“The revelation that the Russian government was converting billions of rubles to dollars via the same Deutsche Bank subsidiary that lent to Donald Trump adds further intrigue to President Trump’s finances and possible counterintelligence concerns.”

“…At the time of his inauguration, Donald Trump, his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner and companies under their control owed Deutsche Bank a combined $659 million-$699 million according to a Forensic News analysis. The vast majority, if not all of this money was owed to DBTCA specifically:

$364 million in loans to Donald Trump companies for properties in Chicago, Florida, and Washington, DC.
$285 million loan to Kushner Companies.
$5-25 million line of credit to Jared Kushner
$5-25 million line of credit to Ivanka Trump.

Trump and Kushner alone appear to comprise about 1.6%-1.7% of DBTCA’s entire portfolio, which has total assets of $40 billion. Kushner’s mother also has a line of credit with Deutsche Bank, worth up to $25 million.”

The look on that poor cat’s face! (The cat also reminds me of my late lamented Xena, who was my buddy and I still miss her.) It freaks me out.

There are responsible gun owners, and then there are these dicks, who threaten everyone around them. Right now the dicks seem to be overwhelming the responsible people.

I’ve been trying to figure out this whole pointing guns at dicks thing.

I have so many questions, among them:

1. Why?
2. Seriously?
3. Really?
4. But, really, seriously?
5. Why don’t they really own the libs and pull the trigger?

Gotta say that the replies to it are rather…telling. The chiding and scolding about how rioting delegitimizes the protests and whatnot.

It’s kind of telling that MLK Jr., in life, never condoned but also never truly condemned riots. As he put it, “Riots are the language of the unheard”. And he found it more important to focus on ‘why are they rioting, and what needs to be fixed there’ rather than falling into the civility trap of the moderate in having to feel the need to condemn the riot just to gain enough respectability currency to have his message considered.

The only problem with riots is that they give the milquetoast cover, but that’s not the fault of the rioters.

re: #232 Hecuba’s daughter

An IRL doctor acquaintance has posted on FB that temperature is not a particularly useful measure for determining whether you have the coronavirus. But, IMHO, it is useful for detecting illness and therefore, if elevated, it’s best that the person isn’t at work anyway.

Temperature can help identify if it’s elevated that you could be infectious. The course I took on contact tracing was (if you’ve tested positive) you should stay home until you have no temperature for three days (without any drugs that help reduce fever). 10 days minimum, but longer if you still have a fever.

All these libertarians claiming Twitter can be sued for fact-checking or banning people because “they are a publisher” (Narrator: By law, they are not) leaves out hundreds of years of newspapers, radio stations, and television stations not printing or reading what every wingnut down through the ages had to say.

I’m actually surprised it’s more libertarians arguing about Twitter than conservatives.

Libertarians are free to fuque off all the way to Gab if that’s what they want, start their own microblog, fire up their own television network.

You know you crossed the line when the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police condemns the brutality of your policing:

(Chief) Partridge said he had this reaction when he first saw the video of Floyd’s arrest: “I was totally sick at my stomach. I really thought I was going to throw up.”

“This type of behavior is not taught. When you have somebody do that to another human being after they’re restrained, now you can use the amount of force necessary to affect an arrest, but once those handcuffs go on, it stops because that subject is in custody,” he said. “Anything after that is uncalled for and unjustified.”

Actually, I think, the first questions about vote-by-mail arose during the Civil War: I think it was US Grant who was concerned about his (Union) troops not being able to vote in the field, and figured out ways to get ballots certified and sent back to the various states. So if they could get votes in and counted in 1864, by muleback, I imagine, with the aid of 21st-Century technology, we can manage OK…..

As far as I know, all of the looting and vandalism has been in other parts of St. Paul and in some N & E suburbs (and of course all over Minneapolis), but there’s a fire station about 4 blocks from my house that has been dispatching, and cops are travelling all over the city.

