Trueno: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

I admit I wasn’t sure I’d dig this, but they had me with the first notes from that righteous tuba sousaphone. If you don’t speak Spanish you may want to turn on closed captions; it’s better than nothing. This whole band is super impressive and funky as hell.

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month with an “El Tiny” takeover, featuring Jessie Reyez, Susana Baca and more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.

Vita Dadoo | September 27, 2022

With his roots in La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires and arms outstretched to the rest of the world, Trueno is rewriting the playbook for Latin American hip-hop. Wearing a cap for the soccer team Boca Juniors and moving among the spaces of his childhood, the 20-year-old, premier Argentinian freestyler shows us exactly where he’s from in his Tiny Desk (home) concert, an intimate performance that plays like a meditation on the music and the Argentina that has shaped him.

Trueno’s almost autobiographical set begins with “DANCE CRIP,” the first single from his recent album, BIEN O MAL, and an ode to The Sugarhill Gang’s 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight.” Trueno’s affinity for old school hip-hop is something the rapper returns to throughout his set, while also invoking percussion-forward beats and tango motifs. Trueno follows up with the album’s title track, before launching into an improvised freestyle. Underneath a mural that reads “La Boca resiste y propone” (“La Boca resists and proposes”), Trueno demonstrates his lyrical dexterity and emotional range, “Esto no lo puede hacer cualquiera, el vocero del ghetto conquistando la esfera,” he raps, touting his neighborhood’s resilience and his own.

Argentina as a place of celebration and lament is the thematic center of Trueno’s performance. The show takes place at a conventillo, one of many Argentinian boarding houses and microcosms of multicultural communities. Trueno concludes his set with “TIERRA ZANTA,” perhaps the most politically charged song in his album, which on record features the famous folk artist Victor Heredia. Here, Trueno calls out all the Andean nations by name, hinting at a larger global movement behind the song’s boundaries.

I never did figure out how to get the “Roku optimised” television set at the last hotel to tune anything other than the Carol Burnett Channel (all Carol Burnett, all the time).

I’m afraid to turn on the television here.

The Waffle House Index is an informal metric named after the Waffle House restaurant chain to determine the effect of a storm and the likely scale of assistance required for disaster recovery.
It was coined by former administrator Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The metric is unofficially used by FEMA to inform disaster response.

If the Waffle House is closed it means local conditions ain’t good.

I went to Rosh Hashanah services yesterday and today, and as I took my seat I looked around for a likely place to run/hide in case of a shooting.

rear exit door
Kitchen (tiny space)
Storage pantry in the kitchen (tinier space)
Mechitzah (partition separating the men from the women) is sectional, heavy and on rollers.

What a world we live in.

The attitude of Trump supporters toward those who defended the Capitol on January 6 is so disgraceful; but then how can one expect anything better from those who ally themselves to a traitor such as Trump and who remain faithful to him.

The entire GoT franchise is full of violence. It’s what GRRM wanted, apparently. And HBO made its name on sex and violence and they love any show with lots of both.

Actually, two years is a bit short for a tentpole sized movie. Soooooo many things to set in motion, so much logistics to plan out.

And with the kind of budgets Disney brings to bear on these, they generally find ways to run over obstacles or bend them to their will.

The guys at Marvel haven’t exactly been coy about their intent on getting a new Deadpool made, they just hadn’t confirmed that a film was in production before today.

This Azzerad chud is especially digusting, and not just for his pompous fake revival preacher speaking style. HIs ignorance of George Carver’s achievements does not erase them. There is a great deal of folklore and mythology about Carver, which allows racists to focus on the falsehoods, that he invented peanut butter, for example, while ignoring his revolutionary work in soil conservation, nitrogen replenishment, and crop rotation. These, in fact, were the reason he was so interested in peanuts and sweet potatoes, and was a very effective advocate of their production. Of course, these things involve real science and are therefore beyond the grasp of most Repubicans.

This year is turning into the year of the Goathead. I’m picking up a goathead thorn in my tires every ride lately, even when I don’t go in the dirt. I’m beginning to think somebody is harvesting goatheads from Lime Ridge and spreading them all over the bike paths in town.

Bicycle tire sealant is amazing stuff. I have over 3 dozen punctures in my front tube and they have all sealed. If one of the thorn holes in the tire is at the to it will probably not seal and the tire will go flat. When I pump it up again it will bubble and I can put the leak at the bottom of the tire and it will seal up in in a couple minutes. Once the hole is sealed it seems to stay sealed.

