Rodrigo Y Gabriela: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

April 28, 2020 | Felix Contreras — This unprecedented period of worldwide lockdown has halted public musical performances. But it has also inspired intimate performances by musicians directly from the places where they create their music.

The Mexican duo known as Rodrigo y Gabriela travel the globe playing to crowds who are captivated by their almost telepathic acoustic guitar interplay. But they make their home in Mexico in a sunny Pacific beach town called Zihuatanejo (remember The Shawshank Redemption?). For this performance we get a peek at their home studio, where they surround themselves with guitars and dress down in sneakers and casual clothes. They run through tunes from throughout their recorded history, including a song they played at the Tiny Desk back in 2009. Rodrigo y Gabriela’s picking and strumming feel more relaxed than usual but maintains their intense focus.

Thankfully, in the era of social media, there are plenty of people willing to do the work that the media either can’t or (more likely) won’t in order to sell a “scandal.”

I imagine they’d be happy as pigs in slop if things were as primitive as they were in the 90s and thus they weren’t working against an active effort to debunk Reade’s “allegations.”

So, looks like speculation about Kim Jong-un is also present in North Korea itself. This is a Czech language article that I’ve put into English, and because it’s a bit long, I’ll put it behind a spoiler tag.

The three-week absence of North Korean President Kim Jong-un has sparked speculation about his fate not only in South Korea and the West, but also among DPRK residents who are frightened by rumors that their leader is no longer alive. You are intensified by a video where he is said to have died on Saturday.

If indeed Kim is alive, he appears to be in the Wonsan Harbor area, where he has built a new luxury home, as satellite imagery has revealed. These images also captured unusually heavy traffic of luxury boats and yachts.

A source in the Daily NK server, which focuses on North Korea and obtains information from defectors and their relatives, said Kim’s long absence has led to the spread of speculation about his death among Koreans living near the Chinese border.

According to a source in North Hamgyong Province, the North Koreans are frightened; everyone pretends they have not heard rumors of his death, but “everyone knows”. He told Daily NK on April 29, “There are even people who say they have seen a video confirming Kim’s death, but most people try their best to leave (these reports) untouched because the authorities are prosecuting anyone who has smuggled a video across the border.”

Video announcing Kim’s death
The source came across footage circulating in the province of North Pyongan, which was reported by Daily NK on Tuesday. The five-minute video looks like a report from a Korean Central Television (KCTV) broadcast and reached the country via China , the source said. “The video says that Kim died suddenly, on the spot, during an inspection trip.” Where the inspection trip took place the video does not say.

It also shows the Kumsusan Sun Palace and says, “Our beloved Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un died during an inspection trip while he was giving advice.” He was said to have died on Saturday, April 25, and would be replaced by his younger sister at the head of the Korean Labor Party. The video also includes a shot of an article from the Japanese pro-North Korean newspaper People’s Korea. However, such an article does not exist on the Chosun Shinbo website.

Kim did not appear after the Politburo meeting
Kim has not appeared in public since April 11, and it is considered highly unusual that he did not attend the celebrations of the birth anniversary of his grandfather Kim Il-sung, who founded the DPRK , on April 15 .

“The video has confused ordinary citizens, as well as party members and other representatives,” said a source from Daily NK. “All sorts of rumors are spreading and the government is aware of that. It’s really weird that he doesn’t answer that, for example in the form of a lesson.” In the past, the country’s leadership has always instructed North Koreans on how to respond to such rumors.

According to Daily NK, Kim underwent heart surgery on April 12: That was when CNN reported that he was in critical condition, but no one has confirmed it, and South Korea said that there was no indication that anything extraordinary was happening in the DPRK. According to Mun Jung-in, who holds the position of chief foreign policy adviser to the South Korean president, “Kim has remained in the Wonsan area since April 13.”

The movement of ships in Wosan
Claims about Kim’s place of residence in Wonsan are supported by satellite images on a specialized website about North Korea, 38North, which were published on Saturday. There you can see Kim’s armored train parked in Wonsan at the station, which serves the area and can only be used by Kim’s family.

