It works the other way. We could halve the trade deficit with a serious recession.

“…In past instances, top advisers, including Sanders and former communications director Hope Hicks, would try to talk Trump out of taking action, according to officials with knowledge of the conversations. They argued that doing so would only give more attention to the questions he did not like and suggested that if he did not want to answer those questions, he should simply ignore them.”

It’s still hard to fathom the depth of Trump’s sheer stupidity about people.

What I don’t like is how defensive and knee-jerk Muslims in France are getting about this. They need to face the reality that anti-Semitism is an unfortunate reality among certain French Muslims and this needs to be combated. This hostility was never based on centuries, but purely a modern-day consequence and they need to combat this without crying Islamophobia all the time.

Yes, French Muslims are discriminated against in the country and I surely hope the recent World Cup win will turn the tide. But I also wish for the illness of anti-Semitism among them to go away for good. What happened in Israel/Palestine does NOT justify prejudiced views against Jews whatsoever.

re: #6 Eclectic Cyborg

Wait, wouldn’t reducing trade deficits cause a reduction in GDP in the long term?

For a manufacturing economy, reducing trade deficits is very bad, it means you’re selling less of the things you’re making. But we are not a manufacturing economy, we are a service based economy (manufacturing makes up an important part of our economy, but our economy is driven much more by service jobs than by manufacturing jobs). Now, increasing manufacturing (and exporting more manufactured goods) could be a good thing, if we had higher unemployment - it would mean more people working, and that would mean a more robust economy. Unfortunately, we apparently are at a point where we have a jobs surplus - as in we have more jobs than we have workers (at least anecdotally, I’m seeing this in commercial tenant improvement construction where everyone is stretched thin and can’t seem to find new hires). So, in our current economy, reducing trade deficits would be a very bad thing because the only feasible way to do it would be to reduce our imports, thereby reducing supply of goods, which typically leads to inflation, which typically leads to people being pissed the fuck off.

You have to be at least 30 to be a US Senator, realistically, you’re going to be in your 40s or 50s when you first become a Senator, so a member of the Senate in 1965 would have been born (at the latest) in 1925. So he’s basically talking about people who would be over 100 years old today. You know, dead people, rather than the people alive today.

Makes me wished the Japanese would have took over America in the 1980s.

Only then would high speed rail in this country would have been a reality lol

I love Japan’s transportation system, but it came with the kind of costs I was thinking of in the “earmarks with a vengeance” comment. The cost of the Jōetsu shinkansen line probably wasn’t justified considering population and needs, but Tanaka Kakuei was from Niigata, so it got done. And there are a couple of impressive highways in Hokkaido that see little traffic. Projects like these have been part of what keeps the LDP and its remnants in power. Maybe it’s a good thing, I don’t know. On the one hand, it (subsidies and pork barrel investments) keeps rural areas from descending into complete abject poverty; on the other hand, it does nothing to mitigate the flow of young Japanese from rural areas to the big urban areas where jobs are.

So I guess I’m saying that Americans would have to be softened up to accept that losses in some areas would be made up for in the high-traffic corridors.

I hope it happens in some form. We need a more robust rail system that favors human traffic.

(Funny side note: I was just given a “soft” offering of a job teaching Japanese economic history at a university in western Japan in their new English-only International Studies division. I protested that I don’t really do economic history; my Japanese friend said, “I have to teach law in English and I barely speak English; you’ll be ok.” It would be so great as a visiting job, but I can’t bank my career on Japanese university standards.)

Public education’s purpose (I guess) is to make an educated, marketable, thinking and reasonably patriotic populace, that has been gutted and now we have blithering morons quoting other blithering morons and those blithering morons are being accepted as normal, non-crazy, sources.

People are getting and are proud to proclaim that they got their “real” education from YouTube. These people that I have run into typically have jobs that are on the lower level of the pay scale but they vote and they will happily vote against anything that will help them out if their echo chamber tells them too.

A nation of morons doesn’t help anyone but the 1% and the arc history of that doesn’t bode well.

What is the historical context for dealing with the crazy ass Alex Jones types?

The internet really has changed everything? In the past they would send out mimeographed flyers?

How would nutcases like Jones get a foothold in American discourse without starting a religion? Buckley, Heritage Foundation? John Birch Society was the looniest that got somewhat accepted and the NRA was the sanest that got hijacked?

How do we deal with the InfoWars types who used to get laughed at when their audience was the general populous as opposed to the segregated internets?

Also, thoughts and prayers for Sweden for the weekend and next week, that the expected rainfall (and T-storms) don’t exacerbate the fires but actually helps to dampen them down to manageable. Head of Rescue services at the Älvdalen fire says it’s a fateful weekend :(

Like slavery, this will only be settled by force. In a massive and appalling example of the Dunning-Kruger Effect, the right wing is hell-bent on such a solution. They have stopped even pretending to seek any other outcome. The Russians and other enemies are glad to incite them every step of the way, not because they have any respect for the idiot/theocrat agenda, but to weaken the United States.

Welcome to 2018, where shit spews out at such a furious rate that there’s not much left when Friday comes around. What used to be dropped late on Fridays to cause a stir over the weekend now seems to drop whenever the fuck it likes. Our political system seems to be suffering from incontinence.

Let’s also not forget that most of what goes on daily without comment would have caused days or weeks of controversy under a Democrat, but under a Republican is treated as “business as usual.”

Can you imagine how much airtime Faux alone would devote to the hundreds of children separated from their parents if Hillary was in office?

abc.net.au

US Defence Secretary James Mattis has described reports that America is preparing to strike Iran as “fiction”.
Senior figures in the Turnbull Government told the ABC they believe the United States is prepared to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities, perhaps as early as next month, and that Australia was poised to help identify possible targets.
Mr Mattis dismissed the reports at a press conference on Friday.
I have no idea where the Australian news people got that information,” he said.

(my bold)

Well most people got the information/idea from the president* of the United States. Is Mattis telling us to ignore anything trump says? It’s weird, but some people take the president* at his word & believe what he says - same as they do with other world leaders.

As for Australia helping out - hopefully that would mean a change of government very quickly. trump has little, if any support from most Australians.

That’s obviously a trick question, since Trump is a lot fatter now than when that photo was taken.

For instance, Trump is so fat that his cereal bowl comes with a lifeguard. Trump is so fat he has to put his belt on with a boomerang. Trump is so fat his staff ran around him once and got hopelessly lost. (Though in their defense they were hopelessly lost anyway.)

On the plus side, he didn’t pull out the ol’ People Who Vaccinate are Morons shtick.

This idea is so damn annoying tho! The only way I would think about watching is if he repeatedly gets dunked on by the local talent like in this old classic clip.

cooking competition shows are pointless. Even if the judges aren’t just lying for the camera, we can’t possibly learn anything from them. The contestants are critiqued for how their entry smells, how it tastes, how it feels. But the audience can’t smell it or taste it or feel it.

That’s what I love about Project Runway. They’re judged for how it looks, and we can play along. When Zach or Nina or Heidi points to a part of it and says why we should love or hate this element… we can see exactly what they’re talking about.

I still love cooking competition shows. I love food and cooking as art and process and social thingy. I learn a lot and the shows can be hella entertaining just like PR.
I don’t know that I’d suggest food judges are playing to the tele and maybe lying without submitting that PR judges could be doing the same. It’s all heavily curated for their “reality” TV genre.
