Hurricane Roslyn is making landfall now in west-central Mexico, in the State of Nayarit to the northwest of Guadalajara. The central windspeed was 105kt (Category 3).

The forecasting track has not changed: Hurricane Roslyn should move rapidly toward the NNE or NE and weaken to a tropical storm over the mountains of Mexico today. The storm should dissipate as a tropical system by tomorrow near the Texas border.

According to the Weather Prediction Center, tomorrow the areas of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas which are in extreme drought should get heavy rain with a potential for flash floods, while southeast Texas is predicted to have severe thunderstorms.

Day after tomorrow, the remnant low of Roslyn will have moved into Arkansas, with severe thunderstorms across Mississippi and rain stretching from northern Ontario to eastern Oklahoma, Georgia, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Looks like the sorryantivaxxer website may be winding down given the dramatic plunge in deaths after the first quarter of this year. Widespread publicity in the MSM still surrounds each case among the well-known vaccinated but so far none have experienced serious symptoms. It does appear that the newer variants, though possibly still twice or 3 x as lethal as a bad flu year, are no longer causing any concern among the public and are definitely much milder versions. We will have to see what the winter brings, but so far it does appear that there is nothing on the horizon that will pose a significant additional threat.

Todays Sunday fun has been exploring all the bells and whistles in our new Subaru. I can hook my Android phone to it to make calls and run any apps I have on my phone. So my maps and such can be controlled by the vehicle system and displayed on the console screen. Voice command works well using the mic button on the steering wheel. So far my wife’s favorite thing is the heated seats.

The problem with alternatives is that they are going to be ideological stove-pipes.

Twitter makes money off of companies using their info and website to promote things.

Any so-called alternative, if it targets too fractionated of the populace, will not be as attractive.

So even if Musk does end up buying Twitter, the corporations will still want to use it because of its size.

Money makes the world go ‘round, and a Trump-allowing, Musk-owning, Twitter will be high engagement, and companies will like that.

Just like media corporations such as Comcast, WBD, etc. love Trump. He makes them money.

— Bob Woodward, talking to CBS News about Donald Trump.

My personal opinion is that Trump is a lot less of a threat than one of the two major US political parties deciding to (a) Let Trump simply do all the stuff he did without a serious attempt to curb it. (b) Take a serious run at completely undermining all the checks and balances that a democracy needs to keep running without descending into an authoritarian hellhole. (c) Continue to, as a party, to reverse the legislation and judicial decisions made to advance and protect individual rights in the past couple centuries.

Without the GOP putting power (and gaining more) ahead of everything else Trump would have been a quick aberration. He would have been warned pretty quickly to back off. And if Trump hadn’t there was already a lot there a few months into his term that would have allowed Trump to be impeached and then they would have had Pence to work with.*

Now how the GOP would have weathered the following internal storm might be up for question. But, as many say, Trump is a symptom of the widespread rot in the party, not the cause of it.

* - At some point the rabid base needs to be challenged by the GOP if they plan to survive in a democracy. It looks like their choice to date has been to scuttle the democracy.

I just did my own research this morning. According to one article, the people who use it like it; but there are a large group who give it low ratings because the mechanism for registering their application for an account failed and they couldn’t sign up. It does appear that the site probably could not handle the volume of new users that may flock there when Twitter becomes even more of a cesspool than it currently is — Twitter will morph into the new Truth Social platform.

There is a big difference between not wanting your own children and not wanting to support children and their parents generally. As much as home-schooling is often a tool for religious cults, the reality remains that children who have parents who are highly involved in their child’s education do better.

This is how status, privilege, and education is propagated. The children in some significant sense reflect the parents.

And this is why public education is so important in having a populace who can function, to keep the society from being run by an elite minority.

We are falling back into that latter situation in this country, for a few reasons, but one of them is that public education is no longer politically viable for a frighteningly large section of voters.

re: #86 Backwoods_Sleuth

But a factor from that also is that while, maybe, the children might have handled Covid better the children would have been another vector getting the virus into homes and infecting adults and the elderly. I can’t imagine elementary schools handling the masking and cleaning requirements well at all.

Plus the number of teachers that would also have caught Covid and been out - putting even more pressure on the school’s infrastructure and organization.

A lot of universities tried to skimp on things, tried to isolate students, and start back to classes early. And a lot of them had outbreaks and a continual issue with students and faculty getting infected.

The guy running CounterSocial is well aware of the hiccups. If Elon Musk ends up owning Twitter, I’ll end up deleting the app and moving over to CS permanently. Here’s my hangup about social media sites, and indeed any site that engages users to add value:

The site creators are the owners, and they will profit from other’s work.

I’m ok with that if I think the person I am helping is someone who is a decent person. (Thus here I have no problem generating activity for Charles’ website.)

But all too often what happens is that top person is a vulture. See Trump and his grifting site.

I’m reminded of all the genealogy blogs and works, who added so much to Ancestry when it was founded. Then it was sold, resold, resold again, each time vulture capitalists taking more and more $$$ off of the volunteer work of generations of family genealogists.

