re: #95 ckkatz

I have seen several tweets referring to this issue in the past few weeks. I’ve not yet worked out whether there is anything to them. However, my first impulse is that this explanation is way too easy:

Regarding Explore Talent (and IMDB):

Anyone can create an account there. A person simply appearing on those sites does not indicate they themselves put those up.

For example, one of those listed on the site is Rep. Lauren Bobert. Bobert never worked or advertised as a model. The Explore Talent entry for her is suspicious for that reason.

We’ve used to exclude three people from our christmas day celebration. This makes me sad.

You don’t need to be sad for excluding people, particularly if it’s over the pandemic and they won’t comply with safety measures.

My wife and I have both been excluded from Christmas get togethers and celebrations for many, many years. I assure you our family members who exclude us because we don’t believe as they are not sad they exclude us.

Those same loving Christians in my family have told the few who will have anything to do with me that they would not come if I was invited by them (my mother and one cousin). I stay away because I don’t wish to ruin the holiday for those two when they hold get-togethers.

We have finished the Deb Christmas, and the kids and grandkids have scattered off to the Muggle version. We had about a dozen at dinner and the gift exchange, every one of them vaxxed and boosted except the 11 yr old, who is not due for his booster yet. Grandson1 had to go for a week to his father in Florida. Wife will have to pick him up and fly him to Colorado. That’s the danger— N95s all the way.

The former Website GirlsDoPorn was shut down in 2020 when its principals were convicted of sex trafficking by force or fraud in 2019. Some of the content GirlsDoPorn got came from people at Explore Talent, Craigslist, and other sites.

Excellent point!

Thoughtful observations such as yours are why I mentioned the tweets here.

Obviously there is some first hand information that tfg did hire actors for the crowd in some of his early campaign events. The Trump Tower announcement of his campaign start, for one example.

tfg also had a lot of connections from his entertainment career and did bring over some of them.

And tfg did seem to choose entertainment, optics and drama over substance.

But all of these seem, at least to me, more like secondary tools to achieve tfg goals.

My sister had been talking up how great my nephew’s neighborhood is. They all get together every weekend and they’re kids all play in the quiet street. They all come to my sister’s house regularly because she loves having them around.
I dropped off some stuff at her house today and she told me I probably wouldn’t want to come into the house because one of the kids has covid. She’s got her three shots but is concerned about her status now too.
I arrived, set the stuff on the porch, knocked on the door and walked about half way back to the street. I had a quick conversation with her from 15 feet back. Her family is on the “we want to live a normal life” track and I always have a bad feeling that someone in her family is going to run out of luck (I don’t say this to her). They think I worry too much, and they are right.

Ouch! But, I guess, also congratulations. I hope that you do not have to deal with that again. But, I have heard that inspectors tend to return to locations of success.

Washington DC used to be notorious about unprovoked towing of vehicles. In the 1970’s I was walking in Georgetown and a lady approached me. She asked if the police had been towing. I asked why and she said that her car was missing and she was uncertain if it had been towed or stolen.

There was a limousine service that would pick you up, serve you a glass of champagne on the drive over to the impoundment lot, then pay the fines. All for a rather large fee. It was very popular.

I just missed having my car towed one time there as well. I got back to my car after the ticket, but before the tow truck arrived. I was able to move my car to a different spot and then sat on the trunk of the car, blocking the ‘Tow’ sticker. The tow truck came by but couldn’t see any car to be towed. So they left.

Nebraska’s quandary: Can it force more citizens to work? (News Channel Nebraska)

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Even in normal times Nebraska has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation, with fewer than two million people and plenty of jobs to go around. But with some workers slow to return to work after COVID-19 shutdowns, the state has hit new depths, recording the country’s lowest-ever state unemployment rate of 1.8% in November.

Now Gov. Pete Ricketts, who frequently expounds on the value of work, is confronting an intriguing question: Can a governor force citizens to work, even if they apparently aren’t eager or able to do so?

Ricketts is certainly trying every option imaginable to get Nebraskans into jobs, including requiring people to confer with job coaches before seeking unemployment benefits.