Zucker’s on the same trip as wingnuts:

admit what you think and do doesn’t work for anyone else, and that you’re wrong, or destroy all meaning so that you can maintain plausible deniability that the consequences of your choices aren’t really consequences

Any social movement that calls for accountability, or that looks at systems of power, is going to be (1) critical of Facebook as both a disinfo system and an intelligence gathering operation, (2) observe that Zuck throughout his life showed a disregard for other people and his success is directly tied to choices that are anti-social, starting with his behavior at Harvard.

If Zuck insists he is both intelligent and has moral license to dictate to others—and his behavior in the public sphere suggests he sees himself as such—in spite of the reality of what he’s done, and the reality of how Facebook makes money, and the reality of the social system impact of Facebook…there’s nowhere for him to go but to side with the nihilists.

If Trump had any principles (I know, I crack myself up) he’d delete his twitter account and move his battle with fake news onto Facebook. But he won’t. Not just because he doesn’t have any principles (beyond, Trump good) but because twitter is tailor made for his lack of attention span and need for immediate gratification.

OK: anybody with a better handle on the legalese able to clue me in as to what this jibber-jabber actually means? And obviously, the Office of the Asshole-in-Chief has had someone who knows what they’re doing work on this: BUT: AFAICT, it’s basically

1. High-sounding boilerplate about “freedom”

2. A few juvenile, petty personal gripes: I mean, really, does shit like

Twitter now selectively decides to place a warning label on certain tweets in a manner that clearly reflects political bias. As has been reported, Twitter seems never to have placed such a label on another politician’s tweet. As recently as last week, Representative Adam Schiff was continuing to mislead his followers by peddling the long-disproved Russian Collusion Hoax, and Twitter did not flag those tweets. Unsurprisingly, its officer in charge of so-called ‘Site Integrity’ has flaunted his political bias in his own tweets.

really belong in an Executive Order?

3. Vague inferences and admonitions for the DoJ to “study” shit for its “bias” - though without saying much about what they’re actually going to DO.

And, related to that, : even though I am very much NAL, I can see a number of charges to Justice that might quickly end up in court (the whole thing, might, but then again, I doubt whether this EO is really meant to have hard legal ramifications: it reads like a lawyerly, tricked-up version of Trump’s typical Twitter rants and egocentric gripe-fests). Am I off base here?

That’s the way it read to me. I was tossing it out there to see if someone better-educated than me could make legal sense of it.

George Floyd, fired officer overlapped security shifts at south Minneapolis club (KTSP channel 5, Minneapolis)

It appears both George Floyd and the fired officer who killed him both worked for the same club as security guards, according to its former owner.

If that’s the case, the officer knew who he was killing.

A former club owner in south Minneapolis says the now-fired police officer and the black man who died in his custody this week both worked security for her club up to the end of last year.

George Floyd and now-former Officer Derek Chauvin both worked security at the El Nuevo Rodeo club on Lake Street, according to Maya Santamaria. Santamaria owned the building for nearly two decades, but sold the venue within the last few months.

“Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open,” Santamaria said. “They were working together at the same time, it’s just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside.”

The number of ways the Republicans are destroying democracy is mind-boggling. Fuck.

One of the only federal checks on campaign contributions is being done away with by the Trump administration. A new policy, which is set to go into effect on Thursday, takes away the responsibility of some nonprofits to disclose who their biggest money donors are. Up until now this has been one of the only ways for our country to try and keep foreign money and interests out of our elections. The fact that Trump—someone with a long history of foreign money backing—is making sure it’s easier for foreign money to leak into our election process is not surprising, just depressing. So this Robby Soave thinks that Twitter’s “fact check” of Trump’s BS is an “own goal” FOR THEM???

