Watch Live: Intelligence Chief Joseph Maguire Testifies Following Democrats’ Impeachment Inquiry

Live at 8:45 a.m. ET on September 26, The Washington Post will have live coverage of the House Intelligence Committee hearing with the acting director of national intelligence Joseph Maguire. The Post’s Libby Casey will be joined by Washington Post reporters with the latest news related to the whistleblower complaint and the Trump impeachment inquiry. Maguire, who held back the whistleblower’s complaint involving President Trump and Ukraine from Congress, will testify before the House on the process and handling of that complaint. While the House could vote to impeach Trump, the Senate must also vote to convict the president, where Republicans were dismissive of Pelosi’s move as politically motivated.

Congress has launched impeachment proceedings against a president only four times in the nation’s history and impeachment has occurred only twice: against Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Neither was removed from office. President Richard M. Nixon resigned in 1974 after the House initiated impeachment proceedings but before an official vote. Read more: https://wapo.st/2nxqC0Z. Maguire is making it pretty clear that he did everything to cross his t’s and dot his i’s. He strikes me as being of the same stock as Mueller, which I find I can respect despite his connection to this administration.

Maguire’s trying to to do everything he can to claim that going to the conspirators with a complaint involving their actions was totally in keeping with the law.

Maybe, technically, it was.
Unfortunately, it’s likely the whistleblower-complaint system wasn’t/isn’t designed to deal with the situation where the accused wrongdoers ARE the chain-of-command…

BTW, in case it hasn’t been posted here before, here is a link to the actual (mostly-unredacted) text of the whistleblower complaint.

30
Targetpractice  Sep 26, 2019 • 7:15:45am

By the way, the question asked was (paraphrased) “Did you discuss with the president about this complaint.” The contents of conversations are covered by the privilege, not whether a conversation happened.

31
Florida Panhandler  Sep 26, 2019 • 7:17:36am

We have a serial criminal in the White House.

We have an entire major political party in control of the Senate that is controlled by a serial criminal with an ideology centered on tribal loyalty rather than any sort of recognition of law, ethics, country, or reality itself for that matter.

The USA as we know it is fucked. Our pre-1980’s political and societal model used to be the envy of the world. With the current president still in the White House and the GOP in firm control of the Senate (and the majority of state governments) the country is crumbling into an empty shell of itself that no other country now wants to emulate.

And we have weaselly sycophants like Nunes acting like accomplices in a cover up rather than servants of truth or law. Sad times.

Which of course, (IMHO) would likely backfire on Trump and his crooked Admin. like almost everything else he’s tried: I can think of few actions more likely to assure Trump’s guilt in the public mind than booting YET ANOTHER official for putting ethics/the law above “protecting the President”. Everyone in Trumpworld is there to protect Trump. That he needs so much protection is a direct result of Trump being the head of a crime syndicate where Trump’s personal power and profits are paramount and everything else flows from that.

If you do the right and legal thing, but it goes against Trump, you’re out. That everyone in Trumpworld goes out of their way to protect Trump shows how debased Trumpworld truly is, including McGuire.

There is only one right answer, and that’s to uphold the rule of law. No one in Trumpworld does that. They’re all bending the law to Trump’s whims.

The lower average intelligence of conservatives is really starting to show. The ease with which their talking points are shot down is one indicator. Of course, Nunes and other RWNJ leaders are likely above average but they know they have to pitch their appeal to an audience of congenital morons, and that constrains their arguments quite a bit. The disarray at Fox News is another example; a message to which the base will respond is going to be completely inadequate as events move forward.

It seems things are beginning to turn around in the second half, but overall today was not a good day for the GOP. About the only good points I’ve seen so far has been Stefanik pointing out the one sentence from the first page about the WB not having direct knowledge and a few times it seemed like they actually gave a damn about Maguire. Beyond that, so far they’ve not managed to get him to play ball with their conspiracy theories and could only find complaint with Schiff’s opening remarks.

The crazy train makes a short diversion from impeachment.
Mark Taylor and the Mystery of the Prophetic Elevators

Mark Taylor, the so-called “firefighter prophet” who is mainly just a radical right-wing conspiracy theorist, appeared on “The MC Files” program earlier this week, where he attempted to explain how two elevator malfunctions were prophetic signs from God.

“God’s been showing me something,” Taylor said, claiming that an elevator in the Washington Monument getting stuck and an instance in which Pope Francis was trapped in an elevator earlier this month were both “prophetic signs.”

“We all know the Washington Monument is a phallic symbol to Baal built by the Freemasons,” he said. “We all know the Vatican is demonic.”

Islamic terrorists aren’t the only reason security costs have increased around public monuments, probably not even the primary one. At the outside, there are probably no more than 8 or 10 ISIS or Al Qaeda terrorists in this country, but millions of goober whackos, any one of which could go off on a martyr binge at any time.

