Local Nashville reporter:
Nashville police chief John Drake said when police responded to the shots fired call in downtown Nashville around 5:30a, they encountered an RV playing a recording that said a bomb would detonate in 15 min. Police immediately began evacuating nearby residents.

The warning sounds like a commercially available recording that would be used as part of an automated emergency response system, something you might hear in a nuclear powerplant or hazardous materials storage area.

WKRN just played a compilation of four Nest video clips from 215 Second Ave N (just right down from ground zero) of about a dozen very loud gunshots over the space of about an hour before the explosion.
I stand by my reckoning that this was a trap laid for police, but the automated warnings from the RV still perplexes me.

Doesn’t seem like a plot by Trumpsters since they would want to attack and kill people who don’t support their master. And Tennessee isn’t involved in any political dispute related to the election. Very strange. Hopefully we will eventually find out the motivation. Destructive — but no apparent interest in harming people.

Yeah, I think it’s pretty up in the air right now. It depends on if the warnings broadcast from the vehicle were intended as police bait, or to minimize casualties while blowing up the AT&T building. I think the list of possibilities is pretty long.

My observation as well. A major switching center is usually noticeable because of the lack of windows and lots of cooling. Given the placement of the blast, it was likely the target.

Yeah, was just noting that he got booted for the same type of behavior on Twitter - you can look at the mentions he was getting showing a hive of QAnon and proto-fascist nuttery and calls for violence against those targets.
Those routing centers are hardened. The explosion may have tripped some breakers feeding some servers and beasty routers/switches but probably 100% of that gear is active UPS systems with battery backup. Some of the hardware closest to the blast area might be trashed most of that stuff kept chugging along.
If there’s some outages it might be AT&T doing some maintenance, reboots, etc. Doesn’t look like any big damage to that building. You can see the blast wave compression on the sheet metal sides of the building. It def took a beating.

If it were a proper ANFO bomb, Second Ave would look like the remains of the Murrah building.
Exactly. This was a show attack. A countdown broadcast on a PA for 15 minutes?

Yup, good point. If that blast happened right over conduits with lots of copper/fiber that would be much more effective to ‘take out’ the facility. Single mode fiber is glass and would probably shatter.

Actually, I was thinking that it might have been a trial run type of bombing. Doing it on the early morning where nobody is going to be wandering around the downtown area of a moderate sized city indicates that they were wanting to see how much damage would be done with minimal risk to life, and whether all of the parts worked.
I worry that around January 6 or more likely January 20, the real attack happens.

I took the opportunity this morning to scroll through the transcript of the sermon preached last Sunday by Pasture Eric Jones. (YouTube will create these transcripts so I don’t have to listen to his yelling.) He spent time bashing California for its COVID-19 response, which includes fining recalcitrant churches, so I spent some time letting him know what a horrible person he, how he and his church are not being persecuted and that he ought to go over to LA and volunteer to move bodies into refrigerated trucks. Then I took a look at the LA Times’ front page and saw this:
L.A. County hospitals running dangerously low on oxygen, supplies as ER units are overwhelmed
Clearing emergency rooms becomes vital as hospitals struggle with critical patients.
And I went back to leave another comment, and, in honor of the holiday, a triple dog dare for him to address this in his Sunday sermon.
Why no, I am not a nice person. Whatever gave you that idea?

The networks are designed from the start with a lot of redundancy; it looks like the transition period as traffic is rerouted.
While the equipment may have survived (although there is a lot of old circuit switching that may not be considered repairable or worth repairing), without proper cooling and power the center can’t run for long; the UPS is only good for short intervals.
I do worry this is a dry run.

Well, the Ravi Zacharias scandal has made it out of the religion bubble and to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Sexual misconduct allegations against late Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias confirmed by ongoing investigation
*snip*
“Sadly, the interim investigation update indicates this assessment of Ravi’s behavior to be true — that he did indeed engage in sexual misconduct,” according to the statement. “This misconduct is deeply troubling and wholly inconsistent with the man Ravi Zacharias presented both publicly and privately to so many over more than four decades of public ministry. We are heartbroken at learning this but feel it necessary to be transparent and to inform our staff, donors, and supporters at this time, even while the investigation continues. We will speak more comprehensively to all concerned after the completion of the investigation.”
The full report is due out “early” next year.

