For Charlesā€¦I apologize for not putting LOL at the end of my tweet concerning the showā€™s ending. I wasnā€™t ticked about knowing whodunnit ahead of seeing it. Iā€™d have seen it somewhere else. By the time I get finished with the series Iā€™ll have forgotten anyway. Honestly.
I remember a few months before The Sixth Sense came out I guessed the twistā€¦but then forgot I had when I watched the movie and guessed it again halfway through.

Dear gun people of LGF, what the hell is a ā€œcollapsible carbineā€? Read onā€¦

OK, this is probably way, way, way, way WAY the hell out into the weeds, but one of Driscollā€™s former guys put up a website called deardriscoll.com. (I protest in front of Driscollā€™s church.)

Thereā€™s a lot of strangeness being reported by Chad Freese. One of the things, further down on the page under ā€œChild Safety Concerns and Favoritismā€, is allegations of child sexual abuse. But above that, thereā€™s THIS. Keep in mind, Iā€™ve been picketing out there for several weeks:

Driscoll Detail Entourage
During my initial ā€œformalā€ meeting with Brandon, we discussed organizational vision and guidance for how the security team would be structured. Brandon made it clear I was to be the Director with Marc Stirton falling under me, but Marc would serve as the head of the Driscoll Detail. The detail was formed to provide safety for you and your family, with Marc Stirton running the screening and selection process for those so allowed to be in your ā€œinner circleā€ as he is a ā€œtrustedā€ friend of the family. This calculated decision created a lot of strife and division amongst the team because it further isolated you and the detail from the rest of the team and church family. This created a breakdown in communication and team structure. It caused chaos and confusion because your security detail would pull security team members off the team, out of their assigned position, and even took it upon themselves to fire people without my approval or even without me knowing the situation.

The environment and culture amongst your detail became very toxic internally and extremely uncomfortable externally. The congregation could tell a change in atmospheric dynamics with the new security detail isolating you from everyone, in and out of the sanctuary. You had an entourage with you everywhere you went. You struggled with balancing the paranoia with your ego, to the point of installing a firearm safe with assault rifles in your office and even having your detail carry collapsible carbines around campus. What sickens me the most is I bought into the hype and was aware of this. I was complicit in my recommendations of a solid security posture because of the dramatic lies were told to me about how many people from Seattle were ā€œout to get you.ā€ I remember Brandon often telling the team things like,

ā€œthis is what happens when you work for Pastor Mark. Craziness comes. We need our men to be prepared.ā€

Having your entourage escort you from the parking lot to your office, to the sanctuary and back to the office, then back to the parking lot, and even driving you to and from your house is a tad dramatic and over the top by any stretch of the imagination. Then again, maybe it is on par with all the people you have caused hurt and heartache over the years. This craziness is certainly self-induced.

I have repented for my behavior in this, and I ask for forgiveness for being a part of this culture and environment. I need Jesus just as much as anyone else.

Yeah, I was sick for a few minutes after reading this. But would this keep me from protesting? Nope. It just made me look for information about how to stream to Facebook Live.

Iā€™m certainly no expert on Texas law (obviously), but CAN the Governor just ā€œvetoā€ something like the Legislatureā€™s operating budget (still less their salaries)?
I would imagine this sort of appropriation wouldnā€™t be subject to gubernatorial whim, but then again, Texasā€¦

Iā€™m no gun expert but ā€œcollapsible carbineā€ seems to be a fancy term used to describe a rifle that can fold in half (or otherwise be quickly disassembled and reassembled) for easier storage (or I suppose easier concealment depending on circumstances).

More likely they mean a version of the AR based on the M-4 carbine with a stock that can be lengthened or shortened. Like this:

Itā€™s not especially useful unless youā€™re wearing ceramic plate body armor and have to adjust your length of pull to accommodate it. That said, all the tacticool mall ninjas have to have it.

Itā€™s been one interesting roller coaster of a week. Havenā€™t been this happy in a very long time.

