Samantha Bee: Is What We’re Living Through Like Watergate, or Is It Definitely Way Uglier?
Other than making every single scandal have to end in “-gate,” what actually was Watergate? And has it been rebooted?
Other than making every single scandal have to end in “-gate,” what actually was Watergate? And has it been rebooted?
The Trump crime family is way uglier.
However, I’ll point out that leading up to Watergate, the 1960’s, was full of ugliness in the American public sphere.
And there goes @realDonaldTrump again, ranting insanely about the media like a goddamned skipping record.

And that is in public. I can imagine how much he acts like a spoiled rotten two-year throwing a tantrum in The White House.

If he wants to make the argument that the apparent collapse of the Democratic Party happened under Obama, there’s a fair criticism there. And as the effective leader of the party, he probably bears some responsibility for that. Billy Graham died earlier this year and this event was the trigger for the Nixon Library to release a long-suppressed (censored) passage of a conversation Graham had with Nixon on February 1, 1972. It is as ugly as you thought it might be.
During “the Latter Days,” Graham is heard to say, Jews will be divided into the “Remnant of God’s People” and “the Synagogue of Satan.” The second group consists of those Jews in league with the devil, Graham says, who “have a strange brilliance about them” and are behind “all your religious deceptions.”
Mike Hertenstein, a writer who helped take down fake warlock Mike Warnke in the early 1990s, is the author of this very long article. He doesn’t just talk about the 1972 conversation. He fits it within the context of Graham’s life, within how Jews were seen during the period, how that view shifted with World War II, the Holocaust and the Catholic Church’s partial walkback of its longtime anti-Semitism with Nostra Aetate.
If you’re evangelical, have an evangelical background, or still have any lingering respect for Billy Graham, this article is just going to torpedo it to bits. Billy Graham was as awful as the guys on Twitter today who claim “the Jews” own all of media.

You’d not really be paying “double” for a smart TV these days, it’s now the default option; plain old TVs (especially large ones) are going the way of the dodo. TCL (who has sets with Roku functionality built-in) and Vizio (who tends to keep their TV apps updated fairly well) are pretty good and usually very reasonably priced.

I want to be clear, I don’t think he bears the majority of blame for the current state of the party. And based on what we’ve seen since 2016, I think the Democratic Party is not really in the wilderness in the way that it is often portrayed.
But I think Obama probably didn’t pay enough attention to building the party as he could have. The DNC definitely did not do enough to train and recruit candidates. The DNC focused too much on electability, and often ended up with bad candidates. This is one of those things where the head of the party might not have been directly involved, but could have set the direction better.

Yeah, that’s not to say that plain old TVs aren’t still out there or that you can’t get a good deal on them, but by the time you get one and decide to add a Roku, Apple TV, or other set-top box to give you app capability (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, all of the different broadcast and cable channel apps, etc.), you could have gotten a smart TV to do pretty the same thing in one package. Me, though, I don’t mind having the separate set-top box, because I can upgrade it anytime, as opposed to the whole set; the media setup in my house is complicated.
What size are you looking for?

Also what they call shadowbanning is really just the quality filter kicking in. Uncheck the filter in the notifications setting and then uncheck “hide sensitive content” and “remove blocked and muted accounts from search results” in the Privacy and Safety setting and they should show up.
Basically Twitter’s algorithm has just decided that their content is trash but the Twitter board won’t ban them outright because that would damage the stock price.

Howard Dean was DNC chair from 2005 through 2009. He had HUUUGGE success with his 50-state strategy. That’s why the Dems had so many seats (federal and state) when Obama took office. Then it was Tim Kaine from 2009 to early 2011; the 2010 midterms were a debacle, that’s why he was replaced.
Donna Brazile was briefly chair during 2011 (bad job, needed replacing), then
Debbie Wasserman Schultz from 2011 until just before the 2016 convention. She did a HORRIBLE job. They should have never had a sitting member of congress in that job to begin with, but even besides that handicap she was just bad at it.
The President, if he cares to make an issue of it, gets to choose the party chair. He allowed incompetents to sit in that seat and do nothing useful. That’s on him.

