In a last-minute addition, language was inserted in the bill making it easier to overturn an election, no longer requiring evidence that fraud actually altered an outcome of a race — but rather only that enough ballots were illegally cast that could have made a difference.

Texas Republicans finalize bill that would enact stiff new voting restrictions and make it easier to overturn election results

She calls out to the man on the street
“Sir, can you help me?
It’s cold and I’ve nowhere to sleep
Is there somewhere you can tell me?”
He walks on, doesn’t look back
He pretends he can’t hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there
Oh, think twice, ‘cause it’s another day for you and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, ‘cause it’s another day for you
You and me in paradise

I went out and picketed the 4 pm service this afternoon.

The lime green cooling towel is a game changer. It was 100 degrees outside but the towel (and the liquids I had in my purse) kept me cool. A cooling hat is supposed to be delivered to me next week. Between the cooling towel and the cooling hat, I should be able to hit Driscoll’s outfit on the hottest of days.

There seems to a lot of people blaming China for “not admitting that there was human-to-human transmission” of COVID-19 early on.

That’s pretty difficult, when you can’t test for the existence of the Virus until you know the Gene Code.

Here’s what we know from the WHOs own timeline. Late December:

In China:

“The mother is sick now!”

“With what?”

“We don’t know, but it looks a lot like SARS!”

We should report this to the WHO!”

Reported to The Who on December 31, 2019.

China reported the gene sequence to the Who on 12 January.

Everybody starts looking for tests to determine if sick people are affected by the new Novel Corona Virus.

14 January

WHO’s technical lead for the response noted in a press briefing there may have been limited human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus (in the 41 confirmed cases), mainly through family members, and that there was a risk of a possible wider outbreak. The lead also said that human-to-human transmission would not be surprising given our experience with SARS, MERS and other respiratory pathogens.

22 January

WHO mission to China issued a statement saying that there was evidence of human-to-human transmission in Wuhan but more investigation was needed to understand the full extent of transmission.

30 January 2020

The WHO Director-General reconvened the Emergency Committee (EC). This was earlier than the 10-day period and only two days after the first reports of limited human-to-human transmission were reported outside China. This time, the EC reached consensus and advised the Director-General that the outbreak constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The Director-General accepted the recommendation and declared the novel coronavirus outbreak (2019-nCoV) a PHEIC. This is the 6th time WHO has declared a PHEIC since the International Health Regulations (IHR) came into force in 2005.

WHO’s situation report for 30 January reported 7818 total confirmed cases worldwide, with the majority of these in China, and 82 cases reported in 18 countries outside China. WHO gave a risk assessment of very high for China, and high at the global level.

24 February 2020

The WHO-China Joint mission, which included experts from Canada, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore and the US (CDC, NIH) spent time in Beijing and also travelled to Wuhan and two other cities. They spoke with health officials, scientists and health workers in health facilities (maintaining physical distancing). The report of the joint mission can be found here:

Were the Chinese slow to reveal human-to-human transmission?

Maybe, but only when this first thing reared its lethal head. Maybe the initial reports out of Wuhan were quashed by Beijing, but within days, the existence of a Corona Virus was reported, and twelve days later, they released the genetic sequence (GenSeq) to the world.

They weren’t hiding human-to-human transmission, they assumed it was real and were scared as shit of it and released the GenSeq to get some decent testing and set the stage for the mRNA vaccines that we have today.

But the Drumpf crowd wants to yell “By Jingo! It’s all China’s fault.”

Gee, it’s almost like the United States CDC had a pandemic preparedness unit who had boots on the ground in China (among many other places), but they were disbanded because TFG wanted to spend less federal money and make himself look like a conservative hero for reducing government waste. I wonder how that worked out for him.

“…SB7 appears to be in trouble in the Texas House, per House Democratic source who says multiple fatal points of order have been identified

This comes after Sen. Hughes took the perhaps unprecedented step of asking the Senate to suspend rules for the bill that he didn’t intend to take up for several hours after the vote to suspend

As the Texas Senate prepares for a potential all-night debate on Senate Bill 7, the omnibus elections bill, a Texas House Democratic source close to the SB7 fray tells Quorum Report tonight that multiple fatal points of order have been identified on the conference committee report.

That is even after a corrected report was filed after the initial filing of the report earlier in the day.

