Cosmic Jazz for the 21st Century: The Comet Is Coming: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

This amazing group reminds me a little bit of Battles in the way they’re exploring the frontiers of instrumental rock/jazz/whatever, creating a kind of music that draws on the influence of minimalist modern classic composers like Philip Glass or Steve Reich. But The Comet Is Coming adds a heaping helping of Sun Ra to this mix, and more than a little metal.

Watch The Comet Is Coming play “Super Zodiac”, “Summon The Fire” and “Blood Of The Past” at the Tiny Desk.

Dec. 13, 2019 | Bob Boilen — The Comet is Coming is a force of nature. The British trio’s approach to the Tiny Desk was ferocious. Shabaka Hutchings, aka King Shabaka, blew his sax hard while his effects pedal added reverb, expanding not only his sound but altering the office and making it a little eerier.

The set began with a deep drone from keyboardist Dan Leavers, aka Danalogue. It kicked into full gear when he leaped into the air and, on descent, drummer Max Hallett, aka Betamax, whacked the snare drum, setting off a transformative 19-minute concert.

The Comet is Coming is the kind of instrumental jazz trio that takes music lovers out of their comfort zone and into a musical realm they may never have explored. There’s familiarity in these screechy sax/synth/drum dialogues, with the same kind of fuel that fires up Led Zeppelin or Fugazi, for example. Only here, what The Comet is Coming lacks in words, it makes up for in Shabaka’s reedy lyricism, along with electronic textures from Dan Leavers.

These songs are from the band’s second album, Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery. This is music for adventure, a thrill-ride that may cleanse your musical palette and alter your taste.

I’ve learned that Christians, in general, seem to have a poor understanding of what Jesus actually said, and prefer to believe what their pastors and friends tell them instead. Confirmation bias writ large.

22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times

Richard Branson:

“…Even before the starters arrived he began telling me about how he had asked a number of people for help after his latest bankruptcy and how five of them were unwilling to help,” Branson wrote, although he didn’t identify the five people.

“He told me he was going to spend the rest of his life destroying these five people.”

Branson called the encounter “bizarre” and expressed concerns about Trump’s “vindictive streak,” which he said wouldn’t bode well for a president who should be more concerned with global affairs than personal vendettas.

Fun fact, which you may already know: Seven is the Biblical number for completion. Peter was asking, “Lord, should I forgive my brother forever?” Jesus’s reply was along the lines of, “Not just forever, you tool, but literally anything and everything that they may do to you until the end of time.”

So, mathematically, the ordinal number of the natural numbers is seven, and the ordinal of the reals is 77.

I’m watching a Russian production on Amazon: “Sophia.”

(Titles: Supported by the Russian Defense Ministry)

It opens with the young Ivan the Terrible being tutored by a bearded clergyman, discussing Rome.

“The Roman Empire fell because it was full of heretics.”
“And the crown of earthly princes was brought to Constantinople..”
“And they called it the second Rome.”
“But Byzantium fell, conquered by the Ottomans. And then your grandfather said
‘Moscow is The Third Rome, and there will be no other.’
It was founded by your grandmother. Sophia.”

CarolJ  Dec 21, 2019 • 8:28:43pm

Sometimes I’m inclined to call the whole regressive tech thing the “Horse and Buggy Coalition”, although Trump would never be so ecologically sound as to use a few horses.
It’s Bannon’s talk about 1930’s ironworks and building as well. Nazi Germany revived its economy by building iron and such-putting men to work laying railway tracks and building tanks. The admiration for that world is that white men would sweat again and use their muscles to dominate everyone else. A man didn’t have to be educated or work with a lot of women or sit in a classroom or at a desk.
I’ts hating modern, efficient technology because electrons-and the multicultural intellectual trust is starting to supplant the carbon extraction industry. It’s Saudi Arabia and Russia hating the fact that they can’t be superpowers now simply because they sit on a lake of oil.

This is also Donald’s-and his white male generation’s rage. We’ve moved on away from the days when a dumb ass like him was considered an oracle just because he was white and had a penis. The people they lorded it over now no longer genuflect to them anymore-so they would rather burn up the world than share it with us, or just be equals.

Back in the 1960’s or so, buying light bulbs was about a monthly thing for us. They would get hot and burn out regularly and needed replacement. It was part of our grocery list and we bought some every month to replace those that we burned out. I remember the 4-packs of 60 watt bulbs wrapped in paper that were a staple in our house.