All of this seems like a muddled, confused way to avoid making any value judgments about people’s opinions, ever, even if they’re deranged and dangerous opinions. Instead of stepping up and accepting that responsibility, Twitter increasingly relies on half-baked ill-considered software algorithms and untrained interns that just try to hide the problems instead of doing anything effective.
Kind of ironic that Twitter’s called “social media,” when they have no detectable sense of social responsibility.

If you get a 32” or 40” 1080p NON-smart TV with inputs that include a 15pin VGA port (“PC input”) you can use it also as generic monitor for a PC or laptop, at a bargain price. A vga cable will cost you ~5 to 15usd. I use a 4-way IOGear KVM to use 1kbd, 1mouse, and 1monitor(TV) with up to 4pc’s at 1 location. A 2nd 4-way KVM lets me switch among 7 PCs.
A smart TV is likely to compromise your privacy (ie, viewing habits) and if used as a PC display, may compromise your computer/network security also. (Most will auto-connect to ANY available open wifi.)

I have my older Mac Mini hooked up to my Sony Smart TV using it as a video monitor via HDMI cable. However it doesn’t transmit sound on the HDMI jack so I have to plug into a Beats speaker when I stream video (mainly Sling TV) on my MacMini.
Frustrating that my old Mini can’t upgrade to OS 12. And it’s been years since Apple “upgraded” the Mini with an inferior chip…

Please understand, there are consequences when people cross our Border illegally, whether they have children or not - and many are just using children for their own sinister purposes. Congress must act on fixing the DUMBEST & WORST immigration laws anywhere in the world! Vote “R”

It’s not the movie-movie — it’s a 40th-anniversary documentary about the movie. Which includes a certain amount of interviews with Woodward/Bernstein, and archival news footage, but also Redford and Hoffman and so on.

Well, Indiana was headquarters of the rejuvenated KKK in the 1920s and 1930s, filled with “sundown towns,” and probably has more Confederate flags per capita than anywhere in the south. But, yeah, I’d still say both

I sort of remember Rachel talking about MSNBC doing this. She said it was to be educational and because of some of the parallels and the like.
Maybe it is also a way to remind people the president can be removed.

our mistake
Just back from the Ronald Reagan library. Kinda blew through to spend time with Ghengis. I learned something really interesting. The worlds greatest conqueror was in some ways more progressive than our current Tyrant in Chief. All the empires religions were okay. Women could fight in combat. Adultery was penalized by death however. Interesting in a polygamous structure. The steel swords were fascinating. One had parts from Japan, Mongolia, but a true Damascus blade fro the middle east. Indian gemstones in the hilt. It’s original owner is not known but I think had to be someone rich and or powerful.
Two things got me. One was a piece of the WTC iron structure from 9-11. That was hard to see up close. Evert little detail just impressed itself on me, bent rivets, scrapes, patina. I was a bit lightheaded for a minute. Walking away I kept seeing falling man in my mind.
On the way out stopped by the Reagans grave. I realize he is a despised man. But what he represented was so kind compared to what we have now. For all his ideological and policy wrongs, he was a far better man than Donald Trump.
I could not bring myself to get within earshot of Sean Spicer who is there for a book signing. He sullies the place with every freaking step.

Sorry, but, no he was worse. No where near as stupid and simply hid his hatreds behind a “gee wiz” & “oh shucks” pretense of geniality. If he wasn’t as blatant about his racism and hate, it was only that he had better script writers and handlers.
Look to his speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi and his reaction to the Black Panthers open carrying for the real Reagan. Look to the horrors he cheerfully inflicted upon Central America, financed by treasonous sales to Iran.
If there is a hell, he is in it as certainly as Thatcher, Pinochet, Franco, Mussolini, Stalin & Hitler.

242 Marines killed in Lebanon and Brave Sir Pruneface Cut and run.
He let his pals loot and destroy the Savings and Loans.
He opened the red ink floodgates with the Kemp-Roth Deficit Increase.
He looked the other way when Oliver North let Blandon flood South Central LA with crack Contra cocaine.
He broke the union movement in this country starting with firing the air traffic controllers.
His Pulpit Pimp Pals kissed his ass while he NEVER stepped foot in a church while he was President and his wife’s astrologer was calling the shots for him.

