I’m one degree of separation from that origin story. Check that, I’m probably part of the group that called out/was called spammer.

No one’s ballot is useless, or even mostly useless. I know, most races aren’t won or lost by a single solitary vote, but people thinking “my vote doesn’t count” are the single biggest reason this country is in the situation it’s in. We all need to vote, and talk about voting, like our vote IS the one single vote that wins our favored candidates the election - because if we don’t, pretty soon, it might just be.

I voted against the gambling amendments. Probably the only things on the ballot that are going to be competitive.

Concur. Simply the act of voting is one of the most important statements one can make in our society.

True, but mine only cancels out my elderly parent’s ballot. Antivax trumper who thinks that only republicans can lower her taxes and stop those caravans of criminal, diseased, and job-stealing foreigners.

I’ve seen that GOP-favored pollsters have been flooding the zone lately. I’m not optimistic, but I’m not fully pessimistic, either.

It would be very normal for the out party to win more seats in the midterms. But we have reasons for hope, such as the Kansas referendum and special elections in which Democrats over performed. All we can do is vote and hope that in these abnormal times the polls are missing unlikely voters.

There’s no useless vote. It helps guarantee that CA remains blue (and there are still millions of GOPers voting in CA - more GOPers live and vote in CA than live in a couple of states combined).

When I filled out my ballot with Mrs. Fish and we signed each other’s envelopes, I told my kids, “Voting is the single most important thing we do as adults.” I am not going to waste an opportunity to impress upon them the overwhelming need to participate in the political process. Absent running for office myself, there isn’t a lot I can do besides show up and vote, and I’ll be damned if I don’t try to ensure the same for the next generation.

California is so much bigger than any other state, that Trump got more votes in California, over 6 million, than he did in any other state, even Texas, and he still lost California by a landslide.

I sat down with my daughter the other day and made sure that she filled out her absentee ballot correctly so that it actually counted. There are two envelopes to put your ballot in, each one of which has to be signed, or your vote doesn’t count.

Oh, you have to double sign? We only have to sign one envelope, but it has to be signed by the voter and by a witness. The witness can be any registered Minnesota voter, so Mrs. Fish and I can sign for each other’s.

Yep. In Kentucky you only have to have witnesses sign if you “make your mark” in lieu of signing your name. On both envelopes.

Ah. In Minnesota, the secrecy envelope that you put your ballot into is a plain brown envelope that is not marked. Witnesses weren’t required on the signed envelope in 2020; I did it anyway, just to make doubly sure that the votes were counted. They are required again now, on the outer envelope, and then that whole shebang goes into the mailing envelope, which is pre-paid and addressed, so it can just go straight into the mailbox.

I mailed Mrs. Jay’s absentee ballot the other day: New York must trust its voters more than some other states: the ballot only required one signature (on the ballot envelope itself) no witnesses. And (the mark of a good progressive State), it was postpaid.

She is on the list for permanent mail-in voting (disability): I, of course, forgot to request one this year, so I will have to go vote in person. Fortunately, not too much of a trek.

Our town is extremely small, and the polling place is City Hall, which I could literally walk to on a lunch break or before work if I wanted to vote in person. I just find it easier not to have to deal with people.

More on the Russian attack Monday on the Ukrainian tugboats and barge.

From the article -

1. The tugboats were in a port.
2. The port was not part of the grain agreement.
3. That port had been getting shelled by the Russians for a long period.
4. It is uncertain whether the attack on the tugboats was part of the usual shelling or directed at them due to the grain deal.
5. Damn! Those crewmen are brave, risking their lives like that on a daily basis.

Russian Forces Strike Two Tugboats at Ochakiv, Leaving Two Dead

Two civilian tugboats were hit by Russian fire at the port of Ochakiv, Ukraine on Monday, according to Ukrainian Operational Command South. The Russian strikes are the first hits on civilian vessels reported since the signing of the Black Sea Grain Initiative in late July. Russia withdrew its security guarantees and participation in the initiative over the weekend, citing the drone boat attack on Sevastopol on Friday night.

“The Russian forces continue their attacks on the port infrastructure on the Ochakiv front,” said a spokesman for Operational Command South on Monday. “As a result of an attack on two port civilian tugboats that were involved in the transportation of grain barges, a fire broke out, [and] control over the vessels was lost. Two crew members were killed, one more was rescued with injuries, the fate of another is unknown.”

It was not immediately clear whether the strikes on the tugboats were intentional or merely the result of indiscriminate artillery fire. Ochakiv is not covered by the terms of the Grain Initiative, and it has been attacked repeatedly over the course of the invasion. Though Russia is in possession of limited numbers of guided missiles and attack drones, it relies on imprecise artillery bombardment for most strikes along the front line, including past attacks on Ochakiv’s grain elevator and port area.

You are right-on here!

I also see trolls as parasites that want to use the original post for their own personal benefit. They don’t contribute anything useful to the thread. They hide the useful content in their massive amounts of generated bs. And they drive off a lot of folks who would otherwise have read the thread.

Blocking them cleans up the original thread. Which allows readers to actually see and consider the contents, ideas, and work presented by the original poster and folks who provide useful commentary on it.

I really do not understand the original posters who allow their threads to get drowned in drek, who allow their original ideas to be hidden by the malicious, and allow their followers to get chased away.

None of the woke providers even open meetings with a prayer, and they’ll sell their service to anyone, even non-Christians and people who are not white. Can you believe it?

WashPost:

Candidate promises Republicans can take permanent control of Wisconsin

Hinting at his plans to overhaul how elections are run, the Republican running for governor of Wisconsin this week said his party would permanently control the state if he wins.

“Republicans will never lose another election in Wisconsin after I’m elected governor,” construction executive Tim Michels told supporters Monday at a campaign stop.

Michels is seeking to unseat Gov. Tony Evers (D), who over his four years vetoed a string of Republican-backed bills that would have changed voting rules in a battleground state that Donald Trump narrowly won in 2016 and narrowly lost in 2020.

Grave of the Fireflies is not “Ghibli adjacent”. It is a straight up Ghibli film. In fact, it was theatrically released as a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro. It wasn’t directed by Miyazaki, though.