This speculation was heightened on Thursday by a specialized website in North Korea, NK News, which, referring to satellite images taken by Planet Labs, noted that an unusually heavy movement of yachts had been detected in the Wonsan area. It was also mentioned that another luxury resort has been built in the area on the Hodo Peninsula, which lies directly opposite Wonsan.

Kim Jong-un is afraid of exposure to coronavirus and is in isolation, according to the South Koreans. Kim has appeared there for the last three years and last July, a large new villa was constructed there, as well as other buildings and two new roads. According to NK News, Kim apparently lives there most of the time. Last July 21, he voted in the local elections in the province of South Hamhung, which includes Hodo and from there, he supervised two missile tests that were conducted last year on July 25 and 31.

Original source, in Czech: novinky.cz

Two things stand out - first, the alleged video mentioned in the article….I’m wondering if that’s a black op by the CIA or other intel services designed to sow confusion and discontent among the North Korean population. Second of all, according to the purported video, it’s claimed that Kim Jong-un died on an inspection trip while giving advice….that’s how Kim Jong-il died, though defectors have said that he died of a massive heart attack in the midst of a screaming fit about some construction project or another. Nonetheless, I thought this was quite an interesting article.

And yeah, it’s unusual that we haven’t seen a fresh video of Kim Jong-un. I’d imagine it’d be nothing at all for a video crew to make their way to Wonsan and shoot a brief video of Kim saying, “Hey folks, I know you might’ve heard I’m dead or incapacitated or something, but that’s just Western black propaganda to get you shook. I’m fine, don’t fret and I’ll be back from vacation in a couple of weeks.” Naturally, this raises the question of why that hasn’t happened yet.

I don’t believe it’s going to be nearly as effective as some fear it will be. This story’s been circulating on social media and the gossip rags/blogs for weeks and yet Joe’s popularity is growing and his poll numbers continue to rise. It’s not a story that stands up to even routine scrutiny and relies almost entirely upon people being browbeaten into accepting her story or else labeled a “rape apologist.”

Something to keep in mind about the Reade “scandal”: The only thing really sustaining it right now is the infusion of new “witnesses” who saw nothing but remember Tara telling them all about it…after she got in contact with them recently.

By contrast, the usual means of sustaining a sex scandal story is by more and more victims coming forward to establish a pattern and reveal holes in any defenses offered.

The latter is something that usually ends up sinking even the most resilient of scumbags, the former eventually leads to questions about how everybody keeps remembering the exact same story and the exact same “facts” despite factors like the passage of time.

Non-comment at Wonkette:

“Well the good news from this horrific mass shooting, Jim, is that the final death toll is now only 22, instead of 28, on account of that family of five weren’t Floridians, but visiting New Yorkers, and the gunman who now officially hasn’t been killed in a shootout with Police because, again he’s from out of state.
So to summarize 22 Floridians shot dead, the police have no clear Floridian clues or leads so far, and the family of five from New York lying here, un breathing and drained of blood, probably can’t wait to get home to normal. Back to you in the studio!”

There’s another story behind that Land O’Lakes butter box (Goes to Indian Country Today), interviews with the family members of the Ojibwa artist who originally designed the logo and updated it over the years.

They are so over the faux outrage. Sometimes “cultural appropriation” is not that.

The artist is also famous for many other works which hang in museums and private collections across the country.

Somehow, 40 percent of people who filed for unemployment claims in Florida were denied benefits. That’s horrific, and we’ll yell at Florida later. Right now we want to praise a state with a mammal governor that’s done something decent.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that low-income families will soon receive up to $365 per child as part of a pandemic EBT program. According to the California Department of Social Services, about 3.8 million children rely on free or reduced-cost lunch from school cafeterias. That’s almost an entire Oklahoma of poor kids.

“Food insecurity” for children was a serious problem before the pandemic, but the number of Californians who are now seeking food assistance has increased by 60 percent since the state economy was cancelled.

We’ll never know what it’s like to be stinkin’ rich.