Yes he did.
Take a peek at civilian casualties now that Trump loosened up the rules designed to reduce the carnage of innocents. That’s not somebody else, as in foreign death squads. That’s us directly. If we are not there yet, just wait a minute.
Middle East civilian deaths have soared under Trump. And the media mostly shrug.
2017 was the deadliest year for civilian casualties in Iraq and Syria, with as many as 6,000 people killed in strikes conducted by the U.S.-led coalition, according to the watchdog group Airwars.

Watergate was more like a micro-tRump. To tell the truth, it was only about a milli-Nixon, but like Al Capone, you get them on what you can.
In 1968, there was a popular song that I decided I never needed to hear again. Yesterday, I heard it again, being performed live by a guy who probably had not been born yet in 1968.
50 years. Not bad, but if it’s another 50 before I hear it again, it will be too soon. And I will be too old to hear it, so that will work out.

I’ve been following Succession… I hate every single character. These are vile people. All of them. I’m only watching to see which of them (how many of them) have horrible things happen to them.
re: #24 KGxvi
There’s a real stupidity in this when you consider the fact that under normal circumstances, this is exactly what a former president and first lady should be doing… being private citizens. Former presidents, especially those who are barred from running again due to term limits, shouldn’t be at the center of American politics.
If he wants to make the argument that the apparent collapse of the Democratic Party happened under Obama, there’s a fair criticism there. They lost the House, they lost a near filibuster proof majority in the Senate, they lost a ton of governors’ offices and state legislative seats during the Obama years. And as the effective leader of the party, he probably bears some responsibility for that. But that’s is an argument that takes time and effort and research… it’s so much easier to hit the world with an emoticon
The media supporting racism had a massive impact during those years. The way they attacked health care was impossible to believe - if I had not seen it.
The way the GOP obstructed the government, demanded a reduction in expenditure - only to forget the word deficit the minute they gained power - was not unbelievable - it is how the GOP has always behaved. Anyone heard a word in the media about deficits for the past few months? Did anyone see a democrat on any of the Sunday news shows post 2009? John McCain, the loser had a permanent position on those shows, the dems were never asked, and were too busy working to see what was happening via the media.

Jr’s emails, the bogus statement about the meeting crafted aboard Airforce One, the false denial by the White House that Trump was involved in crafting the statement, the second false story that he was obliquely consulted but didn’t actually write it, and the final admission that he dictated the whole damned thing.

According to conservatives though, California is a hellscape of high taxes, power drunk gays, and rapacious gangs and Scandinavia is a terrorist-ridden socialist death camp.
And according to my brother, California residents and businesses are all fleeing to the paradise of Texas with its low taxes. It’s a nightmare out there on the West Coast with homeless wandering the streets of San Francisco. Texas is number one in oil and gas production because if there is one thing this world needs it’s greater use of carbon based fuels!

The primary reason for the disastrous policy in Iraq post invasion is that ideologues were selected to manage Iraq instead of experts who were familiar with its history and culture. Now it is the United States that is the victim of similar ideologues — and the results are equally ugly.

We’ve had a lot of “the FBI and our IC are above biases and work for the interest of all Americans” lately with the Peter Strzok hearings, the Comey stuff, etc. But tonight’s refresher on Watergate combined with what we know about how they handled the Russian attacks reminded me of two things tonight: the modern GOP firmly believes that they have a divine right to rule and any and everything—legal and illegal—they can do to preserve power is justified; and many in IC, try as they might to be above politics, are fundamentally aligned with conservative values and will eye progressives with skepticism while giving conservatives the benefit of the doubt. That hasn’t changed since WWII.
I’m grateful for those in the IC who do great work. I’m just noting a general tendency.

I had somehow forgotten since I first saw that movie; it’s 2-1/2 hours of detailed day-to-day storytelling of the six months from the break-in to the inauguration… then the next year and a half is condensed into a 3-minute montage of opening lines of stories of new developments until the resignation.
I love that a key early development that kept the story going was a white house fuck-up…

According to White House personnel, Hunt definitely works there as a consultant for Colson. But when I called the White House Press office, they said he hadn’t worked there for three months. Then the P.R. guy said the weirdest thing to me.