Gotta say, this is actually a distinct possibility to bear in mind regarding the bombing in Nashville:
My guess is that since it was in front of the AT&T headquarters building, on a early holiday morning with few people out, it was a disgruntled employee that wanted to cause real property damage but tried to warn the people the bomb go off. Hence the pre warning. Just a guess!

A personal gripe against AT&T? Have to say that would not be surprising at all — from either employees or customers. But taking such an extreme action is definitely out of the ordinary but it would not be shocking to learn of that type of motivation.
re: #98 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)
Was very low-key here. Some coffee and oatmeal for breakfast. Read for a while and then did a 90 minute long Zoom call with immediate family and some friends/acquaintances of my brother and niece.*
Eggnog, with rum, now and thinking about another meal.
* - 9 people, four cats, and a dog. Pile of geologists, a biologist, an astrophysicist, and one computer scientist. And the dog wore a hat for part of the call.
We’re so low-key that we haven’t done our Christmas Zoom yet. This is out of deference to people wanting to sleep in, and then my granddaughter’s nap schedule. She’s too young (18 months) to know she “should” have gotten her gifts in the morning and the rest of us are adults and can wait. Gifts are kind of limited anyway. I’m sure our kids have gifts for their spouses, and everyone has gifts for our granddaughter, but the majority will be our charitable contributions to the organizations chosen by the people involved. Mr. C. and I aren’t exchanging gifts because we don’t need anything we don’t have. Except maybe that box under the tree which is very likely to contain a picture of our granddaughter-it is oozing cuteness right through the wrapping. ;)

Well it works on TV.
Yeah: on most television procedurals, the squadroom computer-geek just zooms a couple of frames, presses a few keys, and produces a picture of the perp of studio-portrait quality: which about 3 seconds of “facial recognition” flipping immediately identifies as the second-tier actor playing the bomber. Leading to a dramatic break-in by the heroes, just before the commercial break….

The bomber may have taken the plates off to make it more difficult for authorities to ID the owner of the vehicle (unless the bomber stole the vehicle prior to blowing it up) but probably didn’t stop to think that the vehicle could be ID’d through VIN or serial number from the debris. Now if the bomber stole the vehicle just before loading it up with explosives and then driving it to its destination, setting the recorded warning and presumably some kind of detonator or timer, then it could be difficult to apprehend the bomber, unless there’s a clear CCTV image of him.
Off to bed; have a good one Lizards, and stay healthy.

So, the argument here is that there’s no point in trying to be a better person because Christianity doesn’t require that of us-unlike the world’s other religions. All we need to do is wait for a deity to come along and save us from ourselves. Furthermore he has no proof any of that is true or useful. Strangely uncompelling.

Aren’t human remains the term they use when the person has been dead awhile? I would think if it was a death caused by the explosion it would be referred to as “killed in the explosion” or “death caused by.” I wonder if there was a dead body in the RV before the explosion.

Human remains can be old unidentified bodies or parts, and relatively fresh(ish) unidentified indistinguishable tissue masses/fragments
re: #176 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀 No Capt’n😷Trips

Possibly. Would take a bit of time to setup the explosives, whatever triggering method was needed, the PA system to play the “warning”, etc in the vehicle. If stolen you would not want a stolen vehicle report going out for a vehicle as easy to spot as a large RV. Kill owner, stash body for a bit, then blow up remains in explosion. Maybe even try to use it as red herring of a death by accidental explosion.
Or I could be wrong.

If you did want to do a test run of something like that, Christmas morning is a good time as downtown would be practically deserted and human impacts would be minimal.
Although the disgruntled employee theory seems plausible to me too because crippling the companies network when most of the senior engineers and such are off for the Holidays would ensure maximum impact.