I dunno, from where I sit (fortunately still in the Realm Of Sanity*), Trump losing his shit over Twitter’s calling him out (and worse, being correct!) doesn’t seem likely to make him look the least bit better to anyone not already in the RWNJ Trump Cult. For one, it’s spotlighted his longstanding history of “publishing” false/misleading/lying/overblown statements; for another, it’s revealed him as a thin-skinned wannabe dictator (more so than usual), threatening the “free press” with vague “retaliation” for daring to question his opinion - with facts, no less; and spotlighted - yet again - his inane habit of casting virtually any and every issue in the language of the cheapjack RW media. I know “mileage varies” on the Internet, but Robby’s got the take 180° off IMO……

Not according to all the conservative legal scholars in that thread; they say it’s self-defence (to turn around and try to run someone down), or justification for jumping on her car.

For the latter, the old conservative line can be thrown back at them: We need the context. Why is he on her car? If she showed willingness to try to kill him before, maybe the part we missed is her trying to run him over the first time. Jumping on a car helps avoid being run over.

The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Michele Bachelet has condemned the killing of Mr. George Floyd, and more broadly, the continued killing of unarmed African-Americans.

US must take ‘serious action’ to halt police killings of unarmed African Americans (United Nations Press Office)

The UN human rights chief on Thursday condemned the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd while in police custody in the city of Minneapolis, calling it the latest in “a long line of killings of unarmed African Americans by US police officers and members of the public”.

“I am dismayed to have to add George Floyd’s name to that of Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and many other unarmed African Americans who have died over the years at the hands of the police - as well as people such as Ahmaud Arbery and Trayvon Martin who were killed by armed members of the public”, said High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, in statement.

I remember the London riots of 2011, in which the whole “civility” and “respect for property” thing was broached. Meanwhile it came out that Tory PM Tony Cameron was a member of an Oxford “Dining Club” whose idea of fun was to have a raucous night out, trash the restaurant and then have daddy pay for the damages…

“What? Oh, no, no, I don’t see anything in that video that would be murder.”

“So then you think they should be fired and barred from ever wearing a badge again?”

“Hey now, let’s not going destroying anybody’s life! They got families to look after and bills to pay! Can’t go taking away their livelihood.”

“…so what do you think should happen?”

“Well, obviously this needs to be investigated and if something was found to violate department policy then they need to be disciplined. We gotta wait for all the facts to come out!”

“In other words, you want the white cops to skate on this because there might be something the black man did to justify letting him die.”

“WHY YOU GOTTA BRING RACE INTO THIS?! I AGREED THEY MIGHT HAVE DONE SOEMTHING WRONG, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!”

If Trump were assassinated, I would not be unhappy. I think it would be the worst possible thing that could happen because it would be incredibly destablizing at this particular time with the COVID-19 and racial unrest, and all the chaotic roads that lead straight back to Trump.

I mean, imagine, Trump becoming a martyr, and all those 3 percenter MAGA bots seeking to avenge the murder of their great leader. Imagine who would be blamed for it? Muslims? Black Lives Matter activists? an-TEE-fa?

So it’s not something I would ever advocate (that’s for the Secret Service, if you’re reading), because I think things would get A LOT worse than they are now, and they’re pretty fucking bad now.

But if he were to be successfully popped and sprayed across a bathroom mirror like the pimple he is, for a short moment I would breathe a sigh of relief, and hope that he is placed face down in his casket so he can see where he’s going.

And then I’d gird up for a post-Trump America.

Unless @jack caves on this (which, given Twitter’s history on shit like this, seems like a 50/50 shot, even on these two absolutely heinous and inflammatory posts of Trump’s), these posts are basically in a digital version of a amber block: frozen in time for all to see, all alone on their own.

278
The Ghost of a Flea  May 29, 2020 • 12:50:53am

Twitter may…may…be waking up to the fact that Trump is never going to stop working them over and threatening them with government power.

The president will never, ever stop because it’s not even about a specific goal after which he’s won, it’s about constant needy demands for greater compliance precisely because he will not accept socially-impose constraints on his behavior. He will not respect Twitter terms of service; he will not accept government rules that should stymie his partisan and bigoted messages; he rejects the Constitutional right to free speech if it stops him from using available power to get what he wants.

