Houston megachurch pastor, accomplice bilked investors out of more than $1M: Feds

Of course. That’s what they do. All tax free, too, thanks to the US taxpayer.

SHREVEPORT, La. — A federal grand jury has indicted a Houston Texas pastor and a Louisiana financial planner with bilking investors out of more than $1 million.

U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook said in a news release Thursday that a 13-count indictment was handed up against 64-year-old Kirbyjon Caldwell, of Houston, and 55-year-old Gregory Alan Smith, of Shreveport. They’re accused of wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy to commit those two offenses.

According to the indictment, Caldwell used his influence as pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church, a prominent Houston church, and Smith used his influence as operator and manager of Smith Financial Group LLC, in Shreveport, to lure investors to pay more than $1 million for Historical Chinese bonds that aren’t recognized by China’s current government and have no investment value.

Praise Jebus!

I want to be shocked but…this is almost how it goes in political media as standard operating practice: GOPer/conservative makes claim, gets taken at face value with no verification and gets repeated verbatim even after he’s been debunked.

Liberal makes verifiable claim, gets treated like a liar from the start and has to give proof in triplicate just to upgrade his claim to ‘both sides same thing’ in the media.

A good sci-fi flick. I’m not going to say it’s the greatest Spielberg film ever, but it’s a solid and entertaining entry in his repertoire.

And I’d imagine that a big part of the film’s $175,000,000 budget, aside from CGI, was spent on lawyer’s fees getting the rights to intellectual properties such as Freddy Krueger, Chucky, the Iron Giant, Gundam, Kaneda’s motorcycle from Akira, etc.

Spielberg pulled it off.

There’s a sequence in the film that’s a brilliant homage to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining - it’s probably the best bit in the whole film, and I was both awed at how well it was done and laughing most of the way through that bit because they also threw in elements of satirical humor/parody. Hell, they even used the original theme music by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind…..a nice little touch.

The wingnuts are so desperate that they’re looking for any angle they can to portray the victims as responsible for the shooting, even to making up this bullshit narrative about Cruz being the victim of bullying when all reports are that hew as a violent little shit who lashed out at anyone, even those who were trying to be nice to him.

They know that they are good people and therefore if they do anything wrong it’s because they are the victims.

Citizen K  Mar 30, 2018 • 1:56:35pm

Oh hey…what do you know, the shit about immigrants bringing in crime and violence is bullshit. What a surprise…

The Myth of the Criminal Immigrant

The Trump administration’s first year of immigration policy has relied on claims that immigrants bring crime into America. President Trump’s latest target is sanctuary cities.

“Every day, sanctuary cities release illegal immigrants, drug dealers, traffickers, gang members back into our communities,” he said last week. “They’re safe havens for just some terrible people.”

As of 2017, according to Gallup polls, almost half of Americans agreed that immigrants make crime worse. But is it true that immigration drives crime? Many studies have shown that it does not.

[…]

According to data from the study, a large majority of the areas have many more immigrants today than they did in 1980 and fewer violent crimes. The Marshall Project extended the study’s data up to 2016, showing that crime fell more often than it rose even as immigrant populations grew almost across the board.

In 136 metro areas, almost 70 percent of those studied, the immigrant population increased between 1980 and 2016 while crime stayed stable or fell. The number of areas where crime and immigration both increased was much lower — 54 areas, slightly more than a quarter of the total. The 10 places with the largest increases in immigrants all had lower levels of crime in 2016 than in 1980.

And yet the argument that immigrants bring crime into America has driven many of the policies enacted or proposed by the administration so far: restrictions to entry, travel and visas; heightened border enforcement; plans for a wall along the border with Mexico. This month, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against California in response to the state’s restrictions on local police to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants charged with crimes. On Tuesday, California’s Orange County signed on in support of that suit. But while the immigrant population in the county has more than doubled since 1980, overall violent crime has decreased by more than 50 percent.

Tom Fucking Nichols is whinging on about Hillary Clinton ‘refusing to yield the stage’, and I gotta wonder - how much farther from the stage can she get?

She wrote a book, which was well received, and did a book tour which all authors do. Prior to that, she was largely absent from public notice.

