The driver of a Chevy Camaro who sped through Lincoln on Interstate 80 early Monday was arrested after a chase in which officials say the Camaro topped 155 mph.About 12:25 a.m., a Nebraska State Patrol trooper spotted a westbound Camaro speeding on I-80 in Lincoln. At that point, the patrol said, the trooper clocked the car at 128 mph in a 65-mph zone.
The trooper tried to stop the Camaro, the patrol said, but the driver sped up and fled.
After a 10-minute chase, other troopers put down stop sticks to slow the car, which came to a halt west of Lincoln. The driver, a 33-year-old man from Hinesville, Georgia, was taken into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of willful reckless driving and flight to avoid arrest before he was taken to the Lancaster County Jail.
Over the weekend, state troopers who work out of the Omaha office posted on Twitter that they had stopped drivers going 112, 118 and 133 mph.

IOWA CITY (AP) — University of Iowa students and several bars in Iowa City are facing criticism after throngs of young adults were seen crowded together outside and within the venues — most without masks — just hours before in-person classes were to start Monday at the university and many Iowa K-12 schools.
Iowa City police took a complaint just after 1 a.m. Sunday that several bars were all over capacity and not enforcing a mask mandate, the Gazette reported.
A reporter with the Gazette also checked several bars around midnight and confirmed that most did not appear to be enforcing social distancing inside or mask wearing ordered by Iowa City’s mayor.
The scene came only a day after university officials issued a campus message reminding students to wear face coverings in accordance with city and county mandates and to keep at least 6 feet apart when possible.

The State of Texas deserves the utmost condemnation from the entire civilized world for its policy of forcing elderly and severely at-risk “essential workers” to stay at their jobs through the Covid pandemic. Many have died because of this. People who were laid off by their employers can refuse to return to work if they are severely at risk and still receive unemployment but those who were not laid off in the first place could not, and cannot, voluntarily leave their jobs and claim unemployment no matter how great their risk. This is fucking inhuman, yet neither political party has addressed it at all. State affiliated medical personnel are under strict orders not to assist these people in claiming unemployment, for example by recommending quarantine. Essential workers, especially the low paid and high risk ones, are just not even human in this state. I intend to raise bloody hell over this until someone in power pays attention.

I get the impression it’s more Republicans politicising a pandemic, so there is a lot of FUD, combined with the usual sense of YOLO.

Ahh yes, that familiar ambiance of Eau De Skunk. A cloying reminder of what lurks in the darkness outside.
Years back, a colleague who lived in Loudoun County, Va was taking a nap in the living room of his brand new house. On his brand new couch. He heard the dog barking on their front porch and went to open the door. As did his wife and teenage son.
The son got there first, opened the door and the dog came running in, as expected. Just as the other critter on the porch, an apparently irritated skunk, let loose. The dog who was the original target received a significant amount of the skunks ‘wrath’, fled into the living room, over the oriental rug, and proceeded to hide under their brand new and expensive couch.
They lost most of their living room furniture. It was gently suggested by her employer that the wife maybe take a week off. And nobody really wanted to work in the cubicles next to the husband’s for several days.

Yes, I also find it easy to get overwhelmed by the news, the absolute stupidity and malice, and then get depressed.
As mentioned earlier by C1nnabar, one good solution is to just get moving. Find something that is important to you and just start working on it.
Another option is to bring in one’s circle of control by recognizing that one only has control over oneself and not much else. I try to minimize contact with the stupidity as there is only one of me and an infinite supply of stupidity.
Stonekettle has an ongoing gag. It started out as “You can’t fix stupid”. But has morphed. Currently it is at “You can fix stupid, but it ruins the carpets”.