Earlier today we were discussing the possibility of driving to someplace in between (St. Louis or Springfield, Il) and having a long weekend. One advantage of hotel work is cheap rates at the other hotels in our system. Employee rate at IHGā€™s (parent co of Holiday Inn & lots of others) Candlewood Suites is $39+tax a night for example. Now the interesting part will be to convince my Dad that he should lend me his Prius for a couple of days so the gas bill is doable ā€œDad, didnā€™t you say you needed the pickup?ā€ < whistles innocently >

I donā€™t think itā€™s either left or right. Itā€™s sole purpose is to maximize Shareholder Value.

If the algorithms say that the best way to do this is to stifle interesting, intelligent posts from knowledgeable people in favor of Yahoos whose discourse is based on ā€œ!tā€™s t!me to k!ll all the K!kes!ā€, theyā€™ll do it until the algorithms say to quit it.

Reagan killed the old Republican Coalition in 1980. They still think itā€™s possible to put it back together. It isnā€™t. Theyā€™ve ethnically cleansed the Moderate Wing from the Party.

The Lincoln Project is blowing smoke up its own ass. They will never regain the Base because they have absolutely NOTHING to offer them. They new Base doesnā€™t want Policy, they want to fight to retain White Privilege.

They are scared of bad shit that might happen to them, that it might result in them losing their shit, their Property, their influence, their preeminence in their local communities, their Counties, their States, to ā€œThose Peopleā€.

The only way that the leadership kept control over the nutters this long was by putting them on a racism drip-feed. Figures like Atwater and Rove masterminded ways of using race as a weapon against Dem candidates without saying it out loud, so much that Dems ended up having to adopt their language just to remain competitive.

All the Trump era did was convince the party that only way they can win going forward if they ditch the drip-feed and start mainlining that shit. That the culture warfare isnā€™t working anymore, if you want whites to show up to the polls then you have to make them believe that weā€™re on the verge of ā€œliving on a black planetā€ and the only thing that will keep that from happening is keeping Repubs in office.

Thanks!

Iā€™ve been cogitating on it in the Year of Lockdown, reading books and shit, generally doing research on the origins of the change in the way the Rā€™s did business and was at first convinced that Nixonā€™s Southern Strategy was the catalyst. I think thatā€™s a bit shallow.

He did indeed appeal to Southern Democrats, saying that their party had abandoned them to the Negro Hordes. It worked. It flipped the South.

He didnā€™t give a fuck about religion, or about southern crackers. It was a means unto an end.

Nixonā€™s strategy got him *elected* but look how he legislated!

The EPA, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and opening up in China.
If a Democrat had done that, he would have been lauded as a Progressive for the Ages.

But it was Nixon, who was a little paranoid worm of a human being, and torpedoed his Presidency because of that. Great on policy, absolutely tone deaf on Governing 101.

Ronnie took it to the second level, actively bringing the Evangelicals in. Nixon appealed to the Peckerwoods, Reagan appealed to the Chosen, which was and is still remarkably ironic because both he and Drumpf were not regular churchgoers, or even strong believers.

But Ronnie put the coalition together that is still threatening our Democracy 41 years later.

This is pretty much a QED argument.

Reagan killed traditional Republicanism and it is as dead as a doornail.

Thereā€™s a whole lot more relationship to gaming in all sorts of movements and cults. You can see character storylines with revealed knowledge, leveling, experience and resource grinding, and the dopamine high of knocking out achievements. They seriously predate electronic gaming, so the videogame industry didnā€™t have to invent any of it.

Iā€™ve seen the ā€œQAnon as a LARPā€ theory put out there before, Iā€™m not sure if this is the same author as prior pieces Iā€™ve read but it hits a lot of the same notes. And speaking as a gamer, I can tell you that itā€™s become almost instinctual to look for hidden meanings in everything. A wall pattern that looks like it might be a door? Weā€™ll spend hours looking for hidden latches or puzzles to open it. Light seems to blink in sequence that might spell something? Weā€™ll delve into mathematical equations the likes not even Zod has ever seen trying to decipher them.