David Falk appeared on WFAN’s “Boomer and Gio,” where he discussed how picky his famous client was when it came to projects.

“I brought him a deal three years ago for $100 million. All he had to do was, other than giving his name and likeness, make a one two-hour appearance to announce the deal and he turned it down,” Falk said Wednesday, without providing any additional details on the deal.

Part of the job of a publicist is to plump for their client. Mr. Falk offers no evidence of this deal at all, who was allegedly hiring him, &c.

That’s not to say it didn’t happen, but damn $200 million is a lot of money. That said, if the GOP offered me $200 million to speak, I’d probably decline. If this deal actually existed, Mr. Jordan might have turned it down because he doesn’t align with whoever offered it.

re: #82 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

It was 3 years ago.

“I brought him a deal three years ago for $100 million. All he had to do was, other than giving his name and likeness, make a one two-hour appearance to announce the deal and he turned it down,”

Something about that deal had to suck big time for him to turn it down.

It doesn’t matter how long ago it was, that it’s real is mind-blowing.

I’m quite curious what that “deal” was. It had to be “wish Kim Jong Un a happy birthday” or “sing the national anthem at a KKK rally” kind of deal.

Yep I’d like to know what the product/event/cause he was expected to endorse for that amount of money as well. But as AM pointed out, it is also his publicists job to hype him and what better way to do that then float a alleged deal for $100 mil 3 years ago that he turned down. I:E My client is so rich and popular he can turn down a $100 mil deal on a mere whim.

My wife went on the Post Office Website. The ultra-hot pepper sauces and salsa have been shipped from Albuquerque and are now in Phoenix. The are expected to arrive at our post office on Monday.

I first read “my wife went postal on the office website”.

Carrot and red lentil soup today.

I am cleaning out leftovers, as I plan to leave on Monday to go visit girlfriend near Düsseldorf. She has been on vacation for the past week (works for the German Federal Reserve Bank and has to go into the office every other day as they can only transfer money from their main servers).

She has been symptom-free so far, so I will risk going to see her next week.

Christian pastor: If atheists can’t see coronavirus but believe it’s real, why don’t they believe in God? (Deadstate)

I don’t know, can we put him in a CRISPR unit, or see him under an electron microscope?

During a fiery sermon live-streamed on Facebook Sunday night, right-wing pastor and radio host E.W. Jackson had a few words for atheists, excoriating them for not believing in God because they can’t see him while believing in a virus that they also can’t see.

“Think about the irony of this,” he said. “Think about the irony of this. I’ve had people say things like this to me… Usually in comments, after I put out some live-stream event or something like that, here’s what they’ll say: ‘You know, you got fools who believe that some imaginary man in the sky, that they can’t see is gonna protect them, and yet, they’ll crawl off into a corner cringing over a virus that they can’t see.”

Jackson then paused dramatically.

“Now think about the irony of that.” he said. “You can’t see it! … They’re cringing in fear. … You tell them about God and (unintelligible) they don’t know that they need to be a lot more afraid of God than they are of this virus.”

Bullshit, Bishop. A variant of “no atheists in foxholes” argument.

Starting today I am supposed to wear a mask when outdoors:

Starting May 1, everyone must wear face coverings anywhere in public they come within 6 feet of another person, or whenever they enter a business. More details

Starting May 1, the County is relaxing more restrictions for parks and golf courses if they can enforce social distancing. Operators of a park or golf course need to create and post a plan for how they will do that.

The County will allow:

Parks to reopen parking lots, with limitations.
Park visitors to sit, lie down, picnic if they practice social distancing.
Members of a family or household to play active sports, such as basketball or volleyball.
However, park operators may have their own restrictions. Check before visiting.

Recreational boating on the ocean, bays and lakes is allowed for members of a household.

Golf courses that follow the safety protocol can reopen. Instruction and sit-down food service are not allowed. Golf carts are allowed only to meet ADA requirements.

Beach parking lots need to remain closed.