This news comes after Senate Democrats peppered Lt. Gov. Dan Partrick and Sen. Bryan Hughes with parliamentary inquiries about why the upper chamber is proceeding in a perhaps unprecedented manner.”

Texas elected R’s are great at bloviating, and awful at actually writing Laws. We have seen this for over two decades. One of the reasons is that they do not hire staff with sufficient chops to understand the nuance of actually writing a Statute.

If the Restriction of Voting Rights Act (or whatever they have disguised it as) doesn’t pass, it will be because of R incompetence and Democratic land mines inserted in the agreed Statute during the reconciliation process that the R’s didn’t catch.

I don’t consider this rat-fucking. I consider this letting the opposition step on its own rake.

To follow up, Chinese government officials said there was no evidence of human to human transmission on Jan 14, but anybody with an ounce of scientific background realized that is not same as “no human transmission”. On Jan 20 Chinese officials said it was human to human. You have to keep in mind there were few known cases at the time. Once the sequence was published, and pcr tests developed, that really changed things.

Don’t look now, but people who really should know better are running interference for one Mr. Ngo again.

It’s funny how often journos will go to bat for each other against criticism or purported violence from the left, but wither and cede to rage, vitriol, and actual confirmed violence from the right. Not to mention how consistently they’re willing to overlook Ngo’s literal goddamn tangible collaboration with Neo-Nazi groups in Portland in order to defend his sorry ass.

Only Christians could apply for jail chaplain job in Prince George’s County, federal lawsuit says (Baltimore Sun, May 28, 2021)

COLLEGE PARK — Applicants for a chaplain’s job at a Maryland county jail had to sign a statement affirming that they are Christians, a Muslim man claimed Thursday in a federal lawsuit accusing the county and a contractor of religious discrimination.

Lawyers from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights group, sued Prince George’s County on behalf of Edrees Bridges, who has been a volunteer chaplain at a county jail in Upper Marlboro since 2018.

Remember rape apologist Paige Patterson, formerly of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary?

The seminary is after him now because he committed the one true crime that can’t be forgiven by Christian conservatives: They allege he stole from them. You’re only supposed to do that to the marks.

Southwestern Accuses Pattersons of Theft, Improper Donor Solicitation (Word & Way)

Three years after trustees at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary fired Paige Patterson as president for mishandling allegations of student rapes, the school in Fort Worth, Texas, alleges Patterson and his wife Dorothy took items from the SWBTS and improperly contacted SWBTS donors to shift funding to the Pattersons’ personal nonprofit.

“The Pattersons have continued to use institutional records for their own personal benefit and to the detriment of the Seminary,” the SWBTS report alleges. “The Pattersons’s actions have caused substantial financial harm to the Seminary.”

and

Additionally, SWBTS alleges the Pattersons took artwork, antique firearms, and taxidermy from a collection donated to the seminary by Perry Bolin. As the school worked with the Bolin family to transfer the collection to a third party, an inventory in 2019-2020 discovered several missing items.

“Through pictures posted to social media, the Seminary learned that at least one of the missing paintings is hanging in the Pattersons’ new home in Parker, Texas,” the report adds. “On multiple occasions, legal counsel for the Seminary has contacted the Pattersons’ legal counsel to request the items be returned. As of the time of this response, the missing items have yet to be returned to the Seminary.”

They have the evidence, they could just call the cops. They won’t do that though, because they don’t want to draw more attention to the abject failure of their moral teachings.

That’s because all it really is is a stunt, a bit of political theater meant to get her support and sympathy from like-minded asshats who are going to look at yellow Star of David stickers and say “YEAH, SHE’S TOTALLY LIKE A JEW IN THE HOLOCAUST!!!”

If she’d been serious about a 1:1 analogy, she would have custom-ordered a bunch of masks with SoDs on them to wear in public, so that they might show others their plight at being forced to wear a mask in public simply because they refuse to be vaccinated. But complying with the law wouldn’t garner the sort of attention they wanted, and it ultimately would leave them looking like fools as everybody around them slowly gets their jabs and cease to wear masks. So they’ve adopted these stickers instead so that when they’re thrown out of the Starbucks or refused service at Wally World, they can show the people their plight for refusing to abide by the law.

What’s the analogy failure here? That Jews in Nazi Germany that refused to abide by the Nuremberg Laws didn’t just refused a cup of coffee, they were imprisoned or worse. And the sad reality is that none of these asshats are in any danger of ever getting more than a citation and dirty looks for willfully choosing to remain plague rats.