We would have killed for lightbulbs that lasted at least a couple of months and weren’t a fire hazard if left on too long.

Last year-I got several bulbs last year from the power company. About a dozen or so, and I haven’t changed one since-LEDs by the way, and I still have several bulbs still in those little boxes. By the way, my last flourescent that I got earlier in the decade still worked, but the bottom burned out-the wiring in my place from back in 2000 wasn’t all that compatible. But it lasted about 5-6 years or so and was still lighting up the place when it finally had to be removed to be replaced with an LED.

Christmas lights would routinely start fires, especially if left on overnight accidentally or when the wires frayed. I remember when I was eleven-the last time we had a real tree-when it caught fire due to the C4 bulbs we had. Now the real tree fire hazard isn’t the lights-it’s having them dry out due to lack of water.

Yes, I have an artificial tree. But for a long time I still had to worry about fire due to my incandescents-and them being plugged into the wall. Thanks to LED’s I no longer worry about my Christmas lights catching fire because with my LEDs, a strand of lights now run on 3AA batteries. My tree lights now are USB and I have 5 strands going into a USB strip. The power probably equals a couple of the AA batteries.

When I first got a computer, used-the CRT took up the width of the desk and was so heavy I needed help getting it-and the box for the computer-upstairs. When I tried to add cable upstairs-the breaker box blew.

Now I’m typing on a 19 inch flat LED monitor, and my tv is also a flat screen. Both light in weight and in energy use.

No way am I going back to the heat and heaviness of the past. Donald Trump can just suck it.

I’m sorry you have lost two of your friends! Have been a crazy cat lady for many decades now. My eldest is who knows how old, as all of mine have been dumps. (If you live in the country and have a reputation for taking in cats, you will find that they mysteriously find you.) So I don’t know how old she is, but she is getting quite frail, so time must be growing short.

I have no AC in my apartment. The day I removed my 17” NEC 4Fge monitor, the temperature went down by 5 degrees. I have no incandescent bulbs in my house, and I remember the 100/200/300W 3-way bulbs we had in my family’s house, which were unavailable after the Energy Crisis for some reason.

Even computers are more energy-efficient, the ones I build and buy. Perhaps these people could revive CRT televisions—there are people restoring them as a hobby, and I did fix those for fun and profit while in college.

Our oldest is now 17.5 (the other 2 we lost were 15.5) and he went to the vet today for some blood work. He’s still healthy as a horse and possibly pre-diabetic, but the stress of going to the vet could have caused that anomaly. He’ll be re-checked again in a few weeks.

The kind of sad part is that I think our youngest dog actually misses the cat we lost this week. They were kind of buddies. The dog is now trying to be a little friendly with our remaining cat but he isn’t having it! LOL!

I’ve tried to be better about not stereotyping Boomers…but I don’t see a lot of my generation being the ones bitching about the demise of the incandescent bulb. But perhaps that’s because we’re so strapped for cash, anything that can make a difference in an electricity bill is welcomed with open arms. Not to mention being able to use one bulb for months or years at a time, instead of needing to change them out every other month and (yes) needing to put “light bulbs” on the shopping list alongside “bread” and “eggs.”

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Dec 22, 2019 • 3:20:51am

As we’ve often noticed, “Christmas” music in America is a nostalgic yearning for the childhood of the (early) baby boomers.

Well, here’s an album that comes from 1959. Not in it’s day nostalgic but part of the easy listening genre of it’s day:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬, 𝐈𝐧𝐜 / 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 / 𝟏𝟔-𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦

The performers are a studio group called “The Guitars”, who backed up many performers in their day. In that group at times was one Tommy Tedesco, a name you may not recognize but whose guitar you’ve heard in a great many TV episodes.

76
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Dec 22, 2019 • 3:22:45am

If you listen to that album, it has some treasures. The performers did more than the thin sounds found in today’s pop. They tried variations on the traditional Christmas tunes that I think work.

The kind of sad part is that I think our youngest dog actually misses the cat we lost this week. They were kind of buddies. The dog is now trying to be a little friendly with our remaining cat but he isn’t having it! LOL!

Cats aren’t stupid. He knows the other cat died after getting too friendly with the dog. He won’t make that same mistake!!

The morons that Trump is appealing to with such “arguments” are the same ones who will waste time and money modifying diesel trucks to belch black smoke in order to “Roll Coal.” They’re deliberately modifying their vehicles in ways that wipe out fuel efficiency and lower any hope of resale value in the future in the name of “stigginit.”