Cases continue to climb:

Last four slides of yesterday’s presentation shows that the % of tests coming out positive are very slowing coming down, and the hospitals are holding up well:

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Soggy and less windy this morning than last night when the winds were truly whipping about. It’s Friday, for those who are still managing to keep track. I guess we should be thankful a weekend is coming up, but I’m worried.

I’m worried that NJ is opening parks and golf courses too soon. People don’t really get social distancing even now, and mask usage is haphazard at best. I have seen all manner of mask fails - from not wearing it over the nose, or mouth, or both, or constantly moving/removing it, so I would counsel against going to them because there will be a crush of people looking to escape to anywhere that isn’t their home or immediate surroundings.

I’m worried that states that never truly implemented stay at home are seeing high death tolls that are being masked by misinformation and misidentified deaths that will only be sussed out in excess mortality examinations. Iowa and Florida are hot spots, and their governors are doing their worst to paper things over in the express desire to satisfy Trumpists who want to make money and don’t care how many people die of covid19 and stress our health care systems.

I’m worried that Trumpists and Berners are going to slag Biden over the Tara Reade claims, which has much sound and fury, but no actual evidence. There are no actual witnesses here to corroborate her statement. There’s hearsay, and even that is questionable because her stories have changed repeatedly. It’s her word, which isn’t exactly reputable, versus his. This is meant to defuse the sex predator claims against Trump - who has corroborated what more than 2 dozen women have accused him of doing - that he will grab women because he could get away with it.

She didn’t come forward when Obama nominated him as VP. This is a last gasp effort by Trumpists to smear Biden, and Berners have latched on thinking that this will somehow resuscitate his campaign. All the leading Democrats have gone all in on Biden. That’s how much credence people give to her claim. She hasn’t been silenced. She’s been given a platform by none other than the Fox/Trumpist crowd, and it’s not having a measurable effect on Biden, when Trump’s record includes 64,000+ dead Americans due to his miserable failure to act on covid19.

Further, we know Trump’s a perv who would go into the dressing areas to watch pageant contestants in a state of undress because he could. He palled around with Epstein. And don’t get me started on Trump’s racist/xenophobic actions and policies, which are now part of US policy. That’s his record, and it includes diverting critical funds to build his boondoggle wall while ignoring the covid19 threat and pandemic response.

This is Biden v. Trump, and it’s no contest. Biden would restore competency to the WH and restore our standing in the world community.

Well, I just watched the one-on-one Morning Joke set up between Biden and Mika. And you could have cut it in half by just editing out every time Mika circled back to the same question that he’d already given an answer to in order to make it appear as though he was avoiding giving a satisfactory answer.

It was a lesson in goal-post moving: He says the complaint would be in the NARA archives in the Senate, Mika asks why he won’t just allow a search of all his personal documents for any mention of Reade’s name.

He points out that he said women should be heard and their allegations investigated, but at the end of the day the truth matters, so Mika wants him to answer why he said women should “be believed” when Kavanaugh was being investigated.

And she tried to lead him to speculating on Reade’s motives, to which he (smartly) said he wasn’t going to question her, her motives, or in any way disparage her.

So the takeaway is likely going to be that Joe isn’t living up to the standard set during Kavanaugh, that he won’t accept that Reade is being truthful, and he’s got “something to hide” in his personal documents because he refuses to allow their release.

The issue at hand, as always, is what to do about the US media.

Every single outlet is going to butheremails this story, or some other story, for the next 7 months. It’s never going to stop. It will be headline news every day. Active malice on the part of editors and publishers has already installed a mad emperor once, by design. I see no reason why it will not work again, regardless of any action or inaction on the part of Democrats.

Like it or not sexual misconduct allegations made in the context of politics (as opposed to initially and clearly a complaint to police or hr) instantly become *political* issues.

And so are handled in political ways.

people want to use legal or otherwise sexual complaint handling criteria to what is now a political problem.

To copy from a DK diary:

Look, Biden is gonna win regardless of any attacks. In the real world, people have HAD IT. His polling just keeps better, not worse. People’s fears with this story reflects the widening split between reality-based actions of the base and the social-media driven melodramas of the extremes.