The U.S. housing market — particularly in cutthroat areas like Seattle, Silicon Valley and Austin, Texas — appears to be headed for the broadest slowdown in years. Ginsburg was speaking in Manhattan following the performance of a play about the late Justice Antonin Scalia when she made the estimate.

Imagine arguing that we should change the name of Washington, DC right now because he had slaves.
One of my grandmothers I was around fairly often. Her own grandfather was a Union cavalry soldier during the war, brought his own horse. She had to know him, as they lived only a few miles from her when she was growing up. Though he died when my grandmother was a teenager, still, she knew him during her first 16 years.
Yet, my grandmother never told me any war stories, though she was surrounded by veterans growing up.
The Civil War just had no meaning to her, as far as I can tell. It’s not as if she ignored politics - I remember my mother helping her fill out a mail-ballot when she was older.l
Symbols are important to us humans. Yet, at some point, the past simply has to lay in the grave.
In doing genealogy it is a strange thing I come across, people who still want to hide what their ancestors (not parents, but people long dead) did.

Neo-Confederacy is about justifying other things than the CSA.
They’re not neo Confederates.
They’re white supremacists. They’re white nationalists.
They’re goddamned Nazis.
Start identifying them as such because the romanticism associated with the Confederacy is sickening and obscures the intentions/goals.
They aren’t for states rights or romanticize the side that lost the War of Southern Insurrection (which they love to call the war of Northern Aggression).
They’re for making sure that minorities are put back in their place.
Trump gave them the green light at the highest level. That signaling included equating goddamned Nazis with the people protesting them at Charlottesville - even after a goddamned Nazi drove his car through a crowd and murdered a protester.
So, when someone like Pence says that Nazi graffiti found in Indiana is reprehensible, it’s hard to take him seriously - because he was part of the admin that condoned violence by Nazis operating here in the US.

I still think a big way to get rid of his mystique is to go at him from the left. I always go after him for his immigration record that won Steve King’s praise no less and him voting to allow guns on Amtrak and his two face bullshit about how gun manufacturers shouldn’t be accountable while holding other businesses to a different standard.
That’s a bit like asking how Donald Trump has managed to become the leader of a cult that seems that it would slavishly die to protect his power. Both men are appealing to a very real force in American politics, which is white resentment that manifests in different ways up and down the political spectrum. In the far-left, it’s a growing perception that policies and ideas that appeal to them (“free” healthcare and college) have taken a backseat to “identity politics.” That the DNC as a party moderated its beliefs and moved away from candidates like McCarthy, McGovern, and Mondale in order to appeal to minority voters rather than the “working class” that they (somehow) believe the party was built around rather than adopted.
It’s the same selfish attitude that drives a lot of support for men like Trump, just with a different set of excuses.

A lot of them sincerely believe in what he called for in his campaign. My wife worked for his campaign early on helping with canvassing so I got to visit local headquarters and attend an after-rally event just for campaign workers where BS and Brother Cornell showed up for a few minutes. His supporters ranged from stereotypical Bernie-bros to many retirees. My wife’s “handler,” if you will, was a young Hispanic woman from AZ getting a law degree—first legal American in her family. Her issue was education/fairness. Seeing them in action and their fervor, it’s easy to understand how they felt abused by Clinton campaign, even if not grounded in reality. His resume never came up. Just the hope for “socialist” causes like affordable (free) university education and single-payer health care. That was about it. No questions ever asked about foreign policy or BLM or those kinds of things. I think Cornell and Killer Mike helped to obfuscate his lack of interest there.

And in local news…Trump’s Shadow Mike Pence is landing in a little while in Columbus and then being driven to Newark Ohio for a rally for Troy Balderson to endorse him for the Ohio District 12 Congressional special race to fill the seat of resigning Republican Pat Tiberi.
Newark can be just a bit “red” if you know what I mean…so it is safe territory for Mikey to spew some hate toward Democrats.
I hope there is some resistance there, but knowing Newark, they will do everything to keep them quiet. But since it is only a 40 minute drive from Columbus, there might be a decent turnout of protesters.

