My first big computer purchase in more than 10 years: an iMac 24” M1 8/8 core 16GB RAM 1TB SSD.

The Apple Store is back ordered until June on these higher end models, but I found one brand new from a reputable store on eBay for a couple hundred less than the list price. Arrives next week. I can’t wait.

Yes, lots happening today down that way!

Moldova is one of three Romanian speaking regions. It was part of Russia and the Soviet Union. It became a country on the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Russia instigated a revolt in one section and then sent troops in.

Right now Putin is trying to stir things up in order to destabilize Moldova, threaten Romania and maybe draw Ukrainian troops from the battlefronts on the other side of Ukraine.

There was the ‘attack’ on the Transnistrian government building yesterday which has all the hallmarks of an internal job.

Where the transmitter attack came from is still unclear. Moldova claims it was a Transistrian internal job. Ukraine does have some interest in shutting down the transmitters, though.

Meanwhile, Russia missiled a bridge on the olny land route from Romania into Odesa:

That math doesn’t check out. $1M * 330M = $330T. That doesn’t mean $40B isn’t a lot of money, and he could’ve done something better with it than throw it at a social media company in an attempt to be relevant and edgy, but let’s be more real with our scale. The actual amount is $100 per person, which isn’t going to change anybody’s life.

“…Popular media and discourse have tended to silo all of us Others into different categories (women’s news, queer news, labor news, “the race beat”) but to conservatives, trans rights, cis gay rights, and women’s rights all fall under the heading of “gender ideology,” summed up neatly by advocate Gillian Branstetter as “a catch all for any policy or behavior outside of strict gender roles — including allowing women outside the home.” Anti-gender thinking is what allows groups like the Heritage Foundation and the ADF to seamlessly pivot between astroturfing states with anti-trans bills and attacking the right to abortion, or why TERFs feel comfortable hiring Proud Boys as bodyguards. To point out that all these fights are connected is standard intersectionality theory, but what I am saying is slightly different: To our enemies, they are the same fight, waged by the same organizations, with the same resources and funding. Meanwhile, the targeted populations tend to fight separately and alone.”

The most painfully exhausting thing to see is queer “Gender Criticals” who go full bore into the anti-trans shit, not even bothering to see that the same language being used to attack trans folks now is almost literally, down to the exact phrasing, the same language used to attack and demonize gay folks decades before. The language of bigotry rhymes because it so often comes from the exact same place.

After last weekend’s meeting with Zelensky, US SecofDef Austin announced that the US was seeking to weaken Russia to the point that it could no longer attack other countries.

It appears that rather than an off-the-cuff comment, it was a blunt statement of a carefully thought out US Policy. It is also probably why the Ukrainians reacted so appreciatively after the meeting.

I suspect that Putin has bitten off far more than he expected.

The news that ELON MUSK is buying Twitter has thrown Washington into a tizzy over one major question: Will DONALD TRUMP return to his old favorite social media platform and start tweeting again?

As it turns out, no one is more petrified of this than members of Trump’s own party.

On Monday night, in a series of calls and texts with several top GOP insiders, every single one of them told us that they hoped the former president stays the hell away from Twitter, lest he sink their chances at flipping the House and Senate. Some of his allies even think that a return to his old Twitter habits could damage his own brand ahead of a possible third presidential bid in 2024.

“If I’m a Democrat, I’d pray that Elon Musk puts Trump right back on Twitter,” said one House GOP leadership aide, who asked not to be named to speak candidly. “I don’t think it costs Republicans the House, but it certainly will elevate Trump’s opinions — and is going to put Republican candidates and members back having to answer for that.”

One of my criteria for purchasing a carry/camping knife is that I need to be okay with losing/breaking it.

I did violate that once and picked up a Fallkniven A1. It pretty much permanently sits in a box next to my camping gear. And has not yet been outdoors with me.

Instead I either take a $10 Morakniv Companion, or the old surplus Navy knife that I used to carry in the Army.

Why did I carry an old Navy knife in the Army I hear you ask?

Because the knife point is really re-inforced and strong, and very useful for poking open cans when I can’t find my p-38 can opener. Priorities!