Lot’s of people know that the Republicans are going to throw everything they can at Biden. And a lot of people will ignore most of them. And if you have someone who is wondering about Reade’s allegations, just ask them what they think about the fact that her story matches a scene from her dad’s novel.

Charmingly Persistent  May 1, 2020 • 8:11:50am

When the press asked Hillary over and over and over about her emails, they said that if she just explained it really thoroughly they would be satisfied and the issue would go away. And she was endlessly patient and explained over and over in ever greater detail. And each detail fed another feeding frenzy. At the time I thought why can’t she just explain it once and refer everyone to her earlier statement when they ask again? Surely they would get bored with the same short answer every time.

So, today - I think that Biden should refer everyone to his earlier statement and not answer any more questions. There is nothing he can add, and he should say so. And the rest of us shouldn’t get drawn into slagging Tara Reade - we don’t know why she is doing this and it doesn’t matter. We should just say we don’t find the allegations credible and leave it at that.

I have little hope that this will happen. Liberals seem to be incapable of understanding that people are asking questions in bad faith. We just have to explain one more time because then they will finally understand. I wish we would get over that.

OK, didn’t like reading this today:

“The latest estimate, released on April 29th projected 72,433 cumulative deaths through August 4th - a range from 59,343 to 114,228. But as of this morning the Johns Hopkins University data tracker shows that 63,019 people have already died. And if we look at the data compiled by the COVID Tracking Project 13,252 of those have died (or at least been reported) in the last seven days.

If we assumed the unlikely hypothetically that the average death toll in the first half of May were one half what it was in the last 7 days of April, the United States would blow through the IHME total on May 10th, almost three months before model says it should.

I’m no statistician but this is seriously out of whack and what is striking to me is that the latest projections came out only two days ago, when these numbers were as obviously out of whack as they are this morning.”

As someone pointed out in the replies, Karl’s bullshit about ‘not making yourself the story’ ignores the fact that by attacking the media, not just questioning its legitimacy but questioning its loyalty as Americans wholesale, Trump’s already made them the story. Now the story is whether or not you actually fight back or acquiesce because you’re as afraid of that kind of charge as you are the ‘liberal media’ charge. That you feel the need to pay penance, but only to right wing attacks while dickkicking any and all Dems who might criticize you in a way that centers your reporting, rather than your personal allegiances.

But of course, what am I saying. Of course it’ll be this way. It’s always this way. Republican attacks are privileged because they’re the only rightful owners and rulers of this country and therefore get to decide who is a ‘Real American’ and who is an ‘Enemy of the People’, and reporters just have to grin and take it because if a Republican says it, it must be true.

Its revenues rose by nearly 7 percent to $64.4 billion. The company even found enough money lying around to continue buying back its own stock. This, of course, while millions of Americans lost their employer-provided health insurance due to mass layoffs. Meanwhile, the company just reported that its CEO, David Wichmann, received a 233 percent pay raise over the year prior: In 2019, he made more than $52 million, while Executive Chair Stephen Hemsley took home over $50 million himself.”

The former “Celebrity Apprentice” talent handler on what he saw behind the scenes.

NC: Trump gets off on using racist terms, especially if there are people around who happen to be of that particular minority. He seems to hate Puerto Ricans the most. I will leave it at that, but his policies after Hurricane Maria came of no surprise to me. He is basically trying to kill them, in my opinion.

NC: It matters because his incontinence stems from his decades of stimulant abuse and fast food diet. He pretends he’s the model of physical health, when instead his bodily functions are being dictated by his drug addiction—and he tries to cover it up. So it’s evidence of his incompetence, and one of the main reasons for the NDAs. The crew nicknamed CA “The Shitshow,” because he would soil himself during tapings, often after flying into a rage and cursing out the Script Dept. Because he couldn’t read a three-syllable word.

All the territories come to a common border point at the feeder.

I’ve seen that at bird feeders before. The males will do some jostling about and chase each other. The females just shrug at that and eat.

re: #143 Targetpractice

And anti-Trump as Morning Joe supposedly is, they’re primed to try to torpedo Biden as best they can since he’s the Democrat nominee.