It was a variant of the “Green Lantern effect” BS, the idea that Obama “could have done what he wanted,” but didn’t because he wasn’t really a “true progressive” and that it showed by how he had gone for things he could actually accomplish rather than turning the US into a socialist utopia. The ur example being that he hadn’t pushed for a single-payer healthcare system when even the more liberal of Dems were on the fence about such and Joe “The Senator from Aetna” Lieberman made it clear he’d scuttle the whole deal if the public option wasn’t nixed from the draft proposal.

They just don’t appreciate what Obama did accomplish and it pisses me off. And while I appreciate young people getting involved, there is a certain arrogance and dismissiveness to people who have been playing the game a long time.

It’s a level of maturity and pragmatism that Bros generally tend to lack, an idea that you take the victories you can actually achieve rather than keep pushing for the unattainable and then cursing everyone around for constant failure. For the younger crowd, it’s a lack of practical experience that leads them to believe that sudden change is totally possible. And for the older crowd, it’s the refusal to accept that the rapid social progress of their youth (Civil Rights Era) was a unique set of circumstances and America is not the pressure-cooker necessary to lead to spontaneous and radical changes.

re: #328 Targetpractice
I don’t think that really explains it, mainly because Bernie supporters skew so young. They don’t remember those earlier days, and what they resent is the rough deal they’re getting now.
re: #333 ObserverArt
I don’t know about others, but I sure as hell would like to know how much he was influenced by Russians, either directly and knowingly, or unknowingly but willing to use it to his advantage.
Some parts of Ohio D12 come into the Columbus city boundaries and takes up a lot of the northern suburbs in the metro area.
From a kos diary yesterday:
And why is VP Pence making an appearance in the GOP stronghold of Licking County tomorrow (Monday) on behalf of Balderson?…Why not send him to vote rich Delaware or Franklin counties where early voting has GOP returned ballot returns at only 34% in Delaware and a measly 16.6% in Franklin. So why Licking? The GOP return rate there is just 40% (the DEM return rate is 46.8%). So the GOP is still having to shore up what should be a comfortable GOP county. Rumor has it Balderson doesn’t want Trump in the district so Pence will come instead…
If only I’d stayed in Ohio…(that was my district)
In other news, yesterday I posted that if we had been willing to kill 25 percent of Afghanistan’s population (like Genghis and Tamarlane), we might have had it easier. That should have been SEVENTY-FIVE percent.
Good morning.
re: #354 BeachDem
From a kos diary yesterday:
If only I’d stayed in Ohio…(that was my district)
What gets me is not that they’re trying to shore up otherwise “safe” counties, it’s that they’re sending in Mikey. This must be looking for the party like 2006 all over again, when candidates were actually asking Dubya not to show up to stump for them. About the only thing that seems to give them any cold comfort at all is the Senate math remains in their favor with too many seats for Dems to defend in purple/red states.

For the same reason that the NY Times runs puff pieces about the poor downtrodden white conservative in a majority white town whose conservative views are ridiculed as being unsympathetic to anyone suffering from racism and bias.
Because the media continues to push a narrative that whites are the ones suffering, not the minorities whose decades/centuries of subjugation and systemic racism/discrimination continues to be pervasive and whose civil and voting rights are under assault thanks to Trump and the GOP that wants to shift more power to the angry whites who have always had dominion.

There is a reason Fox and right wing radio targeted rural areas. They are an exclusive group, many whom have never left their county, let alone state or country. And if you turn those people against democrats, they vote GOP with their dying breaths.

Republicans only care about public opinion (and their own hides) so they will not do anything until republican voters make them…hence, public opinion is all that matters. Even if Republican voters are a fraction of the voter population, they are whom elected Republicans care about because they keep them going.
I don’t think they can see past a primary to any general.

