In Which the Republican Party Continues Trying to Find How Low They Can Possibly Go to Defend Trump

Politics • Views: 35,196

WaPo Video

In all my years watching American politics, I’ve never seen anything like what’s going on with the Republican Party in the era of the Trump-thing. The entire party seems to have given in to the worst kind of paranoid conspiracy-mongering, and lately their targets haven’t been the usual liberal boogeymen like the media or Hollywood — but the federal government itself. Their tactics are very similar to those used by authoritarian governments throughout history, and this type of political bottom feeding never ends well.

There’s a concerted Republican effort underway to smear and discredit the FBI and the Justice Department in order to shield Donald Trump from accountability, as Greg Sargent lays out today: Trump and the great GOP abdication.

Watch the video above to see how all-encompassing this effort is — it’s taking place at every level of the GOP.

Today, I’m told, Sen. Mark Warner (Va.) — the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee — will publicly say that classified information debunks the arguments reportedly made in the now-notorious secret memo by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), which bolsters the idea that the Russia investigation is a Deep-State Coup against Trump. Nunes has made this memo available to members of Congress, in what Democrats charge is a selective cherry-picking of intelligence designed to arm Republicans with talking points to discredit the Russia probe.

“Senator Warner will say publicly that unlike almost all of the 200 GOP congressmen who’ve seen the memo, he has actually read the underlying documents,” Rachel Cohen, a spokeswoman for Warner, emailed me this morning. “He is confident that there was nothing improper like what this memo seems to allege.”

The whole point of the Mueller investigation is to produce incontrovertible evidence and masses of contradictory and inconsistent sworn statements from high-level witnesses to force Congress to act.

Only way the GOP sees to to disarm him is to discredit the FBI and the entire domestic intelligence community as an investigative body.

What this says is that Trump expected TPP to fail without US involvement, it has not, so now he’s trying to play the part of spoiler by saying he’ll take part only if they give into his demands.

The response is likely to be a diplomatic version of “Go fuck yourself.”

ESPN puts Nate Silver’s site up for sale

While I like Nate’s analysis, the reality is that he’s only ever really profitable during election season. Most people do not visit his sit regularly for the articles and if you stripped the site down to just the Trump poll tracking, it would probably get about the same amount of traffic.

Trump is used to negotiating with lots of people who want more than he can offer, so this really won’t be any different than a bankruptcy proceeding and negotiating with creditors. Hopefully this will turn out like the 2009 bankruptcy where he was forced to resign.

Agreed.

Between elections, I tend to forget it’s there, and then when I remember to look at it or see a link posted, my usual reaction leans toward “well, THAT’s a stretch,” especially when it’s someone other than Nate or Harry Enten posting.

And I don’t think the site even did itself all that proud during the last election season.

Nate did in 2016 though. He was the only major poll tracking site saying that Trump had a real shot at winning the election, and he got a lot of criticism for it. I go there almost every day; today they have a nifty interactive map showing different ways to draw congressional districts and how it would change competitiveness.

Vince McMahon just held a press conference to announce the return of the XFL in 2020. Among the stuff he said (no WWE cross-over, he won’t be a public face for the league), he mentioned that he doesn’t want politics in the league and expects players to stand for the anthem. Not sure he realizes that expecting players to stand is, in itself, a political statement.

I wonder how this plays out, it was obviously rushed back in the 90s, and this time they clearly are giving it enough time to lay proper groundwork. But I can still see it crashing and burning before even the first kick off.

Honestly, Nate did better than anyone else in 2016. Of the aggregators, he was the only one warning that it wasn’t in the bag for Clinton, as well as warning that the absence of good state-level data made prediction of the EC outcome even harder.

Nate gets shit from a lot of people who don’t understand probability and uncertainty. He caught a lot of flack for being such a Debbie Downer. Nobody likes an oracle that tells you what you don’t want to hear.

You know who REALLY didn’t cover himself in glory? Sam Wang.

Michael Moore also had it pegged, I always considered him a bit of a gadfly but he explained months in advance how Trump could and would win: Just by carrying all the states that Romney won in 2012 (a shoo-in) plus the run-down industrial states of PA, MI, WI and OH.

Which he did, heck, as Moore pointed out, Trump did not even need to win Florida.

I asked the same thing earlier. My guess is there’s some aspect of the testimony that will taint some other aspect of the testimony, which will in turn stop Mueller from getting to Babyhands.

That’s the only angle I can think of. He’s setting up to get Trump off on a technicality.

The Dems wanted to turn over the transcripts to Mueller. Making them public gives the wingularity time to spin so fast it’ll create a supernova. But since Trump Jr hasn’t shown he’s any smarter than his dad, my guess is whatever is in that transcript isn’t going to help the Trump cause.

more on that Dayton KY incident:

DAYTON, Ky. — A police officer made a “mistake” when he left a patrol rifle unattended near a sidewalk as police responded to a domestic situation, Dayton Police Chief David Halfhill said.

