I can’t believe I missed this incredible video for a whole year. I love this band so much. And this one includes a fantastic unplugged version of “Will the Wolf Survive.” Simply the best.

This tribute to Mexican American band Los Lobos was released in November 2021 as part of “The Culture of America: A Cross-Country Visit with the National Endowment for the Arts 2021 National Heritage Fellows.”

I have a neighbor who’s really a nice older lady in person, generous and warm, but insists on voting Republican and she’ll never change. I’ve tried but I can’t reach her. Even though she’s going to be seriously hurt if the GOP gains power again.

It makes me sad.

John Cole at Balloon Juice:

I woke up this morning and Lily was asleep in her dog bed underneath my desk, so I went to take a shower after feeding Steve. After showering, I came into the office, and Lily had somehow gotten wedged underneath my office chair, with all four legs splayed out, lying in a puddle of urine. I said “oh Lily,” tried to pick her up so she could walk, and her legs just went out again. Tried again, same thing. And I knew.

Every dog owner knows when it is time, and I have known for a while the bill for 13 years of unconditional love was coming due. I cleaned her up the best I could, wrapped her in a towel, and headed to the clinic. My usual vet was not available, so I went to the Animal Urgent Care in Wheeling. I kept a hand on her the whole way to know I was there and because she was really out of it, and I tried to keep it together for her so she did not sense anything was wrong with me.

Got there, was taken to a back room, waited for what seemed forever, and they finally came back and gave her a shot to relax her. I was holding her when they gave it, and maybe 30 seconds after they gave her the pre-shot, she was for the most part gone. Her bladder evacuated on me, and she was in a deep, deep slumber, completely relaxed. I sat there holding her for the next fifteen minutes, just trying to somewhat keep my shit together, because my end of the bargain had not been held up, and I owed her still.

Another five years or so passed, and finally the vet came back, we found a vein, and administered the dose that would end Lily’s life. I held her in my arms, talking to her, felt her heart stop and her chest no longer rise and fall, had the vet confirm her heart was stopped, and just sat there for a while, just the two of us. I wanted to just run out of there before I completely broke down, but I had to wait for the post-mortem abdominal spasms to end. I was not going to leaver her there twitching on the table, I was going to hold her until I knew she was gone. The spasms finally stopped, and I had a very ugly, ugly cry for a while before pulling my shit together, paying the vet, and driving home. The Lily era has ended, and we are both better off.

The vaccine “controversy” has shown us people would rather die than change their views about what the government should tell them. It’s still weird that so many women would go along with policies that have a very good chance of killing them.

Crying now. I don’t read Balloon Juice as often as I used to but am gutted to hear that John has lost his beloved Lily. I remember well when he lost Tunch. Having pets is hard but worthwhile. They only last for a few years, but they give you so much love. Sorry for his loss.

D.H. Peligro, the longtime drummer for iconic punk band the Dead Kennedys, died after hitting his head during a fall at his Los Angeles home, the group announced on Instagram. He was 63.

“Arrangements are pending and will be announced in the coming days. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your thoughts and words of comfort,” the announcement said.

Peligro, whose real name was Darren Henley, joined the Dead Kennedys in 1981, then played briefly with the Red Hot Chili Peppers after the band broke up. When the DKs got back together in 2001, he rejoined them.

And stories like these will not stop people (including mostly White women) from voting for Republicans in Texas (or any other state). I am trying to be optimistic for election day but am bracing myself for the worst.

Just had a 19-year-old and his girlfriend (And a bag of glass bottles… Hmm…) try to check it. We have a 21 & up policy for renting, and I have a gut feeling that one could have been yet another reason why we don’t rent to those under the drinking age.

This is truly some amazing bullshittery on the man’s part. He has enjoyed success that few will ever have in their lifetimes, has people willing to pay three figures for godawful footwear or “designer” clothes, but he sees himself as the “victim” because the companies that were bankrolling his lifestyle now no longer want to be associated with an antisemite.

Kanye seems convinced that the way out of the mess he’s made for himself is to turn himself into a victim of “racism,” that he’s some sort of warrior against “racism,” and that anybody who criticizes him or chooses no longer to do business with him is “racist.”

Because really, what better way to convince your former business partners to stand by your side then to accuse them of “exploiting” you by paying you millions?

The battleship was already obsolete by the time of WWII. That war demonstrated conclusively that aircraft carriers were to be the thing in the 20th century.

Now one further step in sidelining naval forces are the UAVs and USVs. They are the new threat, changing naval warfare not unlike submarines did.

Surface fleets are always going to lose in a race of technology. They just can’t change fast enough.

Future navies will be centered around subs that can launch USVs and UAVs.

