I’m sure in April 1945 there were guys in Bavarian beer halls who thought the Reich had a good 900 years left.

I’m sure in April 1945 there were guys in Bavarian beer halls who thought the Reich had a good 900 years left.

Actually, my neighbor told me that after crossing the Rhine into Germany in early ‘45, they would run into sullen True Believers who kept insisting that Der Führer had a Secret Weapon that he would pull out at the last second, one that would Guarantee Total Victory, and then they would be the ones laughing.

After they liberated some of the death camps, some of the guys circled back to those towns where the fanatics lived.

That was all he had to say about that subject.

From the article:

In recent months, Rupert’s oldest son has been holding strategy conversations with Fox executives and anchors about how Fox News should prepare for life after Trump. Among the powerful voices advising Lachlan that Fox should decisively break with the president is former House speaker Paul Ryan, who joined the Fox board in March. “Paul is embarrassed about Trump and now he has the power to do something about it,” an executive who’s spoken with Ryan told me.

Imagine, being Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and believing you had no power to stop the President of the United States from being an international embarrassment and/or committing crimes.

How fucking pathetic do you have to be?

Apparently, Trump’s sanctions on Venezuela are also managing to hurt Cuba. Cuba has been dealing with a severe oil/gas shortage for about a week or two, now (to the point where farmers can’t sell their products to the government because the government doesn’t have gas for their trucks).

Basically, Cuba buys most of its oil from Venezuela, but Trump’s sanctions has made it harder for Venezuela to produce/export oil and gas:

The Trump administration imposed sanctions in January banning U.S. firms or U.S. subsidiaries of foreign firms from selling fuel to Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA both for domestic consumption and for re-exports. The measures also ban any trade in dollars with PDVSA or its units.

Washington in July also sanctioned specific vessel operators covering the Venezuela-Cuba route and the entity receiving Venezuelan oil, state-run Cubametales. The nations have since struggled to find tankers to transport the oil.

Cuba imports not only crude from Venezuela but also gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, lubricants and cooking gas, according to internal PDVSA data.

Not sure what this means for Cuba, but there’s been some open dissent against Diaz-Canal on social media, which is definitely different.

They know on bases with asbestos still to be cleared; in run-down schools on family bases; on promised new Air Force facilities. It’s all going to his crony contractors who will build an edifice on confiscated land that damages natural resources and does nothing to solve immigration issues.

I have some sad news - long time LGF member Sionnain has passed away. I don’t have any details except that her daughter found her on Monday. My condolences to her family too.

Hi.

The arborist who removed the dead portion of our double elm tree yesterday just called. He identified the species of tree as Ulmus pumila, or the Siberian Elm tree (sometimes misnamed Chinese Elm).

This type of tree grows in extremely dry and cold places in eastern Asia, including the Gobi Desert.

The USDA cultivated the tree in the aftermath of the Dust Bowl because of its ability to withstand bitter cold and dry conditions, meaning the northern High Plains is a good place to grow the tree. (I’m not sure why we have one, we have the only tree like it in town.)

There is a laboratory which is currently running an experiment growing the trees in Sidney, Nebr. as Siberian Elms are very resistant to Dutch Elm disease. That experiment (if it doesn’t receive funding) is expected to end next year.

Ulmus pumila (goes to Wikipedia, with a photograph of an example tree in the Gobi Desert; it looks very much like our tree in shape though ours is much larger).

JFC. This is insane shit.

TRUMP: But you know you look at that — most presidential, I just said I’m the most presidential except for possibly Abe Lincoln when he wore the hat — that was tough to beat.

(Laughter)

Honest Abe, when he wore that hat, that was tough to beat. But I can’t do that, that hat wouldn’t work for me. Yeah, I have better hair than him.

So the whistle-blower came out and said nothing. Said “a couple of people told me he had a conversation with Ukraine.” We’re at war. These people are sick. They’re sick. And nobody’s called them out like I do. I don’t understand. People are afraid to call them out. They’re afraid to say that the press is crooked. We have a crooked press. We have a dishonest media. So now they’re devastated, but they’ll always find something. I’m sure there’ll be something they’ll find in this report that will suit their lie. But basically that person never saw the report, never saw the call. Never saw the call. Heard something, and decided that he or she or whoever the hell it is — sort of like almost a spy.