Dayton and Bellevue police officers responded to the 1000 block of 5th Avenue Wednesday afternoon after a man came out of a home and fired a round into the air, Halfhill said. At some point, an officer from “another agency” set his rifle against a car, according to Dayton police.

Halfhill thanked Dayton residents who brought the incident to the police department’s attention and said the “mistake will be fully investigated.”

“It is unfortunate that this incident happened, but we as police officers are human and do make mistakes,” Halfhill said in a news release.

But who was responsible for leaving the rifle? While Dayton police said an officer from “another agency” left the rifle, Bellevue police said it was a Dayton officer who was responsible.

Rush Limbaugh has discovered that the DEEP STATE SECRET SOCIETY goes deeper and has been around longer than anyone ever suspected.

Rush Limbaugh said he was “not surprised there’s a secret society” going after Trump, and he alleged that a secret society also cooked up fake intelligence to goad George W. Bush into a dumb war. “What if the intel on the war in Iraq was another disinformation campaign to damage another Republican president?” Limbaugh asked.

Exactly! And what if Ted Cruz’s dad, after killing President Kennedy, forged Barack Obama’s birth certificate?

More on the new XFL:

McMahon also said he would preclude any player with a criminal record, which would disqualify former Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

“We are evaluating a player based on many things, including the quality of human being they are,” McMahon said. If you have any sort of criminal record or commit a crime you aren’t playing in this league.”

Interesting ploy since there are guys currently on the WWE roster who had various run ins with the law (including McMahon himself, who was indicted in the early 90s over steroid use in the WWF).

The Fall - There’s a Ghost in My House

They almost got a proper hit with their own tunes around at that time (1987) with “Hit the North”. They did a performance on a short-lived prime time show called The Roxy, which was meant to be a competitor to the main chart based pop show of the time, Top of the Pops, so this is as far they got to being actual pop stars. Bits of the official video are incorporated into the performance and the set.

They’re trying to make a play at being seen as “reasonable,” that they’re not opposed to citizenship for Dreamers, they just need all their demands met. Nothing that passes the Senate will get through the House as long as Ryan continues to insist on following the Hastert child molester rule, and Schumer has already signaled his intention to cave to McConnell on tying the Senate bill to the continuing resolution.

So the odds are pretty good that the Dreamers will get fucked while everyone watches and wrings their hands pretending to give a shit while doing nothing substantive to prevent it.

Emergency health care is a right, but in the long run, it is cheaper to offer people therapy or medication that might cost a few hundred dollars in advance than to wait for them to show up in the ER needing an operation that costs thousands.

Those costs wound up being dumped on insurance customers and driving health care prices up, making it affordable for fewer and fewer, a vicious cycle that ACA was designed to break.

“I want to come home to a home cooked dinner every night at six,” Sykes said, referring to demands he makes of his girlfriend. “One that she fixes and one that I expect one day to have daughters learn to fix after they become traditional homemakers and family wives.”

According to Sykes, feminists push an agenda that they “made up to suit their own nasty snake-filled heads.”

The candidate said that he hoped his daughters do not grow up to be “career obsessed banshees who forgo home life and children and the happiness of family to become nail-biting manophobic hell-bent feminist she devils who shriek from the top of a thousand tall buildings they are [SIC] think they could have leaped in a single bound — had men not been ‘suppressing them.’ It’s just nuts.”

re: #177 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Turns out that a two party system is actually pretty shitty when one party cares more about power than it does about governing.

Also turns out that sometimes none of the choices are good.

It is set to be a representative government. So, it is (and has been) about the people. The people voted for Trump.

The people have been voting this way for years and the candidates we have now are reflected in that. You can see how both parties got to this point all along, especially since the 60s.

As an example: The Clintons. The answer to Reaganism conservatism.

They have not been 100% accepted by the Democratic side of things since Bill was in office. Bill is often criticized for being Republican Lite. That has pissed far left off for some time. Hillary gets that label and the neo-con thing tossed in too.

Bill Clinton, by going to the center, actually got elected president, something that had been a problem for Democrats since Carter.

Bill going center made the GOP go more hard right to fight “Clintonism” and with the help of Fox that worked for them to get “W” Bush.

Bush gets dumped by Obama…but soon after Obama was criticized for being another Clinton. Also the TeaParty is formed.

The Republicans then went whole hog crazy. We get Trump.

Clinton loses and everyone says bad candidate.

Here we are. In a way both parties need those likeable candidates…just as you say. Problem now is The Left is seemingly splitting up at the worst time. The Right will stick together no matter what.

Welcome to America. Turns out a lot of the people get stupid and we then get stupid politics.

If you want a home cooked dinner every night, then find a partner who is willing to devote him/herself to that role. But do not expect to force that anyone else.

A high percentage of respectable quality players at most positions in football are black. Cops and the justice system aren’t especially fair to black men.

