The Pie Overlord!  Aug 28, 2022 • 7:21:41pm

Howdy my Lizards.

We are in Clearfield, PA at a Holiday Inn. There was an accident on the 80 and all the traffic was detoured off the highway at Corsica and had to take Rt. 322 over to Allegheny to get back on. I was squashed between 2 long lines of 18 wheelers and we were moving at like an inch an hour. I was running low on gas and I had to pee. This 5-mile detour took 3 AND A HALF HOURS.

FINALLY we got back on the 80 and there was a rest area.

Then there was some other traffic jam because of single lane and shit now it’s dark. I HATE driving in the dark. I managed to white knuckle it until we got to Clearfield (2nd exit!) and now here we are eating turkey sandwiches and getting un-stressed.

Gas is $4.15 in Clearfield, which sucks. It was $3.89 in SE Michigan when I filled up this morning.

The Spencer Mackenzie Cornhole Throwdown and associated country music festival at the Fairgrounds cramped my normal walk path, so this beach near Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center was my second choice to go for a walk on Saturday. Pretty damn good second choice 😎

What I see this as is an admission that Trump is not only going to be indicted, but that the only way he avoids spending the rest of his days at Club Fed is if he can land a jury favorable to him. That unless the DOJ can be scared into dropping the case, Trump is headed for a cell.

Well — the Dems did impeach President Trump — twice in fact. Never got around to really investigating the heart of the Mueller report, thereby allowing the lie that the Russian story was a hoax to take hold and become a “fact”.

We know that the only reason the GOP tried to destroy Clinton was to avenge the forced resignation of Nixon. They will be impeaching Biden on a weekly basis. It’s not as though they have anything of value to propose for governing our nation — only voter suppression, eliminating rights, and tax cuts for the wealthy.

The Kaiju, at least when the art form started in film immediately after WWII, are clearly an embodiment of the victor, or at least its weapons, in the war.

This is something so often missed in recent Godzilla movies, American made movies.

The US-defeats-the-aliens story that is so overdone in big and small screen productions flip that, so that the invader is the loser.

Sat down with my daughter to watch Prey, the Predator prequel.

I swear, it should contain trigger warnings for white supremacist misogynists. It hits all the buttons: a strong female lead, celebrating nature and Native American culture along with scenes of white genocide.

(At least they are perpetrated on French fur trappers, which makes it a bit more bearable.)

This is why any suggestions that either the DOJ pass on prosecuting him or Biden pardon him are so much wasted air. If it’s an argument made in good faith, then it’s just woefully ignorant of the reality that allowing yet another president to skate for massive violations of criminal law will only encourage future presidents to keep pushing the limits until the system collapses. And if you’re a MAGAt/Trumpanista making such arguments in obvious bad faith, feel free to go fornicate with yourself with a rusty farm implement.

The GQP strategy for the midterms was the same as it’s ever been: Run on the idea that all the things that they fucked up not 2 years prior remain fucked up and the Dem in office is responsible for simultaneously not fixing it fast enough and doing too much at the same time. And much like 2010, the idea that they were guaranteed a “red wave” that would sweep anybody with an (R) next to their name into office has caused a whole bunch of absolute loonies to run, only this time without the divisive effect like the passage of the ACA to split voter opinions.

Trump is scared because he sees no easy exits. Merrick Garland is not some rookie DA who can be bought with promises of “campaign donations,” threatened with “job difficulties” by calling upon people higher up the food chain, or offered an easy “win” of a guilty plea rather than a costly court case where there’s always the possibility he’ll lose.

Likewise, it seems pretty clear from his surprise that the FBI showed up at MAL with a search warrant that he has no insiders at the DOJ any more to feed him information, hence why he and his lawyers are screaming that they’ve a “right” to know what the DOJ has on him.

Compare and contrast how he’s acting now with how he acted during the first impeachment, when he not only had a direct line into the DOJ and the Congressional committees investigating him, but also knew that even if he were impeached than there was no chance he’d be removed from office. Remember that cocky bastard who was telling folks that he’d not only “win” against impeachment, but that he’d come out on top? He’s been replaced with a little kid who knows he fucked around and is now about to find out.

true but how many are running on that alone as their major policy goal / central plank?

and while it might get by in a congressional district it would likely never work statewide/senate or nationwide/president. the base would love it but i think they’d turn off too many others and lose them

Indeed. And even if he only used it as a tool to get what he wants, it’s not unlikely he has fallen prey to what habitual liars often fall prey to, which is to buy into his own lies, nor is it unlikely he and his cronies have long since lost the compass which tells them what lies they actually can get away with.

The Alien part of the franchise always had a strong female lead. Alien vs Predator added a strong female lead to the Predator story.

A March 2016 Atlantic article contained the following discussion about Goldwater — and it indeed appears that was the beginning of the GOP slide into racism and fascism:

“The danger of the Republican party being taken over by the lily-white-ist conservatives is more serious than many people realize,” Jackie Robinson cautioned in his syndicated column in August 1963. He was worried about the rise of Barry Goldwater, whose 1964 presidential bid laid the foundation for the modern conservative movement. Today, Goldwater’s shadow looms over Donald Trump’s campaign for the Republican Party’s nomination.

