You know, if you really think about the Santa Claus mythology, and what it would mean if it really existed, it’s pretty fucking creepy. Not to harsh anybody’s mellow, but I just creeped myself out imagining it.

The grift must go on. On the one hand, the election-deniers are shameless. On the other hand, every dollar that goes to them is a dollar which can’t go to a Republican campaign or the Republican Party. I guess I’m fine with it.

re: #10 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

the issue is that Immigration IS a big deal, but with GOP intransigence and complicit fuckery from ICE and the Border Patrol, real solutions are hard to come by… Yeah, there are thousands of people from Mexico and Latin America looking for a new beginning, fleeing oppression and drug cartels (which is partially our fault since we appear to be their biggest customers) but bringing these people in, vetting them and then finding places for them to move to and try and start over takes work, it takes a social services infrastructure that has long been ignored by GOP politicians at every level as every attempt to strengthen it is cast either in a “crime” frame” or an Illegals” frame as opposed to people who just want to not live every day in fear.

In this day and age, when there is a labor shortage and it is across the spectrum in both skilled and unskilled positions alike, a decent solution would be a recognition that we need the extra hands, but that would also imply that they would need someplace to live and a place where their kids could go to school. The GOP is too busy using these people in the culture wars to actually examine why are they coming and since they are coming, how to integrate them and accept them versus a flat denial.

The GOP has no desire to admit that its a complicated problem that involves a comprehensive approach to solving, but if it doesn’t fit onto a bumper sticker they lose interest.

I have a distinct, solid memory of Santa Claus coming through the door at our house when I was 2 1/2 years old. My parents assured me that they did not have a guy playing Santa show up (as we did later for my younger siblings) and it must have been a dream. It seemed real at the time, and it still does, 71 years later.

Another Republican criminal down.

KS lawmaker behind ‘In God We Trust’ bill found guilty of COVID relief fraud (Hemant Mehta at Only Sky, December 23, 2022)

Michael Capps, a former Kansas lawmaker who once sponsored a bill to put the words “In God We Trust” in every federal building, has been found guilty of committing COVID relief fraud and money laundering.

His career wasn’t supposed to end this way. In 2018, the Republican was appointed to the Kansas State House and won his own election bid later that year. Like other members of his party, he used his time in office to push Christianity on everyone. That’s why, in addition to his anti-trans and anti-abortion bills, Capps sponsored a bill to put “In God We Trust” in public buildings, including public schools.

re: #8 Charles Johnson

He sneaks into every house in the whole world in one night, and leaves mysterious packages. It’s creepy is what I’m saying.

Let’s look at this analytically:

8 billion people on Earth. Let’s assume 75% do not follow Christianity. So down to…
2 billion people. Half are adults who shouldn’t believe in Santa anymore. So…
1 billion kids. Let’s assume an average of two kids per family. So…
500 million households with kids. Let’s assume 40% are on the naughty list. So…
300 million households need presents. Half get early delivery under the tree. So…
150 million households need Christmas eve delivery.

Most packages, boxes, and bags will have delivery addresses and/or name tags to control the frenzy on Christmas morning. Say 90% with some fall off losses.

Thus Santa will only be responsible for around fifteen million mysterious and possibly creepy packages arriving in households around the world. That is an acceptable amount of induced worry and fear to prepare these kids to live in today’s world, as each child should get at least one such ‘educational’ package between the ages of four to twelve.

As to how they are all delivered, watch ‘Arthur Christmas’

Rando:

Many people in both parties laughed when Biden said in January 2021 that he believed he could win the votes of some Republicans on important legislation. Two years later, in a very polarized country, amid FOX News, Biden has accomplished with GOP votes:

- A historic $1 trillion infrastructure bill that not only is creating thousands of jobs paving roads, building water systems, schools and airports, but also is the largest investment the US has ever made combatting climate change
- The CHIPS Act, which offers major incentives for computer chip manufacturers to build new plants in the US.
- $45 billion this week to help Ukraine defeat Russia
- The strengthening of the NATO alliance
- A critical reform of the electoral vote law, to block Trump or other Republicans, from stealing an election
- The first black female US Supreme Court justice
- The most significant gun-control legislation in 25 years
- Renewed the Violence Against Women Act
- Shored up the finances of the US Postal Service
- A ban on companies using forced arbitration to bury sexual-harassment claims.
- The creation of a national holiday to commemorate Juneteenth.
- The Emmett Till Act, which makes lynching a federal hate crime punishable by 30 years in prison.
- A pay increase for military service members
- The PACT Act, which widens veterans’ health benefits for those who experienced harmful environmental exposures during military service, including hazardous waste burn pits.

