I can’t escape this memory
It’s like a dream, it’s got me up all night again
And you’re all that I can see
But I been here before, I’ve crossed so many roads
Never needed more than I could hold

Running and returning
In a vision, you’re a ghost in black and white
A silhouette in blue and green
I lay awake at night and wait for you to come
Been hangin’ on so hard and now I can’t let go

I’m in a rollin’ wave
That moves across the line
Am I losin’ my faith?
We’re gonna lose it in time

Leaves are falling down like rain
In the mornin’, I just stand alone outside
And I watch ‘em blow away
It’s so hard to find a friеnd these days
Oh, babe, I’m sinkin’

Summеr comes and rain gets in
It’s like I’m lookin’ through the glass on the other side
I’m not tryna make you wait
But I don’t need it anymore, and I can’t turn back
And give it all away when it’s all I have

I’m in a rollin’ wave
That moves across the line
Am I losin’ my faith?
We’re gonna lose it in time
Sometimes forwards is the only way back
To reach the hill in time

I was lost in the light that can’t be seen
Don’t move around in front of me
I’m on a scene, I’m overdrive
You lay awake, you know the way
You know the path I’m walkin’ on
Are we the cast you’re leanin’ on?
You know the coast, you’re on your own

Well, I’m gone like a light that can’t be seen
Don’t look away, it’s just a dream
I’m out of touch, so out of reach
It’s comin’ back and I’m movin’ fast
Just one more day and I’m home at last
I need that love I’m dreamin’ on
I know the cost

You’re on your own
Oh-oh
You’re on your own
Oh-oh

These chuds think damaging their bodies is worth it.

I’ve never understood “lifting” culture. Yeah, make yourselves into a homonculous mongoloid, bulge out all of your muscles, take steroids to facilitate all of this (which reduces and sometimes eliminates their sex drive, which they are also obsessed about) and then, what? A chemically broken body and a complete asshole disposition. Just peep any of @NickAdamsinUSA’s pictures of himself, He’s swol, he’s also most likely impotent.

My daughter gave me a belt for Christmas. I told her 34”. I open the box and the belt is 48” long. Later I fished through the literature and found out it is a cut-to-fit belt. That’s pretty nifty.

and the VP and the local community just accept it, doing what needs to be done to help these people (and they ARE people, not props) find shelter and get them into the system.

I can understand if you’re making a point about immigration policy, but like most lssues that the GOP adopts as causes, they have no idea on how to fix it, they just want to use it as a cudgel to amplify fear and distrust.

Teleskiguy I have lost count of the disability cases I’ve handled involving bodybuilders who abuse steroids.

The end results of flooding a jock’s body with steroids and overloading protein/insulin/HGH on a body include:

Brain tumors especially tumors in the pituitary gland from HGH abuse
Liver Cancer/Cirrhosis/Liver failure
Diabetes
Osteoarthritis
Enlarged hearts
Pulmonary stenosis
Impotence
Breast cancer in men
Blindness
Kidney failure
Strokes
Ruptured tendons
Parkinsons
Psychotic disorders

And yet these narcissistic nincompoops still want to strut on stage in a thong for a check that won’t cover their medical expenses when the steroids present their IOU for payback.

But I also note that in the gyms I’ve gone to these hard core bodybuilders are full blown libertarians who are really into selfishness and oh man are they sociopathic.

Years ago, well before steroids became known in the gen pop, I had an office mate who had been a hard core body builder. He was on parole for stealing horse steroids from a vet. He claimed not to use them himself but to sell to his lifting buddies, as if that made any difference. Kind of shook me back then to think someone was so focused on getting bigger that they would inject something never approved for use on humans. Still kind of creeps me out.

The Washington Post has been doing an expose on steroid abuse by bodybuilders.

These three articles show just how dangerous it is and how so called “coaches” who have NO CENSORED MEDICAL TRAINING are forcing them on clients…who die.

That last article left me in tears.

Not only was I in tears. I was motherfathering ANGRY at that punk who got away with destroying that girl’s life.