Some of these folks hate minorities with a passion - hate illegal aliens with a passion and are the strongest supporter for Trump’s boondoggle wall.
They’re also the ones least likely to travel outside their state, encounter minorities of any kind (LGBT, blacks, Jews (non Christians generally), and are in states with no border with a foreign country but who think we’re overrun with foreigners.
Welp, as someone who’s flying overseas in a couple of weeks, this fills me with a vague sense of dread.
Federal air marshals have begun following ordinary US citizens not suspected of a crime or on any terrorist watch list and collecting extensive information about their movements and behavior under a new domestic surveillance program that is drawing criticism from within the agency.
The previously undisclosed program, called “Quiet Skies,” specifically targets travelers who “are not under investigation by any agency and are not in the Terrorist Screening Data Base,” according to a Transportation Security Administration bulletin in March.
The internal bulletin describes the program’s goal as thwarting threats to commercial aircraft “posed by unknown or partially known terrorists,” and gives the agency broad discretion over which air travelers to focus on and how closely they are tracked.
But some air marshals, in interviews and internal communications shared with the Globe, say the program has them tasked with shadowing travelers who appear to pose no real threat — a businesswoman who happened to have traveled through a Mideast hot spot, in one case; a Southwest Airlines flight attendant, in another; a fellow federal law enforcement officer, in a third.
It is a time-consuming and costly assignment, they say, which saps their ability to do more vital law enforcement work.
TSA officials, in a written statement to the Globe, broadly defended the agency’s efforts to deter potential acts of terror. But the agency declined to discuss whether Quiet Skies has intercepted any threats, or even to confirm that the program exists.
Release of such information “would make passengers less safe,” spokesman James Gregory said in the statement.
And this paragraph is particularly ridiculous, given that the goddamn government has encouraged people to be jumpy and nervous in airports by telling them ‘If you see something, say something’ for years.
Already under Quiet Skies, thousands of unsuspecting Americans have been subjected to targeted airport and inflight surveillance, carried out by small teams of armed, undercover air marshals, government documents show. The teams document whether passengers fidget, use a computer, have a “jump” in their Adam’s apple or a “cold penetrating stare,” among other behaviors, according to the records.
Those criteria could include just about anybody. Or everybody.
And while I’m complaining…
My wife and I decided to apply for Global Entry in order to make our flight to Belgium a little less complicated. We applied on the same day, plunked down a hundred bucks each. My wife got her conditional approval a week ago and is going in for her interview this afternoon.
I’m still waiting for conditional approval. If I was a little more paranoid, I might start to think my opposition to a certain presidential administration, and my expression of such online, might have something to do with it.
I’d like to see Rudy asked if conspiracy is a crime (it is), if a conspiracy has to be successful in order to prosecute it (it doesn’t), and how making an agreement with a foreign national to exchange policy changes for damaging information about a political opponent is not conspiracy (it totally is).
re: #386 makeitstop
As somebody who used to fly all the damned time, but hate flying with a passion and spent around 1/2 of my flights in some form of terror (between discomfort to downright abject terror with one of them having the flight attendant handing me free vodka as soon as the seat belt sign went off at 10k feet), I am certain I would have met all that criteria.

If there is a hell, he is in it as certainly as Thatcher, Pinochet, Franco, Mussolini, Stalin & Hitler.

I found myself just realizing that the GOP’s eventual position, which Rudy seems to be working around to, is not going to be “Yeah, so we cheated, what of it?”
Instead, the final position will be “We only cheated to counter Dem cheating!”. If you look at their actions before and after the election, it begins to make a strange sort of sense. Their obsession with the Steele Dossier, their repeated demands for even more documents from the DOJ (and pinning the refusal on Rosenstein), their efforts to stymie investigations into the conspiracy, and their insistence on avoiding any real talk about securing future elections.
In their minds, it was a given that the Clintons would engage in “dirty tricks” to win because she was so unpopular. To them, the Dossier is “proof” of that, even if they can’t prove it had any effect on the race. And that the DNC was so desperate to keep power that they would go along with this, killing the FBI investigation into her emails and even coordinating efforts to spy on the Trump campaign to get an “unfair” advantage. So while they are focused on ending investigation into Trump, it is not so much protection of him as it is protection of the party itself by “proving” that it did nothing worse than what the DNC was already doing.