She’s given a few paid speeches, sent a few tweets. She’s hasn’t gone on TV, and certainly doesn’t have a permanent chair on the Sunday Shows, like one former POW turned GOP Senator and failed Presidential candidate. Hell’s bells - even Rick Santorum, who LOST HIS RACE FOR REELECTION TO THE SENATE, and lost two successive GOP Presidential Primaries, keeps going on TV.

For shit’s sake, Nichols has a more prominent profile these days, and he’s just a pompous windbag.

It’s a good film and I think a good adaptation of the book. But I couldn’t help but feel, after leaving the theater, that Spielberg had kept to his style of changing the base material to give the audience a happy ending.

So…….just got back from seeing Ready Player One.

I started to read the book and realized that I had no interest in the lost pop culture of the 80’s…

It’s a simple solution: If these jackholes don’t want her on the stage, then they need to stop dragging her up there so they can continuing flogging her. But they won’t do that because it’s just easier for them to blame her than to address issues like the party’s mistake of allowing a non-party member to bullshit his way into the primaries.

The funny thing is, looking at Nichols from the outside, the man is so bereft of self awareness it’s a wonder he doesn’t walk into the furniture.

He talks about how Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Elizabeth Warren are the GOP’s secret weapon, and of course he hates them, too, but god forbid you call him sexist! I mean, it would be different if he said something like ‘The reason these women are a problem for Democrats is because the WWC folks they need to win are by and large sexist and hate powerful, opinionated women who are not deferential to men’, but no. He goes right along with it, apparently blissfully unaware.

And he still believes the GOP is the party of who he wants to believe Reagan was, not the party that elected Reagan because he appealed to the same white resentment as Trump, but in dog whistles instead of foghorns.

And while railing against everyone thinking of themselves as expert in every field, he acts as if his opinions on topics outside his relatively narrow professional focus are not just some clown’s opinion, of no special merit.

I guess he bothers me because he comes part of the way - he has been consistently anti-Trump and deplores his party’s complicity in the corruption and incompetence. But then he stops. And remains mired in the worst parts of upper crust Conservatism.

It’s frustrating, because watching it is like arguing with otherwise intelligent Creationists, where the other person sees, understands, and accepts part of your argument, but as soon as you try to build on that, they slide back into their dogma.

The only thing they really want to hear from her is taking total blame for losing to Trump. They want her to absolve them of all their sins so they can go forward believing that nothing they did led to Trump’s election. One of my favorite things about immigration is something Benjamin Franklin wrote in 1750 about all the German immigrants in Pennsylvania.

Few of their children in the Country learn English; they import many Books from Germany; and of the six printing houses in the Province, two are entirely German, two half German half English, and but two entirely English; They have one German News-paper, and one half German. Advertisements intended to be general are now printed in Dutch and English; the Signs in our Streets have inscriptions in both languages, and in some places only German: They begin of late to make all their Bonds and other legal Writings in their own Language, which (though I think it ought not to be) are allowed good in our Courts, where the German Business so encreases that there is continual need of Interpreters; and I suppose in a few years they will be also necessary in the Assembly, to tell one half of our Legislators what the other half say;

Before there was even an America, there was ‘Othering’ of immigrants.

I am a certified car fanatic. One thing I would hope is the car manufacturers ignoring it for both environmental and business reasons.

America is not the only country that has clean car emission standards. The EU does too. So hopefully the cars will be built to make the tougher standards and America gets them because almost all cars are world cars now and it is cheaper to build them all the same.

The far-left’s been nursing a grudge since Bill’s win in ‘92 because they blamed him (and still blame him today) for the party backing away from the “progressive” views that defined it through the 70s and 80s.

That is for sure. I heard those kind of comments in 2016 too. But since we were talking about Hillary I concentrated on her. They both get to share in each others political mud thrown at them. And they both get to deal with it.

I’d love to be able to talk to them to get a feel for how they think about all that baggage. I bet they have some wickedly funny stories and comments on it all.

Psst. I booked a good video job for next week. As a result I have a rented 135mm tilt shift lens. It’s a trip to push the focal plane around like that. Stills are pretty cool, video is not really your thing but using the shift to keep the focus on an object moving in the frame is quite a striking look.