I just came within an iota of starting what would inevitably turn into a flame war on Facebook among a group of friends (mainly fraternity brothers from the 1980s.)

One posted a link to a UPMC (Univ of Pittsburgh Medical Center) article (see below) where they say that the virus fatality rate is lower than the statistics and could be as low around 0.25% (i.e. 2.5x as bad as common flu.) He follows this up with a remark,

UPMC is a top 10 medical institution….and this is a respected doctor. He is arguing that the mortality rate of Covid is at or under 0.25% and that the majority of fatalities are those over 80 and living in nursing homes.

Sorry, with those kind of facts, it is hard to support the extreme lockdown we are experiencing.

I came very very close to asking him the following:
1. How many corpses is “too many”? Since if roughly 30% of the US populace gets the virus there will be 250,000 dead.

2. How fine is he with one of those over 80 fatalities being his mother? Does it change things when the deaths are those you know and not simply a statistic? (His mother’s birthday was yesterday.)

Doesn’t help that much of the “extreme lockdown” rhetoric started up when the state parks were closed and he couldn’t go fishing or kayaking anymore.

Edit: I also would have pointed out that his remark was that the rate was 0.25% or lower whereas the article said it could be as low as 0.25%. Nice trick to make his upper bound what the article said was a lower bound.

I have occasionally discussed what I call the Germanophile technology cult here. That is my term for the pop-culture trope that credits any and all innovations, especially in aviation and space, to the World War II era Germans. I believe in credit where it’s due but this kind of attribution goes far beyond anything that could be justified by facts and, worse, it is a staple among pop-culture consumers who otherwise know nothing about the subject.
I think it has now reached the ultimate: Yesterday I met a guy who thought rocket pioneer Robert Goddard was a German. I said, no, Goddard was an American. Now, one really disturbing characteristic of Germanophiles is the weasely desperation with which they cling to their position. He responded, “Uh, sure, he was naturalized, like von Braun, but he was a German scientist who was brought here to work for us after World War II.” I said, no, he was born in Worcester Massachusetts, his family came here from England in the 17th century, and he actually died before the end of World War II. Forced to accept that Goddard was in fact an American, he shifted ground and tried to denigrate Goddard’s achievements, an approach I also see from the authors of Goddard’s Wikipedia bio.
If they know little about Goddard and other American and British inventors, the Kultists know nothing of Sergei Korolev, just assuming that all Russian rocketry was a case of their German scientists vs. our German scientists. In fact, the Soviets got largely the second team from the roundup of German rocketeers, headed by one Helmut Gröttrup, who later did great things in data processing.
Gröttrup was nothing if not bold. After the war, he was trapped in the Soviet occupation zone and decided to go to work for the new masters. First though, he brazenly demanded 1500 American dollars a month (a fortune at the time), a new Cadillac car, and a luxury apartment in East Berlin for his services. He could have been shot out of hand, but he gambled that the Russians were desperate enough to accept. He was right and they did.
He and his group of about 170 other Germans returned to Germany in 1953, 4 years before Sputnik.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the campaign ordered “red, Trump-branded face masks” to either give or sell to supporters.

The move is part of a broader effort by the Trump campaign to control the narrative of the president’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The campaign, beginning Sunday, will also be airing television ads portraying Trump “as a strong leader during the pandemic,” the newspaper reported.

Trump is often seen donning his red MAGA hats, but it’s unclear if he would wear a face covering emblazoned with his name or slogan since he has refused to wear one of any kind thus far.