Why? Because game creators for generations now have done such things not only to liven up their games, but also to keep people coming back for the experience. Itā€™s actually hurt the reputations of games when there was nothing to solve or hidden items to be found because gamers felt that the experience was ā€œlacking.ā€

So the person(s) never had to actually have a storyline set out or an ultimate goal that people were to be lead to, all they had to do was give them a bare bones ā€œstoryā€ and some ā€œcluesā€ and the gamers among the pack would fill in the blanks and get those who werenā€™t looking to do the legwork the gratification of being part of a ā€œteam.ā€ Because few things appeal to the social creatures that we are more than the idea that you are doing everything as a ā€œteam.ā€

That ā€œfunds the legislative branchā€ is not only legislators. It also funds low-paid staffers of legislators of both parties who depend on that pay, people who work at the Pink House who do not have anything to do with politics at all, &c.

Gov. Abbott is threatening to suspend everyoneā€™s pay because he did not get his way to be an authoritarian taking away voting rights.

Abbottā€™s tweet referred to Article X of the budget, which pays not only lawmakers and staff but also funds legislative agencies, such as the Legislative Budget Board. Under the current budget, the legislative branch is funded through the end of August, and the budget Abbott is referring to covers the fiscal year starting Sept. 1.

Abbott has until June 20 to carry out the veto.

Another bill which died in the Texas legislative session but didnā€™t get much attention was a revision to bail laws, which Gov. Abbott says is an ā€œemergency.ā€

HB-20, also negotiated by Republicans behind closed doors, would restrict people from being released on personal bond. It would prohibit charities from providing money for cash bail (except churches, because Christianity).

Mental health advocates warned about the bill because frequently when a person in crisis has the cops called on them, that person might lash out at the police (then be charged with assault on a police officer). Basically, they argue that they will turn county jails into psychiatric wards with no mental health attendants.

Gov. Abbott says he will bring that bill into the emergency session he wants to call along with his voter repression bill.

It literally doesnā€™t matter. Facebook, and other social media, are designed to respond to automated reports. If the asshole he was responding to went out and found a few friends to report his post for a reason that could, if true, have legal ramifications for the company, their systems are designed to shoot first and ask questions later. The bigger problem is that I donā€™t think there is any way to appeal such an automated ruling. TL;DR: Automated content filters make life easier for the content provider by literally handing control of the filters to the biggest group of assholes on the server.

Itā€™s not just Facebook. Any of the big mainstream social media sites - Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. - do the exact same thing. Itā€™s purely a cost-saving measure; rather than hiring and paying a team of dedicated report review staff, they just have to throw a few extra dollars into the infrastructure budget and add some up-front costs for programmers to build the report response algorithm. Now granted, a report review staff comes with its own problems, basically along the same lines as their content moderation teams, relating to potential or actual bias. But itā€™d still be a step forward from the incredibly draconian ā€œWeā€™ll suspend you because the computer says so, even if you didnā€™t violate any ToSā€ they have going on now.

World Health Organization Gives COVID-19 Variants ā€˜Non-Stigmatizingā€™ Greek Names (Huffington Post)

The World Health Organization shifted how it will name current and future COVID-19 variants on Monday, choosing to identify them by letters of the Greek alphabet instead of the countries they were first discovered in.

WHO said it hoped the change will help reduce stigma and discrimination after variants that first emerged in countries including the United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil and India were commonly known as the strains linked to a specific region. Those variants will now be known as the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta variants, respectively, with new strains being given letters down the line of the Greek alphabet.

Those strains have become the dominant variants of COVID-19 in many regions, and others are currently listed as variants of interest should they become more dangerous.