Well yeah, but they don’t want mild inconvenience, which would be continuing to carry and wear masks because they refuse to get vaccinated. What they want is victimhood, something their white privilege does not normally grant them. So they slap these stickers on their shirts and make a big scene of being tossed from a store for refusal to wear a mask, so they can then go around telling all their friends about how much of a “victim” they are for not being able to buy an overpriced coffee from Starbucks because they refuse to wear a mask.

I recall walking out of the cinema during a French film, The Last Woman starring Gerard Depardieu, I found it unbearably tedious.

My roommate, who stuck it out to the end, tells me I’m lucky, the big dramatic climax is when he castrates himself with an electric carving knife out of desperation over a woman who has been breaking up/making up with him throughout the whole film while alternately belittling his manhood…

Their pathological strain of Christianity idolizes victimhood, so they are all victims, of course. This is just showing the world “See, they are out to get us!”

The fact that they have power out of all proportion doesn’t relieve this feeling, and just makes it worse for those not Of The Tribe that they have power over. It’s often pretty miserable being a minority inside a minority, since the bigger minority tends to grant themselves a great deal of license over others to make up for their own persecution, or “persecution.”

Which is really the root of what’s driving them all batty: They’re used to being the ones who could tell people “You don’t belong here.” Used to going into a diner or a hardware store and knowing that they’re automatically welcome and won’t be turned away because of the way they look or act.

So to find themselves on the other side of the equation, even though it’s totally through a voluntary act rather than inborn qualities they discriminate against everyday without thought, is (to them) no different than being a minority targeted for discrimination.

Yep. They always run to the Holocaust when they want to depict themselves as helpless victims of discrimination and hate. But very rarely do you hear them compare the way they’re treated to Jim Crow…except when they also scream “REVERSE RACISM!!!”

The fear that is driving so much of the white freakout in modern America…is that almost instinctual fear that those they view as slaves will one day rise up.

Ayep. They can say it was about “communism” all they like, but the driving reason for conservative support in the West for South Africa’s apartheid gov’t was deep-seated fear that the black majority would begin a “white genocide” if they were ever allowed to be in charge. And it is part of the reason why Putin enjoys such support in the West due to his various actions and discriminatory laws against racial, ethnic, and religious minorities in Russia.

2 killed and more than 20 wounded in mass shooting at a concert, Miami-Dade police say (Miami Herald, four minutes ago)

Two people were killed and up to 25 people wounded in a mass shooting at a concert early Sunday morning in Northwest Miami-Dade, officials say. One of those injured is in critical condition, according to police.

The shooting started after midnight at a concert at a billiards hall in the 7600 block of Northwest 186th Street, an unincorporated area of the county west of Miami Gardens, Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez said.

Some concert-goers where outside when a white Nissan Pathfinder pulled up, Ramierz said. Three unidentified people stepped out of the SUV with assault rifles and handguns and began shooting into the crowd.

Now just imagine a hotly disputed election outcome in 2024 in which the apparent Democratic winner (Biden and/or Harris) of the popular vote is disqualified due to “irregularities” in several GOP states, turning the election over to the state delegations who select The GOP candidate (Trump, Hawley, Cruz, etc…)

Of course, this would all lead to mass protest and popular unrest which will quickly turn violent (because Americans cannot even lose - or even win - a basketball tournament without going violent) and entire urban areas begin to resemble Somalia with trucks full of militiamen out gunning down anything that looks “treasonous” or “terrorist” to them…

Which is exactly why I am in favour of returning it, like all veterans groups and most Gold Star Families, to May 30.

The date was originally selected by the Grand Army of the Republic, because May 30 was a day which had no significant battles during the Civil War.

It is only on Monday due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968. That act created Columbus Day as a federal holiday, and made Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Washington’s Birthday Monday holidays.

Outrage returned Veteran’s Day in 1978 to November 11, but the fallen cannot lobby for the same for Memorial Day.

6 Orlando residents stole over $700,000 from churches, FDLE says (Orlando Sentinal)

The lede:

Six Orlando residents worked together to steal over $740,000 from 636 churches and parochial schools nationwide, including 355 in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Part of the problem with church money thefts (there was another in Texas a few days ago where more than $400,000 was embezzled by one employee) is that churches are not held to the standards of charities, therefore it is easy to steal from churches.