Ben’s white-knighting of Laura sounds more like one bully backing up another, insisting that because she said she’s “sorry,” the victim of the bullying should just let it go and let her find another victim for awhile. One thing that always gets bullies angry is when there are consequences to their actions that they can’t just make go away with a few empty words.

Ben just got a radio show on WABC.

re: #131 Citizen K

That’s the frustrating thing: outside of a handful, most of those Never Trumpers, and a non-insignificant part of the lefter-than-thou folk too, are theoretically anti-Trump, but treat the Democrats and especially Hillary as the ‘real’ and far more pressing threat to them. They want to tear down the Dem party before even daring to try and hold Trump accountable.

Yep. In that way, I find the “Never Trumpers” more frustrating than the the Trumpers because the Never Trumpers are in denial about how Trump was someone palatable to their ideology and movement. Shapiro is someone especially guilty of that as is Tom Nichols and others.

Honestly, I think the kids are doing a great job. They’re not getting riled by the attacks on them. What has always frustrated me from gun advocates in the wake of these shootings is quite honestly how they want to blame anything but guns. I’ll see them blaming video games, music, movies, the lack of prayer, single mothers but nope can’t talk about easy access to weapons or how the weapon used can kill lots of people in a short amount of time. I don’t think I’ve seen much sympathy at all from the NRA directed at the Parkland Kids. Indeed, I’ve seen the total opposite. Make no mistake about it, the NRA is a shitty organization run by even more shitty people.

It’s interesting to me that you almost never, if ever, see columns from liberal pundits writing articles whining about boycotts against other liberal pundits or causes (and this is despite conservatives launching boycotts at the drop of a hat). I think it’s for a few reasons: 1) liberal pundits aren’t, generally speaking, objectively awful and/or stupid people and 2) conservatives boycott issues based on views from the ‘50’s (doesn’t matter the century)…like General Mills showing an interracial couple in a cheerios commercial or Disney having transgender bathrooms.

They have to resort to whining because our boycotts are actually effective and theirs amount to old people yelling at clouds.

3.) Liberal pundits are generally wusses with their own focused causes and will go out of their way to make sure that they don’t stomp on their own cause by sticking up for another righteous cause.

That is why conservatives have always won, they focus, destroy and move on to the next faux outrage.

This looks interesting. Could be a lot of fun. A play acted out in a record store.

Minneapolis Musical Theatre’s High Fidelity May 4-6, 11-13 and 18-20, 2018

We are excited to host the Minneapolis Musical Theatre’s unique production of High Fidelity in the store over three weekends in May. This immersive theater experience, where audience members will be inside a real record store with the production surrounding them, is a first for both Minneapolis Musical Theatre and the Electric Fetus.

The production is designed as a fun and interactive experience, where audience members will be patrons in the record store, moving throughout the venue and on their feet during the entire performance.

There is no traditional theatre seating available. Please note: we do anticipate having limited seating available only for patrons with special accessibility needs. Any patrons with special needs may contact MMT at info@aboutmmt.org.

CLICK HERE for more information on the performance and tickets. (Tickets are not available in the store).

Your critical-thinking-challenged friend? Just unfollow him already. Sounds like he *never* posts anything worth seeing.

That is one of many reasons why I will give more money to PBS. At least when Suze Orman is talking solid financial advice comes out of her mouth.

The RepubliKKKlan Bullshit Machine has been cranked up to 11 repeating that Emma bullied Cruz and Very Naughty words come out of David’s mouth.

Oh and now they are passing around possibly faked Tweets and Facebook entries slandering Stephon Clark which denigrate women.

No doubt your Friendly Neighborhood SincLIAR station will pass these lies along!

It’s from an out of context quote- “You didn’t know this kid.”

If ever there was a time to consider the source and just dismiss that garbage out of hand, this is it. Don’t let it get ya down.

Well, next time you see him in person, you could leave a print-out of this article in a place where he can’t help but see it…or if you’re feeling especially brave, read it aloud and watch his reaction (I suspect it’s much easier to ignore/dismiss something you see online as opposed to quite literally in your face)

Yep I read that. Great idea and it was a good read. It sucks man because he’s growing more pathetically wingnutty.

Beauty Break

I caught this testing a lens tonight. I like how creamy the soft bg is against the extra sharp petals. It’s subtle but the lens is shifted to make the focus extremely specific.
