It’s the usual “when all you have is a hammer” syndrome that plagues wingnut beliefs. They’ve spent over a decade portraying everything wrong and “evil” in the Middle East as stemming from Islam, so when people are protesting corruption and grift in their government, the only conclusion wingnuts can reach is that Islam is to blame and the solution is to adopt a “secular” (read: Christian-dominated) gov’t instead.

I strongly suspect that Trump will attempt to find some way to directly assist the protestors for one simple reason: He won’t want to be seen as “failing” like wingnuts insist Obama did by not overtly supporting the ‘09 protests. And I’ll go further to say that I believe he’ll try to intervene by threatening to clamp down with new/stronger sanctions if the Mullahs don’t knuckle under, which will undermine the entire point of the protests.

Perhaps I’m missing things by not watching the news right now, but does it seem like the wingnuts are hoping that these Iranian protests grant them a mulligan on 2009. That “this time,” Trump will intervene on the side of the protestors, the Mullahs will be brought down, and Iran will return to being our bit…er, our “ally.”
I hope you’re wrong about that. The U.S. needs to stay out of this and let Iranians work out their internal issues by themselves. I don’t recall the U.S. intervening with troops in South Africa during the apartheid years or in Rwanda during the genocide.

And then you get secret police, but no skirts. And tens of thousands of young people are asked to die for the difference.

The accident left other co-workers feeling uneasy about the ski area’s operational safety.

My history is very weak but wasn’t the overthrow of the government actually at the behest of BP, because the new rulers were going to nationalize the oil industry? I lived a long walk away, on 75th and 77th. It was an extremely critical part of growing up.
What is astonishing to me is how few people, when talking about Iran, understand that it is entirely possible - even likely - that a popular revolution against a repressive regime will end up creating another repressive regime.

“While the Pahlavi monarch, Mohammad Reza Shah, is remembered as a Westernizing ruler, he also presented himself as a Muslim king. He went on Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, incumbent on Muslims to perform at least once in their lifetimes and undertook other minor pilgrimages around the Islamic world, including the pilgrimage to Mashhad in eastern Iran.
He saluted when he heard the call to prayer and began Nowruz, the Persian New Year, with a ceremony featuring a prayer and sermon by leading religious authorities. And he gave his sons, the heirs to his throne, names that honored the patron saint of modern Iran, the eight Shi’a Imam buried in Mashhad, as well as his father, Reza Shah’s name: Reza and Ali-Reza. In a waqf, or an institutionalized religious donation, to the shrine of the 8th Twelver-Shi’ite Imam Reza in 1948, he called Iran “an Islamic country” and made numerous references to the Qur’an and Hadith. He praised God’s greatness and thanked Him for allowing him to strive so that “the sun of the Shari’ah of the Best of Messengers rises higher.”
In turn, many of the ulema expressed their affection for the King openly. The ulema played key roles in multiple rituals of the court, many of which included praise and prayers for the king. They were involved at his crowning in 1967, as well as the yearly celebrations of Nowruz.”

Because terrified, untrained cops.

Rubio should have been given his unemployment slip this past fall. He clearly only saw the Senate as a stepping stone to the Presidency and has shown that he cares more about being the GOP Establishment’s favorite child.

Oh and why don’t the Pahlavi fanboys point out that he renamed the country from Persia to Iran in 1935 to appease the Third Reich?
Why not mention the fact that Iran was home to an actual Nazi party during World War 2, named Hezb-e-Sumka?

Which is why they shouldn’t have a problem when being equated with the likes of Breivik as he too killed those of the ‘leftist’ persuasion if they continue to extoll the virtues of Pinochet’s reign.

Yep. A lot of em are also apologists for the Processo regime in neighboring Argentina. Dead leftists are okay with them. The Iranian regime is fucked up but it’s that fact it’s Islamic not tyrannical is the wingnuts’ problem with it. Just like they’d be fine with Chavez and Maduro if they were capitalist. The right took all the wrong lessons from the Cold War. They opposed Communism only ebcause of economics rather than the tyrannical nature of regimes like the USSR and PRC.

Mrs. Fish has a big bugaboo about space. She’s terrified of the idea of getting sucked out of a spacecraft. Myself, I think the long-term radiation damage would be more insidious, but hey, that’s why I’m the scientist and she’s the practical thinker.

It just sounds so uncomfortable. I don’t even like flying much here on Earth anyhow. If there were transcontinental train travel, I’d do that in a heartbeat.

In the last few weeks of cruising classic films, I’ve hit this DVD series:
Lots of stuff worthy of the Thalia of the 60s.
back in the heady days of LaserDiscs Criterion Collection were THE discs to have…
Just watched Spider-Man: Homecoming. ($5.99 rental on Amazon) Loved it! A most excellent addition to the Marvel Universe. May watch it again tomorrow with a friend.

I used to be a big fan of flying. Two 13+-hour flights across the Atlantic (one of them under the influence of the stomach flu) later, and I’ll take a hard pass. Hell, I’d sail on the Titanic before I get on another A380.

I’d rather fly than do a transatlantic boat rip TBH. But I don’t blame you. Long flights are exhausting. My brother had two long layovers on his latest trip. L love traveling. I just hate flights heh. I don’t mind the airport itself even if the food is always meh.

Back-to-back-to-back flights of 4 hours, 13 hours, 4 hours really just did me in. 22 hours is a long time to be in the air, and the layovers didn’t really do me any favors. Although I must say that the airport in Dubai is a fantastic place to be laid up for a few hours.

“The Jaunt” is a daaaamn freaky story. Almost as creepy as “Survivor Type.” King does some of his best work in short story formats…
And that reminds me that I owe all of the Lizardim pictures from my expedition to the Indian subcontinent… I will try to work on that tomorrow.

The shorts were the best. Maybe. I’ll argue with myself later.

It’s easier to do horror as a short story. Short formats keep things focused, without the wandering and tangents you might get in a novel. There are plenty of great horror novels, but a good horror short is often damn good. :)

I’ve probably played 10 games today!
LOL. This weekend is total relax for me & I’m not finding anything on netflix or Am prime to stick with (still taking recs)
Even though, I worked this morn, got quite a bit done. Prepping for a breezy January.
Have you watched “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on Amazon yet? I made it last as long as I could. Finished tonight. Started “Fearless.”
I have two projects that need to get done this week/next week. A video script that’s due Tuesday (that I haven’t started yet) and a direct mail campaign that I have to figure out how to reach specific demos in the eastern part of San Bernardino County. Can’t work up the energy to get either one done.

Now you’ve got me trying to think of other story collections worth recommending. Some of Lovecraft’s old stuff is good (and some is problematic). Ramsey Campbell often does great horror short stories. I love M.R. James, but his stuff is super-old and maybe an acquired taste.
I think the best anthology editor is Ellen Datlow. I nearly never see a bad anthology that she’s put together. Any of her “Best Horror Stories of the Year” collections are guaranteed to be filled with show-stoppers.

Because they think everyone is now carrying guns. 2nd amendment in action. Shoot first, ask later.
Now they are going to blame the caller because someone is dead. Sure the calls are stupid but the caller didn’t pull the trigger.