re: #400 Dr. Matt
It’s remarkable that Butina had her fingerprints on so many GOPers and was more-or-less off most everyone’s RADAR. If she was successful at hiding in plain sight, just imagine what else is going on with GOP/NRA/Klan.
Someone in the media was watching and paying attention. Micheal Isikoff and David Corn.
He even mentioned her in his and David Corn’s book Russian Roulette.
Check this interview out with him…I’ll put up the meaty portion.
NPR - Michael Isikoff On Maria Butina And Russia
KING: So I cannot get over this detail. You wrote a book last spring. Maria Butina was in your book. How is it that she was on your radar so long ago, but we’re all just learning about her now?
ISIKOFF: Well, first of all, the book was out this spring - in March of this year. But she had been on my radar and other journalists’ for quite some time, starting in the 2016 campaign, where people noticed that she had been sort of popping up at political events - conservative political events. Actually, she’d been doing so for some time - Conservative Political Action Conferences, NRA conventions, National Prayer Breakfasts.
And she said - she described to people how she was - had founded a Russian gun rights group.
KING: OK.
ISIKOFF: There wasn’t much of a gun rights movement in Russia, so that seemed odd. But she seemed totally focused on forging these relationships with conservative political activists.
KING: Were people actively suspicious of her? Did you find her suspicious at all?
ISIKOFF: Well, I - actually, as we reported in the book - David Corn and I - there’s a Republican lobbyist who remembers being approached by her at a CPAC conference - Conservative Political Action Conference - and just being struck by how solicitous she was, how she wanted to stay in touch with him and become his Facebook friend. And this is a somewhat elderly gentleman, balding, wasn’t used to this kind of attention from a young, attractive Russian woman. And he, you know, began asking, like, why - what’s going on here? And this kept happening time and again.
And, you know, by the time of the presidential campaign, which really begins when Donald Trump announces in June of 2015. Just a few weeks later, Trump goes to a conservative event in Las Vegas - FreedomFest. Maria Butina is there. There’s a Q&A session. Trump calls on her. She asks about sanctions - what would he do about sanctions against Russia? Hardly a top-level issue at the time. And Trump gives a five-minute answer saying, you know, if I’m elected, you won’t need sanctions. I know Putin. Putin knows me. We’ll get along. And there, the Russians had Trump on record saying he’d ease sanctions if he was elected president.

Was just thinking the other day that O’Queef is like the sad, pathetic poor man’s version of Sacha Baron Cohen. Thankfully right-wingers are too fucking stupid to successfully pull of what Sacha Baron Cohen can do.
Or, alternately, Democratic elected officials and most wannabes don’t have the same shit to hide or repudiate.
re: #405 Targetpractice
Yeah, they’ve already basically said this, that collusion was fine, not illegal, anybody would have taken that meeting, but of course they didn’t collude with Russia, Hillary did! But collusion not illegal, except-for-Hillary’s-collusion, and on and on.
re: #412 Targetpractice
They’re already pretty much on that wavelength, the “So what if he did it? Hillary did too!”, hence the efforts to spin the whole conspiracy as “opposition research” in order to say that it’s “no different” than what Christopher Steele was doing. Even if it turns out that the Trump campaign (and possibly the GOP leadership) were promising changes on US/Russia policy to secure that “dirt,” they’ll argue that we make such deals “all the time.”
Yeah, they take it as an article of faith that Democrats cheat all the time. They point to Soros et al, never mind that the Mercers, Kochs and Aldersons do it more and did it longer.
re: #413 Dr. Matt
Every day Rudy, Donnie, and et al. move the goalposts to a new zip code regarding Russia. It’s only a matter time before they just resort to: Yeah, so we cheated and colluded. So what? There’s nothing in the Consitution about not being able to collude with Russia!
See, the reason why I think they insist on dubbing it “opposition research” and such strident denial is not because Donny is trying to cover up that he cheated to win. The man is so easily bruised that the idea he could only win by cheating is abhorrent to him. It would be an admission that he’s such a shit sandwich that he could only win by putting a thumb on the scale.
No, it makes much more sense if you view his beliefs as those of a man who is trying to justify his actions. He didn’t cheat, he simply “leveled the playing field,” using outside information sources to counter DNC “dirty tricks.” It’s why he obsesses with the electoral map while stridently refusing to accept the popular vote results. He can only square the circle by saying that he won despite efforts by the DNC to “rig” the election, that he was such an awesome candidate that there were enough Americans who voted for him to defeat the “millions of illegal votes.” And the “wiretapping” of Trump Tower, as well as investigations into campaign staff, merely reinforce that belief that the DNC was actively trying to sabotage him but he prevailed by being such an amazing candidate.

