Well, speaking of the border, we just got back from Canada. The border crossing at the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel was empty! We got waved right through and the CBP officer did not even want to hear about the Montreal hot dogs or the Shoppers Drug Mart OTC opioids. Just what we need another tariff on things like produce that we buy every day. It’s bad enough that the cost of groceries has gone up even more over the past few months. Every week I shop and every week it seems to be more expensive.

I like how Giuliani thinks GOP lawmakers would be able to shred Mueller in questioning.

Being a meathead is a prerequisite for being a GOP lawmaker, so I don’t think they are capable of shredding Mueller in questioning, even if the fact pattern were favorable (narrator’s voice: it isn’t).

Actually, most of what we import from Mexico is machines and such. Although with respect to groceries, every little bit hurts.

Still on the fence as to whether this will happen, but not yet ready to sell short. Remember the 30% tariff on Mexico?

NEW— In a significant shift, Trump’s top advisers are now eager to see Mueller testify on the Hill, hoping conservative lawmakers can undermine his credibility

It was entertaining to see the video clip of the Fox News viewer who watched the Mueller press conference and was shocked to learn that the Mueller Report did not, in fact, exonerate Trump. Unless Fox limits coverage of Mueller’s testimony to the interrogation by Republican lawmakers only — a very likely scenario, a few of their viewers may come to their senses.

I know that MSNBC occasionally cut away from the Barr Senate interview to their panel because Republicans would give speeches instead of asking legitimate questions. Fox could do the same (except Fox would ignore legitimate questions and go with GOP diatribes).

Jennifer Rubin has laid out, day by day, how she thinks the Democrats in the House should work the evidence. She says it is right that Americans won’t read the report, so take it a day at a time and force-feed them.

One comment:

Robert Mueller yesterday said he would not stray from the record of his work or answer hypotheticals. That is not good enough. Ask this question at a Congressional Committee hearing.

‘Mr Mueller, around 100 former prosecuters have reviewed your evidence in Part II of your report and concluded that, but for the DoJ guidelines which state that you cannot indict a sitting president, the catagoloue of evidence provided in your report would be enough to bring charges of obstruction of justice.

Mr Mueller, if the DoJ guidelines had not been in place, do you concur with the view of arond 1000 other former prosecuters that absent those guidelines the evidence you have presented is sufficient to bring charges of obstruction of justice?’

If Mueller answers ‘yes ‘to that question then impeachment must quickly follow. If the answer is ‘no’ or ‘insufficient evidence’ then Trump must have his day.

Either way, Mueller must stop his ‘coy mistress’ approach and spell out in simple and direct terms in public Congressional hearing what he believes to be true.
Mueller is a decent, honourable servant of the Constitution and the Rule of Law. He deserves our thanks for his painstaking work. Yet his inability to speak plainly on these matters means that, to the majority of the American public, his findings remain a cypher. A puzzle to be worked out providing room for interpetation and ambiguity.

Mueller needs to spell out his findings in plain and direct terms in the public arena of a Congressional hearing. This is Mueller’s ‘Profiles in Courage’ moment. It remains to be seen after a lifetime of militay and public service, if he can rise to this last and greatest challenge; to plainly speak truth to power and most importantly, to the American people, so there is no hiding place for the Presidential corruption and distain for the rule of law that is now the ‘new normal’ in American politics.

Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin are blue. South Texas is blue. It’s the rural areas and suburbs that are the issue. Suburbs swung blue the last election. Rural is the holdout.

We just arrived in Michigan from Ontario this morning. Little wait at the Blue Water Bridge. Customs only asked about our license plate (my two-digit registration usually gets that) and if we were carrying anything to declare. (I didn’t declare the metric fuquetonne of Tim Horton’s ground coffee in the back, though I did declare the cigarettes.)

I popped in to my hometown to visit my cousin on a surprise. “Hi, we were just passing through the area, and since tomorrow’s my birthday, I thought I would give you me as a birthday present.”

We spent several hours together visiting, went out to dinner with her eldest daughter and her grandchildren, then went our separate ways.

Tomorrow we will arrive in Chicago to visit my mother. My step-father is back in the hospital today in isolation with a returned c. diff infection. When we called from Chicopee, he said he wanted to see us.

Speaking truth to power yes — plainly speaking truth to power? that’s not within his toolkit.

It reminds me of Prax, a character in Book 2(?) of the Expanse series. Prax is being subjected to interrogation and confesses the truth, knowing that he will be executed; the interrogators were so confused by his statements, they released him. He even tried to explain his culpability further, but they did not want to hear anything more. Mueller is the same. He has his way of addressing issues — and a simple yes or no is beyond his capability.

I’m not sure how that will kick-start the trade agreement approval.

This morning CBC Radio One noted that Justin Trudeau tabled the “new NAFTA” (as he called it) in the House of Commons.

This doesn’t just screw with us, it screws with both Mexico and Canada. I imagine the Prime Minister wasn’t happy to hear Trump’s ludicrous demand on Mexico today.

Washington Republicans only wanted someone to sign legislation they created; they didn’t care about the President’s competence, only that he would nominate the judges they wanted and approve the laws that helped the wealthy. They didn’t care about a “good” President. They are quite content with his domestic policies.