The first link I posted is PERSONAL for me because it involves a good friend who died from steroid abuse—George Peterson. George and I became friends on Facebook. He knew I suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and sometimes I had bad RA attacks. He would keep in touch with me and if I didn’t post anything he’d get concerned. When I had bad attacks he kept my spirits up continually giving me positive motivation. And I just cheered him on as he was going to compete in the 212 Olympia.

and then right before the Olympia…George was found dead in his hotel room…and the autopsy showed steroids…lots of those god-damned compounds in his system…and his “trainer”…well don’t get me started about that fucking weasel…

Why the Best Gingerbread Takes Months to Make
German lebkuchen are a labor of love, with a 700-hundred-year history.
atlasobscura.com

In 1296, in the city of Ulm on the Danube River, Franconian monks invented a culinary wonder. Thanks to the Old Salt Road, a trading route through Germany out to the Far East, the monks had access to cinnamon, cloves, and anise. They didn’t have much in the way of butter, flour, or sugar, but they had nuts from the forest and honey from the monastery’s apiaries.

One day, a clever friar had the idea to knead the spoils of the spice trade into the kind of cakey, honey-enriched dough that locals had enjoyed since Roman times. According to legend, they improvised a rather ingenious way of keeping them from sticking in the oven: by baking them on leftover Communion wafers.

The result was a cookie that bordered on miraculous: rich and sweet, and capable of maintaining its soft texture for months. When snowfall cut off supplies from out of town, lebkuchen became a calorically dense form of sustenance and a rare bright spot after the dark descent of the Northern European winter solstice.

And, of course, it isn’t just body building. Its baseball, football, cycling. Pick a sport and someone will be abusing drugs to gain that 1/10 of a second or to lift a couple more pounds or jack another dinger. There has been progress made in some areas to try and stop it but it is still happening. What’s worse, is that it’s crept down to younger athletes where testing is lax to non-existent.

Memories of high school 50 years ago when doctors were giving “vitamin shots” to jocks on the football team…and those jocks got very aggressive endlessly bullying the outcasts in school.

Turns out the “vitamin shots” were testosterone. That came out in my junior year when one of the star jocks dropped dead during training camp. Turned out he had an enlarged heart…from the testosterone Dr Jockstrap was injecting in him every week…and di that stop the other jocks from getting those shots????

Nope…

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Dec 26, 2022 • 2:21:36am

I’ve not watched the TV show House Hunters in awhile - I think they took a break during the pandemic - but I checked it out and see that they’ve had some recent episodes featuring San Diego.

So I watched three of them, and was reminded of why I despise the real estate business.

First episode - single woman, professional (engineer plus side business in finance), wants to buy. But her budget is too small and she is a surfer and wants to be by the ocean. Her budget is under $700k and she learns that she can’t afford a house in San Diego city so she settles for an attached unit (at about that price.)

What was so obvious is that here was a young woman who had her heart fixed on something (surfing) that in the end likely hurt her financially. She could have bought a tiny house in a decent neighborhood (Normal Heights) that was very cute (a 1926 craftsman) and will always be in demand. But a 700sqft residence was too small for her so she bought a larger attached unit in a neighborhood that is not going to give the future potential she could have had.

So in that case it was the buyer who simply had to have her immediate needs met rather than buying for the future.

One of the other episodes featured a couple who only had $650k to spend. They wanted a detached house but at that price all the real estate salesperson could show was a fixer-upper overlooking the Tijuana river (near the border).

That couple settled for a townhome in a better neighborhood, but it too needed work (not as much as the house near the border.)

But the sales job - listening to the real estate hawker one can really understand how buyers can be snowed. The problem in this particular case is that the residence was in a bidding war so the buyers spent significantly more than they initially wanted, hence they aren’t going to make the changes they desired.

Now all of that is pretty typical for first time buyers. The sad thing is that flippers and the wealthy have made the housing prices rise so much around here the past few years that even a two income couple cannot afford to buy a house.

Unless one has a household income of $300k/yr, or inherits a bunch of money, the first time buyer is out of luck in this county now.