I just wrote this up on Facebook. Pretty stressed out here in sunny OKC, trying to focus on my first paid writing gig for a new remote client.
“We now have a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our multi-building apartment complex, which hits way too close to home for comfort. And for that extra spice, it’s an old woman who walks around the complex daily to keep an eye on things as a side job the past few months. And, she lives alone and won’t self-quarantine. And, she just had a fight with the handyman in the parking lot outside our front door because she wouldn’t stay six feet away from him let alone stay inside. (At least she was wearing a mask.) He told us that people in full body suits are cleaning out our mail room and other common areas daily. Apparently the woman was saying she won’t self-quarantine unless she’s receives a written order from some property board or some such. So, she’s clearly not making public health a priority. Yuck.”
We were planning on moving this summer from these temporary quarters, so we’ll see how it all shakes out. My wife and I both have multiple underlying risk factors (smoking histories, 50ish, weight and blood pressure issues for her, etc.) Not in my happy place, particularly when we discovered last night that our corner drive-thru burger choice doesn’t have a mask in sight for staff. Okies just aren’t getting into the pandemic groove.

What Joe Biden did right in rebutting Tara Reade’s claims

Political pundits will “grade” former vice president Joe Biden’s response to Tara Reade’s allegation that he digitally penetrated her more than 25 years ago. The campaign’s written statement was empathetic and respectful but definitive. Biden sat for a tough interview Friday without losing his cool. He was not angry or accusatory; he did not claim a conspiracy nor insult the accuser. He volunteered to open Senate papers (which he said are at the National Archives, not at the University of Delaware). In short, he did what an innocent person would do and say.

Bergen County NJ where I live has a confirmed per capita covid19 rate of 1,666 per 100,000 residents. Looking through the data, we see the following places with rates similar or above that level (all are county level):

Pickaway OH - 2981 per 100k
Seward KS - 2419 per 100k
Ford KS - 1991 per 100k
Blaine ID - 2203 per 100k
Dawson NE - 1923 per 100k
Hall NE - 1663 per 100k
Dakota NE - 3266 per 100k
Nobles MN - 3384 per 100k.
Rockland NY - 3594 per 100k (part of larger NYC metro and has significantly higher per capita rates than adjacent counties including all of NYC itself).

So while fatalities may be slowing in NY, cases are increasing elsewhere and the prevalence continues rising in places far from the coasts.

re: #320 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I recall an attempted “sting” operation on the Hillary campaign in 2008 when a Canadian woman was sent to buy a Hillary T-shirt, at which point she was accused to violating Federal election law by accepting campaign money from a foreign national.

Fast-forward to 2016 with the NRA laundering money from Russia to fund pro-Trump PACs…and….crickets.

I thought the sting operation occurred in 2016.

re: #319 lawhawk

I’m guessing that most of those are because of meat packing plants, which Trump and McConnell are bending over backwards to protect from closure or regulation.

So I’m kinda bothered by this. I’ve always loved the Pet This Dog account but lately it’s always a dog who has an Instagram account and it wreaks of petting for cash. It buns me out.

Chester County, PA COVID-19 stats as of yesterday.

Confirmed cases: 1470 (+58)
Total tests: 6910 (+239)
Deaths: 112 (+1)

Two townships were confirmed cases are over 0.75% of the population, and one is nearly to 1%.

Doubling rate is about 15 days. So it is flattening out, but not over the hump yet. Not the time to be reopening things in even a limited way in my opinion.

Puerto Rico yet again getting the short end of the stick.

Why should Trump bother signing checks for people who cannot even vote for him?

The owner of the twitter feed is self-isolating, so he’s not going out to pet dogs (I suspect his parents have a lot to do with that). So he’s just looking online for dogs he’d like to pet.

I know that. But it’s always a dog who has an Instagram account. Or just strikes me as profiteering… Or something. It makes me sad.

I’ve noticed a lot of the boxes have recommendations for additional ingredients.

I grew up on Hamburger Helper. It’s a comfort food, and no one can take it away from me.

I feel that way about Kraft Mac and Cheese. The original with the orange powder. As a kid, it was the first thing I was allowed to make, and I would make it for my dad.

Where else is he going to find dogs that aren’t picked up by WeRateDogs?

Oh I don’t know, I’m kinda digging it.

Oh, I am too… I just mean in the generic “incumbent seeking re-election” sort of way… that’s not where you want to be 6 months before the election

Isn’t ‘he’ a ‘she’? Not sure, but I think the owner of that Twitter account is a girl.