It will be interesting to see what happens next, because Trump…as a narcissistic abuser at full crescendo…won’t stop pushing boundaries, and even if he’s convinced in the short term to stop he will eventually circle back to the issue with even greater vehemence precisely because being stymied means those that defied him deserve more harm.

Exactly like with German national socialism, Trumpian fascism is ultimately nihilistic—acquiring like adornments and discarding them thoughtlessly as it pursues a vague sense of superiority—and self defeating. There is no coming to terms, no path that keeps the company safe. If Twitter in the near future blinks and says “yes” to Trump, he will simply demand more, and more, and more, until either there is nothing left—Twitter will become a state organ de facto—or the company must say “no.”

Unfortunately, companies don’t have a great record with this kind of shit, so who the fuck knows what happens.

if they could get these things to the place where I could get a full recharge in roughly half an hour, I’d seriously consider buying electric. But it’s not real practical to go from here to Vermont and know that it’s gonna take me 3 days because I’m gonna have to stop for 3 hours every 200 miles.

The new Axis of Evil.

Trump spews lies, hate and conspiracies.

Fox dutifully repeats them.

Facebook microtargets them to millions of voters—and gets paid to do it.

Goebbels would be jealous.

Don’t forget most of the lies that Trump spouts are based what he has just seen on Fox in the first place.

But again, as long as so many people rely on Social Media as a source of news on politics and current events, once can only despair for the future of the Republic

There was once a system under consideration under which you simply stop at a charging station, drop off your empty battery and replace it with a charged one…in about the same time it would take to fill up your tank or even less.

Never heard what came of that.

Needless to say, these are all things we could have had in place years ago if we had committed the resources to it.

The governors can send in armed NG troops. If they’re federalized, they have to be disarmed “assistance”, or they slam into posse comitatus. At the Hurricane Andrew and Katrina responses, only the FL and LA guardsmen had ammo. (In FL, gangstas set a goal of separating the federalized NGs from their weapons.)

Fuck Trump, Fuck the GOP, and fuck all the enabling media hacks who give equal weight to Trumpists and those who call out their bulkshit.

Prosecutors indict suspects all the time for crimes alleged. They do so even before the investigations are complete. That’s how you get superseding indictments.

You can arrest and hold suspects who are a danger to society. A cop killer is held in custody even before indictments are issued.

A cop who murders someone even before they’re arrested should likewise be arrested - they too are a threat to society.

What we know about the cop involved - the one who had his knee on the neck of Floyd is that he’s a repeat offender - he has repeatedly been the focus of complaints, but the bulk of those abuse complaints were never investigated or acted on.

What would mitigate against indictments or arrests of these cops? Abso-fucking-lutely nothing.

That the prosecutor refuses to indict or hold the cops behind bars is another way that the system is fixed. There’s one standard for cops. There’s another for persons of color. There’s another for anyone who isn’t a person of color.

Prosecutors often have a cozy relation to law enforcement. They rely on them heavily in every phase of prosecuting defendants - from the arrest to the investigation - to testifying at trial. They give them deference, knowing that they need cooperation to do their job.

But cops should actually be held to an even higher standard. They have training, expertise, and have the authority to use deadly force when circumstances require.

They were not required here. Just the opposite. And that’s why they should face murder charges and be under arrest.

He needs one crisis - and race riots - to deflect/distract from his massive failure to deal with covid19 that’s destroyed the US economy, caused 25% unemployment, and killed over 103,000 Americans.

This is all he ever does. He doesn’t have solutions to anything. He has vaporware and empty platitudes. And when pushed, he doesn’t even have that - only excuses and blaming others for his failures.

since strong the equation strong economy = reelection is no longer applicable, he needs another formula.

There appears to be absolutely nothing Trump does or fails to do that would move his average in either direction.

And that’s distressing given that he’s destroyed the economy and overseen the disastrous covid19 response killing +100k Americans.

So his strategy is to keep as many of the remaining 57.4% of voters as far away from the polls as possible, at least in the key EC states…

Sorry, I thought you were talking about Mitt Romney. I do not understand what Joe Walsh’s game is at all.