Every time a property changes hands the price is forced to move up. Of course there are exceptions to that but they really are exceptions.

So the more flippers, the faster the prices rise.

Part of me believes that there needs to be laws about property ownership that disallows non-occupying buyers, or somehow discourages flipping.

Other than that, all three episodes featured buyers who wanted walkability - but of course our society since WWII has been designed for the automobile, not for the human. So “walkable” neighborhoods have not really been built in 80 years. We’re now three generations into building suburbs. And they mean cars. Which means more expenditures for just living.

So “walkable” neighborhoods have not really been built in 80 years. We’re now three generations into building suburbs. And they mean cars. Which means more expenditures for just living.

My suburb - Ostrava-Výškovice - was designed for that “walkability” a lot of people desire. I have two supermarkets (maybe a third one by next fall), a bank, a Post Office, a medical clinic/pharmacy and a park all within a 15 minute walk from my apartment.

Expand that walking distance a bit, say, to 30 minutes, and that expands to include a forest, a waterpark, a cinema, two more banks, another supermarket, a church, an OB/GYN practice and another pharmacy.

Also a main public transportation trunk line that can take me anywhere within the city.

The one thing I’ll give the former Communist government credit for was urban planning. If they’d perhaps had better building materials and construction methods to work with, they would’ve come pretty close to creating an urban utopia (fortunately, there’s been considerable reconstruction on the commie-era stuff). Credit where credit is due.

Utah Supreme Court rules on religious rights in a custody case involving a polygamous church (Fox Salt Lake City)

SALT LAKE CITY — A divided Utah Supreme Court has issued a ruling on religious freedom in a divorce case involving members of a polygamous church.

In a ruling handed down this week, the justices voted 3-2 in favor of a father who challenged a lower court’s decision to limit what he could say about his faith to his four children. He is a member of the Kingston polygamous group, also known as “the Order.”

FOX 13 News is not naming the father or mother to avoid identifying their children.

The Court ruled the father can talk about his faith or any other faith with his children. But any major life decisions about whether they would be baptized into the faith? That remains with his ex-wife who has sole legal custody of the children.

Both the mother and father were members of the Kingston polygamous group until their divorce in 2019. The mother married her then-husband at age 16 and, court records show, he later became a polygamist. When they divorced, a lower-court judge had granted primary custody to the children’s mother, declaring that the Kingston group’s practices “jeopardize the health and safety of the children, and will cause harm to the children’s welfare.” Specifically, that judge expressed concern with the Order “promotes the grooming of young girls to be child brides and that… The Order’s teachings alienate the children from their mother” by urging ostracizing of those who leave the group.

Late to the party as usual.
Steroids are well known in the powerlifting and body building community. I follow powerlifters on insta and go to the gym 3x a week for powerlifting with a friend of mine. Even the main powerlifters admit to steroids and discuss the pros and cons. The dumb only see pros. But they wreck their bodies. An example of this is Ronnie Coleman. Was the dominant body builder and is now a shell.
A lot of the guys I follow discuss terrible coaching and how it is effecting their sports and competitions. There is a guy on insta who is a coach and calls out terrible coaches and coaches who prey on others via his account.

That being said. I love powerlifting. It helps with a lot of areas in my life due to outside stressors and personal issues.
If that guy is that sore, he did it wrong. He did it massively wrong.

This is what China did during the initial outbreak — concealing the number of cases and deaths. Of course, today, with the widespread use of home tests throughout the first world and lack of testing elsewhere, official number of cases is well below the actual case count worldwide. Death count may also be deliberately suppressed in GOP run American states; many deaths may be added to the flu mortality count instead, especially given the lack of official testing today.

I’m sure those states will also find a totally believable reason to blame increased flu mortality rates on the Biden Administration as well when they are eventually asked about it.

36 years ago today I moved from South Gate CA to Koreatown.

When I moved into this area older Sears Craftsman homes were selling in the $300K range. Couldn’t afford to buy because of child support and my Civil Service salary.