Blessed be the fruit: ā€œBiological females are one of our nationā€™s greatest treasuresā€ according to anti-trans activist (Eclectablog)

Efforts are underway across America to bar transgender women from participating in school and college athletics. Despite the fact that the Republicans introducing these types of odious, discriminatory bills ā€œcannot cite a single instance in their own state or region where such participation has caused problemsā€, legislators like my own state senator Lana Theis keep pushing them anyway.

But a quote in a recent article at Michigan Advance really stopped me in my tracks:

Supporters of the bill heavily centered their arguments around athletic differences between cisgender women and cisgender men. Gabriel Higerd, a former adjunct professor of exercise science who researches transgender sports policy, said ā€œbiological females are one of our nationā€™s greatest treasuresā€ and argued that this bill is necessary because it protects cisgender female athletes from competing against transgender female athletes. The statistics he cited were rooted in cisgender men outperforming cisgender women in sports.

I have never heard any single group of Americans described as ā€œone of our nationā€™s greatest treasuresā€ as if they were some sort of commodity and not human beings. When I read it, I was gobsmacked. I heard it read in the voice of Aunt Lydia from The Handmaidā€™s Tale. As in, ā€œLadies, you are Gileadā€™s greatest treasures! Blessed be the fruit. May the Lord open!ā€

Itā€™s revolting.

I donā€™t see how that is counter-Biblical when that is in both the Old and New Testaments. You even note it lines up with that interpretation.

That has been the interpretation of the overwhelming majority of churches since the Roman Catholic Church came into existence. The only differences people outside Christianity see is the degree to which those distinctions between men and women are applied.

Of note, the arguably most liberal denomination (the one which discriminates least), the Metropolitan Community Church, is banned from the World Council of Churches by every other denomination.

re: #52 Targetpractice

So the person(s) never had to actually have a storyline set out or an ultimate goal that people were to be lead to, all they had to do was give them a bare bones ā€œstoryā€ and some ā€œcluesā€ and the gamers among the pack would fill in the blanks and get those who werenā€™t looking to do the legwork the gratification of being part of a ā€œteam.ā€ Because few things appeal to the social creatures that we are more than the idea that you are doing everything as a ā€œteam.ā€

sort of along this topic, Iā€™ve been trying for years to remember the game from I would guess the early to mid 90ā€™s, which was a kind of cool dungeon crawl with some time in town. One could throw a coin down a well and there was a really cool animated music video with a catchy damned song sung by a female vocalist. I almost want to say Black Star, but pretty sure thatā€™s CSN song from the mid-70ā€™s. No game titles of the era look quite right when I search title lists from the period, and Iā€™ve never heard the song any place else. (which means Iā€™ve maybe heard the song twice in my life, because I probably threw another coin down the well to hear it again).

I understand, on its face, not making it easy to get to a live person. You donā€™t want your support lines getting effectively DDoSā€™d by garbage callers, trolls, and the like. And yes, screening systems can help with that, but arenā€™t 100% proof against it. I understand, on its face, not making it easy to get to a live person. You donā€™t want your support lines getting effectively DDoSā€™d by garbage callers, trolls, and the like. And yes, screening systems can help with that, but arenā€™t 100% proof against it. With that said, your automated support needs a clear and obvious way to say, ā€œOkay, I tried all that and itā€™s still broken, can you put me through to a person now?ā€

Yes. Exactly this.

That the system assumes I am totally incompetent and have to step through multiple things I have already done before giving me an option to go into a queue to talk to a human (and then get walked through their script) is what annoys me. Allowing me to get into that queue right off is what I would want.

And systems like my doctors and others have automated systems - but all of them pretty much have a ā€œif none of these apply please stay on the lineā€ option.

York quoting Gateway Pundit.

The worms are eating into everyoneā€™s brains on the right wing. Fascists are going full Nazi. They canā€™t help themselves but show their true colors at every turn. Insisting on a coup to install Trump, some incomprehensible word salad insisting Trump regains power in August (they keep moving that timeline back as every Q-related theory keeps failing to come to pass).