I want to know who’s the person that gave the whistle-blower the information, because that’s close to a spy. You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart? Right? With spies and treason, right? We used to handle them a little differently than we do now. Now you have guys like little Adam Schiff defending you. He says “pencil neck.” That name stuck. He’s got shirts that are too big, because you can’t buy shirts that small. He was never a coal miner, Joe, let’s put it that way. I don’t think he worked in the mines. Do you think? I don’t think so.

Management takes sides and puts the news side behind the propagandists like Carlson and Hannity.

Shep Smith occasionally finds actual hard news and reports objectively from time to time. That’s a threat to someone like Carlson.

Fox remains a propagandist network for the GOP. And this will hit them hard as we are likely to learn just how involved Hannity is in all this.

Yup. We are kidding ourselves if we think Trump/Pence/Barr etc. will be impeached. Mitch will put a stop to it and Republicans won’t even blink an eye. If the Dems don’t campaign HARD on this next year, labeling the GOP as a whole, a bunch of Constitution-shitting, traitorous weasels, they don’t deserve to win.

I REALLY hope I’m wrong, and enough Republicans come to their senses, but they’ve proven time and time again that they just won’t.

We are in for some serious shit next year if Trump loses and refuses to leave, claiming the election was stolen by illegal votes. He will tie it up in his stacked courts forever. Probably declare a national emergency too.

Reupping this:

Impeachment is a process that starts in the House with the investigation of claims and charges. The House votes those charges to be advanced to the Senate for trial where the outcome is to either remove from office or not remove. It takes 60 votes to remove.

Impeachment is underway. The investigations ongoing this week are part of the impeachment process that will culminate with votes on specific charges that go to the Senate for action.

McConnell may end up trying to kill it, but the House will have discharged its duty here to impeach Trump. McConnell will forever go down as the guy who defends the utterly corrupt Trump (and hopefully takes down the GOP with him as Graham warned way back when).

10 years ago today when I talked Charles into opening registration for me, I would have given you the finger if you’d told me that 10 years later Trump would be POTUS and America would be facing this kind of crisis.

I came here after learning elsewhere (I believe FlyerTalk “anything goes” forum?) that Charles was virulently protesting the gathering right wing lunacy, at that time coalescing around Glenn Beck (!). This was quite a shock to me, as upon my previous visit to LGF (in 2006) it was…um…REALLY pro-GWB.

At that time I was researching the “fauxtography” scandal from the 2006 war in Lebanon for a lesson I was preparing to teach while I was still living in Germany. I appreciated the fact Charles was shining a spotlight on this issue, but once I got an idea of the clientele I left and never imagined I would return.

All these years later, I am glad what Charles was doing here came to my attention and I felt motivated to become a part of this community.

I am grateful to people here who have shown genuine concern for me as my health has gone bad in recent years. I am sure it speaks to the fact that I am a fairly mediocre human being in real life more than anything else, but I have had at least as many people from here checking in on me as people I actually know! This means a lot of me, especially during a week like this in which I have experienced a setback after a long stretch of feeling good. Thanks for giving a fuck.

There’s no new trade deal with Japan.

The news this week was that Trump and Japan agreed to have additional talks. It was talks to have more talks. That’s not a trade deal. It’s not done.

Trump’s NAFTA update isn’t done. It’s still baking in the Senate without a vote.

The TCJA is something that has added a trillion dollars in debt; millionaires like Trump benefit, but everyone else is watching the so-called benefits disappear as Trump’s idiotic trade war wipes out savings.

And that trade war is pushing the economy towards a recession because he doesn’t know WTF he’s doing.

Just a technical observation: The Senate doesn’t impeach…the House does.

Nevertheless, the point remains, that getting Trump out of the WH requires that there are enough Republicans in the Senate who care more for the big picture than their own pockets.

Good luck.

Trump will be impeached. That’s up to the House. I doubt he will be convicted, because that’s up to the Senate.

Honestly, I don’t care. If he is impeached, even if the Senate does not vote to convict, that’s an honest day’s effort. And maybe it’ll take the Senate GOP down with him, because he for damn sure isn’t winning anything in 2020.