Very true.
As a teenage boy at a boy scout camp in the northern Pennsylvania woods, I had quite a few close encounters with skunks. I was very fortunate to not get sprayed at all. I did find most of the skunks were actually pretty mellow. They even would warn us, in their skunk way, before they would spray.
re: #71 ckkatz
I think they’re charming little creatures. And they seem to like people too. Not into exotics, but I do think a skunk would be a lovely pet.
I see them occasionally, wandering the campus. If you don’t approach them, they won’t bother you. (And rabies is another hazard of approaching skunks, so don’t.)
Many years ago, when I was growing up in Pennsylvania, it was legal to catch and keep raccoons and skunks as pets.
I never knew anybody that had a skunk as a pet. Presumably they were descented.
The kids I knew who had raccoons found out that they were really cute pets until they reached sexual maturity. Then the call of the wild proved irresistible to them. All the kids who had them quickly found that a 40lb close relative of the bear was not going to be deterred in following its destiny.
I don’t think keeping those critters as pets is legal anymore in Pa.

I did want to mention that there was a Hungarian psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi who spent a lot of time thinking about the idea of happiness and concluded that it was a state of hyperfocus that he called ‘flow’. He wrote about this in his book, also called “Flow”.
In an interview with Wired magazine, Csíkszentmihályi described flow as “being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.

Africa is to be declared free from wild polio by the independent body, the Africa Regional Certification Commission.
Polio usually affects children under five, sometimes leading to irreversible paralysis. Death can occur when breathing muscles are affected by the paralysis.
There is no cure but the polio vaccine protects children for life.
The disease is now only found in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last African country to be declared free from the disease, having accounted for more than half of all global cases less than a decade ago.

I suspect that if Trump does indeed lose badly this November - and takes the GOP down in flames with him - there’s gonna be a purge in the Republican Party. And that will probably end up splitting them into the classic establishment GOP with the pro-Trump faction perhaps leaving to form their own party and then the two will be locked into a near-perpetual struggle.

The MAGAts won’t abandon the GOP, they’ll do as they’ve been doing since they were Tea Partiers: Blame the “establishment” for sabotaging Trump, saying the leadership never really wanted him in the first place, and run Quacks in 2022/2024 to purge the party of “liberal” influence.
I don’t take credit for this observation

There are many jokes that cannot be made.
“Twelve More Years” by Jeff Sharlet, Vanity Fair
The media shrugs, yet again, as Trump makes extremist comments. It’s just a “provocation”—until it isn’t.
…
We tell ourselves Trump is too lazy, too incompetent, too fixated by his own image on the screen to look past it to fascism. Not just the gestures—those he’s already proved himself capable of—but the real deal, the full-fledged authoritarianism he’s teased in Portland and on the border and nearly every time he takes the podium. And it’s true—Trump lacks the drive of Mussolini or the will of Putin. He won’t seize that kind of power. He’s not actually that bold. But he’ll take it if he can. If it’s easy. Inertia, the tendency of things in motion to remain in motion, will carry him there if we don’t apply friction every inch of the way.

Pretty brutal for USA Today.
As of Monday, the first day of the 2020 convention, more than 177,00 Americans had died of COVID-19. During the evening, Trump and his supporters tried to paint his botched response as a managerial masterpiece. His son proclaimed: “The President quickly took action and shut down travel from China.” No, the travel ban was late and porous. Trump dithered and dissembled as the virus spread. And now the best that Donald Jr. can brag about is that his father closed one porthole on the Titanic.
Lots of speakers talked about Trump’s success with the economy. Yeah, right. He has created a lot of jobs … for gravediggers.

“Twelve More Years” by Jeff Sharlet, Vanity Fair
up to now we assumed, yes assumed, that everyone in government was more or less playing by the same set of accepted rules, customs, norms, that we all thought were underpinned by the general rule of law, the constitution, three co-equal branches, separation of powers etc.
That checks and balances were inherent, would be respected and actually worked.
and that no one, let alone an entire political party with well established history, would turn its back *all at the same time* and ignore all that.
while it may have been a ‘goal’ it wasnt an actual detailed plan or a concerted effort. it just sort of happened under trump. they all caved. and the codependent press gave them cover.
we have learned that without the cooperation - the buying in to the idea of how our government works and should work - there is not much that can be done to stop dishonesty, thievery, fraud, cronyism, nepotism, and myriad other violations of law and the constitution.
Rumor has it that Kimmy-G dumped Junior and has taken a new lover.