Same with Twitter. Same with Facebook. Same with Youtube.

And thus my hesitation of helping yet more people start up an organization, for which the owner will benefit when they sell some or all of it.

I was 27 when my youngest half-sibling (dad and stepmom) was born. He is 10 months older than my older daughter.
A few years earlier, I was in college when the next youngest sibling was a toddler. I found that taking him to class with me (which was allowed in those long-ago days) was a great way to attract girls.
Iirc, a famous experiment documented this effect a few years later.
Around the same time a rather dorky acquaintance came into some money and used part of it to buy an expensive car (Alfa Romeo 2000) with the specific idea of using it to attract girls. He ended up ruefully admitting that it worked halfway, girls loved the car but had little interest in him.

Journal of Family and Marriage, July 30, 2022, abstract of a study showing single men’s desire to become fathers over the period 2000-2022.

The study claims that a sharp decline in interest in fathering children occurs over the period. This coincides with single men caring less about employment benefits such as maternity leave.

The study implies that this could have implication for women’s employment rights down the line in the workplace and politics.

Boris blinked.

theguardian.com

He clearly never had the support of the minimum 100 Conservative Party MPs in the Westminster House of Commons that he would need to stand for the leadership election. That was starting to become very obvious today as Rushi Sunak officially announced his entry into the leadership election.

Sunak already had more than the 100 MPs he needed to support him from Friday night, so it’s pretty obvious that the reason he held back in announcing his leadership bid until Sunday was that his team were confident that Boris Johnson did not have support amongst Westminster Conservative MPs to even make nomination status.

In the wild, many male mammals do not father offspring. Thus the battle over the “alpha male”.

Women do not need men/husbands to have children. There is enough sperm donations to take care of the need for gametes.

We can have almost all of those conveniences without generating half as much CO2. I agree that we cannot leave it all at the door of the rich, but there were people making decisions going back decades that could have reduced our output by several orders of magnitude

Still, we choose to express wealth and prosperity in terms of the amount of resources we consume, not in how well we use them.

Again thanks for taking care of that pic preview problem. I also have a problem with the 2 factor authentication security on my tablet and phone. I log in and it says it is sending me a text with the code, yet the text never comes through. Android phone, Motorola Edge. Galaxy Tab A8 tablet.

I guess on my laptop I am on it so often that I am pretty much always logged in, so haven’t noticed the problem on it.

Charles had to turn 2FA for me because of the same problem. And to be honest, I haven’t looked back.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — A California judge has ruled in favor of a bakery owner who refused to make wedding cakes for a same-sex couple because it violated her Christian beliefs.

The state Department of Fair Housing and Employment had sued Tastries Bakery in Bakersfield, arguing owner Cathy Miller intentionally discriminated against the couple in violation of California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act.

Miller’s attorneys argued her right to free speech and free expression of religion trumped the argument that she violated the anti-discrimination law. Kern County Superior Court Judge Eric Bradshaw ruled Friday that Miller acted lawfully while upholding her beliefs about what the Bible teaches regarding marriage.

The decision was welcomed as a First Amendment victory by Miller and her pro-bono attorneys with the conservative Thomas More Society.

it’s ok for the baker to push their fake christian agenda, though.

He’s temporary. Jodie’s real successor in the role is Ncuti Gatwa.

Like bringing back RTD to run the show, this stunt seems like a panic move by the BBC to get some buzz, stop the bleeding, and lure back nostalgic, reactionary (former) fans who want to permanently live in DOCTOR WHO’s post-resurrection 2005-2010 heyday of their childhood and adolescence.

Influence, but do not control.

The masses love their modern transportation, their modern food, their modern conveniences.

Scapegoating the rich for what is the responsibility of the many is not going to solve the problem.

Poor people are not the ones who run large companies and make decisions on what new technologies to pursue that could reduce our carbon footprint. It is the large corporations, both publicly and privately held, that lead to our continuing reliance on fossil fuels and other carbon-generating processes. It is also government failure to “encourage” these companies to explore other processes or to fund sufficiently research at academic and government research facilities.

It did a great deal of draining the sports psychosis that city had at time given their sports teams fairly long runs of not-successful-enough.

A Sunday Adventure

Tri Peaks in the Santa Monica Mountains is a fun hike on a nice trail - with the exception of the last 20 feet. I had hiked up several times in the past 60 days, looked at the boulder and nope’ed my way home. Was wondering if I am too old to do this stuff and it bugged me. Too many years into the COVID era and carrying a few extra pounds was “weighing” on me…. Today I walked up, looked at the crack and kept moving upward until I was on top of the boulder. No looking down! After looking around for a minute or so, I reversed course and began climbing down. Things went smooth - thinking about hand and foot holds replaced the crappy thoughts about being too old to do this. Not too bad for someone just at retirement age!

Huh — just looked at an interview. He may be the example of the extreme left and extreme right agreeing on FP. On domestic issues, he claims to be a Bernie Sanders Democrat. He’s a perennial candidate who believes in raising taxes on the wealthy.