And unlike LBJ or FDR, who had massive Democratic majorities in Congress, Biden had a 50-50 Senate and 4-vote margin in the House

Wasilla lawmaker with Oath Keepers ties is eligible for office, judge rules

An Alaska lawmaker with ties to the far-right Oath Keepers group is eligible to hold office, a state judge ruled Friday.

Superior Court Judge Jack McKenna issued the ruling after overseeing a trial this month in the case against Republican state Rep. David Eastman. The decision can be appealed.

The ruling found that Eastman is a member of the Oath Keepers, but that he “does not and did not possess a specific intent to further the Oath Keeper’s words or actions aimed at overthrowing the United States government.”

Maybe you’re spending the day with a problematic relative, and will be spending the evening contemplating removing this person from your life.

I have no advice, only one anecdote:

I cut contact with my father for the nth time in 2014. I spent the next 7 years occasionally wondering if I’d regret that decision some day.

He died 17 months ago.

Any regrets, to the extent that I have them, involve wishing I’d done it sooner. But no one can do it until they’re ready.

I wish you peace.

OK, so my brother has been watching way too much Fox News (and worse, I’ve caught him watching Newsmax). He’s also been tuning in to a Calvary Chapel church’s meetings online, which concerns me. That said, he loves my cat.

Mom told my brother she wanted some fried chicken, so he’d gotten some at the grocery store on Friday and it turned out to be something of a grease bomb. On top of that, mom didn’t even touch the chicken. Instead, she ate a container of macaroni salad and four flan which he brought home from the store, and then she’d fallen into a food coma and didn’t wake up until I went over this afternoon. Then she asked me to pop her a bag of popcorn, which I did.

I saw the chicken in the fridge and thought about eating some of it, but he warned me off, “Too greasy.” I said, “well, you can give me some of that chicken and I’ll take it home to my cat.” He actually did me better than that. He took out the two breasts, stripped off the coating, deboned them and then diced the breasts into tiny pieces for Nicki. He’s fed her before, so he knows she’s missing a few teeth and that she will attempt to swallow too-large pieces of meat without really chewing them.

I took home that diced chicken and she just loves it. In fact, I just gave her some (a couple of heaping teaspoons, I mentioned they were diced, right?), went back upstairs and Nicki wandered up to let me know quite loudly that she’d eaten all that and could she have more? I parcel it out to her because if she eats too much, she’ll throw up.

Anyway, even if my brother is getting too conservative for my tastes, he still loves my cat and spoils her rotten. Gotta love him for that.

[Embedded content]

He goes into the intersection of the German version of sovereign citizens, neo-Nazis, monarchists, disaffected wingnuts, Qanon (as it turns out the second-most used language in Qanon chat rooms on Telegram is German) and tries to break it down for those who are not Germans.

In a nutshell, the Reichsbürger do not accept the sovereignty of the German Federal Republic, to them it was just formed as a sort of holding company to manage the assets of the Occupying Forces. They wish to see the (Second) Reich restored. Preferably with a Kaiser at its head.

And their leader, Prince Heinrich XIII of Reuss was drawn into it when the Federal Republic shot down all his appeals on getting his property reinstated. I guess the catch was that it had been confiscated by the USSR, not the East German authorities and was, at least according to some informal agreement between the Federal Republic and The USSR, not subject to restoration.

That is what led him, more out of desperation than out of fascist political conviction, to question the legitimacy of the German government.

An Academic Is Fired Over a Medieval Painting of the Prophet Muhammad (New Lines Magazine, December 22, 2022)

TL;DR, Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., a liberal arts college, has fired a professor for a classroom exercise deemed “undeniably inconsiderate, disrespectful and Islamophobic.”