I do that in case of any incident at theaters, concerts and sports stadiums.

It’s saying something that I’d rather have Haslam, Sundquist, or Alexander (even late-stage Lamar!) back as governor; Lee should have stuck to running Lee Company. That said, the long-running GOP supermajority on Capitol Hill downtown is just as culpable for the state of our state.

I’d wager it was Russia. To send a message to the EU, namely, that we can do this to your pipelines and another message to the Russian oligarchs that there’s no way back now.

Besides, if the Russians didn’t do it - they’d be screaming bloody murder by now.

It all depends on the amount of damage I guess.

Russia’s apparent aim has been to blackmail Europe with a “cold winter” to open up Nordstream 2, damaging it is prima facie counterproductive. Of course, there may be “wheels within wheels” at work here, a multilayered intrigue etc. So far the one actor prima facie benefiting from this seems to be Ukraine, since you can’t blackmail Europe to stop its support of Ukraine if the pipeline fundamentally doesn’t work. OTOH if the damage is superficial, this could be an op to set up and discredit Ukraine. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

A little background information on how the Nord Stream gas lines are built, plus, pictures!

The EU strongly believes the pipes were deliberately attacked and warned of a ‘robust and united response’ to whoever was responsible.

Russia has not ruled out sabotage while denying their involvement, and demanded answers from Joe Biden if the US were behind the strikes. Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Moscow has called on all its dual-national citizens in Russia to flee the country out of fears they will end up being conscripted to fight in Ukraine as part of Putin’s mobilisation, as tension between the Kremlin and the West continues to mount.

It was also revealed last night that the CIA warned weeks ago the pipes could be attacked after agents sent a ‘strategic warning’ to European allies including Germany, sources told Der Spiegel last night, though they refused to say whether Russia was identified as a culprit. The warning was not specific and did not pinpoint a time or location for an attack, the New York Times added.

“Then-President Donald Trump nearly fired his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner from the White House via tweet, according to new book from New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman,” CNN reports.

“Trump raised the prospect of firing Ivanka Trump and Kushner, who were both senior White House aides, during meetings with then-chief of staff John Kelly and then-White House counsel Don McGahn, Haberman writes. At one point, he was about to tweet that his daughter and son-in-law were leaving the White House - but he was stopped by Kelly, who told Trump he had to speak with them directly first.”

of course he never did and never could because coward.

Dangerman  Sep 28, 2022 • 6:14:26am

from the same cnn link

Trump tried to recreate the country to mimic New York’s five boroughs, Haberman writes, imagining a presidency that functioned like he was one of the city’s powerful Democratic Party bosses in control of everything.

The aides and advisers who spoke to Haberman for the book - she writes that she interviewed more than 250 people - offer a damning portrait of a commander in chief who was uninterested in learning the details of the job, who expected complete loyalty from those around him and who was most concerned with dominance, power and himself.

He did, however, invent the self-dialing telepeanut.

And the £ is in free fall again - it’s clear to the entire world this isn’t a move to help the government - it’s a move against the government to try to save the UK from its ridiculous and ill-conceived policies.

I would guess the Japanese government is continually intervening in the markets to keep the yen from falling past 145 yen to the dollar. I have a 500 yen piece (and some change). In 2019, it was worth $4.55. Today it’s worth $3.45. The reason the yen is falling against the dollar is because the Bank of Japan really doesn’t want to raise interest rates because that would cause other problems. I do have to wonder what kind of pressure future incoming tourists and their money will have on the Japanese economy.

Japan has strong deflationary pressure because its population is in decline. It’s the oldest country in the world and has very strict immigration laws.

He sent his wife out when he “feared for his safety.” This is blatant corruption.

Texas AG Ken Paxton ran away from being served a subpoena for an abortion access lawsuit.

On Tuesday, a judge ruled that Paxton did not have to show up for a hearing on that lawsuit, CNN reported.

In a motion, the judge said Paxton feared for his safety since the process server was “unidentifiable.”

this probably is not a good thing.

I am pretty sure that is fine. I live in Tampa and the concern would be the bay would push water into the city. The hurricane landing north of us would do that but when it lands south of us it is a better scenario for the bay area.

re: #172 Backwoods_Sleuth

This was a concern with Katrina. Greyhound stopped service well in advance of the storm’s arrival in New Orleans. A lot of disabled people were indeed stuck.

On moving, I’m distressed by some lizards here who talk about moving the coastal cities as if it’s easy, or that they’re just points and arrows on a map. New Orleans, which many people wanted to abandon, is only one such city.

