts and prayers to our neighbors to the southwest.

I hate to get too pushy, but could Latinos here in Texas use this to finally register and vote?

And then, get a load of this reply:

Somehow little boy, I’ll take the word of a Jesuit about what is sinful over the word of a Nazi.

One hopes so, but it’s always best to be sensitive and aware of when you might not be the best person to make a particular approach.

Last year, one of my wife’s Latino coworkers registered to vote and voted for Clinton. After he registered, I asked him to get his friends and family to register and vote.

Your tweet, if retweeted, doesn’t include a name that will be found by the search hamsters at twitter. POTUS yes, but mostly people don’t search for that. “Trump” or his actual twitter handle will let a tweet be seen by more people.

Rain starting, a little wind. Cats know something is up so they have made their sleeping arrangements in my garage. Just opened a bottle of Caymus, got the Astros on.

A non-political interlude and a less destructive natural phenomenon — at least if people don’t go crazy:

One minute before totality:

Same shot at totality:

Totality 1 (although wheat-dogg’s is infinitely better):

Totality 2:

Totality almost over:

Same shot, just after totality:

That, btw, is a problem with replying on twitter. If someone else is reading the original tweet and wants to see the replies, they may come across one’s own reply. Otherwise, replies tend to get lost unless they have short strings that can be caught by searches.

Whereas I’m not really competent to photograph the sun, so I took photos of the environment.