Our discussion with our brother today was relatively peaceful since most of it was not particularly political. But he repeated the Fox promoted nonsense that the attack on Paul Pelosi was not politically motivated but was the work of someone demented. Yes, the attacker may have been deranged but his particular action was motivated by the conspiracy theories he read online. Our brother said we need to stop listening to MSNBC and CNN; I responded he need to stop listening to the Nazi News Networks and Nazis like Tucker Carlson. Very infuriating.

Submarines are why the US Navy has antisubmarine aircraft and depth charges. And a very old naval technology still works against submarines: Once you force a sub to the surface, you can cut it in half with a destroyer.

I just got done watching a very disturbing video by YouTuber Paulogia. It is not one of his usual counter-apologetics videos (1:08:22).

It is an exposé of creationist Kent Hovind and some of his staffers over the last year. Most of the people he interviewed in the video are Christians, both inside and outside Hovind’s organisation, trying either to bring accountability to his ministry, or see it brought down.

Several atheists helped in locating a child who seemingly went missing at Dinosaur Adventure Land last year. They found the child, and are now helping his Christian mother bring charges against his organisation for child sexual abuse.

At the same time, a court date has been set in Alabama for his spousal abuse case against one of his previous wives (he’s up to number four now).

He also has a new person on his staff, a child molester who was convicted in California and is registered as a sex-offender. Dinosaur Adventure Land is geared to appeal to children.

Kent Hovind has always maintained teaching evolution by natural selection is child abuse. Most mainline church denominations take variants on the position that evolution is not incompatible with their beliefs, with some of them maintaining that evolution was a tool used by God for his creation.

Caution for descriptions of child sexual abuse, child physical abuse, spousal abuse, revenge porn against employees, calls for murdering LGBT people, calls for murdering atheists.

Yeah, no, the attack on Sevastopol has no more proven that modern navies are obsolete than tank losses to Javelins have proven that armoured warfare is obsolete. You’d be better off holding up this war as proof of just how clown shoes the modern Russian military is than arguing it proof that manned warfare is on its way out.

I imagine a US Navy CWIS would make short work of a drone surface vessel.

There were arguments in the past that Iran’s use of high-speed cheap rubber boats would render surface vessels obsolete as well (the idea you could load such things with high explosives).

Surface navies have been around for more than two thousand years, though the word “navy” only appears in the XIV Century. For two millennia surface navies have been adapting to new technology. I imagine they will continue to do so.

Huh. I just got a second advert aimed at Nebraska voters, this time from three Republican state senators. (I checked my IP, it’s still showing Jefferson City, Mo.)

They are in support of Amendment 1, which would amend the state constitution to allow counties and municipalities to expend funds to improve rural airports or attempt to attract commercial air travel to them. (I support this amendment.)

The way the state constitution is now, only the state can expend such funds. For example, after Great Lakes Airlines stopped flying to Scottsbluff Regional Airport, there was no commercial service at all. The state legislature had to weigh in on a proposal to attract a new airline to service our area. (That was successful: We now have a small airline which uses small aircraft to fly flights to Denver, Rapid City, and Chicago Midway.)

Managing local airport operations seems like a poor use of the Unicameral’s time, hence the proposed amendment. That amendment has broad support from both parties in the state legislature and local governments, so it should pass on Election Day.

Nobody won the Powerball Jackpot, so it rolls over to $1B for Monday. Real money.

Also, here in California two people one the 5-white ball prize. California lottery for draw games are parimutuel gaming so the winning amount is different for every draw.

This time two people won over $550k each so the pot for that prize was $1.1M, all from just the Saturday sales as two people won the 5-ball prize on Wednesday.

I’ve never seen such a large ticket purchase for a single draw before, except perhaps for that big billion dollar plus win for PB a couple of years ago.

MLS estimates there is a 36% chance someone wins the jackpot on Monday, which means they are expecting to sell a lot of tickets.

My wife and I have discussed what we would do with a Powerball win. We’ve pretty much settled on either

a) Put a whole bunch of electric car chargers along US-26
b) Give the majority of it to charitable organisations.

We could probably live off a million or two.

I figured this was gonna happen, what with Elon being a libertarian dudebro:

Hours after Elon Musk tweeted that he had “freed” the bird, a reference to Twitter’s logo, the European Commission’s Internal Markets Commissioner Thierry Breton warned that in Europe “the bird will fly by” the EU’s content moderation rules.

The EU’s Digital Services Act, which officially became law this month, gives the bloc’s executive arm, the European Commission, unprecedented powers to police tech platforms by requiring them to remove illegal content ranging from terrorist propaganda to ads for unsafe toys.