He was a one term Congressman from Chicagoland who won by a few hundred points in the Tea Party wave, IIRC. He then parlayed his time into being a talking head.

I’d say it’s one of:
- He’s realized that his former associates were actually fascists, and not merely “normal” ultra right wing patriots, at least by his internal line in the sand. If it’s this, then he’ll try to promote non-fascist right wingers soon enough after Donnie and his enablers are out, and get a gig on Fox as they try to pivot…

- He knows how to convert his communications style in $$$ and decided that he could have a better audience telling people as a Republican they should vote for the Democrat. If this is the case, he’ll be a new regular conservative talking head/regular on CNN/MSNBC/the like…

Or he’s going to write a book, but he might do that in either case.
I’m leaning to the former, because he’s more visibly contrite about his former actions than other Never Trumpers.

“It’s Like, ‘Fuck You, America’”: Aided by the Fed’s Cheap Money, Carl Icahn Is Exiting Herbalife and Making a Killing
The legendary investor basically controls Herbalife, which just issued $600 million in junk bonds, enabling it to buy back stock—much of it likely Icahn’s—for a healthy profit in the midst of a pandemic. by William D Cohan

Like Donald Trump, Icahn is from Queens, although he’s from the Jewish side of the tracks. Still, he’s been friends with Trump for decades, ever since he cut a deal—when The Donald’s Atlantic City casinos were going bankrupt in 1990s—that allowed Trump to continue to have a role in their operation and to keep getting paid, when by all rights Trump should have been fired. Icahn bought Trump Entertainment Resorts out of bankruptcy in 2016. When Trump became president, he rewarded Icahn’s loyalty to him by making Icahn an adviser to him on regulatory reform, essentially putting the fox in the henhouse. Icahn quit that role in August 2017 days before a New Yorker article documented his various potential conflicts of interest and how he was allegedly using his assignment with Trump to feather his own nest.

I have this mental image right now of Trump furiously switching back and forth between two phones for his own Twitter account and the White House account while nearly hyperventilating.

The Most Mendacious President in U.S. History
On Trump, his Twitter lies, and why it’s getting worse. The New Yorker.
by Susan G Glasser

I can’t remember if I got directed to this article from here: probably! If so, I apologize for stepping on someone. But I found this interesting:

The conclusion from all of this is as depressing as it is damning. These are not standard-issue political lies being foisted on the public but nuclear-weapons-grade falsehoods that speak directly to the President’s character. They are of a scale and volume that simply defy precedent, even in a country that had Richard Nixon as its leader. Trump, the Fact Checker’s editor Glenn Kessler writes, is quite simply “the most mendacious President in U.S. history.” There are, sadly, eighteen thousand reasons and counting why he is right.

Susan B. Glasser, a staff writer, was the founding editor of Politico Magazine. In May, she will publish, with Peter Baker, “The Man Who Ran Washington.”

the FCC chair is your man Ajit Pai. he doesnt think this is how any of this works.

even if Pai all of a sudden went full toadie, 25 years of case law is against trump’s position

he is trying to create new law through EO while ignoring said case law. oh, and there’s this thing called congress. if he took this to court he’d get laughed out, if not smacked in the puss first.

oh, and that pesky first amendment. the public interest vs your personal political motivations. good luck with that.

If 230 was revoked, the worst thing that could happen to Twitter related to Trump is that they would have to delete and block Trump.

Brings back memories of a round of dozens in Gary Indiana, between my neighbors Melvin Gates and Patrick Melaine ca 1968:

Melvin: “Y’all look like a dead dog’s dukey!”
Patrick: “Y’all look like a dead dog’s dukey chute!”

Melvin: “Yo’ mama look like superman and yo’ father look like Rin-Tin-Tin!”

Sorry, I thought you were talking about Mitt Romney. I do not understand what Joe Walsh’s game is at all.