Animator Walt Kelly, born August 25, 1913, was no favorite of J.Edgar Hoover, or the majority of Americans loathe to self-reflection, whose only entertainments offer the forced jollity of laugh-track inanities, in a progress of profit. I’m with Pogo. pic.twitter.com/KsZ8coyBvL

There’s a statue in this town of a scene from Pogo. I sometimes think I have found civilization.

Kim embodies the American Dream…of being a diversity hire at Faux because you’re an “immigrant” from Puerto Rico.
Plus it’s a way to give Gavin Newsom a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Pretty much sums up the first day of the RNC in a nutshell…
If there was ever a photo like that as part of the DNC, there would be 100000 Sunday sermons about the demonic nature of the Democratic party.

Interesting. I wonder if it’s low because it’s a relatively new subgenre?
So I called Illinois to confirm my ex Pat vote by mail and I’m all set.
We have to fill out the ballot and sign the envelope. Not the ballot, the envelope.
People need to know how to do this for their state.
I’m going to UPS it back and confirmed that’s acceptable as long as I put the signed envelope in the UPS package.

The Guard was sent in, uninvited, Gov. Brown had some meetings and made some calls, and they left. If you do it again, use your own money, Mr. *President.
THIS IS AN IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE
You know. In case anyone cares about that anymore. https://t.co/QRLE0T094W— Kaz Weida (@kazweida) August 25, 2020
“…When aides have suggested that some orders are illegal or unworkable, Trump has suggested he would pardon the officials if they would just go ahead, aides said. He has waved off worries about contracting procedures and the use of eminent domain, saying “take the land,” according to officials who attended the meetings.
“Don’t worry, I’ll pardon you,” he has told officials in meetings about the wall.
“He said people expected him to build a wall, and it had to be done by the election,” one former official said.”
Trump fantasized openly about gassing, shooting, maiming migrants at Mexico border, says DHS insider https://t.co/OHwnfLu5MJ
— Xeni Jardin (@xeni) August 25, 2020
“…The national security official couldn’t get through a meeting “without him doing 20 tangents, becoming irascible, turning red in the face, demanding a diet Coke, spewing spit,” Taylor explained. “Literally out of goddamn nowhere, he’d be like, ‘You know, who’s just my favorite guy? The MyPillow guy. Do any of you have those pillows?’”
When it came to the border wall, Trump would dream up “sickening” medieval plots “to pierce the flesh” of migrants, rip all the families apart, “maim,” and gas them, Taylor claims. “This was a man with no humanity whatsoever,” Taylor says. “He says, we got to do this, this, this, and this, all of which are probably impossible, illegal unethical,” Taylor recalls, but he was writing them down as the president spoke. “And he looks over me and he goes, ‘you fucking taking notes?’”

First night of GOP convention delivers nearly six times more views than start of Democrats’ event on C-SPAN livestream thehill.com
Is that not a bit like comparing apples and oranges. After all, the buzz around the DNC- that it showed that virtual Conventions could work, and work really well- it built up during the week.
Before the DNC, virtual Conventions were an unknown quantity, so of course you would expect the “ratings” at the start to be low.
I think it’s pretty dubious to compare “ratings“ on a genre, which, so far, only has two entries, but I’d say look at the overall trajectory. Is the RNC “ratings” on a downward slope?

RNC Day 1 was packed with lies cynicism, general BS, and hate. As such, was effective. Too many liberals make the mistake the ugliness of Trumpism for failed messaging. The ugliness is the message that brought him to power.

White House Insider: Trump Wanted to ‘Maim’ Immigrants
Here’s a half hour podcast with Miles Taylor, the former chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security talking with Molly Jong-Fast & Rick Wilson. The quotes came from this interview. Miles and Rick are laughing about how awful it was to work for Trump. IOKIYR. The info in the interview is horrifying and there should have been enough insiders to apply the 25th amendment if any of them gave a shit about doing anything but save their jobs.