Flynn calls for a coup. Trump says heā€™s regaining power in August. Maggie amplifying/regurgitating whatever Trump says.

Bad crazy is getting worse. And if youā€™re trying to parse what I just wrote, youā€™d think that youā€™re in some dystopian alternative reality where up is down.

Heck, Iā€™m beginning to wonder if Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty) was right, and all multiverses bend towards fascism. The GOP is certainly making their play towards fascism with gutting civil and voting rights, trying to overthrow elections, and ignoring vote counts to certify the candidates they want to win. Theyā€™ve made it clear that they no longer accept elections where GOPers do not win.

Meanwhile, the feds are going to get plea deals from Oath Keeper domestic terrorists over the next 2 months - which means that theyā€™ll be rolling on those above them. All of these people deserve lengthy prison sentences.

The worms are eating his brains. Thereā€™s precisely zero way that he resumes being president. Thereā€™s no mechanism short of a coup for that to happen, and that ends democracy. Flynn was pushing the coup route. GOPers are falling in lockstep behind this too - as they continue to show that they donā€™t accept election results that GOPers donā€™t win.

The GOP have made it explicitly clear that they no longer seek to participate in a representative democracy and that they care only about authoritarian rule where they can impose their theocratic mumbo jumbo to control women and push wealth to the rich and the burdens to everyone else.

Iā€™m beginning to believe that rather than being the originator of the dangerous bullshit that the rabid right wing has been peddling for months now, heā€™s the first and biggest victim of it. I think that his absolute desperation to find something, anything, to cling to that protects his ego and insulates him from reality - and the fact that he surrounded himself with fawning sycophants who were similarly desperate to cling to whatever tenuous power and favor they had - basically led him and his cronies to seek out the craziest motherfuckers they could find to spin ever-more-fanciful tales. And once the President** and his retinue believed and disseminated them, well, why wouldnā€™t the rank and file, who already worshiped him as god-emperor, believe and disseminate them as well?

I remember looking up an old HS buddy on Facebook. We were not close friends but hung out a bit for the summer after we graduated.

His FB page was full of anti-Hillary, anti-Obama posts and other RW memes & talking points, I decided not to bother contacting him directly.

Facebook allowed us to reconnect with old friends, and find out that theyā€™re crazy assholes now.

I havenā€™t and have no intention to. I am now in contact with all but one of the people Iā€™d want to be.

I was talking to a friend at church about this last week. My parents both had a wonderful high school experience (they went to school with each other, after all), and are still friends with many of their classmates and correspond/meet up regularly. My sister was a decently popular person in her class, and sheā€™s still friends with several of her classmates, and I think she went to her 10-year reunion (where her classmates mostly reminisced about how many of their number were currently, as of the time of said reunion, in jail). I, on the other hand, would like to entirely forget almost everything that happened from the time we moved to Indiana to the day I left for college, and everyone associated with such time. I did not have a happy time in my teenage years (I nearly killed myself twice), and not even my family really knows how bad it got. Itā€™s not that I wish any of them ill, even the ones who were actively awful to me; in fact, I wish them well. I justā€¦ never want to think about any of that stuff ever again, or at least, as little as possible.

You may be right. It was Cleta Mitchell, the attorney on the Raffensperger call, who originally appeared on Fox News shortly after the election to claim that Trump hadnā€™t lost. Sheā€™s part of the ALEC crime family that is working to destroy our democracy. She said what he wanted to hear and so he believed her.

I skipped the second grade, which was a big mistake. For starters, I got behind in math and never caught up, and when I hit junior high, I was a slow pubertizer to begin with with classmates all a year older than myself.

And I had no business going off to university when I was 17. I realized in retrospect that a lot of what happens in college is not just to decide what to study or what career to pursue, but to decide what kind of person you wanted to be, and what you were willing to sacrifice or work hard on to achieve.