It’s a bad angle. Atkinson is going to be testifying, I would imagine, about what he did to investigate the report. I suspect his testimony will blow the hearsay argument to pieces.

But Atkinson’s testimony will include lots of classified stuff, in a non-public hearing. Only the intel committee will hear it.

They all are, it’s all they have. They’re just totally ignoring the fact that the transcript, Trump and Giuliani have all confirmed the underlying allegations in the complaint.

it’s a whistleblower complaint

doesnt matter if it’s hearsay
what matter(ed) was whether it was deemed credible to investigate

the investigation determines whether it’s true/accurate

In a lot of ways, Maguire sounded like Mueller in his reasoning for why he made a personal decision (and it was his decision) on a matter of law, Mueller with the decision not to indict and Maguire on whether or not the complaint under the “urgent concern” classification. The difference is that Mueller made clear that, since he couldn’t make that decision himself, he left it to Congress to address the matter. Maguire just handed it off to his boss and was told to hand it off to his underboss, who quickly moved to bury the whole matter.

A former top Ukrainian prosecutor, whose allegations were at the heart of the dirt-digging effort by Rudolph W. Giuliani, said Thursday he believed that Hunter Biden did not run afoul of any laws in Ukraine.

“From the perspective of Ukrainian legislation, he did not violate anything,” former Ukrainian prosecutor general Yuri Lutsenko told The Washington Post in his first interview since the disclosure of a whistleblower complaint alleging pressure by Trump on Ukraine’s president, Volodymr Zelensky.

snip

Giuliani has not offered any evidence. Burisma’s owner came under scrutiny by Lutsenko’s predecessors for possible abuse of power and unlawful enrichment, but Hunter Biden was never accused of any wrongdoing in the investigation.

As vice president, Joe Biden pressured Ukraine to fire the Lutsenko’s predecessor, Viktor Shokin, who Biden and other Western officials said was not sufficiently pursuing corruption cases. At the time, the investigation into Burisma was dormant, according to former Ukrainian and U.S. officials.

Borowitz:
Putin Saddened That Trump Asked Other Foreign Country to Meddle in Election

MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he was “saddened and hurt” that Donald J. Trump had asked a different foreign country to meddle in a U.S. election.

“I thought when it came to election meddling that Donald and I were exclusive,” an emotional Putin told reporters. “This feels like a betrayal.”

Putin said that when he read the call summary of the phone conversation between Trump and the President of Ukraine, “I could not believe my eyes. It was just like the conversations Donald and I used to have.”

The Russian leader said that he had considered meddling in the 2020 election to help Trump, but added, “Now I’m not so sure.”

“We had something special, but now that’s gone,” Putin said. “I feel so used.”

This joke actually raises a pretty important question: Just which other foreign governments have helped the Republicans, especially now that it is so obvious how willing the GOP is to accept such aid, and how gullible their base is?

Any rule of law requires people to enforce it to make it have any meaning. With McConnell and the GOP refusing to do it, and so many Republican voters ok with it, written law doesn’t mean anything. All you can hope for is that some people remain in their office that care about it, and that enough voters in our case decide that it needs to be enforced.

Donny better watch his lips talking about hanging for treason. He could end up at the end of a rope.

re: #193 Mike Lamb

The other big deal is in the appendix of the complaint where it states the whistleblower was informed that this isn’t the first time that a transcript was mis-classified in order to protect Trump.

It was systemic and systematic

Trump is so frustrated that he can”t be like his N. Korean buddy and just cage his opponents and blow them up.

Non Compos Mentis

If Trump thinks the whistle blower is a spy guilty of treason, why did he authorize the release of the complaint?

Holy crap, Trump’s in full Robert DeNiro/Al Capone mode from “The Untouchables”

This is your presidency. There’s no washing it off.
Like “Moscow mitch”. It’s forever now

L. Ron Trump is starting to disenturbulate. I hope they have a nice heavy blanket and a padded room ready at the White House.

McGuire did talk to Trump. He’s lying.
Playing theologian with the law.

He should take the approach Mueller used: “If I said no, that would be perjury.”

Yeah, I can’t see this ending well for the Trump team at all - having as their first choice for impeachment defense an individual who openly admits to his willingness to commit perjury:

Lewandowski may lead White House impeachment team

I suppose someone told him that he had no chance in hell in getting that Senate seat.

re: #200 Mescalero09

So. Where’s the translator that translated the meeting between Trump and Putin whose notes were shredded?
If I was him I’d be in a foreign embassy pleading asylum as I record everything I know.

First, I thought that was a woman. Second, no one knows whether that person was even still alive before this. And considering she was translating a meeting between mob bosses, I might bet against it.

I have no idea what they held over that person’s head to get them to even consider translating that train wreck, nor why that person didn’t run to request asylum the second they were free from Secret Service eyes.