When I worked at the Ford helpdesk, the warranty was automatically voided if a vehicle brought in to the dealership for repair was found to be “rolling coal.”

Someone forgot to set the clock, flashing 12:00.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Boeing safely landed its crew capsule in the New Mexico desert Sunday after an aborted flight to the International Space Station that threatened to set back the company’s effort to launch astronauts for NASA next year.

After seeing this first test flight cut short and the space station docking canceled because of an improperly set clock on the capsule, Boeing employees were relieved to get the Starliner back.

A lot of people, especially in this part of the country, are stuck in the 1950s, when various over-processed, energy-wasting products and practices were the cutting edge of suburban status-seeking. It was also a good way to differentiate oneself from the hard-scrabble farm life that lay in the not-too- distant past.
Not too long ago, a boomer-age Lubbockite BOASTED to me that it was “illegal” (presumably contrary to HOA rules) in her neighborhood to hang clothes out to dry.
I countered that there might be people who see it as an environmentally sound practice, substituting free solar and wind energy for electricity. She thought I was joking.
Another one, a complete stranger, overheard me tell someone I had met my first wife in a laundromat. He interrupted to declare, “Yeah, laundromats. That’s for people who can’t afford a washer and dryer!”
“Oh, is that a big status symbol? A washer and dryer?”
“At least I’ve got one!”
“Congratulations, I do too. Now. But I still have to go to a laundry to get my Savile Row suits cleaned.”
I call this kind of stuff goober materialism, and I believe it is a huge factor in environmental and cultural decline.

This is a bizarre story about two missing children, Joshua Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 17. Police believe they are in grave danger. They’ve been missing since late September.

Probably the best way to go is chronologically.

On July 11, Lori Vallow’s brother shot and killed her husband, Charles Vallow, here in Chandler, AZ. Lori is the mother of the two children.

fox10phoenix.com

“Months later, Lori Vallow’s brother died,” per this article, but I haven’t found the brother’s name.

On October 19, Tammy Daybell, aged 49, died. Her husband, Chad Daybell, married Lori Vallow a few weeks later. On December 11, police exhumed Tammy Daybell’s body, but there’s been nothing out of that.

In the middle of all this, family members requested a welfare check on the two children on November 26. Daybell and Vallow have been uncooperative.

fox13now.com

Normally, this would be just a weird, weird story with a possible tragic ending, except that Chad Daybell is a niche publisher who puts out books for the Mormon market. He’s particularly known for being the publisher of various books by “visionaries,” like a woman named Julie Rowe, which are viewed skeptically by the Mormon church leadership. (In fact, Rowe was excommunicated earlier this year.) It’s my belief that since his books were so well known in the very Mormon community where he lived that he was able to put off the cops for as long as he has.

Well, now the children are being listed as endangered and I have a very bad feeling about this.

Any post-production modification (other than exterior work such as a paint job) not performed by a certified technician at an authorized Ford dealership voids the warranty. This is what every coal-roller was told.

I really don’t get the bitching. It’s a goddamn light bulb! Don’t people have better things to worry about?

re: #126 Eric The Fruit Bat

Michelle Bachmann (R-Mars) bitched about this when Obama was carrying this out.

Only caveat is that the component known as the “reservoir capacitor” in the design needs to be properly sized, which it tends not to be in the cheaper products. Also, keep in mind not all LED bulbs support dimming.
A properly sized reservoir cap in a LED bulb can be recognized by you and your shopping company whipping out your smartphones, turning the camera on and the deflickerer off, and see how much the bulb flickers on the screen. Very little to no flicker indicates a properly sized reservoir cap.
If possible and a dimmable LED bulb, check behavior when dimmed, some have marginally good reservoir caps.

Also, note that mains flicker (which is what you maybe don’t see with the naked eye but can see on a cellphone camera) is a known cause for headache attacks and some forms of epileptic seizures.

As a joke, I want to see three-way bulbs introduced. No, it’s not about THAT use! These were bulbs with two filaments and a special contact and receptacle on the lamp, such that you turned the stem to light one filament, the other filament, or both combined. Hence the term “three-way”.

These bulbs were most commonly rated at 50/100/150 watts. My family had a 100/200/300 watt bulb. It disappeared from the market after the Energy Crisis. I had these bulbs as late as 2000, when I got CFL’s. Three-ways may be the most inefficient bulbs for normal households; halogen bulbs, which I had, were more efficient.
