An Enchanting Tiny Desk (Home) Concert by Venezuelan Artist Maye

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with an “El Tiny” takeover of the (home) concert series, featuring J Balvin, Camila Cabello and several more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.

Anamaria Sayre | September 22, 2021
maye’s sultry vocals and ethereal energy conjure a world in which areperias shrouded in hazy bubbles and twinkly lights feels astonishingly normal.

The enchanting pop singer fills her “El Tiny” home stage — the artist’s favorite Venezuelan eatery in Miami — with family and friends, su propia gente. She opens with a short and simple rendition of the soon-to-be-released “Maybe Baby” before dropping her instrument and transitioning to an up-tempo, vocal-driven performance of “Yours.” Picking the electric guitar back up, she strums along with a steady percussion and accompanying guitars for a soulful premiere of brand-new track “Descifrar,” emanating an understated and consistent confidence fitting for a pop reina on the rise. She closes out the set with a full-bodied execution of “Tú,” showcasing her signature tropicalia-meets-dream pop sound.

maye’s effortless sashay from English to Spanish in her songs and speech represent an important facet of the El Tiny audience. Featuring a whole crew of Venezuelan-Americans, including her famous Latin singer-songwriter papá, Fernando Osorio on the traditional Venezuelan cuatro, the third performance in our Hispanic Heritage Month series authentically represents the experience of a family like maye’s — one that exists in both planes, two worlds.

Given a moment and a platform like this, maye seizes the opportunity and creates an alternate universe, where barriers of culture and language dissolve and areperias sparkle.

Okay, entirely seriously.

Well, the mergers and acquisitions of intellectual property are complete.

The Impossible Project (a group of people set on acquiring and producing the film for Polaroid cameras after Polaroid went bankrupt) has now merged their camera and film production with the acquisition of the remaining Polaroid properties.

Because the Impossible Project did not own the property rights to the film when they acquired the film factory, they had to engineer new film to work in the old cameras. (I’ve used the film they produce in a Polaroid One Step; my mother still has her old Polaroid 104 Land Camera for which you can also get film.)

They have renamed themselves Polaroid.

They also have a new line of instant film cameras, including an updated SX-70 (their most popular instant film camera they ever produced).

They have invented a printer which will take an image from a smart phone’s memory and print it on Polaroid film.

We’re just going to go full on Nazi over at FOX, aren’t we?

Since FOX gets the overwhelming majority of its money from cable company clearance fees, the only real way to hurt them is to cancel cable service if your company won’t stop carrying them.

Meanwhile, if you are a “member” of USAA, you should definitely be on the horn with them telling them they must stop all adverts on FOX Fascist Network or you will take your business elsewhere.

Vaccinations of any kind are abundantly available here in the wild north country. I literally scheduled a flu shot at a local Walgreen’s after church on Sunday a couple of weeks back, told Mrs. Fish I’d be home late from church, took my paperwork with me, and that was the end of it. The nurse who administered the shot was a bit unprepared, so it seemed like they weren’t giving out a lot of flu shots, but she did the job, I thanked her, and went on my merry way.

Well, the Confederacy is a big part of South Carolina’s history, being the first state to secede from the Union, the birthplace of the Confederacy. So it only stands to reason that they would fight to the death to protect it.

Sunshine kills the backroom deal to privatise the Omaha Public Library.

Amid backlash over library plans, Heritage exec says Omaha system will remain ‘public entity’ (Omaha World-Herald)

This is also why local journalists matter.

An earlier plan to rework the Omaha Public Library’s oversight and operational structure is not under consideration as part of a major capital investment in the libraries, a philanthropic leader said Wednesday.

Omaha’s Heritage Services, which has led a series of local civic philanthropy efforts, is planning a campaign for what one official called potentially the largest private donation in the Omaha Public Library’s history.

The World-Herald reported earlier this month on key parameters of the project: Demolishing the downtown W. Dale Clark Library, building a new downtown branch, establishing a new central library and book distribution hub near 72nd and Dodge Streets, and overall setting up Omaha’s libraries for the future.