“During my life, I have had a few nightmares which happened to me while I was wide awake,” Robinson wrote in 1967. “One of them was the National Republican Convention in San Francisco, which produced the greatest disaster the Republican Party has ever known—Nominee Barry Goldwater.” Robinson, a loyal Republican who campaigned for Richard Nixon in 1960, was shocked and saddened by the racism and lack of civility he witnessed at the 1964 convention. As the historian Leah Wright Rigueur describes in The Loneliness of the Black Republican, black delegates were verbally assaulted and threatened with violence by Goldwater supporters.
…..
[from the Chicago Defender] “The conviction is universal that Goldwater represents the most diabolical force that has ever captured the leadership of the Republican Party. After 108 years of exhortation to freedom, liberty, and justice, the GOP now becomes the label under which Fascism is oozed into the mainstream of American politics.”

…..
“A new breed of Republicans has taken over the GOP,” Robinson wrote just after Goldwater claimed his party’s nomination. “It is a new breed which is seeking to sell to Americans a doctrine which is as old as mankind—the doctrine of racial division, the doctrine of racial prejudice, the doctrine of white supremacy.” He continued, “If I could couch in one single sentence the way I felt, watching this controlled steam-roller operation roll into high gear, I would put it this way, I would say that I now believe I know how it felt to be a Jew in Hitler’s Germany.”

So it was not Gingrich or Nixon, it was the libertarian Goldwater at the heart of the metamorphosis of the GOP into the white supremacist fascist organization trying to bring down our democracy.

I’ve been coughing and had a runny nose for 2 days so I took one of those covid tests (Thanks, Joe!) and I guess is just allergies.

Unfortunately, even if you actually do have COVID, you may have to test yourself repeatedly before it registers on the home tests.

I had a concerning encounter yesterday. A friend had an unveiling of the headstone for her father who passed away last year. We all returned to her home for a meal. I sat at a table in her sun room, away from the rest of the crowd (at least 30 people?) There were only about 3 present who were truly cautious — wearing a mask the entire time and refraining from eating. Meanwhile, I chatted to a friend seated next to me who was only drinking ginger ale — she mentioned that she had an upset stomach for the past couple days; it suddenly dawned on me that maybe her problem was COVID and not indigestion. Sigh. Guess I will have to wait a few days to determine if I have been exposed.

if Emmett Till hadn’t been killed, if he were alive today, he’d be younger than Morgan Freeman.

Something to mention when wing nuts on your twitter or FB feed try to say “ancient history, why are you still making a thing of it…”

Yep. My dad was born in 1937 and he is still alive

“The Biden raid on Trump’s home is election interference.”

it’s a policy not a law. and only since about 2008

and it wasn’t a raid
‘home’ is also doing a lot of work here - a semi-public hotel/club

it’s true right now spy45 is a private citizen and not running for anything.
so watch them stretch it because the memos on which the policy is based state:

that Justice Department employees “may never select the timing of investigative steps or criminal charges for the purpose of affecting any election, or for the purpose of giving an advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or political party.”

so they’ll argue the search warrant affects those other races - senators, reps, etc.

though note the memos dont say what the exclusion period is - 60 days, 90?

and finally to end this absurdity, executing this warrant wasnt “for the purpose of giving an advantage”. it was to recover documents that over many months of negotiations spy45 was illegally holding and flatly refused to return. Oh, and also had his attorney lie about it.

When did the GOP become a party of jerks?

In 1960, a young model turned lawyer named Phyllis Schlafly came to national attention for leading a loud “revolt” against the GOP Platform’s civil rights plank, which she and other conservatives saw as no better (ie no more racist) than that of the Democrats. Schlafly had been very active but below the radar screen of the national media for a few years by then, though.

Phyllis Schlafly Was Alt-Right Before Alt-Right Was Uncool

Schlafly, a brilliant and tireless organizer, probably did more than any other one person to prepare the way for Goldwater’s 1964 candidacy, which completely blindsided the liberal (Rockefeller) wing of the GOP and eventually led to its complete extinction.

Schlafly was still at it 50 years later. She defended Joseph McCarthy as recently as 2011, and went on to provide Donald Trump with a crucial early endorsement, helping to legitimize his candidacy with the party leadership.

She finally died at age 92, a couple of months before her lifelong dream of racist and fascist ascendancy was realized with Trump’s election.

Trump Demands He Be Declared 2020 Election Winner or Hold a New Election ‘Immediately!’

So now it comes out, conclusively, that the FBI BURIED THE HUNTER BIDEN LAPTOP STORY BEFORE THE ELECTION knowing that, if they didn’t, “Trump would have easily won the 2020 Presidential Election”. This is massive FRAUD & ELECTION INTERFERENCE at a level never seen before in our Country. REMEDY: Declare the rightful winner or, and this would be the minimal solution, declare the 2020 Election irreparably compromised and have a new Election, immediately!

I mean, it’s not even a thing that CAN happen. There’s no law that says, “Oops, there was fraud/criming/the loser is very sore, you need to set up the election apparatus and do it all over again.” I can’t even begin to fathom the logistics that would be involved in that effort.
