Russia’s idea of defense was firing everything they had as fast as they could…and now they’ve gone and melted themselves into dysfunction.

re: #120 BeenHereAwhile

Woulda been better with Jesse “Lone Cat” Fuller.

When I started college in New Orleans in 1974, I found Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown early on. He was an early and quite powerful influence on my taste in music. He played with ‘Fess Longhair a LOT and I loved them. Moved to Austin in ‘89 and my next-door neighbor was Marcia Ball’s sax player (she was a heavily influenced by ‘Fess, too.). Gate regularly played in Austin, especially at Antone’s.

Another friend of mine referred to the new Supreme Court Justice as Clarence “Gatemouth” Thomas, and I always found that pretty damn funny, so I have kept paying that tradition forward.

I’ve mentioned before a street I have to travel nearly everyday has a couple of loons whose yards are filled with pro-Trump/anti-Dem stuff. One has a flagpole with the upside down blue and black flag, a Trump 2024 flag and a F Biden flag. Well, today I noticed a new flagpole on the opposite side of the yard. At the top is the US flag, then an “Arrest Trump” flag, then a “Trump Lost: you’re in a cult” flag. I wonder if they take their meals together.

Since I was born in the early ’80s, Gorbachev is the first Russian leader I vividly remember seeing on TV. I also remember asking my mom “why does that many have a funny head?” the first time I saw his birthmark.

He came to America in the 80’s and saw desktop computers even in in small businesses. He realized two things: without such computers the USSR could not keep up with the West but once they had them, the government could no longer keep a close lid on the spread of information.

Unfortunately, he overestimated the system’s ability to reform itself.

So did I when I went there in 1992.

totes delusional:

But despite the clear similarities to her own life, Rowling claimed to Graham Norton that it’s all just a big coincidence. “I should make it really clear after some of the things that have happened the last year that this is not depicting [that],” she said.

“I had written the book before certain things happened to me online,” she continued. “I said to my husband, ‘I think everyone is going to see this as a response to what happened to me,’ but it genuinely wasn’t. The first draft of the book was finished at the point certain things happened.”

So far, critics aren’t buying her explanation, with The Sunday Times and The Telegraph both pointing out the obvious connection and giving the novel bleak reviews.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said three people were in the plane, all of whom sustained minor injuries.

Troopers said the plane was involved in a training session where an engine stall was simulated.

During that exercise, the plane malfunctioned, and the engine powered off and would not restart. The trainer took over and attempted an emergency landing that resulted in a crash.

The cause of the malfunction is unknown at this time.

They just lie their asses off constantly, including lying to themselves about everything that might not be flattering to them. They’re a narcissism-driven political party that doesn’t care about facts.

so strange to realize just four years later he’d won. I can still remember like it was last week Jesse Jackson in the exultant crowd with tears in his eyes as Obama gave his victory speech.

More to the point, he wasn’t even a *Senator*, yet. He was still a candidate.

In July, 2004, the late Valerie Phillips, an old friend of ours, called She Who Must Be Obeyed, and said “Can you and austin_blue be sponsors for a fundraiser for a Senate candidate from Illinois? It’s going to be at Gary Mauro’s (Ex-Texas Land Commissioner) house in Terrytown (Old West Austin- rich), and we can’t get anyone to sign up and he’s got this ridiculous name —- Barack Obama.”

So we dropped $250 apiece to be sponsors, and two weeks later he gave a Keynote one night at the Convention, two weeks before the Fundraiser, which we watched with morbid curiosity. And we were both mumbling “Holy Shit” under our breaths and at the end of it I turned to to SWMBO and said, “That man is going to be President one day.” And she said, “We got in on the bottom floor. Pretty cool, and thank you Val!”

Two weeks later he arrives to give the Stump Speech at Mauro’s house. You actually stand on a stump, a big-ass 3’ diameter Live Oak stump. It was 106º with no shade. The yard was just fucking packed.

The entire East Austin “black people who white people listen to” community showed up, mostly women in full Sunday regalia, a bunch of curious progressive white people, excited young professionals and us, who got to meet The Candidate who thanked us for our supporting him before the Convention. After the blah blah blah and before the speech, I went out to grab a smoke and he asked if he could bum one. He told me he was going to pretty much revisit the Keynote because it was hardcore political junkies who actually watched it the night he gave it.

And he did, sweat streaming down his face, nailing every bit of nuance. He just killed it. I think people were kind of shocked at the charisma he projected, after four years of Shrub and his mangling of the English language. So, that was how my wife and I got to meet Barack Obama, and very year, for eight years, he sent us a family Christmas Card, so we watched the girls grow up.

couldn’t figure out where the stubborn cockroach clan was hanging out. I’d cleared everything. sprayed everything. it had helped, but still, if I came out at 3 in the morning for some reason, it was like some kind of block party on the kitchen counter. Today, I finally had the genius idea of pulling the cutlery drawers out from the ancient cupboards they in habit. I banged them on the front stoop. It was like nightmare fuel watching the little fuckers barrel out from all the hidden crevices in the drawers. they’re really cheap-assed ancient drawers with grooves where cheap ass pieces of pressed wood create the bottoms, which means that the little fuckers were just lined up in those grooves. Hit that whole section of cabinet with Bengal Gold. The boys are coming tomorrow to use their pump-can of death along the baseboards and hopefully we’ll get this shit under control. I am almost tempted to just call Orkin and pay for my own exterminator. I’m pretty sure that would violate the lease though, so I won’t go that far.

aren’t they great? My kitchen cabinets are like something out of Lovecraft. Rather than put new cabinets in over the years as they’ve done modest renovations, they’ve just cut the cabinets and reattached them in odd ways. When I was cleaning a few months ago under the sink, I finally got around to shining a light into a corner that I literally cannot physically get to. I had to use a broom to haul out the 2 quart jug that was back there. I know for a fact that the company that was making the root beer that was once in there went out of business no later than the mid 80’s. That fucker had literally been in the corner for 40 years, at the very least, because the two generations that have lived in the apartment since then have never been able to reach into that part of the cabinet and no one’s ever looked back there, or if they have they didn’t care enough to get the jug out with the broom handle, as I did. it’s fucking Rats in the Walls in here.

Folks may remember that about a week and half ago, the Government of Montenegro fell on a vote of no confidence.

While a significant part of the Montenegro population is ethnically Serbian, there is major support for Montenegro to maintain distance from Serbian (and Russian) influence. For example Montenegro is a member of NATO, Serbia is not.

Cockroaches are infamous for their tenacity, and are often cited as the most likely survivors of a nuclear war. Some even claim that they can live without their heads. It turns out that these armchair exterminators (and their professional brethren) are right. Headless roaches are capable of living for weeks.

Yes, we had four years of Deep Rot and there is still a fair-to-middlin’ chance that it will re-root itself.

One could say that the 2000 Bush v Gore decision showed evidence of serious rot. After Obama’s election, there was real hope for a couple years but when the GOP took the House in 2010, rot resurfaced - and accelerated when they took the Senate. The failure to even vote on Garland shows the poison permeating our nation before Trump.