After discussions had gone on behind the scenes for months, the newspaper developed details about the plans after filing a public records request with the City of Omaha and receiving more than 400 pages of emails and documents.

Alaska hits another daily record with over 1,200 COVID-19 cases reported as hospitalizations tick up

Alaska’s current COVID-19 surge hit new heights Wednesday as the state reported another 1,251 new cases, marking another daily case record since the pandemic began as hospitals continue to operate under extreme stress and some are forced to ration care.

It’s the second time in two weeks that the state has shattered its daily case record: The previous high was recorded last Wednesday, with 1,095 cases, followed by a second consecutive day of more than 1,000 new infections.

Our number of hospitalisations here are climbing (twenty more since yesterday) but the state is not (yet) short of staffed beds. Currently 435 are in hospital statewide.

datanexus-dhhs.ne.gov

Staffed regular and ICU beds in the state are running about 25% (unevenly spread since hospital capacity is much greater in the eastern part of the state).

Getting back to attention-starved Laura Loomer for a moment. My favorite of her ridiculous stunts was the GREAT TIRE SAGA of 2017. I watched it unfold in real time and it was quite something. For anyone who missed that melodrama—

I had completely forgotten about that. Thanks for the mammaries!

The Washington Post is supposed to not have a paywall around CoronaVirus articles, including the one below. Reportedly you can subscribe without charge to their coronavirus email newsletter:

A summary on the medical care rationing:

Long-feared rationing of medical care has become a reality in some parts of the United States as the delta variant drives a new wave of coronavirus cases, pushing hospitals to the brink.

Alaska and Idaho have activated statewide “crisis standards of care,” in which health systems can prioritize patients for scarce resources — based largely on their likelihood of survival — and even deny treatment. The decisions affect covid and non-covid patients. Some health care providers in Montana have turned to crisis standards as well, while Hawaii’s governor this month released health workers from liability if they have to ration care.

Some states have no crisis standards of care plans, while others just created them during the pandemic. The common goal: Give health-care workers last-resort guidance to make potentially wrenching decisions. But people disagree on the best calculus.

“We only end up needing crisis standards of care when our other systems have utterly failed,” said Emily Cleveland Manchanda, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

Hospitals overwhelmed by covid are turning to ‘crisis standards of care.’ What does that mean?

Wow! My first thought was “How many died in that?”

From later in the reddit discussion:

Did everyone make it? Did the plane land / crash safely away from population ?

Skydiving instructor Mike Robinson was at 12,000 feet, just seconds away from his fourth and final jump of the day, when a second plane carrying other skydivers struck the aircraft he was in, sending them all tumbling toward the ground.
None of the nine skydivers or two pilots sustained serious injury when the two planes collided in midair Saturday evening in far northwest Wisconsin near Lake Superior. Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration were in the area Sunday talking to those involved, and the cause of the incident was still being investigated, said FAA spokesman Roland Herwig.

Cook County is only 64.3% fully vaccinated (12+) and 82.7% with at least one shot. It really seems that there are a lot of residents who may have gotten the first shot and never went back for the second

Yup. It sucks around here but it could be much, much worse.

Greets and saluts from the soon to be soggy NYC metro area. We’ve got more rain in the forecast and flood watches are in place, but I hope we don’t see the torrential rains we experienced from Ida. As it is, even a moderate rain over a period of time might cause flooding in low lying areas, so best to be safe.

But that’s not what has me most worried. Just learned that a long time friend and kid both got diagnosed with covid. He was vaccinated, and she’s too young. Both have mild symptoms, but they’re both miserable and upset and dealing with all kinds of unknowns.

I’m pissed that we don’t have better contact tracing to help identify where/how people are getting sick. I have my suspicions on where they got it, and it just strengthen my belief that masking in crowded areas no matter if they’re indoors/outdoors is my best choice, even being fully vaccinated myself.
