Looks like US and European Policy is undergoing a metamorphosis. And, sadly, to preserve Ukraine, this appears necessary:

Your comment on generals reminded me of this Civil War anecdote and Abraham Lincoln quote:

In March 1863, John Mosby’s Confederate Rangers raided Fairfax Courthouse, Virginia, capturing two captains, 30 Privates, 58 horses and Brigadier General Edwin Stoughton. “For that I am sorry,” Lincoln said when told of the capture, “for I can make Brigadier Generals, but I can’t make horses.”

I am the very model of a Russian Major General
I have a lot of medals, but I’m really quite expendable
My forces get destroyed by some rockets quite untraceable
I lose my tanks, and other ranks, and quickly are replaceable!

It has the distinctly pungent odor of woowoo bullshit, too:

The most important of the latter was “Ethnogenesis and the Biosphere,” in which Gumilyov explained his theory of how ethnic groups, or ethnies, come about. He saw ethnicity as an intrinsic natural phenomenon that emerged in humans as a response to their natural surroundings, with only dynamic ethnies showing the ability to rapidly expand and adapt to new environments, before following a predictable cycle of stagnation and, eventually, disappearance.

The key to that dynamism, he argued, was neither natural nor human-made, but cosmic: a force called passionarnost. This he defined as “the ability for single-minded super-efforts, overriding even our most basic instinct for self-preservation.” That energy emerged from the “biosphere,” which from time to time erupted with energy to give birth to new great ethnies. His historical works were imbued with these theories but had their own separate implications.

JFC, only 10% of Russia’s tanks were actually battle-ready? No wonder they’re getting their asses handed to them.

All I can gather is that Putin’s lackeys in the Defense Ministry were using their defense budget to buy villas, yachts, high-end watches and Ferraris.

This is very true.

Additionally, I seem to remember a quote attributed to the Russians that our presence in Afghanistan kept the religious militants from coming into the ‘stans and Russia over the past two decades.

Russia’ 12,600 mile land border is now a lot more exposed. Plus, with half their active duty Army being tied up and trashed in Ukraine, they are a _lot_ more vulnerable.

And a lot of folks are starting to test this. Right now its just little pokes to see what happens. But it could escalate back in the 1990’s again.

Azerbaijan/Armenia, Ossetia/Georgia, Moldova/Transnistria are all stirring publicly. Finland/Sweden warming up to NATO. And who knows what is quietly happening in Central Asia and further East. Plus, for some inane reason, Russia has suddenly decided to troll Japan over the Kuril Islands.

Putin has not only trashed the Russian economy and military, but also its geo-political situation.
