I’m on a mailing list for a couple of hi-fi stores. Both of them sent me mail today saying that they’re going to have to raise the price on some European gear at the end of the month. Trump is really sticking it to those foreigners by making US citizens pay more for our stuff.

Ayeah, because long-term is that the Democrat who replaced Donny ends this ridiculous trade war and gets flayed alive by wingnuts for “surrendering” even as prices come back down.

Reports surfaced in the past few days that organizers with the private group We Build the Wall started building an 18-foot steel bollard wall to fill in gaps in existing barriers.

“The city has not provided any permits, it has not approved of the construction that has gone up already,” Peter Ibardo, a city spokesperson in Sunland Park, N.M., told The Texas Tribune. “They built the structure without authority or any building permits from the city.”

We Build the Wall, which lists former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon as members of its leadership team on its website, began raising money to build the wall through a GoFundMe campaign earlier this year. The group has raised more than $20 million so far.

Javier Perea, the mayor of Sunland Park, said the wall is taller than city ordinance allows, local NBC affiliate KTSM reported.

Perea told local news outlet CBS 4 that the group submitted incomplete paperwork on Friday before beginning construction over Memorial Day weekend.

While the group began building the wall on private land, it still needs to go through the proper protocol with the city.

That reminds me, I have a weather radio. I need to set that thing up. Last time a tornado made a close pass, my cell phone did actually go off. I might not be so lucky in the event of an actual hit.

Weather alerts on the phone are handy when out and about, but I have two real weather radios at home (a Midland walkie-talkie-style portable downstairs and a Midland desktop/wall-mount model mounted on my bedroom wall upstairs).

When Anniston Army Depot was destroying VX and other Bad Things, it gave top-of-the-line commercial emergency radios to every family in the surrounding region, everywhere an escaped plume might reach. You can still get them at local thrift shops for about 3 dollars. Unopened.

And, if cell service does survive, it will be nearly unusable with all the people trying. Ham radios, folks. At a minimum, you can listen to the storm trackers in your area, and if you are in an emergency, it will be on and you are allowed to get on in an emergency without a license. It also doesn’t take much to get a license and you only lose it if you fail to renew it every ten years for free.

To that effect, a PSA: if your weather radios use SAME encoding to focus alerts to your particular city/county (and most have that capability these days), make sure your radio(s) are set with the correct SAME code(s) for where you’re at.

Reminds me of the CERT stuff I did when the tornadoes hit Rowlett in 2015. At one point, we were told that a woman might have been home in a small town home that had had the front part collapse. We were trying to tear into part of it to see if we could find her. After about a half an hour, we were told she was somewhere else.