Of course, for churches to be held to the standard of charities would mean they would have to open their books to outside auditors. Very few churches are interested in that.

Investigators said the six Romanian citizens operated out of Orlando and traveled to steal over 1,500 donation checks from church mailboxes, sometimes stealing from as many as 85 churches in a day. They then used different pseudonyms to deposit the stolen checks into multiple bank accounts and withdraw the money before banks could flag the charges, according to a release. Their arrest documents were not immediately available.

The group used the money to buy cars, food and clothing and sent large sums to Romania via wire transfers, Plessinger said.

It would be a failure if nothing of substance gets done. Republicans have declared their opposition to democracy and the rule of law. Every day, they rewrite the rules to give cover to their fascism. There is only one party in the US government, and if they do nothing to govern or benefit society because it is somehow more important to negotiate with terrorists, then it is a failure.

Any negotiation with Republicans at this point is negotiating with terrorists.

Note that dogs, which are not listed in the graphic, kill far more people (25,000) annually — mainly through rabies.

ROME (AP) — The three suspects in Italy’s cable car disaster that killed 14 people were allowed to leave prison Sunday after a judge indicated that most of the blame fell on just one of them: a service technician who intentionally disabled the car’s emergency brake because it kept locking spontaneously.

Judge Donatella Banci Buonamici said there wasn’t sufficient evidence suggesting the owner of the Mottarone cable car company, Luigi Nerini, or the maintenance chief, Enrico Perocchio, knew that the technician had deactivated the brake on several occasions even before the May 23 disaster.

So I’m watching Tenet and someone really needs to explain this to me. If it’s not wrapped up in 20 minutes that’s when it’ll end) with anything I can understand… I’m baffled.

Pay attention to the “temporal pincer maneuver” concept. That’s basically the whole movie.

re: #153 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I made it 20 minutes in, and decided I probably just wasn’t really in the mood for it. Came back to it a few days later and lasted another 9 minutes. I hear the ghost of Casey Kasem over my shoulder saying, “Ponderous, man, fuckin’ ponderous!”

we still talking about army of the dead? I watched the whole thing. Not bad, really. There were some interesting set pieces that made it kind of cool. The zombies have alphas who are smart (sort of a “I am Legend” idea), and both the “queen” and “king” are pretty bad-assed. Also, there’s a zombie tiger, which of course has a walking dead motif behind it. In other words, yes, it is a collection mostly of stuff from other better stuff, but it’s actually not that terrible once you get into the action-which requires 20 minutes or so of throat-clearing.

Spoiler - major spoiler, as I’mma explain the whole damn film, at least as far as I understand it:

The older Protagonist is the mastermind, using pawns to attack backward in time to the Soviet mission, while the younger Protagonist moves forward from the opening scene at the opera raid to when Neil tells him of his destiny. The future version of the Protagonist knew how it would all end, so he’s just putting the pieces on the board for when his younger self gets wind of what Sator is plotting. Neil learned what to do in the future and his job was to guide the Protagonist to save the world and then form the Tenet organization, which, of course, is what leads to saving the world in this closed loop.

When did gender reveal parties become a thing? Never had them growing up but I guess at 52, I’m an old fogey.

I am in the same age group as you and until recently I never heard of them. I think they have been around for a few years possibly 2 or 3 years.

You kids today…;-)

I believe it started once it was possible to identify the gender via sonograms and therefore know before the baby is born. So it’s a relatively recent phenomenon.

Why people make such a big deal about it isn’t clear. A part of me believes it’s a way to say “Hey, my kid will have a penis”, as if that’s a big deal.

It’s been more than a decade. They started fairly innocuously with a cake that was either blue or pink when you cut into it, and then it somehow became a competition to see who could have the more outrageous reveal.

It was an interesting arrow of time thought experiment that became a screen play and then the director lost a drunken dare.

Jenna Karvunidis is no stranger to this phenomenon. In fact, many credit her as the “inventor” of the gender party reveal. For her, it was through a cake.

“We had a knife and we cut into it all together and we all saw the pink icing at the same time, and found out that we were having a girl,” Karvunidis says.

Like rich people who are throwing their $10,000, $100,000 or $1,000,000 first birthday party, but everyone, rich or poor, tries to one-up everyone else.