Now those same Craftsman homes are 36 years older and the price of them are now in the $1.5 million range. People are flipping houses right and left driving the prices even more out of reach.

Condos were built on the parking lot across the street and a one bedroom price for those—$750K…

Which means the only way I could afford to buy a house in Koreatown is by matching 6 numbers on Powerball or MegaMillions.

Ronnie Coleman—graduated summa cum laude with a degree in accounting and he couldn’t get a job in any accounting or financial firm. But a gym manager spots him, gives him a free membership and puts him on course to be 8 time Mr. Olympia and all of a sudden he’s the toast of the town and good buddies with Jay Leno.

The steroids take a toll, he loses the contest and steroids present their IOU demanding payback. He winds up with multiple spinal surgeries and now is unable to walk without using side canes or he’s in a wheelchair. When they ask him if he has any regrets he replies that he regrets not lifting more.

They exploited him and used him up. And when they finished with him he’s cast aside.

A little insight into my thought process, spoilers for people who haven’t done it yet:

My first two guesses placed the E (obviously) and eliminated A and O. The consonants I chose also eliminated every word I could think of that included an I, which left me with U and a potential duplicated E - which led me towards the word “queue”, but I opted not to guess that and search for another word instead. Several minutes later, I arrived at a word I wasn’t sure was a word… but that brought me to another word which I WAS sure was a word that was very close to it. And wouldn’t you know it, there we are.

I suspect that you are well aware that if that is a 240 outlet, there is a good possibility that plugging in a 120volt appliance into the outlet will fry the appliance. Which is one reason why the weird plug type was used.

It is so infuriating to hear all those RW Trumpsters crowing about the “Twitter files” and how they “verify” the truth about whatever conservatives have been saying for years.

Our brother tried to make these comments to us on Saturday but I just told him that it was all a lie.

Some comments on reddit:

Comment 1:

Musk: All ‘Conspiracy’ Theories About Twitter Turning ‘Out To Be True’

Comment 2:

They have been coming out true, and the reaction grow more entertaining. Now many on the left act as if it is a good thing there was one sided censorship. No one wishes to take accountability for anything and will act as if this was normal. For this reason, especially with the facts out there, I do look forward for the upcoming investigations, especially about Twitter and the Biden laptop.

Comment 3:

No now they’re claiming that Musk is only censoring liberals. They’re claiming he is doing the exact thing that he is currently undoing. They’re ridiculous. They can’t ever admit they’re wrong. Can’t someone out there just say “damn we were wrong and we own it”.

Happy Boxing Day to Kari Lake and her attorneys:

Katie Hobbs has decided there’s a price to be paid for wasting taxpayer money.

“There is no question that Plaintiff’s claims here were both ‘groundless’ and ‘not made in good faith,’” the motion said. “As noted above. Plaintiff had decided well before the election that if the results did not favor her, she would deny that they were legitimate.”

“Enough really is enough,” the document concluded. “It is past time to end unfounded attacks on elections and unwarranted accusations against elections officials. This matter was brought without any legitimate justification, let alone a substantial one. The Maricopa County Defendants therefore ask this Court to impose sanctions against Plaintiff Kari Lake and her attorneys, Brian Blehm and Kurt Olsen.”

Attorneys for Lake have until 5 p.m. on Monday to respond to the request for sanctions. The defendants have also asked Lake to pay attorney fees.

I understand that in “some circles”, the lowball is half “the offer he can’t refuse”. In this case, the ‘Or’ does not seem have to been spelled out.

Trump is a liar but is there actual evidence for this assertion? His earnings would show up on his tax returns; do we know, as yet, if there were offsetting donations for those earnings? The tax returns have not as yet been released to the public, have they?

That is exactly what I thought when I saw it as well. And like you, I laughed. So I decided not to add a clarifying note about it.

True for us in the Chicago area too. But it’s 20 now, so out of the deep freeze.

Legally and financially inclined lizards:

I received an unsolicited VISA debit card in the mail billed as my ‘California Middle Class Tax Refund Card’ along with a request to activate it. It was addressed from a PO Box in Omaha, Nebraska, and was issued by an entity called New York Community Bank. The customer service contact was somewhere in Georgia. WTF?