It’s not just that Tesla lost $100 billion in value. That’s part of the collateral that he’s likely putting up to buy Twitter. That means he’d need even more Tesla stock to leverage against his buy of Twitter.

His cost to obtain Twitter keeps rising, and the kicker is that the company doesn’t make nearly enough money to be worth it. It’s valued at $44 billion, but with $130 million in profit? Yeah, that’s not going to cover acquisition costs.

This is delicious.

The name “Kentucky” is of native American origin and has been attributed to several different languages with several different possible meanings, including the Iroquois word “ken-tah-ten,” which means land of tomorrow.

Other possible meanings for the name Kentucky: meadow lands, cane and turkey lands, or dark and bloody ground.

statesymbolsusa.org

or

Most experts think that the name Kentucky comes from a Native American language, but they don’t agree on which one. It may have come from the Wyandot name for the area, Kah-ten-tah-teh, which can be roughly translated as “Land of Tomorrow.” It’s also possible that it comes from the Shawnee name for the area, Kain-tuck-ee, which means “At the Head of the River.” Or it may have been derived from the Iroquoian or Mohawk word Kentucke meaning “among the meadows.”

I think I rather like “Land of Tomorrow”

However:

It’s also possible that it comes from the Shawnee name for the area, Kain-tuck-ee, which means “At the Head of the River.”

is most likely since my part of Kentucky (the north and eastern part) is Shawnee country.

why did I think the Iroquoia were a lot norther than that?

This is probably more than you were asking, but….

The Iroquois Confederation, originally of Western New York State did speak 5-6 dialects in the Iroquoian language family.

[I understand that the Seneca Nation (on the Western side of the Iroquois Confederation) dialect and that of the Mohawk Nation (on the Eastern side) were almost mutually un-intelligiable.]

The Huron and Wyandot Nations of the Great Lakes region (and deadly enemies of the Iroquois Confederation)) also spoke languages in the Iroquoian Language family.

As did the Cherokee Nation (also deadly enemies of the Iroquois Confederation), originally from the Western regions of the Carolinas and Georgia , and parts of Eastern Tennessee.

It would be a place to advance human understanding, science, facts, and the arts. It would be a place where trolls have a very short stay, lies and provable junk “science” are removed, and bashing any particular group based on race, sexual orientation, cultural background or religious affiliation/ non-affiliation are instantly banhammered,

Rest assured, if Elon acquires then opens up Twitter to the regular scoundrels, con-men, racists and thugs with no moderation whatsoever the race for the exits will be the stuff of legend. The new liberal leaning site that does effectively moderate will see tremendous success.

That’s mastodon — en.wikipedia.org

There are many individual servers in the “fediverse”. Server maintainers can block entire servers (which you really want to do, as there are lot of sketchy servers you really want to block).

In the Instant Messaging space, there was (and still is) Jabber/XMPP — XMPP being the protocol, and Jabber being a popular client. Of course, there were also a number of servers talking the same protocol (so compatibility with clients), but only as entry points into their own non-distributed server (for either corporate IM, or communication only inside their walled garden).

Interestingly enough, counter.social is built off of a fork of the Mastodon server software, but I do not know if they communicate with other servers.

define ‘the law’

What Musk wants will be the law; it will change on a whim, too, kinda like the current SCOTUS views precedent.

Only way I can interpret it is he wants Twitter to be like a government - unable to regulate any speech whatsoever. He wants to turn Twitter into 4chan.

Oh look- another Republican child porn connection

Thanks AP, totally ignoring the state Rep’s political party until the very end of the article. I’m sure if a Democrat were involved the same reporting standards would apply.

Not.

Fuck you, AP.

There’s a history of horrifying lawbreaking at 4Chan. It was a safe space for freaks because anyone else would stay well clear because of the child pornography posted regularly to this free speech site.

re: #75 ckkatz

After last weekend’s meeting with Zelensky, US SecofDef Austin announced that the US was seeking to weaken Russia to the point that it could no longer attack other countries.

It appears that rather than an off-the-cuff comment, it was a blunt statement of a carefully thought out US Policy. It is also probably why the Ukrainians reacted so appreciatively after the meeting.

I suspect that Putin has bitten off far more than he expected.

I suspect that Putin is grunting out caltrop-shaped turds at this point.