And the polls show the people are for impeachment. If the Senate kills it, I think a lot of Republicans are going to pay in 2020, not just trump. There’s not enough fraud or gerrymandering that can overcome that large a number.

Also:

Can we just stop this?

If Democratic voters don’t get off their asses and do everything it takes to remove Trump, McConnell, McCarthy, and every other Republican, then the country deserves to go into ruins. That’s way more in line with the truth than if ~300 men and women take time off from investigating Trump to sooth the egos of people who have their own responsibility.

A friend of the family sent me an email, and said she often mentioned how much she enjoyed her participation at LGF and how much she learned from other members.

And I learned much from her.

I hope her family can gain some comfort at knowing how much she was appreciated here. Rest in power.

For Trump to end up as President Asterisk would, frankly, be pretty damn satisfying; I won’t lump him in with Bill Clinton, even though what ended up happening with Clinton (impeachment without conviction) will likely happen to Trump as well, because, even with all of his many faults, Clinton is still likely to be remembered as a good president, with the receipts to back it up.

The fire starter has history…

Back in Lone Jack, Graham is facing an arson charge from last year. Court documents show on Aug. 12, 2018, around 2 p.m., they got word of a fire at the intersection of W. Cannon and Bynum roads.

A tractor trailer with bales of hay was ablaze in front of the old Perrywinkle building.

Investigators said they were able to connect Graham to the fire through surveillance video where they saw his car drive up to the hay and watch as an arm came out of the window and lit the hay on fire.

In the documents, officials say Graham was there while firefighters put the blaze out. When they talked to him about the fire, he said he went to lunch at the Lone Jack Cafe, came out and saw the fire.

When confronted with the video of the incident, he allegedly wrote in a statement, “I guess I done it.”

And while Joni was thinking about ethanol, one of my senators was trying to do a mob boss impression and the other one was doing this:

My senator Deb Fischer has been going on about agriculture, the recent flooding in Nebraska, a trade agreement with Japan that doesn’t exist, and proudly saying she voted against the previous bill to revoke Trump’s emergency border declaration.

She doesn’t note on her page she was part of the unanimous consent motion on the current bill.

Senator Sasse meanwhile is bashing Nancy Pelosi for “holding up” NAFTA 2.0 (while studiously ignoring Mitch McConnell holding everything up).

Driving out to the country tonight, I listened to a Terry Gross interview of Tom LoBianco talking about his new book on Mike Pence. Some background on just how stunningly cynical Pence and “Mother” are. There’s a story (from former Trump campaign aides) about election night, and her reaction to their calculation failing:

“…In that moment, they lost that bet. And now he’s gone from four months of having to carry the water for a guy who talks about, you know, serially molesting women to four years of that, possibly eight years of that. And she knows that it’s going to ruin his image because has developed a very clean image in his career trying to - so that’s why she’s angry. Politically, they lost. They lost that bet on election night.”

And to this day, Republicans deify Ronald Reagan, who willingly participated in the Iran-Contra scandal.

I repeat myself often here: Donald Trump is not the problem. Donald Trump is the symptom.

I remember how President Pruneface’s pals looted the Savings & Loans…and screwed my aunt out of her pension that she paid into for 49 years…

One of the problems with the NPR reporting of the Ukraine scandal is that Mara Liasson is a Fox News contributor and they don’t make that very clear (or the fact that Fox is basically a propaganda channel).

Bring it! WAR ON CHRISTMAS!

The Puritans were on to something when they banned Christmas. They explicitly banned mince pies, which I think shows particularly good insight and judgement.

It’s instructive to listen to their more subtle approach. vs. Fox. They’re trying to deflate Democratic hopes that impeachment will be accepted by a majority of the country.

I think what we’re learning is how closely people with no conscience and huge needs for power and control will flock together.

All of these people, there’s less to them than meets the eye. They succeed because they’re just without shame, without self-reflection, and most people have no capacity for dealing with people that empty.

I have some sad news - long time LGF member Sionnain has passed away. I don’t have any details except that her daughter found her on Monday. A friend of the family sent me an email, and said she often mentioned how much she enjoyed her participation at LGF and how much she learned from other members.

RIP Sionnain