This really got my scam sense tingling as California stimulus and tax refund checks are sent directly to you in the mail. It looks and reads as legit at first glance, mentioned that it was authorized by the California Franchise Tax Board, and did have a nice California bear image on the card) Of course the fine print said they wanted a SS# and your account balances and payment history when you signed up.

I can easily see where others might fall for this. Tis the season to beware.

re: #170 HypnoToad

You might also want to check you credit history to see if there was a query associated with the card. Credit reports can be locked to prevent credit queries.

In many states, the State’s Attorney General office will handle citizen consumer queries on crap like this. In Virginia, it’s the “State Corporation Commission”, though.

There seem to be a lot of articles about these debit cards, including
cbs8.com

There was an LA Times article in October that said:

The debit cards will be sent by the California Franchise Tax Board in partnership with Money Network and once people receive those cards, they can activate them by calling [no phone numbers allowed] and use them anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, according to state officials.

I got one of them too. After a bit of checking whether it was legit, I activated it, took it to my bank and deposited it into my account ($1.25 service charge).

In other words, it’s real.

ETA: At least mine was. They wanted a (partial) SS number, but no account balances or payment history.

And that COVID tsunami in China is gonna have a global impact:

As the Chinese government reverses its zero-Covid policy, a longer-lasting risk now looms: the potential of worker shortages at component plants or assembly factories across the country.

“We should be seeing a lot of operations get impacted by absenteeism, not just at factories, but warehouse, distribution, logistic and transportation facilities as well,” said Bindiya Vakil, chief executive of Resilinc, a California-based group that tracks more than 3 million components to provide supply chain mapping services.

Apple warned on November 6 of “significant” disruption ahead of the holiday season. The rare statement came less than two weeks after executives forecast subdued sales growth in the crucial period around Christmas, of below 8 percent.

re: #175 TarHellion

I wonder about the policy behind these accidents.

*snip*
Russian siloviki may be setting information conditions to justify the nationalization of oligarchs’ resources to sponsor Russia’s war effort. Wagner financier Yeveniy Prigozhin attended the funeral of a deceased Wagner Group mercenary in St. Petersburg on December 24, where he stated that Russia needs to confiscate luxury possessions and accommodations from elites who ignore or do not support the war effort out of fear of losing their privileged lifestyles.[7] Prigozhin added that these affluent individuals support a vision where “Western curators” dominate Russia in return for the sponsorship of their lifestyles and compared today’s Russian oligarchy to Ukraine’s or to 1990s Russia. Prigozhin ignited a scandal regarding the burial of the Wagner serviceman in recent weeks to push his political objectives — such as the legalization of Wagner in Russia — and his statements advocating redistribution of wealth at the funeral gained significant traction on the Russian internet.[8] Wagner-affiliated milbloggers widely supported Prigozhin’s criticism of Russian officials and praised his support for the war effort.[9] Prigozhin may be using such populist proposals to elevate his authority in Russian society or influence a return of stricter nationalization measures.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also indirectly attacked Russian oligarchs on December 22, however, stating that Russians who drain Russia’s money from abroad and do not have a connection with the country “represent a danger” to Russia.[10] Putin claimed that while the vast majority of Russian businessmen are patriots, there are some who do not share the sentiment. Putin concluded that “everyone strives not only to stay, to live and work in Russia but to work for the benefit of our country.” Putin previously nationalized big businesses in the early 2000s to consolidate his authoritarian kleptocracy and may be attempting leverage nationalization to coerce elites to support his war in Ukraine or seize their property to fund military expenses.[11]

Thanks, I’ll still check it out some more. It seems that the state did a poor job of instilling confidence in the recipients. Looking more closely at their convoluted agreement, I see that they allow you to cancel the card and request a paper check.

One of my 3 covid stimulus payments arrived in the form of a debit card. The other 2 were regular checks. Might be legit; might be a scam.