The goalposts get moved, taken apart, new goalposts brought in to stand against the other goalposts, the goalposts are turned upside down and set up on their sides, etc.

The question now is which damp squibs in the DNC ranks will totally ignore that the GOP paid no price for stealing a SCOTUS seat and “cross the aisle” to vote for Kavanaugh in the belief that it will save their own seat in November. My money’s on Manchin.
It’s Rohrabacher, who’s ties to Russia are under increasing scrutiny because of his actual connections to Russians. It’s an open joke among GOPers like Ryan that Rohrabacher is a Russian potted plant. Russia’s Butina also thought so.

NRA, Republicans refute GOP sheriff’s stand-your-ground claims (Politico)
A Florida sheriff claimed “stand your ground” essentially prohibited him from making an arrest in a politically charged and racially tinged shooting death, but his fellow Republicans who wrote the law, criminal-court attorneys and even the National Rifle Association are accusing him of misapplying Florida’s self-defense statutes.
In explaining why he didn’t arrest the shooter, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told reporters on July 20 that his hands were tied because the stand-your-ground law “created a standard, that is a largely subjective standard” for the use of deadly force by a shooter.
Gualtieri also suggested his office could be civilly liable simply for arresting the shooter, and he stressed how Florida lawmakers last year changed the 2005 law concerning immunity from prosecution.
But on each of those three counts — immunity, civil liability and subjectivity — experts say Gualtieri is just wrong.
“Nothing in either the 2005 law or the 2017 law prohibits a Sheriff from making an arrest in a case where a person claims self-defense if there is probable cause that the use of force was unlawful,” said Marion Hammer, Tallahassee’s NRA lobbyist who helped shepherd “stand your ground” through the GOP-led Florida Legislature.

3 of my sons inherited the baldness gene from my father through me, and 3 have Z’s full head of hair.
Crazy how it works. Both of our parents are blue eyed so we all are but Dad’s side was much lighter haired but wavy and curly haired while Mom’s is darker and straight. I got the dark hair and the waves while my one brother got the opposite.

I just checked; Larouche is still alive at age 95.
That’s just cruel fate. Both my grandfather’s never made it to 80.

Yep.
The giveaways are the tables with signs with a thousand words on them, reams and reams of printed materials alleging 50 different kinds of nonsense, and graphic design so absolutely horrible that it hurts your eyes just to look.
The ‘Support President Trump’ guys check off every one of those boxes.

NATO isn’t a business shit brain. It’scan alliance and our NATO allies helped after 9/11 when your two sons were nowhere in sight.

And for anyone who’s been wondering, “Whatever happened to Todd Kincannon?” here’s the latest bizarre story. (And when I say bizarre, I am NOT exaggerating.)
Todd Kincannon Proclaims Himself As Jesus Christ, Slaughters Dog
Holy shit, what a wackaloon

I am left handed with green-brown eyes. My wife is right handed with blue eyes. Our oldest two boys are right handed with my eyes. Our youngest boy is left handed with blue eyes.
Trump is speaking at a press conference with the Italian PM. He just went on a rant about America’s immigration laws, saying they’re the “worst in the world” and that “we’re the laughingstock of the world” as a result. He also (again) threatened to shut down the government.

He’s the Abe Vigoda of politics, LOL.

Some foreign leader needs to bring up that we’re being led by our senile grandfather to finally burst the bubble.

That’s from a local wacko, Ivo Benda.

Z and I are both right-handed. 3 of our kids are left handed. We are brown-eyed and all our kids are brown-eyed, but we have some photos of ancestors who had light eyes. I have a bunch of blue-eyed grandkids.
Zedushka is a descendant of the Cohanim but I don’t know if 23andme tests for it.

Both my grandfathers were lefties with one lefty child- not my parents. I’m a lefty as is my niece whose maternal grandfather is one. It’s crazy to think how inheritance is. I could just as easily be blonde.

Can laced Kool-aid be far behind?
Also castration and matching Nike shoes. I hear the shoes are nice, but I’m not a fan of the castration.