I did not see where the assailant had a visible firearm. The only mention of a weapon in the article is a metal cable lock.

Police really need to change their sop and their training. Because they are killing innocent passerby.

Nobody should expect a 14 year old girl to have to out think the police on their decision to use deadly force. That shooting was a choice by the police.

Yes, the concept of police ‘warrior’ always bugged me. That meant that they had to go to war _against_ somebody.

War consists of heavy use of force for political purposes. (“War is the continuation of politics by other means.” Clauswitz.) Which quite often ends up with less than moral clarity.

I knew WW2 vets that, over the later years of their lives, thought over their experiences and wondered if they could have done something differently and had a more moral result.

The police need to go back to being protectors and defenders. Which is a totally different mission.

That outhouse cartoon set off an unsuccessful search for some info I seem to remember about the Civil War Sanitation Commission.

The Sanitation Commission was a group associated with the War Department who attempted to educate Northern Soldiers on the concept of sanitation. This was at a time before sanitation and the concept of germs were fully accepted as valid. I seem to remember that the commission put out a series of pamphlets, including one titled “The Coffee Tastes Better Upstream of the Outhouse”

Iirc, the use of sewers and municipal sewage treatment wasn’t fully settled on until the late 19th Century. Not that long ago.

Small chance of aurora borealis here on the High Plains.

A G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for the 24 December UTC-day. The M1 flare associated coronal mass ejection (CME) of 20 December, 2021, at 1136 UTC (6:36 am ET) was analyzed further and model consensus continued to indicate a possible flanking influence as it reaches Earth’s orbital position. Modeling indicated arrival timing as early as late on the 23 December UTC-day to early on 24 December. However, most ejecta is still expected to pass south of Earth and the tenuous nature of this CME makes for a low-confidence forecast. The problem that Ricketts and other red state assholes are discovering is that most of the able-bodied got tired of being pissed on and told it was “trickle down,” so they moved to greener pastures (figuratively and literally), such that most of those left in the UE line are not the sort of people suited to long hours of backbreaking labor for shitty wages. No amount of coercion or threats is gonna change that situation any time soon. For example, you’re not going to get an office worker to spend an hour or longer driving out to a farm to make less than they spent in gas money just getting to the job.

Civil War Sanitary Fairs (Wichita State University, digitised collection of original documents and letters)

The Civil War sanitary fairs represent one of the most successful democratic, humanitarian and philanthropic efforts in American history. The fairs raised millions of dollars for the medical and humanitarian care of Union soldiers during the Civil War and provided a way for civilians to contribute time, energy and money to show their support for the Union cause. The items in this digital collection include sheet music, broadsides, stereographs, lithographs, financial appeals and other manuscript material, ground plans, art catalogs and ephemera. These materials, from the Kantor Collection on the U.S. Sanitary Commission and Sanitary Fairs donated by Robert and Marjorie Kantor, document the importance of the fairs and the U.S. Sanitary Commission, the agency for whose benefit the fairs were held, to improve both civilian morale and medical care for a predominantly volunteer army.

Here’s an oblique reference:

Hygiene Inspections

In addition to collecting supplies for soldiers through its local depots and volunteer workers, the USSC trained nurses and regularly sent experts to Union camps to inspect hygiene conditions. The agents—of whom Livermore was one—looked into sanitary practice at field hospitals and kitchens, ensured that latrines had been dug in a place where freshwater supplies could not become contaminated, and issued recommendations on how to improve conditions.

Fringe factions of MAGA world are imploding after Trump publicly advocated for the COVID-19 jab (Business Insider)

The fringe factions of the right-wing have erupted in anger and confusion at former President Donald Trump’s enthusiastic lauding of the COVID-19 vaccine this week.

On two separate occasions, Trump advocated for people to take the COVID-19 vaccine this past week. On Sunday, crowds booed the former president when he revealed to Bill O’Reilly that he had taken a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot and is pro-vaccination. Trump doubled down on his stance during an interview with conservative commentator Candace Owens on Wednesday, hailing the vaccine as “one of the greatest achievements of mankind.”

“No, the vaccine worked. But some people aren’t taking it. The ones that get very sick and go to the hospital are the ones that don’t take their vaccine,” Trump told Owens.

