Friday’s affidavit included a May 25 letter from Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran who defended the former president’s decision to stash highly sensitive material at Mar-a-Lago with the notion that he had ultimate classification authority. But, the government’s affidavit cites a U.S. Code that criminalizes “the unlawful retention of any ‘information related to the national defense,’” regardless of whether it is classified. Rep. Eric Swalwell, Former CIA director John Brennan, and former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti, join Joy Reid to discuss.

I’m not even closes to being an economist, but my thinking was somewhat along these lines yesterday when I heard Powell’s comments. Whether he intended it or not, it goes hand in hand with the “we need a recession to put employers back in the drivers seat by removing workers’ leverage” argument that one actually hears these days. (It’ a good thread) ETA: there’s also intelligent counterargument in the comments—again, I have no training and go by my sour gut.

One aspect of this Trump/intel clusterfuck that doesn’t seem to be getting attention is this:

If senior intelligence officials really did provide Trump with a spy list or other classified information that even the President has no need to know, then they should be prosecuted as accessories to Trump’s crimes.

They knew Trump was a security risk, since anyone who doesn’t know that is grossly unqualified to do intelligence work. There are stiff penalties for letting classified information get into the hands of a security risk, and that security risk being POTUS shouldn’t change a damn thing.

When I was separated I had to sign a couple of forms stating I was informed of the penalties for divulging classified information (extremely harsh) and that I also had to inform the State Dept. anytime I left the U.S. for any reason that wasn’t U.S. Gov. related for 10 years. Also with harsh penalties for not complying. Even after 30 years, and a legal name/gender change, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if my going to Canada hasn’t been noted by one of our intelligence agencies. So yeah, for these fuck wits to blow off just how bad this is, is a slap in the face and highly insulting.

I was TS/NOFORN/EWO (Emergency War Order aka flying off to attack the Warsaw Pact or East Asians with CKO or China/Korea Option). I had the same separation restrictions as an officer.