I saw people struggling with that and felt frustrated because I was simply not emotionally or socially advanced enough to do that yet.

I also changed universities and relocated after my sophomore year, which helped a bit, and by grad school had finally started to hit my stride.

* - One of the unit leaders who handles vehicle training asked for a method to damage vehicles so that trainees could be taught how to do repairs and practice doing so. So there was a place to get spare wheels and tracks. And if you parked a vehicle in a particular location you could access a nearby laptop to get an option to damage the parked vehicle. And when you activated the option a sound file of a Dalek yelling ā€œExterminate!ā€ would play.

I mean, I vaguely understand the concept that self-defense/self-preservation isnā€™t something that is granted by the government, but self-defense is not coextensive with gun ownership. One could, moreover, make a very compelling case that voting is also a form of self-defense/self-preservation. Lastly, if he wants to go the self-defense route, it certainly opens the door for limiting the number and kinds of guns available. You donā€™t need 100 guns to protect 4 people. You donā€™t need high capacity magazines and semi-auto rifles to defend yourself.

The other insane part is he says voting should be reserved to those who can use it responsibly (which of course is code for only GOP votes are legitimate), but doesnā€™t make any suggestion of gun ownership having any mechanism to ensure responsible use.

The core two ideasā€¦they the in-group are entitled to their weapons because itā€™s their entitlement to both declare others deserving of violence and snap-decide the legitimacy of the law and the government, but other peopleā€”the out-groupā€”arenā€™t entitled to vote but must earn franchise through complianceā€¦are axioms of reactionaries.

Word salad? Sure. Meaningless? I donā€™t think so. Heā€™s vocalizing the practical impact, if not the unstated intent, of the voter suppression laws in combination with the constant push toward relaxing every barrier to owning a gun.

youā€™re both right, of course.

what i was getting at is it doesnt have to actually make sense or be consistent or stand up to scrutiny, or be true in any real or historical sense.

i said it therefore itā€™s true

During his Tuesday coronavirus briefing, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice (R) gave full details of West Virginiaā€™s new vaccine incentive program, WTRF reports.

Among the prizes included in the first lottery held in June: a million dollars, education scholarships, trucks, hunting rifles, and shotguns

Inevitable right?

I got asked that at my Citizenship interview about a month ago.

I had to affirm that both in the military, and in my elected position on the village board (and sign papers to that effect).

I also got asked if I would be willing to take up arms to defend the country.

At the risk of supporting guns, Iā€™d say that auctioning away a hunting rifle or a shotgun for getting many more people vaccinated is _probably_ a worthwhile tradeoff amongst a Covid-19 ā€œskepticalā€ (Iā€™m being nice here) population.

A virus spread by one person can kill many more people than a person with a gun. Shooting someone wonā€™t lead to everyone being shot suddenly shooting others, but a virulent Covid-19 denier living amongst other covid-19 deniers will infect others and turn them into infecters.

If I thought my younger coworkers were being lazy about getting the shot - theyā€™re not, itā€™s the older right wing types that are idiots - Iā€™d suggest an nVidia 3090 raffle.

Those are more useful to a dumbass who doesnā€™t get vaccinated on their own than an education is.

If I was a new mom and found out this idiot was near me or my child in the hospital, I would raise 12 levels of hell with hospital management and perhaps end up in jail for assault. This is someone with an education who fucking knows better and is ignoring science and medicine. She needs to be fired, yesterday. The shots cost nothing and are available all over the place, thereā€™s no excuse. Except being a selfish asshole and being proud of it.

Interesting list of worthless people that will have a crazy asshole on their shows.

Comedian Owen Benjamin once had a moderately successful Hollywood career, landing roles in movies and TV shows and briefly becoming engaged to actress Christina Ricci. After moving to the right, he appeared on podcasts hosted by Joe Rogan, Steven Crowder, and Ben Shapiroā€™s Daily Wire.
