Maria Bartiromo said on Fox Business that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was concocted by White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan to distract from Hillary Clinton’s campaign spying on Donald Trump.

Dan Pfeiffer: “The Republican message on Ukraine is all over the map. They are calling Biden weak, simultaneously claiming his sanctions won’t do enough or will do too much, arguing he is unfocused or is too focused on Putin.”

“This Republican incoherence is not by design. In some cases, it reflects legitimate differences in the party (i.e. pro-fascist v. fascist-curious), but it’s mostly a bunch of dumb people saying whatever dumb thing first pops into their pea brains. However, the strategic confusion ends up being a feature, not a bug. Republicans are — somewhat inadvertently — setting up a ‘heads we win, tails you lose’ dynamic on the Ukrainian issue. They want to attack Biden for being weak and attack him if sanctions lead to higher gas prices or other disruptions to American life.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that President Biden should increase sanctions against Russia “all the way up” after Moscow began a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, The Hill reports.

Said McConnell: “Ratchet the sanctions all the way up. Don’t hold any back Every single available tough sanction should be employed and should be employed now.”

There have been a number of lists of suggested groups for donations that have been posted in social media.

As usual, it is often difficult to determine whether the poster is legitimate or not. And, even if legitimate, how much vetting the poster did on the groups that they are suggesting.

My thought would be, in uncertain times, to work through a known and trusted group. Red Cross certainly could be one option.

If you do find a good set of groups, please share with the rest of us! (Not much help, know.)

So, no Swift cutoff yet? I understand why _strategically_, they don’t want to cutoff Russia from SWIFT, even for something as blatant as an offensive war against a neighbor with ZERO justification, based on outright lies.

You get a lot of power by controlling SWIFT, but if you use your power often enough, people will create another system for international bank messaging, which amongst others Russia and China are trying to do, and then you have _far_ less power.

Timothy Snyder, in the ‘Petryshyn Memorial Lecture” (Thank you to the Lizard who recommended it here!) notes that what seems to threaten Putin the most about Ukraine isn’t NATO, it’s the European Union. The idea that a former Soviet State could integrate with the West and become a prosperous democracy undermines his whole kleptocratic regime.

Snyder also notes that the USSR dissolved in a very unusual way for Imperial systems. Most empires dissolve from the periphery inward. In the case of the USSR, it dissolved from the center. Russia decided that the rest of the empire was too expensive and no longer wanted to maintain it.

It seems to me that the economic dis-integration with the west will suit Putin and the oligarchs who are insulated and isolated. The rest of the Russian population is screwed, though.

I can’t REALLY blame the European leaders who hope they can avoid a full-blown energy crisis by not going as far as disconnecting Putin from SWIFT. There is, of course, no guarantee that this measure would be effective against a guy who looks increasingly like an irrational actor in any case.

Having said that, I doubt taking yachts away from Putin’s asshole buddies is going to accomplish anything either.

I would also like to urge everyone to hold onto their money for a while. History has shown that the organizations which tend to help people the most in times of crisis are rarely among the first to ask for donations.

Take with a grain of salt, but an eyewitness estimates that the two racing vehicles, a white Mustang and a blue Mustang, we’re doing 110 mph when the white Mustang hit the bus. (The speed limit on that section of Gibson is 40 mph.) The blue vehicle fled the scene. Two students required leg and pelvic surgery due to injuries. Seven students were transported to hospitals in total for examination. The driver of the white Mustang, Mario Perez, 49, was also transported to the hospital and underwent surgery for a broken femur.

So, what the governor and his cronies want us to do is to tell a government agency that what they’ve just done is a crime. We are supposed to report that student because their parents obviously don’t know what’s best for their child. We are calling another human being a crime. In case that didn’t sink in, it needs to be repeated. We are calling another human being a crime.

Remember when people on the right were up in arms about keeping the government out of the doctor-patient relationship? I hate to come to conclusions before all the evidence is back, but I feel that might not have been totally on the level. Make no mistake, this ruling will cost lives. Pure and simple. The governor is a willing accessory, and he’s asking the people who have dedicated their lives to saving children to read out the warrant. I have Real Fear for these children now, and no one’s coming to hold my hand, or the hands of these children and tell us it’s OK.

No sarcasm. The core premise of conservatism is that your body isn’t your own: it belongs to God, but with the silence of God it actually belongs to an org chart of authority figures entitled to extract utility from that body while not having their motives (or appetites) questioned.