Joe Walsh started turning against Trump in December 2016 after threatening violence in October if Hillary won. He is motivated by foreign policy and Trump’s affinity for Putin. I am confident that he would have been fine with every domestic policy Trump has adopted — but have no doubt that his hatred of all things Trump is motivated exclusively by Trump’s actions on the world stage, especially his obeisance to Putin and dictators worldwide.

1. He reads a prepared statement in a monotone fashion, mispronouncing every other word (only if his staff has sufficiently sedated him).

From Val Demmings, former cop and current Rep:

As a nation, we must conduct a serious review of hiring standards and practices, diversity, training, use-of-force policies, pay and benefits (remember, you get what you pay for), early warning programs, and recruit training programs. Remember, officers who train police recruits are setting the standard for what is acceptable and unacceptable on the street.

Law enforcement officers are granted remarkable power and authority. They are placed in complicated and dangerous situations. They respond to calls from people with their own biases and motives… As law enforcement officers, we took an oath to protect and serve. And those who forgot — or who never understood that oath in the first place — must go. That includes those who would stand by as they witness misconduct by a fellow officer.

Everyone wants to live in safer communities and to support law enforcement and the tough job they do every day. But this can’t go on. The senseless deaths of America’s sons and daughters — particularly African American men — is a stain on our country. Let’s work to remove it.

Time magazine calling it the way it is:

When in a recent tweetstorm Donald Trump suggested that four Congresswomen of color leave the U.S. and “go back” to the “totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” social media exploded. Outrage. Even some news outlets finally let go of the euphemisms and called the tweets “racist.” The Republicans, on the other hand, were quiet. As well they would be. The ideological demographics of the party dictated it.

The GOP’s membership is nearly 90 percent white and can only envision carnage and extinction as it looks upon a rights-based, religious, racial and ideologically diverse America. Or, as Lindsey Graham had noted as early as 2012, “We’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”

In short, the United States of America is not really their America. They yearn for a white republic. That’s why they are fighting to recreate the days when, as Archie Bunker sang, “Guys like us, we had it made.” That’s why they’ve willingly gone along with and participated in a sustained attack on the country itself, allowing it to grow weaker so that they could feel stronger.

Already, Trump and the Republicans have severely harmed the institutional heft of checks-and-balances. But they’re not done. America’s international reputation and influence rest on enormous economic and military strength, as well as the intangible but all-important “soft power” brought on by a robust democracy. All three pillars are necessary to sustain America’s nearly global respect and position, yet — and this was the rub — all three are increasingly dependent on more than just whites in the United States to build and sustain. For white America to exist, America must die. And the Republicans have made their choice.

time.com

And there you have it. The GOP is determined to destroy the United States of America in order to create a whites-only nation, an ethnostate where they - and they alone - will rule forever.

The GOP must be destroyed. The Republicans are the domestic enemies the Constitution refers to. And it’s time we start saying it loud and clear, in plain and unambiguous language.

Just think , how terrible is Donald Trump that his racism is now effectively being used to draw attention away from the thousands still locked in cages due to his bigotry; from the 100,000+ who are dead of the disease unleashed by his negligence; & from the 40 million unemployed because of his incompetence…

Dunno how effective it actually is, Arch.

I think people are looking at all of it and reacting with revulsion.

But I continue to be disgusted but not surprised that not a single Republican besides Mitt Romney has even raised their voice a tiny little bit.

The ‘effectively’ part was left over from a different starting point to that line; I forgot to double-check, changed now.
And you’re right, it’s not effective. How bad is it that he doesn’t seem to get that at all, or that his enablers in the GOP are silent, either out of fear of his retaliation or out of support…

Drive by - cops driving through a crowd, and then let loose with tear gas/pepper spray for no other reason than because they could.

This officer should be fired. And everyone in the chain of command reprimanded and retraining required for all.

This isn’t policing. It’s state-sanctioned terrorism.

Leni Reifenstahl was Hitler’s favorite filmmaker. So there were women who could advance in the Nazi regime.