Vince is dreaming if he thinks he can cobble a league together without any players who have any kind of record and still get a decent product on the field.

He’s long had a desire to be successful outside of wrestling. He tried it with ill fated World Bodybuilding Federation, he tried it with the XFL the first time around and he tried it with WWE Studios. Aside from the latter, which has been hit and miss, none have found any kind of success.

I’ve been following the WWE for 24 years now. If you know anything about the way Vince does business you know the players are going to wind up on the shit end of this deal.

The most infuriating thing about antivaxx madness is that it exists almost exclusively as a marketing tool of quacks, the “alternate health care” industry in all its massive scope and profitability. It never occurs to the dupes that the profits from this far exceed whatever “big pharma” can make from vaccines, since the latter are a relatively small item in their overall sales.

As the father of a son On The Spectrum, I understand the desire of parents to find someone to blame. It’s part of the grieving process - you have to grieve for the Normal Kid you didn’t get. It sounds strange, and I hope those of you diagnosed as On The Spectrum understand - I would not trade The Older Boy for anything, but you come into parenting with certain expectations. When your child is diagnosed, you have to give those up before you can accept who your child is and help them find their own place in the world.

I suspect that if you don’t go through that grieving process, you remain stuck in needing your kid to be “cured”, and that makes you vulnerable to charlatans, and it makes you need to find someone whose fault it is. It can’t be something as simple as a roll of the genetic dice, because then you wouldn’t be able to reclaim that Normal Kid you were denied. If it’s Mercury, you think maybe you can get it out of their tissues, so you try dangerous and futile shit like chelation.

Japan was the driving force to save the TPP after trump pulled the U.S. out.

Part of Japan’s campaign to the other 10 economies was that the U.S. might someday come back in.

Judging from the initial reactions from the commentariat, the Tokyo elite’s reaction will be “highly cautious optimism” for something that isn’t even in the gestation phase yet.

For Trump supporters that insist that Trump is not racist, there is obviously no such thing as racism. E.g. they would have us believe nonsense like:

Bull Connor turned fire hoses on black protestors on hot days to prevent them from getting heat stroke.

The KKK burns crosses as a way to dispose of excess firewood and to celebrate Christianity.

The US slave trade was beneficial for the captured African slaves because they (sometimes) had the opportunity to be converted to Christianity as a result.

North Carolina tried to change its voting laws recently out of concern for integrity of the vote, instead of to preferentially discourage blacks from voting.

Roy Moore asking for money to fight accuser’s lawsuit

Failed Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore is raising money to pay legal bills stemming from a lawsuit by a woman who accused him of sexual misconduct.

The Moore campaign sent a fundraising email to supporters Wednesday asking for donations to pay his legal expenses related to a suit filed earlier this month by Leigh Corfman.

The email claims Moore has “very minimal” resources after his losing Republican campaign against Democrat Doug Jones. And it says Moore needs as much as $250,000 for a court fight.

The comments are not kind.

Hey Roy, have you reached out to The Foundation for Moral Law yet for donations? Check with Kayla “Tammy-Faye” Moore et al for details on how to apply.

It’ll be interesting how Sanders does a second time around. I think he’ll struggle with more opponents to better make their cases and thus expose some of his problems as a candidate.

And it will interesting to see how Trump handles his next four years in office because Bernie ratfucked the Dems again.

Hopefully he fucks himself before he can fuck the party. I personally think he’s going to wear out his welcome early. But I hear ya. He really fucked things last time.

Well, let’s be fair. Electing a criminal was, in fact, a victory for Conservatives. They have been getting almost everything they ever wanted, or as much of it as they can ram down Congress’s throat until they give up and pass it. And the crooks managing to elect a crook was astonishing in its audacity and, frankly, the mere fact of its success.

As I have been saying since day one, just like Trump, Bernie is a Russian asset, except promoting ideas on the left, rather than right. He is just as worthless when it comes to minority issues, immigration issues, and probably women’s issues.

Portly Pinochet stated three reasons for firing Mueller.

First, he claimed that a dispute years ago over fees at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., had prompted Mr. Mueller, the F.B.I. director at the time, to resign his membership. The president also said Mr. Mueller could not be impartial because he had most recently worked for the law firm that previously represented the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Finally, the president said, Mr. Mueller had been interviewed to return as the F.B.I. director the day before he was appointed special counsel in May.

Just think how different our world would be if only Hitler had gotten accepted into art school in Austria, then think how much better things would be now if Steven Miller had been born earlier and gotten the part that was made for him in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Firing over a golf club petty grievance. Still is wild though. I’ve worked in Sterling before. Know it fairly well.

Shit even my friends who love wrestling know this is unlikely to replace the NFL. McMahon is obviously savvy but the NFL has spent years building its brand.

The USFL actually came close enough to pulling it off.

Who fucked it up?

Yep…..TRUMP…..