On Aug. 30, 2020, Herman Cain tweeted: “It looks like the virus is not as deadly as the mainstream media first made it out to be.”

Or at least his official Twitter account did. Because Cain had died of COVID-19 about a month before at the age of 74. The former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City was diagnosed nine days after attending a rally for Donald Trump’s reelection in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he and many attendees gathered indoors and notably refused to wear masks as the pandemic raged.

In the days after his death, the internet latched onto the irony of Cain’s demise as a result of his own imprudence, leading to the creation of the “Herman Cain Award” message board on the popular website Reddit. The progeny of the notorious Darwin Award is posthumously given to people who “have made public declaration of their anti-mask, anti-vax, or COVID-hoax views, followed by admission to hospital for COVID.”

With about 438,000 members in this Reddit community, there is certainly no lack of audience for sardonic schadenfreude. But it begs a pressing moral question: Should these nominees deserve our sympathy rather than our ridicule?

(more from the Kansas City Star via Yahoo!)

Don’t snicker at the ‘Herman Cain Award.’ Recipients died of misinformation, not COVID

They died of conservatism, not misinformation. The correct information is available. Conservatives are wholesale rejecting it, just as they do expertise, education, experience, empathy, other words which begin with E.

“This just shows that X hasn’t got the resolve and the determination to keep beating his head against the wall and therefore has no credibility”

The credibility shit is usually pumped out by people who were wrong the whole way, but figure that another Friedman unit of doing the same damn shit will magically change everything. Or at least put off the reckoning.

Getting out of a swamp like this means more freedom of action in other directions, and other countries know it. We had to kiss Pakistan’s ass for years to keep a logistics route open to Afghanistan, and now that need has vanished, for example, and I think there will be subtle and not so subtle knock-on effects from that.

And in another decade, Afghanistan will be like Vietnam or Iraq: That war that all the “experts” (who universally pushed for it) advised against and “everybody” agrees was a mistake to get involved in.

After appeals to community, appeals to reason, appeals to emotion, appeals to patriotism, appeals to self-interest, outright bribery, none of it works. They will not admit they are wrong. They cannot because it goes against their faith.

Ridicule has always been a social tool. r/HermanCainAward is the XXI Century version of a pillory.

[…]

They were a boy and girl. Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish; but prostrate, too, in their humility. Where graceful youth should have filled their features out, and touched them with its freshest tints, a stale and shrivelled hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and pulled them into shreds. Where angels might have sat enthroned, devils lurked, and glared out menacing. No change, no degradation, no perversion of humanity, in any grade, through all the mysteries of wonderful creation, has monsters half so horrible and dread.
Scrooge started back, appalled. Having them shown to him in this way, he tried to say they were fine children, but the words choked themselves, rather than be parties to a lie of such enormous magnitude.
“Spirit! are they yours?” Scrooge could say no more.
“They are Man’s,” said the Spirit, looking down upon them. “And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. Deny it!” cried the Spirit, stretching out its hand towards the city. “Slander those who tell it ye! Admit it for your factious purposes, and make it worse! And bide the end!”
“Have they no refuge or resource?” cried Scrooge.
“Are there no prisons?” said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words. “Are there no workhouses?”
The bell struck twelve.

Poland circling the drain… Snipped from a chat I frequent…

The Polish government introduces a new school subject, called “History and Modernity”, which will replace a subject called “Knowledge about Society”, where kids learnt how the government works and basic knowledge about ideologies like origins of liberalism, fa**ism and socialism.
The new subject will teach kids about:
1. Sexual revolution and it’s intellectual inspirations from neomarxism
2. The difference between ecology and ecologism
3. The communist idea of separation of church and state
4. What John Paul II meant for poland
5. What is The New World Order and what are the examples of it functioning
6. Reasons and consequences of post-communists coming to power in Poland in 1993
7. What are the main societal changes on the west on the example of the expansion of the ideology of political correctness, multiculturalism, and new definitions of human rights, family, marriage and gender
8. What is the difference between tolerating and affirmation
9. Why was the Smoleńsk plane crash the greatest catastrophe of Poland after WWII

Drove up to western NY to visit family for the holiday. (Brother, sister-in-law, and niece) yesterday. Good weather for a drive.