The Islamophobic act? Including a famous mediæval piece of art depicting Mohammad.

Neither before nor after these declarations was the faculty member given a public platform or forum to explain the classroom lecture and activity. To fill in the gap, on Dec. 6, an essay written by a Hamline professor of religion who teaches Islam explaining the incident along with the historical context and aesthetic value of Islamic images of Muhammad was published on The Oracle’s [the student newspaper] website. The essay was taken down two days later. One day after that, Hamline’s president and AVPIE sent a message to all employees stating that “respect for the observant Muslim students in that classroom should have superseded academic freedom.” The essay’s censorship and the subsequent email by two top university administrators raise serious concerns about freedom of speech and academic freedom at the university.

Religion should never trump either education or academic freedom. No doubt Christian fundamentalists will take note of such incidents.

The instructor was released from their spring term teaching at Hamline, and its AVPIE went on the record as stating: “It was decided it was best that this faculty member was no longer part of the Hamline community.” In other words, an instructor who showed an Islamic painting during a visual analysis — a basic exercise for art history training — was publicly impugned for hate speech and dismissed thereafter, without access to due process.

I can understand (although I don’t agree with) the argument about it being disrespectful of religious sensibilities, but “hate speech”?

It is the a variant of the Horseshoe Theory. An extremely minority view of Islamic art (it can’t depict people) held by ultra-conservatives is adopted as “true” by liberals. In the interest of not offending the religious feelings of Muslims (where the overwhelming majority of Muslims don’t hold that position), the liberals in the college have imposed conservative censorship of education and educators.

The magazine above is an Islamic theologian magazine. The author of the piece after what I cited goes through a basic history of Muslim depictions of Mohammad through the present day, from biographies and history books to postcards (the latter treated in Iran as something like a Catholic scapular).

The whole article is an interesting read.

A change (dot) org petition was started by Muslims calling on the university to reinstate the professor, saying in effect the university is stifling academic and religious freedom to pander to the extreme Salafist position, and that religion should never trump academics.

This sort of “means well” liberalism is reflected in other areas, such at the introduction in 2004 on-line of the neologism “Latinx” to replace “Latino” or “Latina” as Spanish nouns are gendered speech.

Repeated polls overwhelmingly show that Latinas and Latinos do not wish to be referred to with a suffix -x. Some scholars call it an example of cultural erasure or cultural imperialism (English is superior to Spanish).

Yet Latinx persists (it’s even in my computer’s dictionary of acceptable words), despite the overwhelming number of people who would be defined by that term do not wish to be so identified. It is sort of the liberal equivalent of conservatives ignoring preferred pronouns, albeit as an attempt at equity.

from today’s electoral-vote.com re Santos

D.B. in New York City, NY, writes: Con-man/Rep.-elect George Santos’ opponent in NY-03, Robert Zimmerman, is a friend of mine, so I can offer some scoop and perspective.

Zimmerman’s campaign had the basic information regarding Santos’ irregular financial filings and biography and tried to get the local media interested. It was dismissed as “political,” reflecting a media bias towards ignoring damaging disclosures fed to them about a candidate by a political opponent during a campaign. His campaign was also told by Newsday (the only Long Island daily newspaper) that they no longer have the reporting staff to track down stuff like this. Even without the personal misrepresentations, Santos was an odd fit for a well educated, well-heeled Long Island district. He is against abortion and for the January 6 insurrection. In other districts, an extremist candidate like Santos would have received significant attention and lost. But the New York media market is too big and distracted to focus on a single Congressional candidate, so Santos was ignored and then swept in by voters who were fixated on crime and homelessness in New York City.

Zimmerman has taken the position that Santos should be seated and investigated for crimes. “I will not play any role in overturning the election results,” Zimmerman told Politico, adding that “these are all good questions that should be investigated by the House Ethics Committee, the FEC, and the U.S. Attorney’s office.”

once again, it’s clear there’s not an authoritative pre-screening system at any level of government. most anyone can run, get elected, and after you have fight to get them disqualified somehow

maybe it’s political ‘malpractice’ for the other side (dems in this case) to not be thorough enough (which can be fairly argued).

post hoc “House Ethics Committee, the FEC, and the U.S. Attorney’s office”, etc is about the only mechanism there is. what a sad state of affairs so easy to exploit

Fraud by deception, kidnapping, &c. People in DC should be pressuring the AG to bring charges and arrest the bus drivers for aiding and abetting felony kidnapping and fraud, and impound the busses.