There are many, many others.

In Massachusetts, the city of Revere, next door to Boston, is considered the most threatened by climate change and sea-level rise. There is a city that’s number 2 on the list.

My own town.

Salem, Massachusetts is under severe threat from sea-level rise. I’ve seen the maps; they are just loose estimates, but much of Bridge Street Neck, including the rail line to Beverly, would be underwater.

I am personally safe in downtown, but I know this will have an impact.

Repeat this for many towns around me.

Recall that Moscow, situated in the middle of nowhere in Russia, cannot support itself without bankrupting the vast countryside. But that’s what we’re asking when we tell New Orleans to “move”, like they’re dots on a map without agency. We’re implicitly telling Boston and NYC, and many, many other places, to move too.

And there’s not even an escape. The MAGAts love to crow, “HUR HUR COASTAL LIBRULS DROWN HUR HUR!” Inland flooding is a sure bitch. Good luck when your holler is under 30 feet of water and you’re in the attic hoping you can find your axe and smash through the roof before the water goes over your head.

We can’t escape. We deal with this standing right where we are.

Or don’t, if you’re a Republican.

You’re underestimating the passion with which neo-fascists support each other.

Nah. I know that is the most likely avenue of explanation, but it doesn’t entirely rule out Tucker did something that Uncle Vova holds against him…

Yet it’s a “conspiracy theory” to suggest that this clown is under Russian influence, even though, at the risk of belaboring the obvious, governments everywhere have, and do, conduct influence operations. Russia in particular has a long history, dating to the 19th century, of such operations (see Protocols of the Elders of Zion). Beyond that, there is the public proof of the existence of the troll farms and their pervasive presence on social media.
Of course, if you suggest that someone is under the control of the “Military Industrial Complex,” possibly with the use of mind altering energy waves, that allegation becomes credible and must be treated with respect.

How is it that the stooges don’t know how obvious they are? Or is it just that they don’t care and will continue with their lies and genocidal incitement until someone forces them to stop?

I’m still playing around with NightCafe’s free online AI Art Generator (creator.nightcafe.studio). Here’s what the output was using tool defaults and their stable diffusion text-to-image algorithm and the text prompts of “North Dakota sunflower field hyperdetailed matte painting, neon fantasy art, photorealistic, a masterpiece, trending on artstation HD, Darek Zabrocki Khalil Ibrahim Khalil Zuhdi Lawaurain John Rogers Cox”.

My takeaway is that the folks who supply hotel and lobby art won’t need to be paying artists much longer.

There were a couple of funny recent Geico ads where people can use the review flag to show someone what actually happened. One involves a dad who screams when he sees a spider but insists to his son he didn’t. Another involved a couple on a trip and he was supposed to bring something that he doesn’t remember being responsible for.

It’s true! It’s the devil’s work!

The devil wears Reebok?

A group of Jesus-worshipping conspiracy theorists is raising hell on social media after declaring that Reebok’s new shoes are “satanic” and inspired by the Devil. A Facebook post detailing their takedown of the supposedly satanic sneakers is currently blowing up with more than 15,000 reactions.

The allegedly possessed kicks, the Reebok Classic Leather Tabi Décortiqué Low, was designed in collaboration with the French luxury brand Maison Margiela. The freaky footwear, released in January, is perhaps most famous for sporting a bifurcation in the middle of the shoe’s toe, which was inspired by décortiqué, a deconstruction of shoe structure, Reebok described on Instagram in January.

“A revolution of artistic and evolutionary proportions, the Reebok Classic Leather Decortiqué Tabi Low is an ode to history and innovation,” they wrote.

This is also behind Boris Johnson’s asinine “herd immunity” plan: he also knew that the economy was dangling by a thread and Covid was poised to send it into a tailspin.

Yeah, well the Leavers sold the notion of an “independent” UK based in large part* on rosy predictions (i.e. fantasies) of all the “benefits” that would accrue from being decoupled from the “overregulated” EU; - seeming to think that once free of The Onerous Hand Of Brussels, they would be able to suddenly become a more “attractive” economy to the world and themselves. And viciously dismissed any criticisms or negative assessments as merely the sour-grapes bitching of the scorned “Remainers”. And, Conservatives being what they are: the fact that the negative predictions are now mostly coming true** is just cause for more fantasizing (i.e. blame-shifting).

*AFAICT, simple xenophobia was the main motivator of the Brexit campaign: the economic BS was just dressing….