And woke up this morning to an inch or so of snow on the ground. and things being quite wintry outside.

Next couple of days will be small group in relative isolation. Including four cats (two outdoor, two indoor) and a flock of chickens (they have their own house).

As the person noted, cryptocurrency is simply the latest Ponzi scheme, replacing the stock market from before.

The only way to win is not to play.

The stock market is not a Ponzi scheme, though those in at the beginning of a stock benefit the most and there are stocks(Enron) or money managers (Bernie Madoff, e.g.) who are criminals and can create a Ponzi scheme out of investments. Stocks represent ownership in part of the economy; many pay dividends which are from the profits of the corporation. As long as we have a capitalist system, it is a way for average people who have some savings to benefit financially from the economic growth.

These people get “alternative facts” from their news sources that they believe wholeheartedly and they claim that we are the ones who are misled. Correct information is available but they don’t accept those sources. Just like we know that Fox, Newsmax, OAN, Trump himself etc are all liars, they “know” that CNN, MSNBC, Democrats are all liars. These are lies that they want to believe but brainwashing is very effective and they are gullible. Conservatism is the source of misinformation, but it is misinformation.

Didja notice how some of those malcontents leaving commie California were after a white Christmas, but not snow?

Not puttin that on Twitter lol

There are two types of people who yearn for snow (imho). Those who are into winter sports and those who have never experienced the “pleasure” of having to shovel it out of their driveways. The latter I have found soon change their minds on how great it is/ will be.

He could go enlisted and call the new dog “Chief”.

“Hey, where’s Commander and Chief?”

“He’s out driving his new electric Corvette. Why?”

Chief also can refer to senior Warrants. Where you could also use ‘Gunner’ which is an USMC infantry field CWO

I was strolling this morning in a balmy 46 degrees in suburban Chicago; it’s supposed to reach 54 today and no snow is on the horizon for the rest of the year! Might be a little chilly some days but very mild for us.

Of course I was in Chicago in 1967, when the temperatures reached 65 on January 24th, only to be followed by a 23 inch snowstorm on January 26th. But right now we are enjoying the weather (yes — it may be raining all afternoon but that’s Chicago).

I can’t stand being cold. Maybe it’s from growing up in mild winters and scorching Summers. Snow is for visiting. Like grab the cameras and take it in.

Unloading trailers outside in sub zero winter wonderlands for 27 years gives you a whole new appreciation of “cold”.
When ice is on your beard.
You have trouble speaking and thinking is slowing.
Your mini vibram soles sound like taps.
The Canadians in snowmobile overalls are also cold.
You have long Johns, jeans and sweats over the jeans. And still freezing.
Your gloves are getting frozen.

And it is getting colder with more snow and you aren’t done yet.

To be honest, I used to love the stuff when I was younger. But now I despise it even more than I do my hisstors. Part of it is just getting old and part of it is from my HRT. Add those two together and my tolerance for the cold is just about nonexistent.

The admission that Cheeto could be blackmailed is the first rational thing Alex has said since 1988.
Maybe Soros found out what the GRU has on Trump, co-opted it himself, and silenced Putin by threatening to reveal details of the whole nasty plot. Or maybe he torched one of Putin’s Zil limousines with the Jewish Space Laser just to show Vlad that Russkie space defenses are not so good as he thought.

But that is up to the parents and not the Big Liar. Why does Trump find this particular myth a problem when on a daily basis he promotes his own mythology about the world? Is it because he isn’t the center of the story? Or perhaps his parents told him at a very young age that there was no Santa and he wants other children to feel the same disappointment as he did when he learned the truth. Cruelty is the centerpiece of his ideology.

Ok, I’m not sure what “hool aid” and “chocolate milh” are, but “sweat tea” is definitely out.

Reminds me of one of Johnny Carson’s “Karnak the Magfinicent” answer and question routines.
Karnak, divining answer: “Blood, Sweat, and Tears.”
Opens envelope and reads question: “What are the three least favorite flavors at Baskin Robbins?”