I am as well. I’ve been to Niagara Falls before (several times on trips from Virginia Beach to Michigan), but when my wife said she hadn’t been since she was about three, it was a side trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario for a visit.

CAN$20 to park is a bit steep.

There is going to be a huge push by the same assholes that are defending him now for “forgiveness,” and “it’s time to move on,” or he’ll be too feeble to defend himself in court, etc., etc. etc. I think our best hope is that NY state and a few others go after his ill-gotten gains. It’s not as good as jail, but I do believe he will be one the hook for millions that he doesn’t have.

As far as “forgiveness”, or “with Malice toward none, with charity for all” (a quote from Abe Lincoln) my response on that is, “Not this time, buddy”.

A Few Thoughts On Pete Buttigieg’s Dick Brother-In-Law Who Doesn’t ‘Agree’ With Chasten’s ‘Gay Lifestyle’ (Goes to Wonkette)

It’s usually bad form to begin writing a piece by telling the reader why you’re writing about something, or the feelings you have approaching that subject, or that thing your mom used to say about something related to that subject, because if that’s what people wanted to read, they’d be reading your autobiography. We’re going to do it anyway, though, because we read the Washington Post profile and interview of Chasten Buttigieg a few weeks back, about how he was rejected by his family, experienced homelessness, and now, at the ripe old age of 29, it’s at least theoretically possible he could end up being America’s first First Gentleman, and also America’s first gay presidential spouse. And then, today, we read in the Washington Examiner that his older brother, Rhyan Glezman, a country church preacher in Michigan, is freely telling the media that he’s feeling downright TRIGGERED by the Post’s account of his family’s reaction to Chasten coming out, because it makes them look like bigots, when in reality he loves Chasten. He just doesn’t accept Chasten’s “lifestyle” and thinks he’s going to hell probably, but he loves him. (For the record, it sounds like Chasten’s mom and dad have come around. Good for them!)

That ol’ “love the sinner, hate the sin” stuff you get from Christians. Of course when the sin is who you are, that really means you hate the sinner. That’s the part they don’t seem to connect.

Because Trump has been threatening to go after political opponents, the Republicans will characterize any indictments as Democrats going after political opponents, but I told my dad that we are going to need a president to do just that. And the list of Democratic candidates who will shrinks to a very small group.

“… The Washington Post reports:

In phone calls, White House meetings and conversations aboard Air Force One during the past several months, Trump has aggressively pushed Dickinson, N.D.-based Fisher Industries to Department of Homeland Security leaders and Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, the commanding general of the Army Corps, according to the administration officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal discussions.

… Fisher is a curious choice. The company is already suing the government after being rejected for any Army Corps contract for the border wall. Fisher was one of the companies that participated in a prototype exercise outside San Diego in 2017, but the company’s wall didn’t meet the specifications laid out by the Department of Homeland Security, which wanted a wall that agents could see through. Instead, Fisher pushed a more expensive, concrete wall, similar to the one that Trump promised during the 2016 presidential campaign. But the Fisher prototype was late and over budget. …”

Game 1 of the NBA Finals is a pretty exciting game.

Toronto is hanging with Golden State pretty well. In fact, they held on through the 3rd quarter and have a lead in the fourth.

Can they hang with GS for the whole series? That’s the question. But I’ll admit they’re doing a lot better than I thought they would in this game.

On CBC Radio One today there were interviews of Toronto Raptors fans who were complaining about getting tickets to the game.

One of the first things the Progressive Conservatives did under Stephen Harper was get rid of ticket scalping laws (they interfere with the free market, don’tcha know).

Scalpers bought up huge blocks of tickets and were reselling them for about CAN$10,000 each. Hometown fans who’ve been waiting throughout the franchise’s existence for this moment can not go to the games because only rich douchecanoes can afford the tickets.

Let’s say Trump loses and voluntarily leaves office. Immediately thereafter we will hear how he has full-blown Alzheimer’s disease and should not face any prosecution. A teary-eyed Ivanka will plead on behalf of her father, and all will be “forgiven.”

Meanwhile, the bitter 2021-22 recession will be blamed on the Democrats, and we will see huge gains by the GOP in 2022. Folks, we are headed toward a totalitarian state thanks to Citizens United, a hard-right Supreme Court, and the Constitutional Convention movement.

We might as well start practicing our goose stepping.

Think not? Did you imagine us being where we are now just 3 years ago?

I work with these folks. I hear their conversations while reading this thread at lunch, and I watch them proudly wear their MAGA hats at Earth, Wind and Fire concerts (seriously!).

The disease has been carefully cultivated and unleashed. FFVCS is just the tip of the iceberg and we are the fucking Titanic.

This “attempted coup” stuff from the GOP is both getting old and concerning. Old because they’re all saying that. Concerning because everything that has been done is strictly by the Constitution, which they are calling a coup.

Since it is projection with conservatives always, it sounds like they want a coup to overthrow the Constitution.

We ended up with a mess because Republicans thought Trump would be a good President.

They thought Trump would be a happy figurehead with the trappings of office while they went about carrying out their conservative/reactionary economic and social agenda. (The latter why the evangelicals are slavish supporters of someone who is anti- of just about every moral value they supposedly espouse.)

Instead they got a narcissistic ego that even they cannot control. But are willing to continue to support since it is still allowing them to continue with the dream of undoing the New Deal. And maybe much much more.