This crap would end if you start seizing bus company property and jail the bus drivers (they are complicit).

Massachusetts should be doing the same with their AG. Unless and until the people actually give a shit more than complaining on-line and actually hold their politicians accountable to do their jobs, DeSantis and Abbot will keep doing this. They will not stop until they are stopped.

Additionally, this is the second time this stunt was pulled in DC.

re: #164 gwangung

I’ve said this before, but the term actually does come from one part of the community—the non-binary community. However, that the community as a whole does not wish to adopt it is something to consider.

There has been a real shitfest of poseudoconflict over the German language and its use of Genders in recent years.

Unlike English, where terms like “student”, “physician”, “manager”, “pilot”, “Captain” or “manager” are gender-neutral, the Germans insist on giving them a specific gender, Studentin, Ärztin, Managerin, Pilotin, Kapitänin, etc.

Now, it was common usage for the masculine form to be used for the plural, but some purists insist on using both, which is just ridiculously clumsy: “em>Student/Innen, Pilot/Innen”

Commander/Inin-in-Chief/Innen

As has been repeatedly said, the real question is whether he is actually a citizen. It’s not against the law to lie about your background when running for office. If he was indeed born here or he immigrated and became a citizen, then he may be completely unethical (a typical Republican), but these actions don’t make him a criminal here.

re: #128 Targetpractice

The thing about the George Santos business is how the media totally failed to do even basic journalism and so are now acting “shocked” at all the lies being “found,” yet name a Dem in the past 2 decades and odds are the media spent more time digging through their garbage than they did actually asking them about their campaign issues. If they’d spent even a fraction of the time they spent obsessing over “scandals” like Uranium One, they would have found out that George Santos was three racoons in a trench coat before the GQP primary season.

Just like the news media here never investigated Mark Fairchild and Janice Hart back in 1986 and failed to warn Illinois primary voters that they were Larouchies instead of standard Democrats. A majority of Illinois Democrats voted against the official party candidates because of other objections without realizing their votes went to fanatics hostile to everything they believed. I didn’t vote for anyone for those offices because of objections to the standard candidates but I refused to vote for candidates who I knew nothing about.

That Prager bit is something else.

I know of this firsthand. Parent after parent calls my radio show, often close to tears, sometimes actually sobbing, pouring their heart out to me about being alone on holidays despite having children and grandchildren.

In virtually every case, the parent is conservative, and the child is on the Left. I assume there are cases of grown conservative children who won’t allow a liberal/Left parent to see his or her grandchildren — but I have never heard of a single such case. It is almost impossible to imagine a conservative adult depriving his or her parents of access to their grandchildren because the parent(s) voted for President Joe Biden. Moreover, if there were such a person, every conservative I know would vociferously condemn this individual.

You duplicitous MFer. You’re a hate preacher the spits 3 hours of it a day for decades about how evil ‘the left’ is. Then you use this non-sequitur of a qualifier ‘liberals are misinformed, but the left is purely evil’ but rant about the left being implicitly evil. Not ‘political differences.’

Congradumalashuns! You’ve been here way longer than me. I feel inadequate. Do I have to sit at the kids’ table?

The chutney I made with the fresh local pineapple is the bomb. If I ever put pineapple on a pizza, a big if, I would use fresh pineapple and probably shred it or chop it to a dice. Not chunks.

When I lived in Chicago back in 78/79 I went to Jimmy Wong’s in the Loop and had Pineapple Chicken on Christmas.

They served diced chicken, stir-fried veggies and pineapple chunks in a hollowed out pineapple…and damn that was DEE-LISH-US!

So sad Jimmy Wong’s is long gone…

There’s a beachfront place here that makes decent food but they do a proper pineapple fried rice served in a hollowed-out pineapple shell.

It’s time for my annual Christmas music listening. Here is a wonderful and traditional song, sung by Ronald J. Dio.

I usually can’t find fresh, but Dole canned shredded works acceptably for that.