Breton already warned Musk in the spring that his free-speech approach would have to follow the DSA. “I don’t care what he’s doing outside of Europe,” Breton told Bloomberg Television in April. “You want to enter into Europe? These are our rules.”

The EU has never shied from policing Big Tech. Violating the union’s landmark data protection rules, the General Data Protection Regulation, already resulted in a €450,000 ($448,360) fine for Twitter back in 2020, while amazon.com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc.’s WhatsApp and Alphabet Inc.’s Google have been slapped with fines in the tens of millions of euros.

So Hallowe’en is an artificial holiday in Germany, it started with GI’s from Heidelberg Kaserne holding a Hallowe’en blowout at nearby Castle Frankenstein and sort of spread from there.

But in some villages in areas of ancient Celtic settlement like ours, they still celebrate Klumpennacht, which is identical, even featuring hollowed-out turnip lanterns (Klumpen) and dressing up to go about the village collecting sweets.

And added plus: November 1st is a holiday in the Rhineland-Palatinate so kiddies can party ‘til they’re purple.

There’s a little bus coming and going,
A little bus made by the company Kia.
And I’m about to get fucked up,
And my tongue won’t take me to Kiev.

It’s been a long time, but love stabs me with a needle,
Your window beckons me with a light.
I remember: you were in college then…
And I was still a fuck-up.

I dreamed that all the British subjects
Get a nuclear mushroom over London…

The sky is as blue as a globe,
The Indian or Atlantic Ocean…
And I’m about to get fucked up,
Not really, but metaphysically.

It’s been a long time, but my sadness is wandering in my heart.
My swamp beckons me with a flame.
So what if you’ve always loved Prodigy,
I was and am still a fuck-up.

My dream was for all the British subjects
To get a nuclear mushroom over London…

There’s a little bus coming and going,
Made by Kia, South Korea.
And I’m about to get fucked up.
I wish it would all happen sooner rather than later!

Dreams, dreams, I’m letting you go, go away!
Spread your wings, fly away!
I’m going under the water like Kitezh.
I was and still am a fuck-up…

But I hope that to all the British subjects
Somebody provides a mushroom over London.

The propaganda, is of course, aimed at the West to weaken support for Ukraine. I have also seen TV ads from a group called “Citizens for Sanity” broadcast during the World Series and College Football games this weekend trying to use fear of nuclear war in opposition to aid for Ukraine. It would be interesting to know who is funding “Citizens for Sanity”

If Elon fucks up Twitter then tries to unload it, he will get pennies on the dollar, at best. Most likely scenario is that he makes few actual changes in the end so that advertisers don’t flee. You don’t become the richest man in the world by lighting fire to $44 billion.

most racists don’t really think they’re racist, so if everyone they know is just as racist they wouldn’t recognize that as racism.

My wife and I have discussed what we would do with a Powerball win. We’ve pretty much settled on either

a) Put a whole bunch of electric car chargers along US-26
b) Give the majority of it to charitable organisations.

We could probably live off a million or two.

You could also answer the desperate pleas from Biden and Harris and Obama and…. to donate money to Democratic candidates. And as soon as you contribute the money, you will get 10 times as many pleas for even more money!

I would be really cautious drawing conclusions from this. 2018 was pre-Covid, so I am not surprised there are more early votes. And Republicans have decided that early voting is suspect, so more of them are voting election day which would skew the early vote to Democrats.

I have been getting *microtargeted* ads on various websites for the state representative seats. Kari Lake was prayed over a few days back by the usual Evangelical suspects, including a pastor whose church I regularly picketed until it became clear they were keeping long arms on the property. (Why no, Mark Driscoll is NOT worth protesting in body armor, TYVM.) The dude with the mike is Tommy Barnett, “bishop” of Dream City Church over in Phoenix, another church I protested when they rented space out to Turning Point USA to host Trump.

Hell is not hot enough for the people in this room. I am so disgusted.

For those who are interested…StuffCCLikes is Steph Drury, one of the first people to help married women attempting to leave Driscoll’s church in Seattle, and Prof. Jessica Johnson wrote “Biblical Porn”, which is a scholarly study about Mark Driscoll’s church in Seattle. Dunno who the third person is. I’ll probably listen in, because, unfortunately, I happen to be a semi-expert on this turd floating in a punchbowl.

Well, this is a misleading presentation, since losses include not only deaths, whereas the 70+k number is supposed to be only the number of deaths:

mil.gov.ua

особового складу ‒ близько 71200 (+950) осіб ліквідовано

personnel - about 71,200 (+950) persons were liquidated

That this results in 210-280k losses (with wounded and POWs), far above any Western estimates (by CIA or MI6) says enough about this number’s credibility (or lack thereof).