Part of that extraction of utility is the choice to destroy a child as a person to make them a better-functioning social widget. Actually killing a kid in the process is spillage, not manslaughter.

Putin’s haste to get this war over with makes more and more sense:

The Daily Beast reported the group is working on a complaint for the Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office saying that their sons who recently joined were told they were going to the border for “drills.” Their contracts were then immediately changed and the young men were moved into a war.

“They are switching entire regiments to contract [soldiers,] although the guys did not submit any formal requests for this, and took no such initiative. There are instances of physical violence, and beatings of those who refuse to become contract soldiers,” said the group’s deputy chair Andrei Kurochkin. “And after that it’s completely unknown [what happens to them], because they take away their phones. We’ve had a flurry of calls from scared mothers all over Russia. They are crying, they don’t know if their children are alive or healthy.”

Morale at home’s already gonna be tanking due to the economic bloodletting, add in soldiers bitterly declaring that they’d been effectively drafted to fight a war they disagreed with and were dying pointless deaths and the fecal matter would truly hit the rotary impeller.

To give a bit of context to what’s going on, while conscription is still practiced in the Russian military, most soldiers only do a 2 year stint (1 year training, 1 year service) before they’re placed on active reserve status. “Contract” soldiers are volunteer soldiers who agree to a term of service like you’d find in the West post-Vietnam.

What’s alleged to be going on in the Russian ranks would be like American soldiers being told that their contracts have been voided and they’re being drafted “for the duration.” These soldiers are being robbed of their autonomy and told that their asses now belong to the state even after their conscription period has expired.

So long as they’ve rigged some cratering charges, then they can deny the Russians the use of that airfield even if they have to retreat from it. Prepping the runways for transports would mean bringing in engineers, not something done easily if all access routes are blocked.

under President Biden’s leadership, the United States remains the world’s number one producer of both oil and natural gas

yeah.

But this is not a good thing.

re: #215 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

My guess is a warbler of some sort. And if they aren’t in breeding colors yet, or they are just coming in, than they might be blander than the e-bird pictures make them out to be.

My personal guess is Pine Warblers. They are seed eaters and thus will visit feeders in the winter.

I hope they come back. I took a couple of blurry pics through a dirty window.
I’m now leaning more to stpaulbear’s suggestion of a goldfinch in winter plumage.

What’s a good thing is that Biden is making serious efforts to move the USA away from reliance on coal/oil/gas and to alternative energy, especially in connection with energy generation AND consumption (ie vehicles in particular).

But you should have known that before making that comment.

I have grandchildren and great-grandchildren and I am very happy with the direction Biden’s America is taking in this area.

re: #178 Targetpractice

Putin’s haste to get this war over with makes more and more sense:

[Embedded content]

Morale at home’s already gonna be tanking due to the economic bloodletting, add in soldiers bitterly declaring that they’d been effectively drafted to fight a war they disagreed with and were dying pointless deaths and the fecal matter would truly hit the rotary impeller.

my dad was a chaplain in vietnam. he fucking hated the recruiting sergeants because they constantly were telling 17 year-old boys that if they joined up, avoiding the draft, they’d get a cushy stateside gig. next thing they knew, they were taking rocket attacks on some observation post in Nam.

re: #211 Targetpractice

I’m honestly surprised there aren’t a few MAGAt jackasses demanding that Trump be thanked for providing those Javelins, even if he tried to use them to extort political favors from Ukraine.

and just think, this is the easy part of the invasion…the “softening up” by air. At some point, you have to occupy that land with troops, and when you do, suddenly you have a whole bunch of targets who don’t come with 6 inches of steel armor. My fantasy for Ukraine involves railway artillery, but unfortunately, I don’t think anyone ever managed to get those to work optimally. Imagine if you had a battleship that moved around on rails, and could fire shit out to 32,000 yards. Not practical, but I’ll bet if someone is raining 1,000 pound shells down on you, it would tend to demoralize you and everyone with you.

re: #199 Backwoods_Sleuth

so, the other day I saw a pair of new birds at the feeders.
They looked exactly like yellow throated sparrows, down to every identifying feature. Every. Single. One.

Problem? There are native to Asia, specifically India and surrounding areas in that region.

I couldn’t find any bird even remotely close that is native to or known to be passing through eastern Kentucky.

maybe they’re like the sewer alligators of NYC — somebody didn’t want to take care of the pets they got for their birthday, so they set them free.

You’re probably seeing goldfinches in winter feathers. I have lots of them here. I’ll try to get pics tomorrow.
